I'm...HUNGRY!

Seeing that the last fort had been captured, Harmon called his men back. Clark followed suit, walking out of the woods with the other mercenaries. Once they were free of the trees, Clark noticed that the most of the trainees had been healed already, and the ones who hadn't were being quickly addressed. Two healers walked over to Clark's group and started healing the few injuries that they had sustained. One of the healers frowned when he came to Clark. "Sir, you seem to be walking strangely. Are you alright?" Clark grunted that he was fine, but then the healer examined the portion of his collarbone exposed by his loose cloak. "Looks like an amateur has already tended to you. I can finish the job, if you'd like." Sighing, Clark gave his permission, and the healer finished mending his skin. It felt as good as new; no more soreness or tightness. Reaching behind him, Clark felt along his back...and realized that a large piece of his scar was gone. The very tip of it at his left shoulder was all that remained of the top, though most of the bottom that extended to his right hip was intact. He felt somewhat wistful about the results, but he couldn't complain about being in proper shape to fight once more. Harmon walked over to the mercenaries, his men following him. "A few of my men have informed me that you joined the others on the battlefield," he said reproachfully to Clark. Clark nodded. "What of it?" Harmon turned to face his men. "I hope you've all learned a few lessons from today. I have no doubt that you no longer think that you are invincible; maybe you will spend more time training hard and less time trying to impress women with your status." Many of the men looked crestfallen. "I would certainly hope you have learned not to underestimate your opponent, no matter what information you receive regarding them." Clark cracked a grin. The "just mercenaries" comment was to lower their guard, eh? "And lastly, men, if you take nothing else from this exercise..." Harmon gestured to Clark. "Learn that your enemy will not always play by the same rules that you do. Your enemy will employ every tactic at their disposal to make sure that they survive and you do not. Expect nothing less. That is all for today; dismissed." After the soldiers had left to return to the citadel, Harmon approached Clark. Checking to make sure none of the soldiers could see him, he smiled and shook Clark's hand. "Thank you, sir. Those cocky layabouts have let their heads swell up far too much over the past week or two. We needed someone to beat some sense into them, and figured that this was the safest way possible." With a wink, he began walking away, then turned and gestured for them to follow him. "Come, I'm sure Lady Gast has prepared a meal for you." And had she ever! When the mercenaries returned with Harmon, they found a table laden with food of all sorts awaiting them. There was a full roasted boar on the table surrounded by several other plates of meat, only about half of which Clark recognized; multiple trays of ripe fruits and vegetables, breads and cheeses, pastries and pies...it was enough that even Clark lost his composure for a moment upon entering. His stomach rumbled softly; he hadn't eaten much that day. "Welcome back!" said Lady Gast, greeting them from the opposite end of the table. "I trust you will appreciate a hot meal for your efforts? You will still receive pay, of course." Clark nodded, then sat down wordlessly with the other mercenaries and began helping himself to the food. Servants rushed back and forth pouring wine for the guests. "Once you are finished, feel free to roam the citadel," Gast continued, "but I must warn you that the gates are closed and locked at sundown." Glancing out one of the castle's windows, Clark noted that the sun had already sunk fairly low in the sky. They probably had another hour or two before it set. "When you have had your fill of the town, just return to the castle and the servants will show you to your rooms." "Mmph," Clark started to speak, but then remembered he was eating, and swallowed his food first. "Your generosity is greatly appreciated, Lady Gast." It was true; Clark had known that lodging would be provided when he took the job, but he was still quite pleased that he and the mercenaries wouldn't have to walk all the way back in the same night. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I don't see why not," replied Byron. "Revenge clouds the minds of most, but you have an admirable level of focus, Brannan. I'll contact a few of my colleagues right away." Byron returned to his room to begin going through the list of mercenary leaders who owed him a favor, leaving Brannan and Recens to discuss the details of their plan further. OOC: *events of Brannan/Recens C support happen* (For those who don't know, they put together a ballista.) Goatfish, I'll let you take it from here. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another pair of wyvern units were dispatched near Ostia to ensure that they did not overlook any place Vergant could be hiding. There had been rumors about a unit being sent south of Nabata to the coast of Missur, but Kajan knew that if the rogue duke were alive, he would have gone to Etruria; Missur was too far to reach without supplies. As they crossed the border into the country of magic, Kajan could feel his excitement growing. Soon, he thought, soon we'll have him. OOC: Tookie, if you want to have Van/Griez come in at this point, now's probably a good time to do so. Anyway, I may or may not be able to post until Sunday...hopefully that's not the case, but if it is, I hope I left this post open enough for you guys to RP for a bit without me. Anyway, go go go! The mock battle is over. The man with instructions from earlier comes over and speaks with Clark, then his army, then Clark again. Apparently the mercenaries were supposed to win. The man also mentions that enemies don't always play by the rules. XEQ knows that he is referring to Clark's participation. He does not yet know that XEQ used a few of its on arrows and that there is at least one man still lying out there in the forest, never to fight again. Next the band is led inside to a feast. There is a long table full of food and servants bringing wine. The earthen archer remains standing, up against the wall. Nothing here is meant for one like itself, largely because it should not exist. |

Streak Streak gaped at the spread of food. He'd managed to grab food from various places all the time, but he couldn't remember the last time he'd had a good, well-cooked meal. After taking a moment to take it all in with his eyes, he reached for a decently sized piece of well-cooked meat and helped himself. |

JARRO Jarro left the group immediately following the victory of the mercenaries. He'd seen all that he was going to get from the battle, so there was no point in lingering. Unfortunately, the combat situation was not adequate enough to gauge a good understanding of the group's strength and it would require more observation, perhaps needing to go so far as to actually join the group. Jarro was hoping it wouldn't come to the last part though, as he wasn't quite the type to associate himself with mercenary work. Unfortunately, what work he did wasn't for him to decide, so he would do the only thing that makes sense for the moment; make a report on what he'd seen and send it to his lord and await further instructions. He arrived at his room, which the Lady had prepared for him due to business. Thankfully, the business with the Lady herself has already been resolved so Jarro only had to make due with his other business, something which he told the Lady was a private matter between his Lord and himself, and managed to gain a stay for as long as was required. That business of course being the observation assignment he received, which was the real reason he was here in the first place. Of course, Jarro wasn't sure why his Lord was so interested in the mercenaries, other than the fact that they seemed to have made a name for themselves pretty quickly, and his Lord had been suspicious of Clark's past transactions. What exactly he was suspicious of was unknown to Jarro, which frustrated him because he was always left in the dark on matters that did not directly concern his assignment. Still, he quickly wrote his report and summoned a servant to deliver it to his Lord. He knew he would simply have to wait until morning to receive his next instructions, which left the rest of the night to himself to enjoy. He was aware that a feast had been prepared for the mercenary group and he himself was invited to it, but Jarro declined because he didn't wish to give himself away just yet. In fact, Jarro stressed that it was important that Clark was not made aware of his presense, citing that he was uncomfortable associating with mercenary groups. He didn't arouse much suspicion because Jarro didn't normally associate with anyone other than nobility, a fact that Lady herself was well aware of. He decided to go out to get something to eat, as strange as it seemed to him, but he often prefers common food over the fancier stuff, and afterwards immediately return to spend the rest of his time reading his story and then going to sleep. OOC: So yeah, don't expect another RP from me until next morning! |

OOC: Technically, Van and Griez are still in BBR (and will be until the 15th when Griez's month is up), but I'll RP them here anyway because I doubt much will happen with BBR until then, but I can do something to get them in now. --- Two men were wandering, looking for work after a promising stint with another group had gone up in flames before it had started. They didn't care what the job was, as long as it paid. "Say, Van," the taller of the two said, "where do you think we are at the moment?" At this, the one called Van pulled out a map. "We're on the Etrurian border, I believe, and I see- Wyverns in the sky? What's all this about then?" "Should we ask?" "... Griez, that's actually a good idea. Might be something in it for us." Scratching at what was growing of his beard, Van readied himself for some very heavy duty shouting. "OI! YOU UP THERE! WHAT BRINGS YOU TO THESE PARTS!?" "Simple enough, to be expected from you, Van," Griez remarked, ducking the inevitable blow. --- Vassarin woke with a start. Odd, because he didn't recall falling asleep. All he remembered was Alkaan leading him into that room, hearing a deep voice and looking up to see... oh God. That thing had taken hold of him and put some kind of spell on him. What it was, he didn't know. All he knew was that it was very powerful and very evil. He wasn't sure if he wanted to know more about it, but something told him that he wouldn't have much say in that particular matter. But... that, a benefactor? Just what did Alkaan have planned? Did he even have a plan? OOC: Surprise Vassarin. :O (Tookie post of possible "oh jesus real tookie lost it" coming when I sort that out.) |

