Leaving Jael to interrogate XEQ, Clark and the other mercenaries headed back to Karaisali. On the way, a trio of wyverns flew over them. Clark tensed up momentarily but acted as though nothing were amiss, continuing to walk towards town. Once they were in town, Clark stopped everyone near the marketplace. "You've all been working very hard the last few days, and we've been walking all across the countryside, so as a reward, you've all got the rest of today and tomorrow off. I'll sort things out with Melanie." Hopefully I can get some answers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lou came down the stairs still wearing his nightclothes, followed shortly thereafter by Jane in a furry robe, still wiping the sleep out of her eyes. Alice handed Lou his plate as soon as he entered the kitchen. "You're up early, Jane," she remarked. "I'll get started on yours right away." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kajan spied a group of travelers heading into town. Their size suggested that they were either mercenaries or a performing troupe; he made a note of the group's general composition. Further ahead, there was a girl with a mallet nearby seven giants who looked to be made of dirt along with an eighth towering figure clad entirely in black. Calling his men to follow him, Kajan pulled into a dive and landed a short distance away. "Excuse me, Miss," he shouted to Jael as he dismounted Arganek, "but what's going on here?" |

OOC: lol griez didn't even get a turn ): I can get him and Lachelle in now, though! --- Seeing that the commotion had died down almost as quickly as it had flared, and the group that seemed to be mercenaries were on their way as if nothing had happened, Griez waited a little while before following them. The man who seemed to be their leader said something about a day off, but he wasn't really paying attention to that. He was focusing on what the man looked like. Something seemed familiar about him. Is he... no, he couldn't be... oh, sweet Elmine, I hope Van doesn't see this guy... --- While Tookie internally rejoiced at the idea of a day sat around doing nothing (except possibly some sparring where he could get it), Emysia was not so comfortable. "What's the matter with you?," Myke asked her, "I thought you'd be glad of another day for us to work out what's going on..." "There's someone watching us, Myke," she answered. "Two someones, and from what I'm gathering one of them isn't roo comfortable at the moment." Myke turned around; there were indeed people watching them, and one of them seemed a bit unnerved by what he saw. "Yes?," he asked the two, "why are you staring at us?" "No reason," the man of the two said, "we were just wondering; are you Clark Kallen's Merry Band?" "... We might be," Myke said, "why does that matter?" "You see," the man said, "my associate and I here would like to join you. What do you say?" "I say you'll have to ask Clark, not me." Myke answered. "Very well, then. Which one of you is Clark?" --- OOC: whee rp to get them in thought i'd get it over with while i digest plot |

OOC: I dunno, your intuition had to be pretty damn good to figure that Clark would be the person the Bern army's looking for based off a single description, that isn't even 100% accurate because Clark's general appearance would appear somewhat different, but whatever, I won't argue against you. <_< JARRO Jarro wasn't entirely convinced leaving XEQ with Jael alone wasn't entirely a smart move, but that just might be Jarro being overly cautious and not really trusting people. Regardless, it wasn't his decision to make so he didn't comment. The next interesting moment came when a trio of wyverns flew overhead. It surprised Jarro because he wasn't really sure why Bern troops (as if there were any Etruian soldiers that rode wyverns, so it's pretty easy to assume wyverns = Bern) were in the area, even though Bern and Etruian relations have improved. Regardless, Jarro couldn't really just stop them and ask why they were here, and not only just because it's too late to even do that. However, Jarro did have to note them in a report later. The group finally arrived in Karaisali, a place Jarro wasn't fimiliar with but was at least aware that Clark's group was stationed here. Shortly after, Clark stopped the group to inform everyone that they had been given the day off. Which to Jarro, meant everyone except him. Jarro wasn't actually officially a member of the mercenary group so he couldn't be given a day off by Clark. However this presented a good opportunity to discuss some things with Clark alone (and maybe one or two other people if there really was no other choice). After Clark made the announcement, Jarro approached him and asked, "My apologies Clark, but do you mind if we can have a chance to talk in private later?" Jarro looked around the place as he awaited a response. |

Jael picks up her mallet as soon as Clark and the others are out of sight. "Now, answers. Or you never get to see your killing buddies again." Then, wyverns. Three of them. One of the riders calls out to Jael, asking what is going on. She turns to face the man, who thankfully looks less angry than Clark. Tired of explaining the situation, she summarizes. "Revenge, more or less. I want answers first, but if I don't get them, I'm going to kill this abomination." Meanwhile, a mustachioed man swaggers into an inn in Karaisali. He goes up to the front desk and asks, "Do you charge for beds, peasant?" "For you, 500 gold," says the innkeeper, offended, but not offended enough to kick out a possible customer. The man jumps back nimbly. "No wonder all of those men needed loans! And then they all died in tragic accidents. I have such miserable fortune. Well, I certainly won't be staying here!" And he struts back out. |

"Hold that thought for a moment, Jarro," Clark said quickly, then looked around for the person who had called for him. He spied a man wearing armor with studded shoulder plates and an axe; instinctively, his had went for his sword, but he stopped himself. If he called you Clark, he's clearly not a threat. "Who's asking?" Clark replied to the man. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "What do you mean, 'abomination?'" Kajan asked the girl. It wasn't his job to govern the locals, but he couldn't stand by and just let someone be murdered. Edited by Seth, Oct 14 2009, 07:01 PM.

Jael realizes that these men are almost certainly Bernese soldiers. It's one thing to tell some no-name mercenaries about their secret magical slaves. But telling representatives of the government of one of the most militarily powerful nations in Elibe is a different matter. And they've already seen the golems. A cover story is in order. "He's a murderer, and he's insane. See how he wears a mask made of dirt? He thinks that he's blending in with these weird sculptures out here and that I can't even see him. He killed someone I love, and I want to know where his body is. Mass-murderers aren't human," Jael says. Her story is absurd, but no moreso than the truth. XEQ watches the wyverns. It has never killed anything so large. If they were flying, it would be very easy to take them down simply by piercing their wings. On the ground, it figures that the large eyes would be the best targets. The arrows would go straight through and into the brain. It desires a chance to test these theories. |

"Griez and Lachelle," Griez answered, pointing at the woman by his side as he said this, "axe and staff for hire. We've been looking for work for a while," he continued, it being the most reasonable excuse he could come up with on such short notice, "and, well, we were wondering if you were hiring." OOC: Hey now, he's still far away-ish and doesn't necessarily know that XEQ is dirt-like. "Kajan, don't we have more important things to be doing?" called Jason derisively. "That's 'Major Algram' to you, Lieutenant DuGrine," Kajan replied flatly. "We may be away from home, but we are still on duty. You are correct, but you still need to respect your superior officers." Jason glared at him as Kajan mounted up again. "Yes, sir." "Sorry to have bothered you, Miss," Kajan said apologetically. "We'll be on our way now." A dirt mask? I knew Etruria was a strange place, but that really takes the cake! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We definitely need a healer, considering Jabin pretty much disappeared. Weyler was quite capable of providing healing magic to the group, but Clark knew that offensive magic was his true forte, so having someone else to wave a staff would definitely make their group stronger as a whole. Clark also wanted to observe how Griez used that axe; perhaps he could learn something from him. "We can take you on, but if you're expecting work soon, you'll be disappointed," Clark said. "We've been through a lot over the past few days, and I've given everyone the day off tomorrow." Edited by Seth, Oct 14 2009, 09:16 PM.

"Actually," Myke said, seeing a golden opportunity for Tookie here, "there is something reasonably important you could do while we're off. It's not going to be paid, sadly, but we could really do with this getting done before it's too late." "Hm?" "Griez," Myke continued, pointing out his oddly dressed counterpart, "this is Tookie. He's... well, there's potential in him, but the only practice he's had with that axe of his is the two jobs he's been with us on, with no form of training outside of that." You forgot our little jaunt to the countryside to beat the crap out of that Vassarin fellow, Tookie thought, though if this Griez was supposed to be teaching him how to swing an axe then the least he could do was look like he was about to be a good pupil. "And... you want me to change this before he gets himself killed, yes?," Griez asked, not really sure what to make of this. Looking this Tookie over, Griez did see the need for a good few days spent getting him into shape, and if it made him favourable to these two clearly senior members of the group (despite the fact that the person proposing this training duty was probably only just over half Griez's age)... "Alright," he agreed, "I'll see what I can do about him. But... do you have anything more suited to friendly sparring than what we've got on us? Lachelle could fix anything I did to him, but I'd rather not have to resort to that." --- OOC: >_> |

(OOC: Hahaha this is so short >_>) Serena 'Clark is so popular~' Serena thought to herself, a little jealous. The mercenary stood to the side, watching everyone else go around their business. She had wanted to talk to Clark herself, perhaps see if she could steal him away since they some time off. She thought he needed a break. Working hard was always a good quality and one that should be admired, but even the toughest man needed a nice break once in a while, right? So she waited until he finished talking with some new people. 'Wow, we're getting pretty big. I wonder how many people are actually in the band.' The moment he was free, she took her chance and piped up with a question of her own. "Hey chief, after you're done fixing things with Melanie, you wanna hang out with me for a while? You know, hit the town, have some fun, all that good stuff." |

"We've got some sparring weapons back at the Guild building," Clark said. "Myke should know where they are." After he had finished speaking with Myke, Tookie, and Griez, Serena came up to Clark, cheery as ever. "Hey chief, after you're done fixing things with Melanie, you wanna hang out with me for a while? You know, hit the town, have some fun, all that good stuff." Clark cracked a small smile. "That sounds swell right about now. I'll meet you by the inn after I'm done talking to Melanie." His mood considerably better since that morning, Clark turned and started towards the Guild building. "Jarro, walk with me. We can discuss your business on the way." NROOC: Me: How many people are in the band depends on your definition of people. Also, this seems like a bad time for Swanson to come looking for a job. He can wait. I think I'll resolve the XEQ situation now. The Bernese soldiers buy Jael's tale and fly away. She again waits until nobody is watching, then turns back to XEQ, offering the scroll again. "Write." But, as before, the golem archer only writes a question mark. "You must know what you did with Herbert! You did it!" the young woman yells. "Did what?" asks a voice from behind her. She turns to see a small boy, no more than 8 years old, standing there eating some meat on a stick. She tells him to go away. Instead, he comes closer, poking at a golem and then trying to climb onto it. "Let go of that golem! Get off!" shouts Jael. The boy does not listen. But the golems do. Free, XEQ grabs the mallet. It hits Jael over the head. It then breaks the handle off of the wooden weapon and drops the pieces. At this point the boy screams and runs away. Or, tries to run away. He trips over a rock, fatally slowing his progress. XEQ re-equips itself and shoots the boy. It looks at Jael, who appears to be dead. The concept of checking for breath or pulse does not occur to a being that has neither. The killer bowman returns to Karaisali, back in disguise, but no longer a mystery to the other mercenaries (well, not so much of a mystery). |