It hadn't taken Brannan very long to learn of the location of Clark's building. As a fairly new mercenary band with a high success rate, Clark's group was much talked about, at least in the circles of those involved with that line of work. Brannan visited a few armories and blacksmith shops about town, deciding it was too early in the day to investigate the taverns. For the task at hand, Brannan had left all but one of his weapons behind, choosing to take only the strange, curved blade he'd defeated Vastian with. He'd sheathed the weapon in its similarly unusual scabbard, bright purple with black diamond patterns running vertically across the sheath, before wrapping it in cloth and tying it up with string. He'd presented himself as a delivery man, handling the weapon with an intentional clumsiness as he questioned the shop owners as to where he might find Clark, the man who had placed a special order for the weapon. Clark was a discerning buyer, apparently. Very few of the shops had ever done business with Clark, and fewer still considered him a regular. Brannan was able to coax the answers he sought, and thus located the Guild buidling. It was placed in a clearing, which made getting in for a closer look very difficult. However, Brannan, granted the opportunity to take his revenge, enjoyed a renewed source of patience. He waited as close to cover as he could for hours, watching the building from afar to watch for anyone entering or exiting, leaving whatever hiding place he could find to trace a large circle about the building to see it from all angles. He decided to approach as the sun began to set. He opened the heavy door to the building slowly, and peeked his head inside. He noticed a woman sitting at the front desk. He took a few cautious steps inside, looking about carefully for other mercenaries, an act that could easily be mistaken for the unease of a traveler who's new in town. "Er, excuse me, Miss," Brannan said as he drew closer to the desk while he raised the wrapped sword up in the air, "I've got an order for a 'Clark Kallen' here. Is he in right now?" |

Melanie glanced up from her paperwork to see a very tall unfamiliar man standing in the building with a sword in his hands. Apparently, he was looking for Clark so he could deliver the weapon to him. "Clark and his band are away on business, I'm afraid," she said, returning her focus to her work. "They should be back around midday tomorrow." Not particularly caring whether the man stayed or left, she decided to leave it at that. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From far below, shouting could be heard. Marakken glanced down to see two men who looked no bigger than ants from his height. "Kajan," he called out, "take your unit and see what those men want. After you are finished with them, move west for six miles. That will be the patrol area under your jurisdiction." Kajan saluted and pulled Arganek into a downward-winding dive; his men followed suit. A few minutes later, they were on the ground. Kajan dismounted and walked over to the two men who were shouting, who were much bigger than he had presumed they would be. "Good afternoon, gentlemen," he said. "Is something amiss?" |

"They're...out?" Brannan raised his eyebrows, feigning surprise. "But it says right here it was urgent business!" He made a show of rummaging around in his pockets before producing a crumpled note. " I came as fast as I could from Sacae to deliver this, for God's sake! Now I've got to wait to collect, is that right?!" Angrily, he strode to the desk and slammed the note down in front of the secretary. "Tell me what it says there! Clark's supposed to pay me today, and I'm not about to leave here empty handed you-" Brannan made his move when her eyes fell to the note. He tossed the sword to his left as he reached across the counter with his free hand and drove the secretary's head into the desk hard. He held it there for a moment as he lifted himself over the counter and brought himself behind her. Brannan then pulled her head back with his left hand as he clamped his right arm about her throat, the bicep and forearm pressing into her neck. His left hand moved in a flash to cover her mouth, though he didn't expect her to make much noise after the shock of the first jarring blow. She flailed against his grip for a moment, clawed at his constricting arms with her nails, then sagged. Brannan released her, then bent over to position her waist at his shoulder for easy carrying. He pocketed the note from the table, and considered leaving another one behind as he reached for his sword. A ransom note, blackmail, even a simple taunt would be satisfying, but there were still preparations to be made. Gloating would have to be postponed. He sighed, unwrapping the sword and placing it at his belt before taking off for the Barracks. |

The silent bowman looks out a window and sees something moving in the forest. It is almost certainly a small animal, but it is not picky. Especially when the alternative is watching humans eat and then being shown to a room. It leaves the party early, off to shoot at things. It will return by morning. XEQ marches out to the edge of the trees and finds a hole in the roots. Reaching behind its back, it takes an arrow. The projectile is one of those pointless false arrows donated by the man in charge of that one-sided battle. It removes the entire quiver and dumps it out on the ground, then begins collecting the real, sharp arrows and places them back inside, hearing the muffled jingle of the gold stored in the bottom pocket. Once this task is complete, it draws its bow and aims at the hole. A little over an hour later, a stocky badger emerges from the forest side of its sett. It saw a beehive around here before and intends to eat it tonight. Looking around, it sees only trees. One of them has an oddly-shaped branch or two, but it's a badger and the trees aren't important. It can't climb them, and would rather they all fall down, and bring the delicious squirrels and birds with them. Suddenly, that unusual tree moves and the badger feels a sharp pain shooting through its body. It is gravely wounded. That makes it angry. It charges at the not-tree, snarling and growling, then leaps upon it, slashing and biting. XEQ, unharmed by this wild assault, fires another arrow. The beast's last notion is that this hunter tastes a lot like dirt. |

"Welcome back! I trust you will appreciate a hot meal for your efforts? You will still receive pay, of course." 'Oh sweet mother of St. Elimine, that is the most beautiful sight I have ever seen in my life. It must be to be filthy stinking rich. If I had that much money, I'd go on a food-tasting world-spanning journey. It'll be beautiful...I can't wait!' Serena plopped herself in the seat next to Clark, her chocolate-brown eyes shining with unrestrained hunger. She nodded eagerly at Lady Gast, licking her lips. "Thanks a lot for the meal, Lady! This is quite a feast!" "My stomach's growling, my heart's a wreck, before the reaper that I will meet, I'll fill myself, it's time to eat!" Serena clapped her hands and immediately reached for a rib smothered in barbecue sauce, stacking several of them on her plate. She placed some salad next to the ribs and finished off her first plate with a slab of bread coated with butter. 'This is going to be such a treat. I haven't eaten this well in so long. Actually, now that I think about it, when have I ever eaten this well? Oh who cares, this is my time!' Her next hour was filled with joking, laughing, and stuffing her face and stomach with everything she could get her hands on. . She briefly wondered if she should go explore as well, but decided to put that off. She doubted there was anything extremely interesting in the city anyway and the feast was here. 'Mmmm...the after-eating warmth.' Serena yawned a bit, feeling a little tired. She closed her eyes and let herself rest for a while, waiting to see if there would be any more activities. OOC: >_> --- "Are you sure this is the place, Lucialde?" The enigmatic man only nodded as an answer. Lily muttered something very uncomplimentary under her breath. That man didn't know the meaning of the words "straight answer". He'd probably be better off as a "kind" old man with a huge beard that she remembered from her time on Earth. Regardless, it didn't look like the sort of place a mercenary group would hole up in, but who was she to judge? She just went along with what she was told. Motioning to waltz into the keep, Lucialde clasped her shoulder to advise her against gatecrashing. "But-" "He's coming." --- Having eaten his fill- which was a fair amount of food- Tookie got up to leave. "Tookie? Where are you going?" "Just going for a walk, Myke," Tookie responded, "I'll be back... whenever I find my way back." "But-" "Leave him be, Myke," Emysia warned. "He's probably got a lot to think about at the moment." Even if most of it is probably offensive. --- It didn't take long for Tookie to find his way outside, back into the fresh air. He had also, it seemed, almost walked straight into a spear. A spear held by a fairly attractive woman that didn't seem much older than him. "Umm... do I know you?" "No," the woman responded. "But I know you. You're definitely the one I'm looking for." "Looking for me? I'm flattered but-" at this, he was interrupted by the woman swinging her lance at him out of frustration. "No, really," he continued, "what did I-". Another assault, another lucky escape. "What did I ever do to you?" "You have sided with the Graael Order's enemies," the woman responded. "My enemies!" "Oh, really," Tookie drawled, unhooking his axe, "what a shame that is. And here I thought we could be such-" he'd seen the swing coming and parried "- good friends. I've just eaten, but I suppose the exercise would be good for me..." --- Exercise? EXERCISE? He can't seriously be the one Alkaan is worried about! Furious at the boy's attitude, Lily forgot nearly all that she'd been taught, prefering to swing wildly at him instead. He seemed comfortable playing a defensive game with her, which only frustrated her more. Yet why, why did he not attack? --- Oh dear, she's pissed. I just need to hold her off until she's worn out, then she'll have to leave... It wasn't that he didn't want to attack, it was more that he wasn't really in any shape to be dealing with frenzied she-demons at the moment, and he didn't want to get other people involved if he could avoid it. --- As rude as listening in to peoples thoughts was, it had advantages. Like knowing when something had gone wrong and people were in trouble. Having heard that single thought of Tookie's, and something unknown just before it, Emysia realised that this was one of those times where it was very useful. "And where are you going?" This was Myke. "I... need to go for a walk." Realising there was probably more to it than that, Myke let her leave without further protest. It was tempting to follow her, just to see if he was right, but one of them had to respect people's privacy. "Myke?" Lilane asked. "What's she-" "... I don't know. It's probably something to do with Tookie, though." --- Dammit... I can't wear her down like this... I'll just have to... Tookie's thought process was interrupted by an orb of dark energy narrowly missing his head and hitting the woman who'd been trying so hard to kill him. Taking advantage of the moment he'd been given while she recovered and looked for the source of the magical attack, Tookie drove the shaft of his axe into the woman's stomach, winding her. She looked up at him, seething, and clicked her fingers. Confused, Tookie could only scramble out of the way as he heard a neigh from above, looking up to see some sort of winged horse descending. The woman picked herself up and simply glared at him as she clambered onto the horse that would fly her to safety. "Impressive." It was then that he noticed the strange man who seemed to have been watching the fight... if you could call it a fight. Probably looked more like an example of how not to defend yourself. "What do you want?" Tookie asked, almost spitting the words. "I wish to apologise for my rather rude charge's behavior," the man answered. Words cannot describe how much I doubt this. "As such," he continued, "I wish to make a gift of this emblem to you." ... A gift. Yeah, right. And I'm God. "Now, if you'll excuse me a moment," the man said, now moving towards Tookie, "I need to put this on you. About... here, I think." He held it in place with one hand and waved the other, muttering some sort of spell. "Um, is this really necessary?" Tookie asked, "I'm capable of putting my own jewelry on." "Not this piece, you aren't," the man said, almost smirking. "And now, sadly, I must leave you. I will need to make this event look slightly more favorable to my superiors, if only for my charge's sake." With this closing note, the man glowed a bright white for a second before vanishing. Tookie immediatly set about trying to remove the little emblem he had been given, but it didn't want to budge. ... You bastard. I am going to kill you. Deciding it was time to bring his walkies to a close, lest he be attacked by someone else, Tookie walked back the way he came. He wasn't surprised to see Emysia looking out of one of the windows overlooking the entrance to the keep, nor was he surprised when she dragged him back to the mercenaries. "How was the walk?" Myke remarked when the two returned. "... Painful." (OOC: Yeah, I probably shouldn't get too many events fixed in my mind until I'm actually sat RPing. >_>) |