This guy Clark better know what the hell he's doing keeping that mindless killing machine around. Poor kid... OOC: imo, writer's block sucks JARRO Jarro nodded when Clark told Jarro to walk with him back to "The Merry Band's Headquarters" (OOC: as dubbed by Jarro himself). It wasn't an idea place for Jarro to discuss business, but then given Clark's schedule, may not be a better time to talk. Jarro simply figured he would have to be careful what he said then. Afterall, you can never know who might be listening, and given the recent events at Sydelle, Clark was likely to have a few eyes on him. At least, that's what Jarro feared, but he doesn't really know. So Clark and Jarro walked a ways away from the others until Jarro felt they were at a good enough distance. While the others were mostly trustworthy, this was something Jarro felt was for Clark's ears only, though Jarro supposed it wouldn't be detrimental if the others knew. Still, Jarro was better safe than sorry in this case. So Jarro finally began, "Firstly I would appreciate if you did not tell anyone else, or at least keep the details to yourself." Jarro took in the scenery as he continued, taking care to watch for anyone suspicious, "Now, there is someone, it's best if I don't say who right now, that's taken an interest in hiring your services for a later date. Unfortunately he cannot come to discuss the details with you because he is rather busy but I was told that they would come as the date neared. In the meantime, he asked that I remain here to assist you however I could if you accepted." Clark took in what Jarro was saying and thought it over as they walked. "I'd ask you who this mysterious benefactor is, but if you've been entrusted to this sort of secrecy, I doubt you'd tell me," Clark mused. "Well then, I suppose I'll have to accept tentatively, since we can't afford to turn down any jobs...but your employer would do well to know that I don't like being strung along." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alice finished making Jane's breakfast and set her plate in front of her. Jane glanced down at it and stared at it, or rather in its general direction. She looked as though she were about to fall back to sleep. Lou was eating his food at a fair pace, taking care not to make a mess. Content that everyone was enjoying breakfast, Alice went upstairs to change into her normal clothes. Once she was out of earshot, Ognus leaned over the table towards Jane. "Excuse me, Jane," he said in a low tone, "but we've recently required a very valuable resource, and would greatly appreciate your...expertise in its examination." Jane looked up at him without tilting her head back up, then took a bite out of her biscuit. "Let me eat and get dressed properly," she said while chewing her food, "then I'll meet you back down here." |

Brannan observed the exchange between his co-conspirators. He rose rom the table, bringing his dishes up to set on the counter. Brannan turned to Lou, quickly requested that he conveyed his thanks to Alice for the meal, and headed out the entrance of the barracks. There wasn't much longer to wait, so there'd be no harm in arriving a bit early. He entered the armory and found the woman he'd abducted still slumped over in the chair. Brannan shook his head and looked about for another chair. I didn't think I'd been too rough with her...better keep that in mind for next time. I doubt she's too damaged to get anything out of her, but waiting's a pain... Brannan settled for a stool, remembering he'd brought the chair the woman was bound to in from the kitchen. He positioned it a few feet away from the woman by a wall. He seated himself, leaning his back against the wall as he waited for the others to arrive. |

OOC: oh right i suppose i should check in on other affairs hf w/that lily --- Lily was puzzled. Why was Lucialde bringing her here? What could possibly be in this abandoned part of Langras? "You'll see," he said, seeming to read her thoughts once again, "once we get there." "But, she answered, looking around, "there's nothing but rocks around here." Lucialde simply smiled at her once again, and raised his left hand slightly. At first, nothing happened, but then the ground around him began to glow, and a door-shaped hole opened in a large rock just in front of him. Saying nothing, he simply walked into the newly formed cavern, beckoning Lily to follow him. ... You have to be kidding me. Well, if it tells me something about his plans, I suppose I don't really have any choice. After what felt like nearly an hour of walking underground, Lucialde stopped in front of a door, handing Lily a strange glowing spear. "What is--" "In case being with me is not enough protection from what lurks within," he said, with his usual alarming serenity. Lily was confused by this, but accepted his words at face value. She knew it would soon become apparent what he had meant. As he opened the door, she tried to glimpse through it, and she saw something hideous. It looked like some sort of eyeball, but... eyeballs didn't float and they certainly weren't that big. "Back away, little one," Lucialde said, seemingly to the eye thing. The two people walked into the room, giving Lily a chance to take in the surroundings. "Lucialde..." she said quietly, "what... what is this place?" "The future," was his answer. Lily said nothing. How could she say anything to him- to anyone- with this in mind? The eyeball was only the beginning; here, there were all sorts of creatures she could only have imagined before, and in some cases even the imagination faltered at the sight of the room. Surely... he couldn't plan to set these on that boy? Not even he-- "Do not worry," he said, once again reading her thoughts, "they will not kill him. That would be... detrimental to my plans." "Just what are your plans!?" "You will see when they are put into motion. The boy will live; beaten, scarred and traumatised, yes, but he will live and carry out my fondest desire." "But the Graael Order--" "Is just a pawn to me." "You... you monster!" "Come now, Lily. You would call me a monster in the presence of our good associates here?" "..." "Lily," Lucialde said, "I have no desire to fight you. And you... you have no choice but to co-operate with me." "What do you mean, 'no choice'!?" "Your condition for leaving us and returning to Earth... is no less than the fulfilment of my plans. Only then will you be able to put the spear behind you." "You... You can't mean that!" Now furious, Lily readied her spear. Working with Lucialde... these beasts... surely it wasn't the only way? There had to be something she could do... "Oh, but I can, and I do... Now, Lily," Lucialde continued, seeing that things were going in an unexpected direction, "you wouldn't want to provoke all of these creatures of mine, would you?" Lily said nothing. She simply charged at the man, lunging at him... lunging past him... then... weightlessness? Horrified, she looked at Lucialde. He remained expressionless, concentrating on what she could only assume was his telekinesis. Then it happened; she felt herself flying backwards, then a thud against a wall. Lifting herself up, she could only glare at Lucialde as he walked towards her. "I should feed you to these creatures for your insolence," he said, "but they do not require food... and you are still important to the plan..." "What plan could you possibly have that I would ever give two sh*ts about!?" "My plans that involve your return to Earth." "..." "... At least think about it, Lily. You may think that life in Langras is better now, but in years to come... you will regret that decision." Lily said nothing more, simply leaving the room and starting the long journey back to the Order's headquarters. Lucialde chose to remain a little longer, observing the army he had reared over the years. "Hmm... most unexpected. I had hoped she would accept her situation readily. However... One way or another, Michael Hamilton, you will be mine. I will not give up on you now... My dreams will become a reality, and both you and Lily will accept this." --- OOC: OH CRAP NAME DROP LUCIALDE YOU EVER AMBIGOUS BASTARD WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR ME |

JARRO "Well" Jarro responded, thinking he might be telling a little too much here but didn't believe it would cause any hard, "I'm sure he would tell you what job he wants you to do right now, but we're waiting for," A slight pause, "certain events to play out and I can only assume that these events could have an impact on what exactly he'll have you do." Jarro chuckled as he reminded himself all too well what may be his lord's greatest flaw, "He really doesn't like telling anyone what he's planning in detail unless it's absolutely neccessary." "As for who he is, let's just say he has more influence over the happenings of this world than you and I ever will. However, everything will become clear in due time, that I can promise." It didn't take long before the two finally arrived at their destination. |

"Hey," says a voice that Jael knows quite well. She looks up and is shocked to see Herbert standing before her. "What- what-" she tries to speak, but finds it difficult. He laughs merrily. "I'm here to greet you into heaven, my dear." She takes a look at her surroundings and sees a barren gray plain with occasional outcroppings of black stone. "This is heaven?" He twists his head and says, "Well, where else could it be? We haven't done anything to deserve otherwise, have we?" She hesitates, so he repeats his question, this time punching her head. "Well..., " she begins. He starts pummeling her head with all seven of his fists, shouting "HAVE WE? HAVE WE?!?" Then he fades away, but the pain does not. Jael opens her eyes, but the light is blinding and she quickly closes them and groans. What happened? Where am I? She tries to sit up, but isn't even sure where up is. Again she opens her eyes, squinting this time. Right, Kar-something. Came here to catch XEQ. What hit me? How long have I been out? She squints at the ground and pushes herself off from it, then sees the broken mallet. She grabs the pieces and frowns. Who broke this? I need a new one. Fourteen, no, seven golems. There were eight. Jael stands up, holding onto one of the soil creations to steady herself. Then she looks around further and sees the dead boy with an arrow protruding from his back. An arrow... What happened? XEQ. Did it hit me? How did I not see it? I can barely see. She tries to walk, but is too dizzy. "Carry me," she orders. The golems pick her up as one, allowing her to lie across their arms. "Go back to base," she commands. I need to rest. What happened? NROOC: Me: Yay, concussions. |

Clark walked into the Guild, still thinking over Jarro's words and the events of the previous days. However, his focus was broken when he realized Melanie was nowhere to be found. There was still paperwork on her desk, and everything looked normal...well, a little disheveled right around where she sat, but who could call her out on her organizational skills? She had managed their missions well so far, after all. Deciding that she must have returned home (wherever that was), Clark left and headed back toward the inn. OOC: I'll continue RPing with Clark once Tythanin and I finish the Clark/Serena C support. Please do not interact with him until that time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A few minutes later, Ognus and Jane joined Brannan in the armory. "This is her, Jane," said Ognus, walking up to Melanie's motionless form. He poked her shoulder lightly. "She's been pretty unresponsive so far. I think w--" Not listening to whatever Ognus was saying, Jane reared back and delivered a brutal backhand to Melanie's face, which was quite effective in getting her attention. "Wake up, b*tch," Jane said over Melanie's cry of pain. "I've got far better things to do than poke you with a stick." |

Brannan chuckled. It wasn't the violence that amused him, though, but the contrast between Ognus and Jane. Ognus was certainly one to put some thought into his actions and reason his way through a situation, yet he'd called in this force of nature, totally ruled by emotion. Brannan had his doubts as to how useful Jane would be when her unpredictability came into account. He must've considered that, though, and I trust him. We'll see how this goes. "Hey, Ognus,"said Brannan, smirking, "have you ever had any cases where these interrogations...ever got a little out of hand? I mean, we don't have to worry about intervening if the woman's about to die, do we?" Edited by goatfish, Oct 28 2009, 04:39 AM.