Weyler, lacking an appetite, looked around the table rather than help himself to the genorous feast spread out before the mercenaries. There wasn't much discussion going on. Everyone else was hungry, and seemed to busy eating to make conversation. Bored, he stared at the back wall of the room, sipping idly from a water glass. He'd look around everyone now and then, noticing some activity among Myke and his friends. Tookie and Emysia had left for some reason, which left Weyler feeling a bit concerned, but his worries were laid to rest when the two returned a short time later. The return wasn't brought to the attention of the rest of the group, so Weyler turned his attention elsewhere. None of his business, really, he thought to himself, reaching for a roll of bread to munch on. |

OOC: Feel free to retroactively interact with Clark, but since I've gotta leave for a while, I'm gonna move things along a bit. Once Clark had eaten his fill, he sat back and sipped his wine while observing the others. Tookie left the table, soon followed by Emysia, and then the pair returned looking a bit disheveled. Clark doubted it was sex; Emysia seemed too high-strung to just pull Tookie off to the side and have a go, and besides that, Tookie's hair wasn't nearly messy enough...if it was possible to be messier. No big clumps pointing in odd directions, anyway. No, something had happened outside, but at the moment Clark didn't particularly care what. He'd have all the time in the world to discuss it with the two of them the next day. After draining his glass and a few refills, Clark stood up and thanked Lady Gast once more for her generosity, then addressed the mercenaries. "Excellent work today, everyone," he began, the wine lightening his mood. "Get some sleep and we'll head back when you're all ready tomorrow. If anyone needs me, I'm sure at least one of these servants will be able to take you to my room. "Speaking of which," Clark turned to the one nearest the door, "would you be so kind?" With that, Clark left the dining hall and retired to his room, where he lay on his bed staring at the ceiling. He decided to wait for a little while to see if anyone else was coming rather than going to sleep straight away. |

OOC: I am bored, so I will take you up on that! *writes on mission which may or may not be intentionally suspicious* Weyler excused himself from the table once Clark was out of sight, and motioned for a servant to assist him. After asking for directions to the room where Clark was staying, the wizard mumbled a "thank you" before setting off to see his commander. He knocked thrice at the door upon reaching the room, and let himself in after a brief pause. He found Clark lying back on his bed, looking quite relaxed. "Something just occured to me, Clark. We're being treated rather well for mercenaries, aren't we? This noble's a far cry from that Earl who shorted us. Really, a feast and nice bedrooms for the night after a day's work of humiliating a private army? And how much is she paying in gold on top of that? And before you ask, no, I haven't been drinking." Weyler was slowly pacing the room now, feeling a growing irritation. It wasn't like him to be so suspicious. He was cautious, yes, but not paranoid. Then again, he'd never been very comfortable in the houses of nobles. Being around such wealth reminded him of his youth, and that upset him. "We really got lucky with this one, eh? I mean, really, I'm sure there's lots of professional soldiers out there who could get close enough results for a lot less money. And if you had the reputation to pick up this kind of work that made all that money worth it, I'm sure we'd all be a bit more accustomed to the high life. How'd you do it, Clark? How'd you net us a job like this?" |

Clark glanced over at Weyler, then returned his gazed to the stone ceiling. "I've been wondering that myself, Weyler," he replied. "If the soldiers just needed a good ass-kicking, she could have commanded the more seasoned veterans to do it free of charge, and while Auncet was definitely a penny-pinching bastard, this level of generosity is uncharacteristic of even the kindest nobles in Etruria." The wine was starting to wear off. "While I'd like to think that our band has the kind of reputation that precedes us, we haven't been in action long enough to have that kind of clout when taking jobs. To be quite honest, this job was an open invitation, and Melanie jumped on it first." Pausing for a moment, Clark ruffled his hair, which had grown much longer than he liked. "This whole affair doesn't sit well with me, but I've yet to see any sign of betrayal or ill intent from anyone in this entire city. For now, I think the most prudent course of action would be to avoid arousing suspicion until Lady Gast tips her hand." OOC: I've got a reason for all of this, and I kinda wanted to have Clark expose it, but I think it would make more sense to have them figure it out tomorrow. |

"Well...I suppose that's true. While things definitely seem off, there's not a whole lot we could do without making things worse." Weyler gave a tired smile. "Glad to see I'm not the only one on my toes, though." He turned and made his exit, then returned and waited in the doorway. "Careful, they might try to get us in our sleep." He said it in a tone that suggested he was only half-serious, but he planned on taking all sorts of precautions before he shut his eyes for the night. He waited out in the hallway, called for a servant, and was taken to his own room for the evening. |

(OOC: THIS ISNT LATE AND RETRO NO ABSOLUTELY NOT) Van was taken aback. He hadn't expected them to actually hear him, much less pay attention. But oh well, one of them did and it was worth asking just what the frack was going on. "Nothing really," Van said, answering his question, "we were just wondering what was going on for so many wyvern knights such as yourself to be this far west." (OOC: Yes, the term "Wyvern Rider" always bugged me. I'll get something done for Tookie and the explanation of his new jewellery realitevly soon. Just need to iron out my next RP Only) |

OOC: I prefer the term wyvern knight anyway, really. "We are in search of a refugee from Bern," stated Kajan plainly. Before he continued, Jason DuGrine piped up from the back of the unit. "Oi! This guy's got a look about him like Vergant!" There was excitement creeping into his voice. "Same height, same build, same hair...this bloke's even carryin' the same weapons Isaac left with! Let's nab 'im!" "Quiet, DuGrine," Kajan barked back. "Get a good look at his face. Not even a disguise could be that different, you idiot." Kajan resumed addressing the mercenaries. "Forgive my companion's rudeness. The man we are after is in possession of multiple weapons, a wyvern, and possibly deadly poison. He is believed to be somewhere in Etruria, possibly working as a mercenary or a merchant. As you've been told, he resembles your size and shape--" Kajan nodded at Van, "--but with a different face. I don't know how to describe it, really. Any of you know how?" The men in his unit shook their heads when called upon, though one offered up, "He's got weird eyes. You know he's alive, but they seem...dead." Kajan sighed. "I know that's not much help, but if either of you two know of anyone that fits this description, please do not hesitate to notify me. You will be rewarded handsomely." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OOC: I've decided the town will be named Karaisali, since Lewa was the only one to post a serious name. Also, Goatfish, has Gaddiel rejoined the army or is he still retired? |

(OOC: VAN URURSTWHIL AND HIS MERRY BAND. EVIDENTLY NO-ONE WOULD KNOW THE DIFFERENCE) Van nodded. It didn't seem like a bad way to earn some money, passing on information. Griez, however, saw two rather glaring problems in this. Stepping forward to address the assembled men, Van looked at him wondering what he was planning. "Well, we don't know anyone by that description at the moment- unless some of you would count my friend Van here- which leaves us at a slight loss; where would we find you if we did meet someone fitting this "Vergant"'s description?" Van murmured some sort of praise to Griez for thinking logically; these wyvern knights would be able to move a lot faster than them and there would be no real way of tracking them down besides aimlessly wandering around looking up. "There's another thing," Griez continued, "that strikes me as a possibilty. See, if this man's hiding from you, and he had a wyvern when he left Bern, wouldn't it make sense for him to at some point find a way of making sure he no longer possessed a wyvern? I don't know how much he would depend on his wyvern, but it seems like the sort of precaution I'd take if I were him." Van muttered something under his breath; only Griez could be this difficult without being a total idiot. OOC: Griez; thinking way too much since whenever he was born. |

"If you wish to find us, we will be stationed in the nearby town of Karaisali, though I doubt you will have much trouble locating a unit if you search elsewhere," Kajan replied. "As for your concerns...yes, it is fair to say that he will likely have abandoned his wyvern to attract less attention. I tell you this as a warning, so you do not go looking for trouble you are not prepared to face." ------------------------------------------------------------------ Clark let a small grin slip through his tough facade. Weyler was normally so serious; to hear him make a joke had caught him off guard slightly, even if there was a more direct tone to it. Slipping his knife underneath his pillow, Clark drifted off to sleep. OOC: I plan on editing this post later with more flashbackery, but for now I have to go. |

"Oh, come on, Kajan. You've been courteous enough and you've damn well made your point. He's dangerous, there's money in finding him, blah blah blah - you had them at 'rewarded handsomely'. Let's get out of here and head to the patrol area." Gaddiel was annoyed by the exchange between Kajan and the two strangers. Getting outsiders involved would just make the job more difficult. If Marakken was going to be so blunt as to have the wyvern units travel in groups large enough to draw this kind of attention from everyone, they could at least go around keeping their intentions quiet. If they were answering to an Etrurian military authority, then yes, it would be necessary to answer their questions. It wouldn't be difficult for a war to start over a large group of Bern soldiers scouting out Etrurian soil. But in all other cases, they shouldn't answer to anyone. Of course, this was Gaddiel's opinion, and he didn't carry as much sway among the Bern army since his return four months ago. |

"You'd best be watching your mouth, Gaddiel!" said Jason contemptuously. "A commoner like you hasn't got any room to be backtalkin' his superiors!" "Jason, close your mouth," said Kajan in a low but harsh tone. "Or have you forgotten who you are serving?" It was true; Kajan came from a similar background as Gaddiel, though he hadn't gone to prison. Kajan's enrollment in the military was voluntary and upon an officer's suggestion, so he knew exactly what to expect when it came to the attitudes of most of the other soldiers towards Gaddiel. Many of them had obtained their positions through social rank rather than skill, and while some were genuinely good people, most still held prejudice against those of common birth. "Besides," he continued, "Gaddiel's right. We need to get to our posts." Kajan gave a curt nod to Van and Griez, and then he and his men took flight once more. We're in a high-priority area, since it's the closest region to where we lost track of Isaac...but I doubt he would stay so close to the area. What's Marakken thinking? |

OOC: I decided to just make a new post. :P Months of research had finally paid off; Isaac had found the tool by which he would exact his revenge. Maerofolium, a cheap and easily obtained plant that was commonly used to treat muscle pain, could be mixed with a handful of everyday herbs found in any marketplace to create a low-grade poison that tasted like black pepper. After waiting for his shipment to arrive and proceeding to synthesize his new weapon, Isaac slipped into the kitchen about an hour before lunchtime and, when no one was around, dumped a large quantity of the poison into the stew that would be served that day. The dilute quantity meant that everyone would get a little sick, but the worst that could happen was that they'd be bedridden for a few days. Unfortunately, this meant he himself would suffer, but that was the price he'd have to pay to cover his tracks. The real work lay in slipping the poison into Jason's food. He couldn't do it in front of everyone, that was for certain; he would have to taint his dinner, which he would likely eat alone, rather than at the mess hall. Many a schemer would have grinned mischievously at the plan's progress, but Isaac remained stone-faced. He would not be satisfied until Jason was dead. Isaac ventured back into the kitchen a few hours after his deadly stew had been consumed. The cooks were all taking their break for the afternoon, so he was once again left on his own. On one of the counters sat a plate of cured ham that looked as though it was the lunch of one of the chefs. Isaac stole the food and quickly left the kitchen. He sprinkled on the poison liberally, then searched for a servant roaming the halls. Upon finding one, he approached him with the plate in hand, a worried look on his face. "Excuse me," he began with false politeness in his voice, "but I've been told to deliver this ham to Jason DuGrine. It's a surprise treat from his mother, but I've been looking around for quite a while, and I'm worried it might get cold." The servant smiled sweetly. "Quite alright, sir, I'll have it to him in no time." Isaac was relieved of the plate and the servant promptly headed to a nearby tavern, where he knew Jason and his lackeys liked to relax after their daily training. OOC: More to come later. I'm tired, so I'm going to bed now. Edited by Seth, Jul 25 2009, 04:02 AM.

The Barracks were at last within Brannan's sight. It was late at night when he'd finally arrived, as the measures he'd taken to avoid being seen had delayed his travel. He'd felt the secretary stir a few times during his walk back, though this was resolved by applying pressure around her throat the way he'd done before. It wouldn't cause any serious lasting damage, but it was enough to keep her unconscious. Brannan let himself in as quietly as he could through the front door, the woman still slung over his shoulder. He went to the kitchen and placed her sitting upright in a chair before heading to the armory. He needed something to keep her fastened in place, and decided the armory was a suitable place to find such a thing. Manacles? The rope from a grappling hook, perhaps? he thought to himself. He admired a few of the swords hanging on the wall as he walked towards a work bench near the back of the room. He sorted through a few of the tools lying in sight in a bored manner. His eyes darted to a metallic shine he noticed in his periphera visionl. It was a length of chain piled up on the floor. Brannan returned to the kitchen and wrapped the chain around the woman's limbs, binding them to the chair's legs and arms. He finished by wrapping what was left of the chain's length around her torso before applying a lock at the back of the chair. Knowing there was one person he could count on to be up this late, he headed for the stairwell. "Ognus, I have the secretary. Where should I move her?" |

Ognus peeped his head around the wall under the stairwell. "Ah, I see you do! Well done, Brannan," he commented. "Hrm...I suppose we should take her out of the main room. Might frighten Alice when she comes down to make breakfast tomorrow, and we certainly can't have that. No, no, I think we'll take her to the armory." Ognus unwound his scarf and gagged Melanie with it. "Best if we keep her quiet, eh?" For some odd reason, Ognus had been wearing another scarf under the first one. Squatting down to grip the chair legs, he motioned for Brannan to come over. "I'll take the front if you'll grab the back of the chair there." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Recens was laying in bed, but he was certainly not asleep. He kept his eyes closed to keep up the facade, but his mind was racing, filled with the events of the day. The plan had been set in motion; there was no stopping it now. They would soon clash with Clark and his band...but were they ready? The ballista was a definite advantage, and it seemed to be in working shape. Recens had wanted to test it out, but the bolts for the ballista were few in number, and it would take a while to make more, and even longer to order them. There were some older javelins in the armory that had seen better days, and he had considered using them, but he decided they would be best left to use as emergency ammunition when the assault finally came. |

"Ah, of course! Hadn't thought about it scaring Alice..." Brannan replied, then frowned. "Still, the armory? She's chained down tight, but let's make sure we've got all the sharp things out of reach. She's one of Clark's, so it can't hurt to be careful." He moved to get a hold of the back of the chair. The two lifted in unison and moved Melanie to the armory. Brannan went about preparing a special area to place the chair. He decided on a corner near the work bench where he'd found the chain, then moved all the weapons and tools in the immediate area away. "Okay, let's set the chair up against that corner. Let's have her facing the wall, too. It'll cut down her visibility, and if she tips over she'll be helpless on her back." Brannan paused for a moment. "Say, you're usual Byron's choice for pulling off these sort of jobs. She's valuable as a hostage, of course, but do you think we could get any information out of her? To use against Clark and the others?" |

"It would depend upon her loyalty, really," remarked Ognus. "If she were a personal friend, I doubt she'd willingly spill information, though if they share an impartial business-only relationship, she might let a few bits slip to save herself. Little things, like what kind of equipment they possess, not what their weaknesses are." Ognus had begun pacing. "Then again, people in those situations tend to develop bonds...frankly, I doubt she'd talk without a little...persuasion. Now, I'm not against that, but..." He paused and grimaced. "...That's Jane's area of expertise." |