"Doubtful," said Ognus, though he didn't look too sure. "I can guarantee she'll stay safe for as long as she stays useful...after that, I'd rather not place bets." Jane had knelt down to be eye-level with Melanie and was currently tracing a variety of patterns on Melanie's arms and legs with her fingers. After a few minutes, she stopped and said coldly, "I am going to ask you a series of questions. You will answer me truthfully, or I will make you suffer pain such as you've never known. Am I clear?" Melanie nodded frantically, her eyes tearing up at the thought of what would come next. OOC: Yeah, I'll type more soon, but I've got homework. >_< |

XEQ marches up to the guild building and sees nobody around. It goes inside, but the building is empty. So it exits again, with the intent of standing outside until it sees another mercenary. It does not recall Clark mentioning any jobs to be done this day, so it anticipates a long wait. Meanwhile, Swanson Brot is in a bit of trouble. He stands up against the wall, with two burly men scowling at him and brandishing axes. "I have no money!" he cries, the words obviously paining him. The shorter of the two bandits (who will henceforth be named Joe), spits on Swanson's fancy violet leather boots. "Look, man, we can see your frills and such. I never met a poor popinjay. Have you, Bill?" The taller one shakes his head. "No, them clothes is expressive." "I think you mean expensive. And you're right. We could just take the fancy dress, and sell to some other coxcomb," proposes Joe. Bill shrugs. "You aren't worth nearly enough to touch my clothes!" pleads Swanson. Joe grins. "Irrelevant. Remove them or we kill you." Sobbing, the ex-nobleman begins removing his outer coat. |

OOC: Today is "Beat Tookie Repeatedly with Wooden Weaponry Via Shoddy RPs On Little Sleep" day. :D --- Myke lead the usual entourage- now with the two new recruits- back to the guild, going around to the back shed where the sparring weapons were. Fishing out two wooden axes that fitted Tookie and Griez (and hoping that Griez wasn't strong enough to do Tookie any lasting damage), Myke signalled the women to stand back while Griez dealt with Tookie. "There are two ways out of this," Griez said, hefting his axe, ready to make the first move, "you can impress me or I can knock you out. Which will it be?"" "I'd have to go with the-BLOODY HELL THAT WAS FAST," Tookie being brutally interrupted by Griez driving the wooden axe into his stomach. Muttering something about how he really should've seen that coming, Tookie charged the armoured man, looking to do as much damage as he could as quickly as he could. Unfortunately for Tookie, well, Griez was wearing some very thick steel and his axe was made of wood. There wasn't going to be much damage done here. By the time Tookie had realised this logical fallacy, though, he couldn't get out of the way fast enough to avoid Griez's axe crashing into his shoulder, the sound of it cracking under the axe not a pleasant thing for him. Neither was the pain typical of such injuries to bones, funnily enough. Okay, who the hell is this guy, he just broke my shoulder with a wooden axe! F*cking hell, I don't want to see what he can do with metal! Swinging the axe more feebly this time, more concerned with trying to hide how much his shoulder actually hurt him, Tookie didn't push his luck with more than one shot, finally dodging one of Griez's colossal swings. Seeing a chance to at least try and bring the man down via his less armoured legs, Tookie renewed his assaults, though he quickly learned that aiming for the chest of a man a head taller than him and aiming for the legs of the same man were two different things. "Good try, kid," Griez said, Tookie now more or less resigned to facing unconsciousness with as much dignity as he could, "but not good enough." And that was all Tookie heard before he felt an axe smash into his spine, seeing himself falling towards the ground as his vision blurred. "... He took that better than I thought he would," Myke said, after a moment's deliberation, "I expected him to try and worm his way out of this after the first shot. Think he lost it a bit after the second one, though." "Either he's incredibly brave or incredibly stupid," Griez muttered to the group, "I heard bones cracking after the second hit; if he'd said something then I would've let him take five. Lachelle, fix him up for round two. His left shoulder cracked and I have not heard bones break like that for a long time." He paused as his companion ran over to the unconscious boy, healing staff in hand. She was as good as ever, he noted, watching as she mouthed a silent prayer, channeling energy into the poor kid. "Round two?," Myke asked, "as soon as he wakes up?" "If he was prepared to try and bull his way through me with that shoulder," Griez nodded, "he'll try another round as soon as he can." "... I don't suppose we can try him with something different?," Myke suggested, racking his brains for ideas that would help Tookie succeed at not dying. "That would depend on how specific your weapons get," Griez said, trying to think of something, "he definitely needs something hefty. He's got a good swing on him, considering I felt that little wooden axe through this... hate to see that one go to waste..." "Any inspiration?" "Get me the biggest wooden swords you have," Griez said, confident in his decision, "I think they'd work for him..." --- OOC: I enjoyed beating on Tookie too much. Also, WOOO TOOKIE'S LEARNING SWORDS. :D :D :D |

OOC: Sorry this took so long...but then again, there really haven't been any other posts, so I guess it must not matter too much. Jane pulled up a chair and sat in front of Melanie, gripping her by the wrists. "Let's start with the basics. What is your name?" "M-Melanie Holstadt," came the stammered reply. "Holstadt? That's an interesting name for a guild wench," Jane commented. "Where are you from, Melanie Holstadt?" "Karaisa--AAHHN!" Melanie's reply was cut off as she gasped for breath. Her skin felt like it was boiling, and she had begun to sweat profusely. Jane smiled wickedly. "Your body needs to keep itself at a very precise temperature, Melanie. Just a little bit in either direction, and you could overheat or cease functioning." Melanie's eyes grew wider as she found her self running out of breath. Jane continued, "It is child's play for me to shift enough heat through your body to kill you in whatever way I like. You would do well to remember that from here on out. Now," she clutched the shaking Melanie's wrists tighter. "Where are you from?" "Bulgar!" she blurted out, feeling the tears begin to wash down her face. "Mm. And why have you come to this little town, Melanie Holstadt of Bulgar?" Melanie hesitated. Jane scowled, then shut her eyes and focused for a moment. Melanie shivered as the heat that had previously caused her discomfort left her body. She could feel her hands beginning to go numb, and she doubted that Jane would stop there. "I-I'm here on-n-n assign-nment-t-t," she said quickly through chattering teeth. Jane eased up slightly to make it easier for Melanie to speak. Melanie sighed with relief. "I'm here with a group that is spread out over Etruria. We're looking for a man named Isaac Vergant. He's a deserter from Bern's army with charges against him." Jane balked momentarily. "And have you found him?" Melanie kept silent for a moment, but wilted when Jane glared at her and gripped her wrists more tightly. "I think I may have. He fits the description, by any means. His name is Clark Kallen." Without warning, Jane clamped down hard on Melanie's wrists, causing her temperature to rise rapidly. "That sonnuva--" Jane began, then realized that Melanie was in danger of overheating. She let her go momentarily, then walked toward the door. "Keep her tied up," she instructed Ognus and Brannan. "I have a feeling she'll continue to prove useful." OOC: Whee, sort-of-but-not-really-if-you've-read-Clark's-profile spoilers! |

Brannan laughed, clapping his hands. Things couldn't have possibly been going better. It was all so fitting, and chances were it wouldn't require much effort on Brannan's part. He stepped forward and lifted the woman's chin upward to looker her in the eye. "Hey! Woman! Just what has this group of yours got in mind for Clark?" Clark had certainly made some powerful people angry, and Brannan was curious as to what their intentions were. But then the second, less-obvious question question dawned on him. "And just how close are the lot of you involved with the Bern army?" If we aren't careful, Melanie's friends could target the lot of us next. I covered my tracks well...but she definitely can't get out of this alive. |

Melanie did her best to look as though she felt threatened, but now that Jane was gone, she felt much more secure. She had been trained to handle these situations...but what did she have to gain? Her thoughts turned to what would happen after all of this was over. Her entry into this league of spies was halfhearted at best, and if she could use Byron's men against Bern to secure her own safety, then there was only one true course of action. "They never informed us of what would happen upon his capture," she replied. "We are all enlisted officers assigned the rank of Corporal, so we hold very little weight with Bern. Be that as it may," a slightly devilish tone crept into Melanie's voice, "I would advise you to let me go. Soldiers are beginning to spread across Etruria, and they have already landed in Karaisali. They will try to contact me. If we are unable to communicate within three days of their arrival, they will look for me." Melanie flashed a wicked smile. "So if you would kindly untie me, I will go along my merry way and pretend none of this ever happened." |

Brannan shrugged. "Of course they would. You'd be useless as a contact if they had no way of communicating with you." He stepped back towards his original position, and began pacing back and forth in semi-circle around Melanie. "I may untie you...but you've got to satisfy me first. I can ensure they won't find you, otherwise. And if you refuse to be certain of that, you can count on me damn well trying. I'll remind you that I'm the one who brought you here. Now...you must have some idea as to what your superiors intend. Do they seek his life? Merely imprisonment? Or something else entirely?" Brannan paused, waiting for an answer as he went through the capture in his head. He knew everything had gone as he'd planned it, but in the chaos of this new information, he wasn't sure if there was anything at the Guild that could lead a Bern soldier back to them... |

Melanie scowled; she hadn't expected him to call her bluff. Once she was free, she would make him pay for bringing her here. "I'm not entirely sure," she replied flatly. "The leader of the operation was present with a few soldiers when we were briefed. The soldiers seemed extremely angry, as though they were out for blood, but their leader..." Melanie faltered momentarily. When she had been given her assignment, something had seemed a bit unusual to her. "He didn't seem genuinely angry...it was like he was pretending to be mad to motivate his men." Melanie shrugged her shoulders, or at least attempted to as much as she could while still bound. "They'll have their hands full, though. Clark's a formidable fighter, and from the reports after his missions, he's only a few steps above a complete monster. But you've experienced that firsthand, haven't you?" The smirk returned to Melanie's lips. "A towering, lanky man with red hair and a vicious aura...you must be Brannan, the one Vastian was after." |

For an instant Brannan bared his teeth, but he quickly changed the expression into a grin. He was only human, he had only so much self-control...but he couldn't let her know she'd gotten to him. Jane might be able to pry out whatever he needed, but he'd prefer it if he could acquire it himself. "Ah, you know my name. Probably not the best to admit that, seeing as you hope to get out of here alive, but it's brave of you. I'll give you that. "A monster? I've heard countless mercenaries called that, but he deserves it if anyone does. He made quick work of me before...but I'm lucky enough to get a second chance. I've got my old skills back and I'm aching to use them...so don't tempt me. I'm trying to decide whether to let the Bern boys haul him off, or get to him first. I'll ask you again, is this everything you know?" Brannan was unsure of his position to negotiate her release, but she had definitely become more interesting. Not quite too interesting to dispose of, though. |

Brannan smirked. "Maybe not. But can we trust you? If you're willing to betray the damned Bern army for a price, I'd be a fool to think you'd stop there. The there's the matter of ensuring you don't attempt to flee, or sick the wyverns on us instead, or catch Clark up on all the interesting things he's missing...it's a good deal of trouble. And a heap of gold on top of that to buy your services? What an investment! Still, your services are difficult to come by otherwise. You have much to offer, but at so high a risk..." It wouldn't be impossible to arrange for someone to keep an eye on her, should she be released...but Brannan needed something that could grant him complete control. He moved over to Ognus, turning his back to Melanie as he whispered. "Ognus, what do you know about poisons? Anything we could get in her system to force her back here for an antidote on a regular basis?" |

OOC: HOLY BALLS THE PLOT IT IS oh it's not happenin yet nvm here have some prepwork i didn't really want to say this now but relus isn't really going to get another point in time where he could do this so yeah --- Hrathli was unnerved. Relus was late; this had never happened before. Had something happened? Had the Order found him out? Worse, had he been killed in Elibe? "Sir!," one of the soldiers shouted as he knocked on the door of Hrathli's quarters, "Relus of Graael is here!" "Send him in," Hrathli said. The door opened, and the sage walked in. Hrathli noted that Relus seemed somewhat dishevelled, which only made him wonder more about what was happening. "Forgive me, sir," Relus began, anxeity in his voice, "but we must move our schedule forward." "Forward?," Hrathli asked, "I can oblige, but why?" "It's Lucialde- surely your informants have given word of Lucialde. He... he means to... bring back Golgoth." "... I understand," Hrathli nodded. He didn't want to believe that it was possible, but he knew that Relus of all people could not lie about such a thing- it also served to explain why he seemed so anxious. Who couldn't be worried about Golgoth? "So," he continued, wondering what Relus had in mind, "what do we do?" "I have to return to Elibe. Alkaan's given me explicit orders to do everything in my power to help Langras' allies there." "Allies?" Hrathli was confused; he knew of no such people. "Mikalas, for one." "Mikalas... he lives?" Relus nodded. "He's been in hiding in Elibe for the last two years- he came out a few days ago to push Vassarin back to Langras, incidentally." "Then... we have a chance against Golgoth?" "Yes," Relus said, somewhat relieved now that he was thinking ahead again, "if Mikalas has Sonorius in hand, he'll at least be able to stall for us." "He can only stall against Golgoth? What good is that?" "More good than you may ever know, Hrathli. There are ways we can destroy Golgoth permanently, but I'll need to know exactly who and what we have to work with before I can commit to any plans. We'll have to deal with Lucialde as well; if he was willing to orchestrate this once, I'm sure he'll be prepared to do so again." "Of course," Hrathli agreed. "I'll bring our allies to Langras as soon as I can," Relus promised, "and then once everyone is assembled, we can formulate a plan of our own. Until then... continue training the men, and expect Lily of Graael- she'll tell you that I sent her, and I'll tell you what I need her to do once she's here." Hrathli merely nodded, trusting that Relus knew what he was doing. "You have the talisman, I trust?" "Of course," Relus said, removing part of his cloak so that Hrathli could see the talisman used to communicate amongst people such as himself. "Well then," Hrathli said, "you'll bring Mikalas and the others here as soon as you can?" "Actually," Relus said, "I'd like you to come to the gate on my signal- I'm not sure how many I can expect from Mikalas. Seven fought with him against us, but I saw more people with him when I returned to him on Alkaan's last order. I'd rather we all stay together in Langras- I have a very bad feeling about one of them." "One of them... why?" "Lucialde has plans regarding him. I can't fathom what they are, though." Hrathli said nothing. Relus motioned to leave. "Oh, and Hrathli?" "Yes?" "... Have you heard anything from Barimos?" "Only that his negotiations seem to be going smoothly. What he's arranging, though, I cannot say yet." "I understand," Relus said, leaving the room, "Until we meet again." Hrathli said nothing. The matter was escalating far too much for his comfort; how could Langras possibly survive another battle against Golgoth? Sonorius was one thing, but Mikalas surely couldn't have become a warrior like his father over two years. It just wasn't possible... --- OOC: OH MY EXPOSITION ARGH (Seth, we may need to have another quick PM spoiler chat.) |

Maria Valine A few days ago... A decrepit chapel. The cracked floors, moss ceilings, and gnarled pews all glared at the intruder. They were the eyes of guilt and regret, of sins that could never be forgiven. The Dark Hunts, the "cleansing" of towns, and the nihilism of the hierarchy, the souls that will never be in peace...a decrepit chapel. Diminutive, forgotten, and stained with the memories of corruption--a perfect symbol of their organization. The sensitive ones feel shame, the callous ones are reminded of former glory, and the intruder simply does not care. She kneels at the chipped marble altar and waits. She remained there for quite some time until, at last, a voice beckoned her. "You may enter." The door to the confessional creaked open revealing a surprisingly well preserved room; this corner had not been neglected. She took her seat behind the metal grating, where the priestly messenger resided. Their talk was not to be of past sins, but rather the ones yet to come. He spoke. "Maria Valine, you do honor to your house. Not only have you completed your task, but you accepted our summons at a great inconvenience to yourself. You shall be rewarded accordingly." "None at all. An emergency of this kind...forgive me for being excited at the prospect of a real mission." She sighed inaudibly. The orders and the payment were all that mattered. The man's voice grew solemn. "Then I will begin. This is not only a request from The Ankh, but from the Elimine Church herself. Unsettling events have occurred in Etruria in the past few months, and with the heightened paranoia from the incidents in Ilia and Lycia...this cannot be ignored. Each templar has been assigned a different mission related to the matter at hand. Yours is reconnaissance and investigation...no, your cover is reconnaissance and investigation." Maria's lips formed a sardonic grin. "Are we back to purifying blood?" He laughed. "No, we're just chasing old shadows. I have provided provisions and the general location you are supposed to explore. Report on all of the people you come into prolonged contact with. Both your blade and mind are free to act. We will get more into the particulars should you accept. We are prepared to pay..." -- Present The road continued to wind, and she knew their destination was close. For her, the ride had been hellish. She had the unfortunate honor of being acquainted with a loquacious noble by the name of Desdin, and he lived up to that reputation without fail. The only reason she tolerated him was because he fought with her uncle during the Ilian revolt that ultimately claimed his life. That troubled her further. This man thrives on catastrophe, and the fact he happened to meet her on the way was an omen graver than that of any prophecy. "Still", he said, "20000 gold is an astounding sum, even if half that is for the mission's purpose. Only a great conspiracy or cult could have them so concerned...ah, but it is never something so thoroughly enjoyable correct?" So that's why you're here. You smell smoke before it even exists... "That's right. If I'm lucky...I'll maybe get to kill a bandit or chase a thief between scribbling notes. That's all there is, really." He projected a disturbingly gentle smile. "The tragedy of life. You have grown up to be a fine lady...your parents may act cold to save face, but your uncle loved you openly and dearly. I can only imagine the pride he would feel if he saw you now. Yes, if Yumil had not murdered him..." He was truly shameless. "You blame him for everything. I must ask...lover's quarrel?" "While I admire his genius, the very thought makes me nauseous. Besides, I doubt he ever satisfied Linae. It's a miracle they did not betray each other sooner!" His smile did not fade, and he continued to reminisce of that great tragedy. He seemed to revel in its poetry. Maria could do nothing but gaze into the distance. Was there no way to silence him? She wondered how this man could possibly be so loved by those around him, her parents included. She suffered through another hour of his company before reaching the promised land. "Be careful stepping down from the carriage. Ah, it has been a pleasure Lady Valine. I look forward to our next meeting." And may God strike me dead before then...I'll take a blade through my chest over the suffering to my ears. Where to start? Her task was vague and broad in scope, and she was free to do whatever she pleased. She regretted being decked out in the full dress code--a templar knight did not exactly blend in very well. Walking around would not hurt, but she needed a place to think, somewhere comfortable. And after such a difficult journey... "...I need a good drink." -- OOC: I need to stop here for now, but I suppose this is acceptable. She's now in the general area at least. If anyone would like to interrupt her now or at her destination, feel free. Makes things easier on me. |