Brannan laughed aloud. "Is it really? I knew she had a reputation for losing her temper, but I never had her pegged as an honest-to-god sadist!" Brannan took a moment to collect himself from his outburst, holding up a hand apologetically. He had a strange sense of humor sometimes. "I agree. She's got to have some information, and anything we could get would help." He turned his head to look at Melanie, bound and still unconscious. "Quite a prize, isn't she? She may prove much more than bait for a trap..." Brannan narrowed his eyes as he considered the next action to take. He was familiar with the "persuasive" methods Ognus hinted at, and liked to think he had an above-average understanding of them. He was certain Ognus had some skill in that area, too, but perhaps it'd be for the best if everyone had their own specific role to play. They couldn't be sure how much resistance the captive would put up, after all, so having an "expert" at hand would be a definite advantage. "Alright. I'll keep an eye on the secretary and wake Jane when the time's right. You're welcome to stay with me or get some rest, Ognus, whichever you'd like." (OOC: Seth, I guess at this point you could have Melanie wake up whenever. Ognus and Brannan could continue talking, or we could just leave the RP alone and wait for the others to participate.) |

OOC: I have a plan for Melanie after the interrogation...but I'm a fan of deconstruction, so I doubt it's what you're expecting. "I appreciate it, Brannan," he said, patting him on the back. Well, the middle of his back; it was about as high as Ognus could reach comfortably. "I'll go sleep for a bit and relieve you when I wake up." With that, Ognus shuffled out of the armory and went back into the barracks, slipped underneath the stairs, and curled up and fell asleep. OOC: Now hopefully some more people will post, as they have anywhere from late afternoon to late night to work with, so they can even retroactively RP...bleh. NROOC: Me: I guess I can RP. Not much happening outside, though. XEQ is just destroying the local ecosystem. Five bats, two owls, a really big moth, six unidentified rodents, and that badger. That is the tally of things killed by XEQ in the past four hours. It could have killed more, but it has arbitrarily restricted itself to things it can see from its current position. It knows that the feast is complete by now, and that the other mercenaries will be going to their rooms. People waste so much time sleeping when they could be working. Suddenly a fox sneaks out of the undergrowth, attracted by the smell of dead animals. It finds a veritable feast of its own, but, being a fox, decides to bury all of this food in scattered locations to hide it from other predators. The dark archer allows the animal to take everything but the badger. When the orange carnivore returns for this final item, it is shot. Multiple times. Five bats, two owls, a really big moth, six unidentified rodents, a badger, and a fox. |

OOC: Wow, I was just re-reading the topic for the hell of it, and this is the first time that I noticed that Tythanin RP'd with Serena during dinner. >_< Clark awoke an hour after sunrise, half-relieved that he was still in his bed. He sheathed his dagger and gathered his belongings together, then left the room and ventured about the castle. His eyes took in all around him, noting the pristine condition of the rooms and corridors and the bright decorations near the main hall. Several hand-woven tapestries hung along the walls, depicting great battles from ages past. There were also paintings of previous rulers with their names inscribed in stone beneath them. Clark admired them silently as he walked, until he came across Harmon roaming the castle as well. "Ah, Clark! Good morning," he said cheerfully. "Lady Gast wishes to see you in the main hall, but--" Harmon paused for a minute and checked the position of the sun. "--I doubt she'll be ready for you for a few more hours. In the meantime, feel free to go where you please." With a curt nod, the soldier left him, not waiting for a reply. Clark decided he would put his free time to use and go into the marketplace. Very few shops were open, but a small armory on the third side-street away from the castle had rolled back its tent flaps early. Clark entered and chatted with the shopkeeper for a short time, then purchased a set of light leather armor. Once we get back to Karaisali, I'll commission Ralheim for a worthwhile set immediately. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kajan and his men had arrived in Karaisali shortly thereafter and immediately searched out an inn with enough space to rein in their wyverns. The first two inns they came across, the Grand Sunset and the Oasis, refused them due to lack of vacancy and lack of space for the scaly mounts, respectively. However, on the northern side of town was one called the Desert Gem, whose proprietor happened to own a small chunk of land adjacent to the inn. The soldiers stayed there for the night and rested peacefully. OOC: Yeah, not much interesting, but hey, it'll get there soon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OOC: I'll post more stuff from the view of the Fury tomorrow, since I don't have any plans other than doing lots of laundry. Chapter Six will begin shortly, and Chapter Seven not too long after that. |

(OOC: It was a ninjapost. Comes out of nowhere.) Serena The wandering mercenary had slowly drifted to sleep amongst the warm aura of friends and food and it wasn't only a little bit later when Clark announced that he would be heading back to his room that she had finally woken up. Rubbing her face drowsily, she considered joining him so they could just joke around and talk to wrap up a perfectly fine day, but she saw Weyler leaving out of the corner of her eye. With a sigh, she shifted in her seat to make herself more comfortable and looked over the remnants of the feast. She was quite satisfied, however, and now all she wanted was to spend the rest of her evening in quiet thought before falling unconscious on the castle's beds. 'Too bad it's a little to late to go hit the tavern. Sharing stories with strangers isn't a bad day to wrap up the night either.' She got out of her chair, saying a farewell to the other mercenaries before asking a servant to lead her to her room. She gave the maid a quick thanks before quickly changing into her nightwear and leaping onto the bed. 'Man, full meals and downy beds every day? These nobles have it great.' With a wide yawn, she turned in her bed and promised herself to talk to Clark the next morning. ... Speaking of next morning, it came too soon for Serena's liking. Managing to not roll off of the bed and land hard on the floor, she spent several moments sitting at the bed's edge, staring at a singular spot at the wall. Satisfied that she was fully awake, she quickly got changed and left her room, deciding to take in the sights of the city since she hadn't managed to do so last night. Skipping through the castle halls and out towards the marketplace, her money pouch begging to be reduced in weight, Serena looked around the mostly deserted marketplace. 'Hmph, I guess I'm awake a lot earlier than I thought. Oh hey, it's Clark!' Serena waved to the guild leader, a smile on her face as she jogged up to him. "Hey, what's up, boss?" |

The sun rises and XEQ knows that it is time to return to the castle. The mercenaries may leave at any time and it would not do to be left behind. The people here might find out about the arrows it was using in that battle and try to have the archer killed. Not that it would actually die, but the lack of dying would present other issues, ones that it strives to avoid. So it heads back, with a slightly lighter quiver than when it left the feast. Marching around the castle, it sees one of the female mercenaries moving in the direction of the marketplace. The earthen giant waits at the door she used to leave, assuming that she will return the same way. |

"Hey, what's up, boss?" Clark heard a familiar voice and turned to see that Serena had found him in the market place. She grinning as usual, and her infectious smiling was even more welcoming to Clark than normal. Then again, why shouldn't it be? He'd been completely healed of his injuries, gotten to eat a hot meal, and slept in a nice bed the previous night, so he was much more willing to return Serena's smile...though he had to admit that her presence in general put him at ease. It was something he wasn't used to. "Hello, Serena," he replied. "Since Jane fried my armor, I thought I'd buy a light set to replace it until I can find a proper set to replace it. What brings you here?" |

"Me? Uh...bored, I guess. Just woke up, actually." Serena said, a yawn escaping her lips to prove her point. "Anyway, since I didn't really check the place out earlier, I thought I'd spend some time taking in the sights. Unless we're like...gonna stay here for a couple of more days, but that's not usually how these things work out, right? Although I wouldn't mind staying for a bit longer...the grub was excellent! These royal types really know how to live!" Serena laughed, clasping her hands behind her back as she looked at Clark's new set of armor. "Woooow...looking pretty good there, Chief~ It might not be nearly as good, but the leather fits! Also it doesn't conduct electricity like metal, although when that electricity is being controlled by a short-tempered sage I guess nothing would really help...Well, here's to hoping that something like that never happens again, huh?" She grinned and leaned forward, watching Clark with her dark-brown eyes. "Guess this means you'll be back on the front lines officially now, huh?" |

Having seen the other mercenaries leave for their rooms, Myke decided it was time for him (and by extension the rest of the group) to do the same. Thanking the servants for their trouble, the group retired to their individual rooms. Three of four fell asleep straight away. The fourth, Tookie, did not, trying to make sense of the day. Right... I sort-of-unofficially joined a mercenary guild, ended up fighting against another world's dictatorship, nearly got killed by some guy about my age in a frackin' huge set of armour, saw things that would make any physicist weep after that fight, helped train some overly cocky soldiers and killed countless unborn children. Then I went for a walk after dinner and found out I'm on that dictatorship's sh*tlist. I also got this weird emblem thingy, which would be cool if I could actually remove it. ... I wouldn't believe a syllable of this if it had been anyone else. I mean, what next? Am I going to turn out to be the long lost son of some dark god who was sent to earth for PLANETARY DESTRCUTION? Because I hope not. That would suck. Content with the assumption "some deity hates me", Tookie too fell asleep, quite quickly compared to his norm. --- Morning came quickly to all involved, though Tookie wasn't too happy with the early wakeup. On the plus side, he had the emblem thingy that wouldn't come off to take his anger out on. Wandering around the citadel- in a group, mostly for Tookie's safety given recent events- gave him a chance to explain what had happened to Myke. Well, this is inconvenient. If this is true- and I don't see why it wouldn't be- there's more going on here than I thoguht there was. Tookie doesn't seem to have been brought into this by sheer misfortune either. --- Meanwhile, many thousands of miles above Elibe, Langras, Earth or any of those places, another young man is running like a madman through hallowed halls, barging into a very well decorated throne room. "Lady Alessia," the man cries, disturbing the woman on the throne, "I have terrible news!" "... It's about the boy, isn't it?" "Yes, ma'am! He's-" "Say no more." "But ma'am, what do we-" "do? Nothing, for now. Let Lucialde think he has won, until such a time that it is in our benefit to reclaim the boy. He may benefit from fighting amongst humans." "But--" "We do nothing, Sacchrine. You may leave now." Knowing when he was defeated, Sacchrine dutifully left the throne room to consider his lady's words. Was it worth leaving the kid down there to fend for himself when he could be so much better off training with his rightful peers? Worse, would he succumb to the darkness planted within him? (OOC: I like my new and expanded plan for Tookie's plot better. :D) |

While Serena spoke to him, Clark's small grin widened into a full smile. He liked the sound of her voice, for whatever reason. It seemed pleasant to his ears. "Yes it does. I was passed out for one battle and gimped along for another, so if I can't bring myself to fight soon, I might lose all respect as a leader." He said it jokingly, mostly because he knew that there probably wasn't anyone in the group who would challenge him, but he knew that the group as a whole would lose credibility if he couldn't fight. "I doubt this'll do much to deter Jane if I piss her off again, but it's better than iron, that's for sure. Of course, if it happens again, you'll be there to haul me off again, right?" Clark said the last bit with a grin. He still felt he owed Serena for what she'd done. |

OOC: Sorry for the double-post, but it's the only way I can make sure this is read. After a few hours spent sleeping, Ognus awoke and crept silently out to the armory, where he found Brannan and Melanie, the latter still out cold. Ognus poked Brannan to get his attention, then said, "Alright, go get some sleep, Brannan. You deserve it for the work you've done. Come get me in the morning when you wake up and we'll take it from there." |

Brannan nodded, then rose to his feet. Now that he thought about it, he was feeling fatigued. He hadn't really noticed it before due to the distraction the hostage posed for him. I'm letting this take too much control over me. This is all an act of defense, intended to demonstrate that our organization will not tolerate any offensive action taken by other mercenary bands. Of course the chief offenders are going to be made into examples...still, very unprofessional to let oneself go like this, all wrapped up in returning a slight. Though I suppose nearly being killed is a bit overqualified to be passed off as a slight. Guess I finally understand how Vastian felt. I won't make the same mistake that fool did, though... "Ognus, I hope she wakes on your watch. Sure, the suspense was nice for a while, but then I was just plain bored out of mind. There's more fun in watching grass grow, I swear..." He left the armory and made his way to his room, drifting off to sleep soon after. |

OOC: No, that's just the way the RP is going. TIMEY WIMEY STUFFS And now for somewhere completely different. --- It was an all too familiar sight for Relus. He'd spent much of his recent time outside of Elibe in Alkaan's throne room. For once, though, it was not to have orders given to him; today it was to see Lucialde lose some of Alkaan's favor. A nice change. The mystery man had shown himself merely days ago, claiming he could make the Order's dreams come true, winning Alkaan's trust far too soon for Relus' liking. "What do you mean, you want us to show our hand!?," Alkann fumed, "I thought we were to keep those parts of our forces until the last moment!" "... We were, Alkaan, but times are changing. Seeing the boy yesterday told me something very important." "Don't tell me... we were wrong?" "We weren't wrong abouyt him, Alkaan; he does have the potential to reawaken our Lord. However... he could easily be a weapon of the heavens as well, I sense Alessia's blood in him as well as our Lords." This unnerved the master of the Order, Lucialde noted. It wasn't much of a setback to him though, not the way things were going for them. "Then, would you have him killed?" "No, Alkaan," Lucialde continued, in his ever-alarming calmness, "I simply propose I take Lily, Orious and some of my... soldiers, find the boy again, and try and force his darker side into the open. It would make him ours, and we might be able to deal with the group he is with in the process." "Very well, Lucialde," Alkaan sighed, "do as you must." "Thank you, sire. Your trust in me is well placed." With this, Lucialde left the room, presumably to begin his preperations. "Relus," Alkaan said, "come here. I have orders for you." The young sage obeyed without question. "You are not simply to gather intelligence on Elibe, tempting as it might be for me. You are to, for now, tail this group that Myke and the boy seem to be with. Quite frankly, I do not trust Lucialde to follow my wishes. While I would like the boy won over to us, I fear that it will be Lucialde in control, something that seems to be happening more and more often now. Soon, Myke and Lucialde will fight, and when they do, I need you to supprt Myke in any way you can." Help Myke? I don't have any problems with this personally, but why? "It seems," Alkaan continued, "that if the Graael order succeeds, it will be Lucialde's victory and not mine. This, I cannot allow. I have worked too long for this dream to see someone else steal it from me. And- and you must not tell anyone this, until it is time for Myke to return to Langras as a hero- I do not have long left." "Alkaan?" "Listen closely Relus, and I shall tell you everything..." Relus listened, at first eager to hear what Alkaan had to say, with horror mounting as the true nature of the Order's recent successes came to him. "Oh my... but, if this is true, how could Myke possibly...?" "Sonorius... he must have Sonorius... the boy, too, has a power he must master... he will be a great asset against Lucialde, so long as he does not succumb to the darkness... you... Emysia... Lilane... all of the people Myke has met in Elibe... everyone has a role to play in coming events..." Relus only nodded. It seemed that it was time to act in accordance with his feelings more than his orders. Alkaan continued for one last sentence. "Vassarin... he must not go with you this time... not as he is now... now, go, Relus... show me my trust in you is well placed..." (OOC: This is the part that I actually know how I'm handling. >_>) |

Streak Streak had both left for bed and woken up early, and had wandered off to do a bit of exploring of the local area. Much of this time was spent in the nearby woods, though he spent some time getting acquainted with the city's nooks and crannies, as well. Streak found himself perched on the roof of one of the taller buildings in the area, taking in the sights, when he caught a glimpse of what looked to be that Clark guy conversing with one of the others from the group nearby. He descended from his perch, and made his way over. "Morning. Any idea what sort of day we're in for?" He asked cheerfully, looking between the two, ignoring that they'd barely had time to recognize that he'd joined up with them, if they remembered/recognized him at all. Other than his initial entrance, and having a very vague presence since then, he hadn't really done much of note so far. |

"You can count on me, chief! I'll take care of whatever ails ya." Serena said with a smile of confidence, pointing a thumb at her chest. She laughed and hit him lightly on the chest, shaking her head a little. "It'd be better if that never happened again though. You're getting kind of heavy, you know!" It was then that someone joined them, some guy that Serena just barely recognized as one of their own. He was probably some new recruit that had joined recently and with all the sleeping and fighting she had done lately, it wasn't much of a surprise that she didn't recognize him. Still, no need to be distant. She gave him a smile and a wave. "Nah, I have no clue. Probably 'nother lazy day and mission. Boss guy here would know more though." |

"Almost, Serena," Clark replied, his mood lightened considerably. "No mission today. Once we receive our pay we'll remain here in Gast until everyone's ready to go, then we'll be heading back to Karaisali to rest for a bit. I didn't know how long we'd be here, so I didn't snag any jobs for us today." Now that he had seen how quickly their current job had concluded, Clark felt like the gesture had been pointless; they could've easily returned and taken a night job guarding a caravan or something similar. Still, he knew the other mercenaries would appreciate the day off. |