Clark was definitely in higher spirits now. As he took another drink from his mug, someone entering the tavern caught his eye. She was quite striking, for certain, but what caught Clark's eye was her unusual clothing. It wasn't uncommon to see mercenaries in town, of course, as Clark and the rest of the band were mercenaries themselves, but this girl had a strange air about her. Her clothing wasn't just unfamiliar, it also seemed to signify rank or standing. Bern soldiers never wore anything like that; not even special forces. Perhaps she's with the Etrurian military? Could Marakken have enlisted their help? "Serena, what d'you make of that woman that just walked in?" Clark said, trying to be inconspicuous as he pointed her out to Serena. |

Serena Serena was having the time of her life. Good food, a lively atmosphere, and one of the best dinner partners that a girl could ask for. She was practically stuffed, which might not have been a good thing considering her line of work, but at the moment she cared for nothing else. She tore of the last chunk of meat off of a chicken bone as she looked at Clark and she blinked at him when he suddenly talked about some woman that had come in. "What, one woman isn't good enough for you?" She winked at him before casually turning to take a closer look at the woman. She turned back with a intrigued look on her face. Her voice was low, trying not to catch the stranger's attention. "Huh...I don't think I've ever seen anyone dressed like that. And trust me, I've traveled to a bunch of places. Pretty...shiny there, too. I mean, look at those clothes. This is a bar, not a royal banquet. She probably has some cool story to share...I can't help but wonder." "I just hope she doesn't bring trouble. We've had more than enough of that lately." She snickered before chugging the rest of her ale. Good times. |

Ignoring Serena's playful teasing, Clark watched the stranger move out of the corner of his eye. If she's from Bern, I doubt they would send just one. Even if she's quite skilled, most of the higher-ups were legitimately scared of me. No, she's not an assassin...that, or she's got backup waiting outside. Doing his best to look uninterested in the situation, Clark turned back to face Serena. "Aye, that we have. I was thinking about taking everyone out for lunch tomorrow to reward their persistence. It's a wonder we haven't had anyone desert or get killed yet." |

OOC: Thinking it over, this is fine. She's been noticed and it would be a slightly out of character for her to start conversations with people by going up to where they are seated--she's trying to relax after all (and being tired I lack the creative energy to start an incident in the bar). I'll have my character join in the upcoming battle, if that is alright. You're ready to move on, so better to keep things in motion. I'll have little trouble retroactively moving her to a designated area. I used to be forced to do it all the time.

Clark thought back to the wench in the bandit's hideout, the rebels of Auncet, and the youth from Sydelle. He had dispatched them all swiftly and remorselessly. One more woman would be nothing. "Indeed she would." It made him nervous, though. What would happen if the other mercenaries found out who he really was? Would they still stand by him? At the end of the day, they're in this because they want to survive, not because we're some big happy family. I'll have to count on myself to survive if Bern finds me. Clark blinked, realizing he had been staring off into space for a few seconds. He turned forward again, and his eyes met Serena's. She dragged my sorry ass all the way back here, even though she didn't owe me a thing. The others stuck by me when they could have left me for dead. Clark's stern expression cracked into a small grin. No. This time, I'm not alone. After paying for the meal and enduring a bit more of Marcie's teasing, Clark and Serena left the tavern. Clark's hand strayed to the hilt of his sword as they drew close to the stranger, but he relaxed once they had passed by. OOC: I'd like to allow Tythanin the opportunity to post before I just skip to the next day, so that's why this chunk of my post is ending where it does. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OOC: Goatfish, I'm sorry...I completely forgot about the other plotlines. There will be some time-skipping in here, but it will be done pretty loosely. >_< "There's three of them that I can think of off the top of my head, but one of them needs to be imported from Ilia, so that's out. The other two can be made from materials found in town," Ognus replied hurriedly. "Best of all, they're dirt cheap. The antidotes will be a bit more expensive, but this investment may pay for itself in time. "Keep her talking. I'll see what I can do." Not waiting for a response, Ognus ran out of the shed and back into the barracks. Byron, who had been sitting at the table eating his breakfast, was quite surprised by the sudden arrival of Ognus, who wasted no time in diving behind the stairs to dig through his personal belongings. "What's gotten into you, Ognus?" Byron asked between bites of an apple. "Discover the cure for baldness?" Ognus peeped out from behind the stairs and smiled wryly. "Just taking stock. I was going to run into town to pick up a few herbs." "Don't you have to finish setting up all of the traps?" asked Byron. "Besides, I'm expecting a few messages to arrive this afternoon. Make me a list, and I'll get whatever you need when I'm out." Ognus scrawled down a list of five items on a scrap of parchment, and an hour later, Byron found himself in the marketplace of Karaisali. Stopping first at the carrier pigeon outpost, he was pleased to find that several of his old acquaintances had answered his request. Looks like we're not the only honorable ones left. After ten minutes of scrounging about and listening to an elderly lady's rant on the differences between Luxweed and Noxweed (which looked the same to Byron), he had acquired everything Ognus had asked for. Byron's last stop was to check the town square for any snippets of conversation about possible jobs. With the growing threat posed by Kallen's competition, Byron couldn't afford to be picky. As usual, the square was full of people milling about, whether en route to the market from the residential section or just standing about socializing; however, one man stood out in particular to Byron. He was dressed too nicely to be a peasant, and he kept looking about nervously. When Byron approached him, he nearly jumped out of his skin. "Are you alright, sir?" Byron asked. "I'm supposed to meet someone here, but I've been waiting for quite some time, and she hasn't shown up!" the man replied, clearly exasperated. "Who are you meeting? Perhaps I can point you in the right direction to where you might find them." "Some woman who runs the local mercenary guild. Lady Gast said it was urgent that I get this to her by this afternoon--" the man showed Byron a scroll that had been bound, "--but I don't know what to do! This is my first big assignment, and I can't afford to be demoted!" The man was sweating profusely and looked to be on the verge of a panic attack. At the drop of Gast's name, Byron's eyes gleamed. A noble, eh? This is too good to pass up. "You're in luck," Byron replied. "I work for the guild. My employer is a bit tied up with work at the moment and sent me in her stead." "Oh, thank goodness!" cried the man. "No problem, sir," Byron said as he took the scroll. "Give my employer's regards to Lady Gast." It's alright, Kallen; you won't be missing this job much. After tomorrow, you'll have far more to worry about than just finding work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kajan and his team returned from their scouting mission feeling frustrated. He noticed that Gaddiel and his team had returned, and decided to discuss the results with him. Kicking a rock along the ground, Kajan asked, "How'd it go, Gaddiel?" OOC: Yeah, I know, pretty blunt and direct, but I didn't really have much for this one. >_> |

Serena The rest of the meal proceeded without any more sudden interruptions, Serena silently enjoying Clark's company as she polished off the rest of her meal. Grinning in satisfaction, she walked by his side as they left, eying the strange woman briefly as they passed. 'Hah, she's got nothing on me. She better watch out and not mess with us!' And just like that, a beautiful evening ended. Walking next to the chief with her hands folded behind her head, she just took in the crisp night air with a pleased sigh. Hopefully they would have plenty of more nights like this where they could just...hang out without worrying whether or not they would be live past the next mission. And tomorrow would be another bright dawn and the start of a fresh new day. Serena sighed satisfactorily to herself. 'Life is goooood.' |

OOC: Honorable, my ass. >_> --- Tookie woke up fairly suddenly, to the sight of a rather attractive woman leaning over him with some kind of staff held slightly above his shoulder. "Oh... you're awake," she said, sighing. She got up to resume her place on the sidelines, which was more than enough for Tookie to know that round two was imminent. ... Damnit, she could've stayed there a little longer... Alright, we tried power, and that was useless... time to fight dirty... The plan was interrupted, however, when Myke brought out two wooden swords which were nearly as large as Tookie was. Shrugging, he picked one of them up and gave it a few quick swings to see how hard a time he'd have controlling it. Well, in theory. It was heftier than he'd thought a wooden sword would be, even at that size. He turned around to see Griez waiting patiently for him, axe still at the ready. "You ready?" Griez called. "Not really, but we might as well keep going." --- OOC: Yeah, I'll sum up the matches retroactively. >_> |

OOC: Goatfish, I apologize for not waiting for you to post, but today is the only day I'll have a decent chance at updating for a few more days, and I don't want this to stagnate more than it has. Clark walked back to the inn with Serena, his thoughts already moving ahead to the next day, when he would confront Melanie and hopefully get some answers. Once they had returned, he considered walking her back to her room. That might give her the wrong idea, though...then again, she might not even be thinking about that right now. This is only the second time we've done something together...surely she would just see it as a polite gesture...right? He tensed up slightly as they continued down the hall towards Serena's room. OOC: Yeah, I'm a terrible writer. >_> ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As Byron was returning to the barracks, he was stopped by Ognus. "Careful, Commander," he said, "I've set up the traps, and I'd prefer it if you didn't trip one." Byron chuckled. "Good to see you've been hard at work. I've gathered all of the supplies you needed." Ognus took the materials from Byron and led him along a twisting path back to the barracks, where he immediately set about mixing the first antidote. "Better to make sure the antidote doesn't spoil before we give her the poison," he muttered under his breath. OOC: So, in order to keep things moving, it's now morning. Anything that needed to be done the previous night (including any reactions to this post) must be done retroactively, as well as anything that would have happened during the night, such as an assassination attempt or a nightmare. I'd like to wait until Goatfish posts from Brannan's perspective before we move ahead to the events, but I'm going to go ahead and get the maps and stats ready. |