OOC: Meanwhile, while I was foreshadowing crap for Tookie, I forgot I had characters curerently in the plot, with some more underdone aspects of stuff >_> --- Having found a suitably secluded area of the citadel to discuss things they weren't prepared to share with everybody just yet, Myke decided it was time for Tookie to explain just what the hell happened last night. "Short version; Went for walk. Got outside. Was attacked by woman claiming to be with Graael Order. Emysia realised I wasn't doing very well. She leaves banquet. Order-y type person gets dark energy thrown at her from above. She calls down some kind of winged horse. She gets away. Creepy man claiming to be her boss "apologises" to me. Gives me this bloody amulet-y thing. Amulet-y thing doesn't come off." "That's it? These people from the Order... Emysia, are they anyone we'd know?" "No," she answered, as curious as Myke as to who they were, "not that I could tell." Myke frowned at this, especially as something still wasn't right. "Tookie," he asked, "did either of them say why they were here last night?" "Nope," Tookie shrugged, "all the she-demon who tired skewering me said was that I'd sided with the Order's enemies and by extension her enemies. The other guy said nothing I could make anything of as far as motives go." "So, what do we do now, then?", Myke asked. "I'd say we stay with the mercenary group for now, at least until we've got better idea of what's going on and why I'm involved," Tookie responded. "Might give me the practice I need to hold my own the next time that she-demon comes looking for me." Myke nodded at this; Tookie definitely needed more time to get used to fighting to kill. OOC: I'll get back to not-Tookie later. Like, "when I come up with something for Van and Griez" later. >_> |

Weyler awoke late in the morning. He had difficulty falling asleep the night before. He had a bad habit of overthinking things, being aware of it, and not being able to do anything about it. All he could do was lie there and hope he'd nod off eventually. He noticed the position of the sun through the window of his room, and it became evident to him he'd overslept. It was more than likely the others were off enjoying the sights of the town, since his companions would probably have come and woken him up if it was something important. Weyler enjoyed a good stretch before getting out of bed and leaving the room to do some sight-seeing of his own. |

JARRO Jarro had awoken early in the morning, just like always. He hated sleeping in anyway, so it was only natural he would wake up early. Of course, he immediately looked out his window to find a dove perched on it. Jarro knew exactly what this meant, so he quickly got out of bed and looked at the leg of the dove to find a note attached. He removed it and as soon as he did, the dove quickly flew away, to return to his Lord. Jarro quickly read the note and was surprised to see what was within it. Things bode more poorly than he originally anticipated, and unfortunately, there wasn't much he could do now. The note mentioned that he was to stay with the mercenary company, much to his dismay, until further notice. Of course, Jarro was already aware that Clark was leaving today, so that meant he was going to have to go with him. He quickly summoned a servant to inform him that he was going to leave the castle immediately to pursue business and he simply doesn't have the time to inform the Lady that he was leaving himself. He couldn't afford to meet with her now anyway, so it was easy to make an excuse about it. The servant left and Jarro quickly gathered his things, then proceeded to make his towards town. He knew it wasn't neccessary to meet with Clark right away, as he knew where his normal base of operations resided, so he simply decided he was going to stock on some supplies for a trip and if he were to meet with Clark along the way, all the better. |

Vastian emerged from an armory in Karaisali, looking grim. He was running out of gold due to his prolonged stay, and he knew there might be a job waiting for him back at the Guild building, but he didn't want to return to the mercenary band he'd hired. He didn't hold too much belief in Weyler's offer, especially since the task he'd hired the mercenaries for had resulted in so many injuries. Then there was the issue of his shame, his failure... Vastian was at a loss. Staying meant he'd have to turn to Clark for work, which he didn't want to do, but he didn't want to leave the matter with Brannan unsettled either. Grumbling to himself, Vastian sat himself down outside the armory, looking over the sword he'd bought, though he couldn't admire its edge as much in his current state. Tightening his grip on the hilt of the blade, he closed his eyes in frustration. When he opened them again, he wasn't suprised to see Charlotte in front of him. "Nothing personal, Charlotte, but I'm never quite happy to see you." Charlotte smiled, toying with an arrow in one hand. "Fair enough, Vastian. I only come to see you when you've made a mess of things, anyhow." Vastian rose to his feet, brushed past her as he walked away. "Hey! Not so fast. I know you're looking for a push one way or the other, right? I've seen you wandering around aimlessly. You're not one to mope." She had his attention again. "You keep tabs on everyone around here, Charlotte?" "Just you and Brannan...for the most part. It's all business related. That's sort of why I came to see you. I haven't seen Brannan in a while...must've been laying low or something...but I noticed him the day before, walking through the marketplace. I'm sort of surprised you didn't bump into him yourself." "Get to the point." Vastian was more irritated than interested now. Charlotte loved to spiral around important subjects like these, taking the longest amount of time to get to the center of the matter. "Fine. I saw him for only a brief time in the marketplace, which made me suspicious. I saw him late that night for an instant carrying a woman. Looked unconscious. Perhaps a repeat of before...?" "He...Brannan didn't-" "Admit to it? Why would he? I mean, there's no hard evidence either way, but look at it this way: you're being paid by a group that thinks one way, and Brannan, who's got a very different view of the matter, beat the hell out of you. Still having trouble picking sides?" "...Don't forget they're paying you, too. Maybe they can buy your opinion; you're more easily swayed by money." "And I am most easily swayed by reputation. Speaking of which, you're not going to have much of one if you don't do something. Sitting around isn't going to make you any money. So you failed a job. You've still got your life, which is a hell of a lot more than most have after a botched mission." Vastian sighed. "...It bothers me when you make so much sense like that." "That must be why I always see you in such a foul mood. Now, listen, I don't know if you believe Brannan when he claims he's innocent, but I saw him carrying away what is most likely an abducted girl. Who knows what he's got planned for her...I wouldn't put it past him if-" She trailed off, but Vastian said nothing. He just looked her in the eye, wearing an annoyed expression again. Charlotte shook her head. "What a shame. That kind of thing used to get you good and mad all the time. Guess you've lost a bit of that chivalrous element..." 'Well, why don't you kill him, then! If you want him dead bad enough to pester me about him, you can do it yourself!" "I told you before, I don't want to kill him. I'm not at liberty to share my reasons." "Oh, but a hand in his death is fine! You're the one with the twisted morality! If I've lost any element of myself, I'm sure you're responsible!" Vastian walked past her again, and refrained from looking back this time. Charlotte watched him go, before blending into the crowd. His outburst assured her that he'd be after Brannan's life again. She could tell when she'd gotten through to him. |

I'm...HUNGRY!

Clark chatted with Serena and Streak for a little while longer, then the three of them made their way back up to the castle. The other mercenaries were gathered in the main hall, with Lady Gast standing before them. Clark, Serena, and Streak joined the others and waited for Lady Gast to speak. "I would like to thank all of you for a magnificent performance yesterday," she said, smiling at the mercenaries. "I have your payment for your services, divided up as per Clark's instruction." Servants came out bearing two trays with several small bags of gold, one for each of the mercenaries. "However..." Lady Gast's tone changed. "I would like to commission you for another task today. To the east lies the duchy of Sydelle. It has been quite some time since I have visited their castle town, and I wish to know the current state of affairs. You are to travel there and observe the town, then meet with one of the castle's messengers and report what you have seen. I will send out one of my servants shortly after you leave with your payment for when you arrive in Sydelle." While she spoke, Clark caught Weyler's eye. This was getting more and more suspicious, but there wasn't much they could do about it. Clark mouthed "wait until we leave" to Weyler; he planned to speak with him concerning the recent development. The noble lady had not noticed their exchange, and was still talking. "The payment will not be as high as today, mind you, but it will still be a substantial amount. Also, while you are there, please give the duke my warmest regards." She smiled once more and awaited their response. Clark made a show of considering whether or not to take the job, then said, "You've got yourself a deal, m'lady. Just let us gather our belongings and we'll be on our way." Clark wanted to get away from prying ears before he spoke with the mercenaries. He waited until they had left the main hall, then stopped them. "I don't know about you guys, this doesn't seem right to me. Something's up. However, we don't know what we're in for yet, so the best thing we can do is head to Sydelle and keep our guard up. Grab everything you brought with you and meet me outside the castle in ten minutes." Clark had already set his own affairs straight, so he walked out of the main doors and waited in front of the castle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alice started breakfast early in the morning as usual. "Morning, Ognus," she piped cheerfully. When no reply came, she peeked behind the stairs to see that Ognus was gone. Shrugging, she continued making breakfast; if he wanted to miss it, that was fine, but she still had to cook for the others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kajan rose early and left the inn to locate their contact for the area. Beyond the edge of town sat a squat, nondescript building with patches of sand littering the surrounding grass. When he entered, however, there was no one to be found. As he looked around in the building, he noticed scrolls and parchment behind the desk up front, suggesting that she had been working diligently. Must've headed home for some rest, he thought. Deciding it would be best to check back later, Kajan returned to the inn. |

Having nothing to prepare for themselves, with Myke and Tookie now staying armed at all times, Myke and his little entourage simply followed Clark. Tookie, having more than a few suspicions about where this was going, was not amused by the recent developments. Somethings definitely wrong in this "Sydelle". If Lady Gast just wanted to know what was going on, she could visit herself, or send some of those messengers of hers. No, she knows damn well that something's up, she's just sending people that don't really matter to her as a confirmation. |

Weyler nodded."I agree. In the case there is something...unsound in the works, the best action would be just to play along with it. It'd be bad for us if we aroused any suspicion on there part..." The latest turn of events proved bittersweet. It seemed there was something unusual going on, but it was comforting to know it wasn't simply paranoia on his part. Weyler hadn't brought anything with him, except a few things already on his person: a few small books, a pouch of coins. Lacking a reason to return to his room, he followed Clark to the front of the castle. ------- Brannan woke up at his usual time that morning, despite sleeping less. He felt as well-rested as he had the morning before. Whistling, he made his way down the stairs and to the kitchen, but didn't seat himself at the table right away. He approached Alice, smiling amiably. "Good morning. Have you heard anything from Ognus?" ------- By the time Kajan had returned, Gaddiel was up and about. He'd done some running and exercised his body, then followed that up with a bit of shadowboxing and weapon drilling with his lance. When he'd finished, he'd gone to where the mounts were kept to visit his wyvern, Baruch. Gaddiel had been forced to have a friend who remained in the Bern Army take care of the winged beast whilehe was on leave, so he tried to make up for lost time with his old comrade when he could. Hoping to get in a bit of riding practice in before the group moved on, he walked back to the inn to get his gear and other possessions. On the way, he saw Kajan. Gaddiel waved at him to get his attention as he walked towards him. "How'd it go? Did she have any important information to offer?" |

"This sounds like spying or something like that..." Serena said with a displeased look, twisting a strand of her red hair around her finger. "The only reason you'd send mercenaries to scout out a city is so whoever you're scouting doesn't realize you're the one doing it. Or, you know, it's a trap and we're all going to die to some devious plot or somesuch. Kinda morbid to think about, huh? Well...not like we can do anything. At least we got paid." Clark told them to meet out in the front gates in 10 minutes after they had all gotten their belongings before leaving himself. Serena watched him leave, trying to remember if there was anything important she had left in her room. Maybe she could steal a pillow or something. They really were good, after all. But after some more deliberation, she decided to just head out to the gates and join up with the others. The faster she got back on the road, the faster she could get this business over with. |

Streak nodded. Something about this smelled rotten. Having nothing to collect, he headed straight for the outside. Clark was already there, of course, so he took this time to quietly mention his own suspicion. "Hey, sounds to me like there might be some kind of power struggle in the works, don't you think? First she gets us to help motivate her troops to train harder, now we're being sent to scout out Sydelle?" Streak did another double-check to make sure there were no guards listening in. "If there's one stereotype I've learned about people in positions of power, it's that they're always looking to get more power. What do you think?" |

XEQ enters the main hall after the commander returns. There the group is assigned another strange job by the Lady of the castle. The dark-clad archer listens to her briefing, but hears nothing in there about fighting, killing, or even just hunting down anybody. Mercenaries do not just accept odd jobs, as far as it has heard. Clark seems to be thinking along the same lines, or at least he is suspicious of the job. He still takes it, though. He orders the mercenaries to get their stuff, which XEQ need not do, and meet him outside. It would prefer to just head back to Karaisali and wait for mallet-girl, but instead they will be marching out to Sydelle to do nothing. |

Once everyone had come down, Clark led them out of the city and on towards Sydelle. Once he felt they were safely out of range of anyone snooping from the city, he responded to everyone's questions. "A power struggle wouldn't surprise me," he said as they walked. "We weren't commissioned for this job until after they tested our battle prowess. Sydelle neighbors Gast directly, and their primary exports are their crops, which Gast more or less depends upon." Clark frowned; this was making more sense than he wanted it to. "And then there's the last problem: she asked us to give her regards to the duke himself, but he's been dead for about a year, and his sole heir was lost long ago. Lady Gast may have her hands full with governing her own territory, but there's no way she could possibly have missed that. Unless there's something I'm not seeing, I think we have our answer." The idea of becoming someone else's soldier displeased Clark, but there was little else he could do about it now. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alice returned Brannan's smile. "Sorry, but I haven't seen him this morning," she replied. "Do you have any idea where he is? He's usually not one to miss breakfast." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kajan shook his head. "She wasn't even there. I realize she's a civilian, but now's really not the best time to be sleeping in. I suppose we should do a few sweeps of the area and check back later." |

"Ah, I see," Brannan replied, "Well, last night he mentioned needing a hand with a few odd jobs around the Barracks, repairs and the like. I offered to help him out, and he said we'd start today. Once he gives the word I'll be off to help him. Oh, and he wants me to bring Jane." Brannan took his usual seat at the table and made himself comfortable. He'd forgotten about Jane until moments ago, and really didn't want to be responsible for waking her up prematurely, so he prepared himself for a long wait. ------- Gaddiel snorted. "It's a rather poor time to be sleeping in, yes. Especially when that information could save us a lot of time and effort. But I guess that's why Marakken sent so many of us, eh? In case this kind of thing happened. Maybe he didn't have a whole lot of confidence in her either..." He shook his head, irritated. "When do you want to get on those sweeps? As you said, it's late to be sleeping in. Most of the boys ought to be up by now. We could ready a squad in, oh, seven minutes, give or take." |

A lost heir returning to his rightful throne? The plot thickens. Myke said nothing, trying to process what was going on; it was certainly highly suspicious at best and a political nightmare at worst. On the other hand, he reasoned, the work would flow quite freely if the nobles were frantically trying to take advantage of a new situation, which could only be a good thing for the mercenaries. Things would be a lot more painful, true, but then it was probably better than trying to wage war on the Graael Order. (OOC: Obligatory reaction to shock and blasphemy, I'm really here for the Van/Griez --- Van and Griez arrived in the town of Karaisali after a fair amount of walking by night. While hunting for this Vergant could be profitable, it didn't seem wise for them to pin their hopes on seeing the right man who could frankly be anywhere in Elibe, when they could be looking for more reliable work. At least, Griez didn't think so. Van was quite clearly interested in the handsome reward, and looked for a nice quiet place to talk to Griez about the job. "Griez," Van said, "you seem rather down for a mercenary with the promise of a lucrative reward." "Van. You're talking about finding a man who has eluded Bern. If they're sending hordes of wyverns to scour the land for him, what hope do you think we have? Can't we find something a bit more reliable than hoping to come across the one man the Bern Army is looking for?" "It can't be that hard, they have reason to believe he's in Etruria, and they have an idea of what he's doing. At least we know roughly what we're looking for." "It wouldn't be as simple as you make it seem, and even if it was..." "... This is about you and who you want to work for, isn't it?" "Van, you can hardly blame me for being cautious about Bern, especially the nobles. I mean, look at the last 40-odd years. The Black Fang cropped up to trim down the corrupt nobles. King Desmond tried to have Zephiel assassinated, in a plot which backfired on him. Then we have the Bern Movement. Does this seem like a country you'd want to work for?" "If they're paying me better than the next country? Yes." Griez simply shook his head. There was no reasoning with Van, not when he had money on his mind... I can't believe this... If only there was some way out of this. I can't leave Van on his own; he'll run himself into the dirt looking for Vergant if there's good money in it... I don't know, maybe I should try and get him to go into army life. I hear it pays well enough... (OOC: Yay, Griez. YOU DID NOT SEE ME FAIL CANON.) Edited by Tookie, Aug 13 2009, 06:55 PM.

The mercenaries continued walking eastward, noticing that the temperature was gradually rising. Clark shed his cloak and carried it instead, left with nothing on his torso but the leather armor. He wished he'd brought a shirt to wear instead, as the armor still made him hot, but it was bearable. As the sun rose in the sky, the group crossed into the outer reaches of the city. Sydelle was a sprawling mass of buildings, with the outermost houses quite a good distance from the center of town. Most of the outer residents were farmers, and as the mercenaries progressed towards the marketplace, it became evident that Sydelle depended on crops for their economy. Clark made a note of the few buildings relevant to his interests that didn't have to do with crops and looked around for any sign of where the castle might be. It didn't take him long to find it; three tall towers pierced the sky, looming at least fifty feet above the ramparts below. The castle itself was nestled among four hills, making it fairly easy to defend in a time of siege. Sounds of fighting could be heard coming from the building. A messenger bearing the crest of Gast rode towards them frantically, his face white as a sheet. "Clark K-Kallen?" he stammered. "What is it?" Clark replied impatiently. He was already displeased with the job, and he certainly didn't want to waste time on this stuttering coward. "F-f-fighting in the c-castle! Rebels attacked!" He moaned in panic and kicked his horse, then galloped away quickly to the west. Clark scoffed. "Some servant he turned out to be. Everyone, we're going to investigate the castle. Lady Gast must have known something about this, or else she wouldn't have sent us. I want you all to be on your guard. There's no telling what awaits us in there." The doors of the castle had been flung open, and the corpses of two guards lay motionless in a pool of blood in front of the entrance. Carefully stepping over the bodies, the mercenaries entered the castle. OOC: There we go. I'll have the next event up in just a moment. |