NROOC: Me: I just remembered the situation I left poor Swanson Brot in. Well, TV Tropes reminded me, and gave me a good idea in the process. A tailor walks through his shop in the morning and unlocks the door for business. The very moment he turns the lock, there is a knock. The tailor opens the door, and is shocked when a man wearing only a mustache enters, quickly closing the door behind him. "Give me your finest clothes, if you have any," says Swanson, casting doubtful glances at the available vestments. Recovering from shock, the craftsman shakes his head, his face growing red. "What is this? Who do you think you are?" he demands. The ex-nobleman looks baffled. "Why, I am Swanson Brot. If you are too ignorant to know me, you must at least have heard of my father Mandel." "So, what? You're acting the blueblood? And next you'll say your clothes were stolen while you were bathing, yes? Tell the truth," says the tailor. Swanson isn't sure how to respond. "Of course I am a nobleman. Why would you doubt my word?" "Do you take me for a fool, man? Get out of my shop!" he yells, swinging the door open. The girl who had been patiently waiting outside the door sees Swanson in the nude and starts laughing hysterically. Swanson slams the door shut. "I need something! But not just any something," he corrects himself, "it must be worthy cloth." This time, the tailor opens the door to a small crowd, most of whom join the girl in laughing. The tailor pushes Swanson out, slamming the door behind him. "What's the matter, mister, cat got your clothes?" asks somebody in the crowd. Swanson tries to shoo them all away. "This is not a joking matter! Your dirty little town has a serious crime problem!" "Oh?" asks an authoritative voice. An armored man forces his way through the crowd and grabs Swanson by the arm. "Well, getting you off the streets should help with that. Public nudity is illegal. You're coming with me." "You cannot do this to me!" exclaims the previously rich man. "I am no peasant!" Nevertheless, he is dragged directly to jail. |

OOC: Damn, couldn't edit the post. >_< *Spoils game by pointing out it's the Emperor's New Clothes* --- After the first disasterous attempt, Tookie's fights with Griez eventually became a bit more even. He still lost them, of course, but he put up slightly more of a fight each time, his strategies for dealing with the armoured man becoming gradually more effective. However, as the sun had drawn in and night had begun to fall, the two fighters and their spectators decided it was time to call it a day. Myke and his little group returned to their usual seats in the guild, noting that something was amiss with Melanie's desk but paying it no mind; after all, they reasoned, she couldn't sit there 24/7, she had to leave at some point. Unsurprisingly, Tookie was the first to drift off to sleep, the discomfort of the chair failing to outweigh the "jesus christ kid you need some sleep" factor. The others followed soon afterwards, with Griez and Lachelle staying with them for convenience and simply because they were less likely to run into Van in the guild than they were in an inn. --- Why am I doing this, the boy thought as the blindfold was tied around him, what do I gain from it? The girl at his side guided him to the ladder where he would begin climbing, and then left as soon as he was at it's base. The attendant signalled for him to start climbing, and off he went. Slowly at first, somewhat worried that he'd fall and make a prat of himself so early, he felt a little more confident once his feet were securely on the wooden grips. Up he went until he could feel no further places for his hands, which was the signal for him to start moving to the right and onto the ropes; at this point he began to shudder, for blind trapeze rope-work was not his forte. "Come on, Michael," someone called from below, "you're doing great!" He smiled feebly and continued on, edging his way closer and closer to the other side, making use of the support ropes as he went. Then as he felt the next wooden pole, something change in him. He felt a lot more confident, like he could handle everything this camp had to throw at him. He started to climb the second segment of pole, a lot faster than he had the last. "Bloody hell!" someone shouted from below amidst the standard encouragements. The second pole segment was cleared, and now it was back to the ropes. The support rope was lacking here, now being hung down sporadically instead of as a constant prop, but that wasn't going to stop him. He continued to edge along the ropes, faster than the last time, and by the time he felt the third segment of the pole he'd hit his peak. The climb didn't bother him anymore; he'd surpassed his last attempt, and any further he could do was just a well-earned bonus. He reached the top of the structure in no time at all, and soon he was moving along the beam that seperated him from total accomplishment. As he moved along the beam, he felt a strange sense of satisfaction; there were no supports here but his harness from below, every step he took now was truly his own. Soon he touched the other end of the beam and made his way back to the middle, bending over the side to indicate to the people below that he was ready to come back down and let someone else have a shot. "Well," he said to himself as he was lowered by his peers, "that wasn't so bad." He still wasn't trying the leap of faith again. Hell if he was putting his crown jewels through that again. --- OOC: Tookie's dreams/flashbacks; all based on true events. |

(OOC: This is so not going to be long.) Serena Serena walked happily next to Clark as the two of them strolled back to the inn, the flame-haired mercenary contenting herself with thoughts of that great dinner she just had and the great adventures they'd have in the future. Her mind drifted to Clark, realizing that he looked rather gallant and gentlemanly in the moonlight. Immediately the image of Clark in a formal suit popped in her mind and she restrained her laughter. It was ridiculous. She'd be the first to say that Clark looked best as he did on the battlefield, dressed in his armor and his sword in hand. Now that was a handsome sight. Before she knew it, they were inside the inn and walking towards her room. Clark was still next to her, walking...well more like escorting at this point. She smiled softly to herself. She didn't mind. It was nice. |

Jael awakens with a headache and looks around. She is inside of the abandoned building where she has been staying for the past few days with the golems. And there they are. But there should be eight. No, there should be nine. Hasn't XEQ come yet? She then realizes that she is lying on the floor and she stands up, a sudden wave of dizziness causing her to lean against the wall. How did I get here? Wasn't I just outside? It must have been a dream. Well, it's time to make it a reality. She looks around the barren room, not seeing her mallet. Did somebody break in while I was asleep and take my mallet and one golem? Or did the golem march away with the mallet? Nevermind. It isn't important. I'll just have one of them beat that monster for me. "Follow me!" she commands, exiting the building. As usual, the golems collide in their attempts to follow her. She looks at the sun to judge the time, then, satisfied, continues on to the chosen ambush location, where she leans against a pile of crates and yells, "All of you! Get into ambush positions!" Then she removes a hand mirror from her pocket and watches the dusty road behind her for signs of the mercenaries. NROOC: Me: Yeah, her memories of yesterday aren't coming back. I almost had her get anterograde amnesia too, but that seemed like a lot of work. |

OOC: Okay, I dunno how long this is gonna be, but it'll likely be extremely long /: JARRO Jarro awoke the next morning somewhat perplexed. While he accomplished the first part of his assignment, he still had no idea what exactly he was supposed to do. So he checked into an inn, not the most expensive one as one might expect from someone of his stature (he didn't want anyone getting any ideas) but he certainly avoided the cheap ones (Or something, I kinda doubt there's that many in Karaisali but whatever). It was a good strategy to employ when on the road and you needed to lay low because most people would anticipate that you're just an average traveller. Jarro also had a change of clothes that was more suited to being on the road which would all but make sure no one would get any ideas (after all, you wanted to be targetted by thieves and you would if you showed off you were rich). Jarro had just about prepared himself to leave when he heard a knock on his door. Not entirely sure if he was expected anyone, he told the person standing by the door to come in, and instead of the expected opening of the door, the person mearly materialized inside. That explained who had arrived though. "You usually open the door and walk in after knocking, you know. What if someone saw you?" Jarro was caught off guard but quickly got over the initial shock of the event. "My apologies, but I am certain no one saw me." Jarro sighed at the response, "So, what is it Darius? Surely the advisor to the Duke of Augustria has better things to do than to pay a lowly servant a visit." Darius let out a sly grin. The man at first appearance took more of the appearance of a hermit (for lack of a better word) than an advisor, draped in a purple robe that basically covered his entire body, including a portion of his head so the only thing one would see when looking at him were his mouth and nose. Truthfully, no one has ever seen him in any other garb, which, to many, makes him more than suspicious. "Jarro, I don't have time to tolerate your sarcasm at the moment. Have you made contact?" Jarro nodded. "Good, then things will move on as planned." Jarro let out a slight chuckle, "My apologies, but I wouldn't know what plan you had in mind." Darius was simply stoic in his answer, "In due time, in due time. Preperations must be made, but I imagine the order will inform you of what is required soon. In the meantime, just keep going as you are." Jarro simply shook his head in disbelief. He knew what was required of him just fine, but it would be nice to have some information every now and then. "Well, then, if that's all you need, I would like it very much if you left." Darius raised his hand, "There is one more thing," as he began searching through his robes for something, which left Jarro to go not again in his thoughts. Darius had a perchant for talking alot and saying very little, and his catch phrase often was 'one more thing' when he did. Darius took out a curious trinket from within his robes and handed it over to Jarro, who reluctantly accepted, not knowing what he needed it for. He started to finger it when he asked, "And this is for?" Darius smiled and replied, "I thought you might need a good luck charm." Jarro scoffed when he heard that and tossed the thing onto his bed and once again motioned for Darius to leave, to which he replied, "One more thing, do be careful out there. We can't afford to lose you." Jarro was starting to get irritated, though he didn't show it, but Darius was clearly dragging the meeting on longer than neccessary. Jarro acknowledged him and once again motioned for Darius to leave as politely he could muster. Darius chuckled and said, "Very well, I'll bid you adieu." And then left the same way he came in. Jarro quickly calmed down now that he left and started getting ready for the day, reluctant at first to taking the trinket with him but eventually pocketed it. He then left the inn and headed towards the guild building, having nothing better to do at the time. ROWAN At the same moment, the knight had finally managed to get back to Karaisali. He detoured to another locale to spend the night there because he didn't want to go back at first. He wasn't really sure why but it didn't bother him too much. Besides, he enjoyed himself and that's all that mattered, especially after what happened the day earlier. He put those thoughts behind him however because today was a new day, although he was getting frustrated at the fact that he still was left without any type of work. It was odd to him though, as he figured that a backwater town would have some kind of work for a gallant knight but Rowan started qustioning why he bothered staying here. He eventually decided that if he got nothing today, he would move on to the next town. So he made his way to the town square at first, mostly to listen to the gossip going around. He knew that word of the rebellion was likely to spread quickly and he often amused himself with some of the crazy tales that people come up with after such an event. Unfortunately, word didn't spread fast enough so he quit that endeavor and just plain decided to go for a walk. Surely something interesting would happen if he took a walk, Rowan thought. So walked he did. (OOC: itt, Soul can't think of a better reason for Rowan to get involved with the next event other than by being there by sheer chance and I was gonna add something else, but decided not to because it's late and it's mostly pointless >_> Plus, this is long enough already) |

OOC: Long post ahead. Clark lay awake in bed for quite a while before drifting off into sleep. As he lay there, his thoughts turned to their recent jobs, the future, and the events of that night. When he and Serena had arrived at her room, he had merely said goodbye and returned to his room, stopping once on the way back to cast an awkward glance over his shoulder, but nothing more. Why did it bother him? A month ago he didn't even know her, and while they had worked together quite a bit over the last week or so, they were just friendly co-workers...right? He couldn't afford to feel anything like that for anyone right now, and it had been a long time since he had felt that way about anyone at all. She can protect herself, though. She's got that going for her. Clark frowned. No. I don't know what Bern has up its sleeve. I've got to remain cautious. When morning came, Clark picked up his shipment of vials from the apothecary. Lamar was still nowhere to be seen. I guess he was true to his word about working tirelessly at it. Good to know. Afterward, he walked to the Guild building to find Melanie still missing. Absolutely useless, that woman. He knew it wasn't true, but her recent truancy from her job was still irritating. Feeling hungry, Clark headed to the tavern once more, deciding to have a light meal this time and just sit and enjoy the atmosphere on his day off. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ognus crept out of the barracks silently before Alice came down to the kitchen. The night before, Byron had explained his plan to Ognus, and while he didn't agree with it in all areas, he had to admit that it put the situation in their favor somewhat. All that was left to do was to meet the mercenaries indebted to Byron. As the morning progressed, everyone else in the barracks had awakened and came to the kitchen for breakfast, which Alice was diligently cooking. Byron set aside a small portion of food for Melanie, who had been gagged the night before to prevent her from calling for help. Once everyone but Jane was at the table, Byron spoke. "I have important news, everyone. As you younger ones may have noticed, it is very rare for Jane, Ognus, Recens, and myself to all handle the same job at once. The reason for this is that we're far more experienced than the average brigand, so we can take on more jobs and thus bring in more money when we split up. The fewer of us needed for each job, the better. That's why--" Byron stood up and began pacing, "--I'm sending Brannan, Lou, and Alice to Sydelle for a job we recently received. Recens will watch over you in case things turn sour. It should be a fairly quick job, so we'll wait until you return before launching our attack on Kallen." Recens groaned. "They don't need me to babysit them, you know. They're quite capable." "All the same," Byron replied, "it would give me peace of mind knowing you would be with them." Sighing, Recens accepted his fate. "Alright, then, I suppose there's nothing to be done about it. When do we leave?" "Whenever you're ready. The description made it sound like a city watch of sorts, but don't get complacent." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Major Dalton lined up his men and surveyed their formation before giving his orders. "We march on Sydelle in an hour! The castle guard has a slew of knights but is heavily comprised of combat mages. Don't stray too far from the mages and healer in your unit as you advance, or you will die. That said, we have superior numbers by far, and they are recovering from a rebellion attempt. I expect the throne to be ours by nightfall. Let us make Ruve proud!" At the end of his short speech, his soldiers cheered and waved their weapons in the air. Dalton smiled wickedly. And thus it begins. |

OOC: Okay, I've been putting this one off since just after Chapter Six, but it sets Lilane up to be a secondary healbot which fits her waaaay better than fighting. Also, it involves me commiting the grave sin of Lilane actually interacting with someone, so if I disappear I was murdered for it. =\ Oh, and possibly slightly retro. =\ --- Morning came too early for Tookie's liking, and for some reason he was one of the first to rise... the only other person that seemed to be up was Lilane, and that was only visible by her not being in the building. Concerned, Tookie left, noting that XEQ had returned at some point, and went looking for her. You know, now that I think about it, this could either be stupid or really stupid... or somehow profitable for all involved, but how likely is that? Fortunately, he didn't have to go too far before he saw her; she was in a clearing a little way away from the Guild. He walked up next to her and tried to get her attention with a tap on the shoulder. "Ah! Oh... Tookie..." Lilane wasn't very amused with his interruption, clearly. "Come on Lilane," Tookie said, "you know we shouldn't be wandering around alone. Not after Gast..." "I'm sorry," she said, as softly as ever, "it's just... I needed some time to think..." "Oh?" Tookie asked, "what about?" "Well," she said, "it's just... I never expected to have to use any of this... my magic..." Tookie merely nodded at this; she hadn't seemed like the type to be comfortable with smiting down Ye Olde Heathen Bastardes on a daily basis. It was a wonder to him that she'd even learned as much magic as she had. "Well," he said, "couldn't you, I dunno, try healing? I mean, patching us up is better than smiting all who get in our way, right?" Lilane smiled weakly; it was certainly something. "I could," she said, "but... Emysia never taught me the ins and outs of it- she couldn't, not after she'd taken up elder magic... not healing hands, anyway..." "The ins and outs aren't important," Tookie said, "do you know roughly how it works?" She nodded. "Right then," he continued, "if you know roughly how it works, why not try it?" He rolled up his left sleeve, concerned he might have to take a few pieces of it out for this little experiment to work. "What... what are you doing?" she asked, as he took one of the little hatchets out of the pouch. "I need an injury before you can heal anything, right?" he said, a bit nervous. "If worst comes to worst I'll just have to ask Lachelle or someone to deal with it." With that, he ran a finger along his upper arm to find a spot that wouldn't hurt too much if the plan backfired, then made enough of a cut with the hatchet for it to be clearly visible. "Dammit," he muttered, clenching his teeth, "called it wrong. Alright, whatever it is you have to do for this to work, do it quickly before I lose too much blood..." "A-alright..." she said under her breath, holding her hands just over the cut Tookie had made, murmuring the prayer she'd read in her old tomes. Sure enough, a pale blue aura emenated from her hands and over the wound, sealing it much faster than it would have sealed naturally. "That... wow," Tookie said, "I didn't actually think that would work." He flexed it a bit, just to be on the safe side. "Yep, it's definitely healed." Nothing like self mutilation to enforce results, I guess... Lilane was very pleased with herself; she'd found a way she could be helpful to Myke and the others, and she'd seen a side to Tookie that wasn't just a guy who enjoyed hacking people to pieces too much. "Come on," Tookie said, starting to walk back towards the guild. "I'm not a morning person, so if I'm awake Myke and the others probably are, and I don't think we should make him worry too much if we can help it." --- OOC: FINALLY. HAD THIS ON MY MIND FOR LIKE TWO/THREE MONTHS OR SO. Edited by Tookie, Dec 9 2009, 08:03 PM.

Recens, Brannan, Lou, and Alice all departed from the barracks heading north for Sydelle. Recens had a sneaking suspicion that there was more to this mission than Byron was letting on; after all, why were they suddenly being contracted by nobility? From what he had learned from the older members, Recens knew that their group had been employed by wealthy merchants before, but they had yet to work for any noble, and they weren't an up-and-coming group that was finally starting to make a splash; this was their prime. Recens shrugged it off for the moment, though, and focused on not getting lost on the way to Sydelle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lug glanced up to see a naked man (covering himself) being led into the jail and thrown into the cell beside his. He rolled his eyes and tapped his fingers along the ground, still seething. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After a short while of waiting, Ognus saw a few of Byron's acquaintances approaching. As a result of working with Byron for several years, Ognus knew most of them by name, but he remained respectful so as to not offend any of them. "Good to see you, Ocelot. Are you still calling yourselves the Dune Beasts?" The one called Ocelot smiled and clapped Ognus on the shoulder. "Of course! It's a name that gets our point across quite effectively, my friend." Ognus chuckled and greeted his three companions, who were followed shortly thereafter by a group of figures in hooded cloaks. Ognus didn't recognize these ones, but he met them cordially all the same. Once all of the others had arrived, Ognus led them back to the barracks, taking care to avoid the traps that were set. The melee fighters stretched out and paced while the spellcasters sat on the ground and meditated. One of the mercenary leaders, a fierce-looking woman astride a pegasus, approached Ognus and dismounted. "My men are getting anxious. When will we attack?" "Once Jane is ready," replied Byron from the doorway of the barracks. "You look as lovely as ever, Noelle." Noelle scowled. "And you're as insensitive as ever, Byron. Now is not the time for your lecherous antics." "Fair enough. I'll go over the plan with all of you now, and then we'll have Jane set things into motion." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Halfway to Sydelle, Lou stopped and frantically searched through his pockets. "Damn! I need to run back and grab another tome!" Recens glanced back at him. "Don't you have one with you?" "Yes," Lou exclaimed, "but this one's almost out of magical energy!" "What?" Lou shook his head. "Even if I explained it, I doubt you would understand. I'll meet you guys there." Before Recens could object, Lou was running back down the road. He sighed and turned to Alice. "Do you know what he was talking about?" She smiled and shook her head. "Nope! Not a clue. My staves break when I use them too much, but that's the only way that I've ever been able to tell if I can use them or not." "It's a good thing you can cook, Alice, or you'd be just about useless," Recens teased. "Hey! That's just rude! Brannan!" She looked to the towering swordsman for aid. "Are you just going to let him say that?" "Oh, I bet Brannan feels the same way," Recens said with a wink. "But as long as you know how to cook, we'll keep you around." OOC: More banter. I'll give you guys some time to reply before I push us into the event, but everything that needed to be done is now all set up. |

"I'm afriad you've got me wrong there, Recens. I'm not too far gone with the mercenary business to lack appreciation for having my sorry hide saved." Brannan smiled. "But the cooking is nice, too." He thought little of the details of the task at hand. Regardless of what the job entailed, it was an opportunity to test himself against a live adversary, and that's all that concerned Brannan. He needed to be sure of himself before he could face Clark again, and with the attack coming so soon after the current assignment, he was feeling especially driven. |

Serena It was another morning. Serena could have said it was another beautiful morning that had graced the world this day and she would have been correct. Just like always, life was great and adventure always loomed ahead. She would have said this if she didn't feel absolutely terrible this morning. Her stomach was churning, her fingers were chilled to the bone, and she could have filled an ocean from the sweat pouring off of her brow. And her head was pounding too, although that probably was from the alcohol she had drunk last night. 'Uuuurg...what a party...and all it did was stuff my gut. Last time I do that for a while...' She rolled out of the bed with a tired groan and slowly got herself dressed. She felt like a zombie...whatever that was. She had heard it from a friend of hers on the road. Mindless beings that shambled around at a rate that could possibly frighten slugs and hungered for brains because brains...were obviously full of nutrients and proteins. She wasn't exactly sure about that; it had been a long time ago. Either way, she stumbled to the meeting area with her equipment loosely fitted and worn. She raised a shaky hand in greeting, offering the gathered mercenaries a slim smile. "H-Hey guys. Who's ready for some action?" 'Cause it is totally not me.' |

Bored from sitting in place for too long, Clark headed over to the Guild to see if Melanie was there yet. She was not, but several of the mercenaries were. "I see you're all enjoying your day off," Clark mused aloud. |

OOC: And then there was advancement! The morning of the attack, Jane went through her usual routine. After getting out of bed, she quickly ate breakfast, had an extra glass of water, and went upstairs to prepare for the rest of the day. She changed into a clean set of undergarments and put on her robe, emblazoned with streaks of red and orange to signify her specialization in fire magic. She brushed her hair, though as she stared at her reflection in the broken mirror she held, Jane couldn't help but wonder why. After all, there was no one to impress, really. Still, it was a force of habit from her teenage years, and she had never seen fit to stop. However, today was a special day that required extra preparation. Jane pulled a squat wooden box out from under her bed, blew the dust off of the lid, and opened it. Within rested two of her most prized possessions. The first was her thesis that had been her final assignment before graduation. When she had tested it for her professor, the results had been above and beyond anything she had expected. She touched the tome's leathery cover and traced the title, "FALAXSEAR" with her finger, smiling at the memory of her days at the academy. The second was a gift from one of her theory teachers, Professor Mandel. He had a surprising amount of valuable relics and other magical items lying around, and occasionally gave them away to students for no reason other than because he admired their work. Both tomes would be put to use today; Jane was almost nervous. Almost. When Jane strode out of the barracks, she was brimming with confidence in herself, knowing that the odds of her enemies making their way through all that had been laid out before them were slim to none. "Finally!" remarked Noelle, growing ever impatient. "What took you s--" "Quiet," Jane snarled. "I will need a moment." Byron began barking out orders. "Everyone, get into position while Jane prepares! Boar and Marlin, prepare your men to flank Clark's mercenaries! Osprey, your team needs to wait until they are surrounded on three sides before coming out from your hiding place! Keep an eye out for each other, and do your best to avoid friendly fire! We'll celebrate at the pub when this is over!" Once his instructions were complete, the mercenaries scattered to their various positions. Jane opened her tome to the seventh page and began muttering an incantation under her breath. As the spell progressed, Jane's words grew louder, and the sky above her turned a murky gray. Halfway through, she closed her eyes and continued the spell; it came as naturally as saying her own name. She could feel the magical energy imbued into the tome flowing into her. When the spell was complete, her fingertips were glowing. Jane opened her eyes and raised her arms to the sky. "Time to make it rain," she said with a soft smile. Jane made a slashing motion diagonally across her body with her left arm. Without warning, a streak of fire ripped through the sky and came crashing down into Karaisali's town square, exploding upon impact. Not bad aim for this distance, thought Jane to herself. Wasting no time, Jane continued making various patterns in the air with her arms, directing the bursts of magic to and fro as they decimated Karaisali. As each terrible blaze met its target with a deafening roar, the citizens of the town fell into a state of panic. After the town square, the marketplace suffered multiple hits, as well as the residential sector. The town's prison collapsed upon itself, and a good chunk of the Grand Sunset had been blasted away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The unexpected impact caused Clark to nearly fall over. As he regained his balanced, he turned around to see what was happening in Karaisali. What he saw left him speechless: several craters had been gouged out of the main streets and several buildings were in flames, and the townspeople...Clark saw that the majority were running for their lives, but some had caught on fire and were being roasted alive, while others had been trapped under rubble while their loved ones tried feebly to excavate them. Clark and the other mercenaries took to the streets to find the cause of the devastation, when suddenly someone began shouting his name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Byron looked uneasy as he saw the ruin that was being brought to the small town. "Er, Jane, don't you think you might be going a little overboard?" he asked, trying to reason with her. "Hush, Byron. You're interrupting my masterpiece," she replied, completely enthralled by the chaos she was creating. With a sigh, Byron walked past her to act out his part of the plan. Cupping his hands to his face to amplify the sound, he began shouting, "CLARK KALLEN! COME RECEIVE YOUR RETRIBUTION!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Byron?! Clark could not believe Byron would resort to such underhanded tactics, but he was faced with irrefutable evidence. He drew his sword and addressed those of his men that were present. "I don't know how the rest of you are feeling right now. If you want to turn and run, I wouldn't blame you," he said with a hard look in his eyes, "but I will not allow this to continue. This town is my home now, and I am going to go defend it. You're all welcome to join me." Without another word, Clark drew his sword and tore off towards the sound of Byron's voice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OOC: Okay, so there's that side of things. If your character(s) aren't currently with the other mercenaries, feel free to have them join up now. If you don't get a chance to RP before the event starts (I'd like to start in the next 24 hours if possible), just retroactively RP when you can. Now, the other side: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Recens, Brannan, and Alice arrived in Sydelle in the afternoon. "Byron said that our contact would meet us in the inn closes to the west entrance," Recens told the others. "Let's hope he's not too hard to find." As the trio walked across the main road towards the inn, they were nearly trampled by a courier riding at breakneck pace on a horse. Recens turned to yell at the man, but he was long gone. Sighing, he and the others continued towards the inn, which they found with no trouble. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alexander was pacing within his castle, staring up at the ceiling. What a lonely place. It's nothing like I thought it would be. Since the rebellion, his guards had not allowed him to step outside for fear of an assassination attempt. His only companions were Cobalt and Valerie; no one from the castle remembered him from when he was a child. One of the guards tapped him on the soldier, causing him to jump as his reverie was broken. "Sir," the guard said, unfazed by his reaction, "there's a messenger at the door awaiting you." "Ah, send him in," he replied. The man who had nearly trampled Brannan, Alice, and Recens dismounted from his horse and walked calmly to Alexander's side. "A message for the duke of Sydelle from the duke of Ruve," said the messenger formally. "My men will come calling at your door. If you do not surrender, they will raze the lands of Sydelle and take your castle by force. That is all, sir." The messenger then returned to his horse and rode away as Alexander attempted to comprehend what was happening. "Oh...oh, sweet Elimine..." he whispered to himself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Within the inn sat a short, pudgy man dressed in green and brown, the colors of Gast. He glanced reprovingly at the mercenaries when they entered, then stood and approached them. "I must say, you certainly aren't the rugged knights Her Grace makes you out to be," he said snidely, "but I suppose you'll do. Milady requests that you watch over this town for a short period and attempt to maintain the peace. This is your base pay--" He handed Recens a large sack which was quite heavy with gold. "--but you will receive much more if you continue to offer your services. Remember: maintain order." The man walked to the door and stepped outside, calling back over his shoulder, "There was a rebellion here recently, though the townspeople are the least of your worries." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cobalt glanced down at Alexander from the balcony and noticed immediately that something was wrong. When he walked down the stairs and approached the duke, Alexander's face was downcast and he was shaking. "What seems to be the trouble, milord?" Cobalt asked gruffly. "We've...we've been ordered to surrender to Ruve," replied Alexander. "If we do not relinquish this land and this castle...they will destroy the town and seize the castle. They'll probably kill all of the guards and make examples of us to control whatever citizens they leave alive." Alexander gripped Cobalt's shoulders. "What the hell am I supposed to do now, Cobalt?! Nothing has prepared me for this!" Cobalt could see the panic and fear in Alexander's eyes, but beyond that he could see one thing burning fervently: rage. "Milord, if we surrender, will you be killed?" he asked impassively. "Most likely, but--" "And if we do not, and they claim this castle," he continued, "surely your life will be forfeit?" "Of course, th--" "And were we to meet the enemy at the gates and stand against him...what then?" Alexander stared at him. "You can't possibly be thinking that. That's--" "Suicide?" Cobalt finished for him. "Yes, perhaps...but if there is even the faintest hope for survival, wouldn't it be the only true choice available? Even if they were to spare your life if you surrendered, would you give up so easily the life you fought for years to reclaim?" "I...I don't know, honestly..." "While you think about that, I'm going to go get Valerie." "Already present and accounted for, sir!" Valerie chirped from behind him. "Mm. Well, milord, you know that the two of us are bound by our contract to follow your commands; if you should remain here, we will wait with you as the enemy lays claim to your home, and if you should charge the line and take on whatever hell lies outside these walls, well, we'll fight by your side to the bitter end." Cobalt stepped forward until he was face to face with Alexander. "Pardon my rudeness, milord, but it's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." He reached down to Alexander's side, drew the young duke's sword and pressed it firmly into his hand. "Show them how a Sacaean fights." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OOC: Yeah, last chance for reactions and all that. I'm going to kick the events off tomorrow. Get to it! Edited by Seth, Dec 12 2009, 03:27 PM.

Weyler's late breakfast was interrupted by screams and tremors. He nearly fell from his stool in the bakery he'd visited. He reached for the counter to balance himself, reached into his pockets for a few coins to leave behind, and rushed for the door. The town was ablaze, riddled with craters and ruined buildings. Villagers ran wildly about, fearing for their lives. Unsure of what to do, he took to running himself, heading straight to the town square. The damage there was most severe, and he couldn't help but stand in awe of it. It'd take a good deal of power to generate such force. As the number of townsfolk in the vicinity lessened, he could make yelling from somewhere in town. There was no edge of terror or pleading in this voice, which made it stand out all the more to Weyler. He took again, running for the source as best he could locate it. |

NROOC: Me: Darn, I forgot Alonso's last name was Mandel. Well, Swanson's father is dead, so it shouldn't matter. Now, reactions! XEQ is still standing outside the building when fire rains down from the sky. It immediately marches towards the initial fireball's landing site, an arrow in its bow and ready to shoot at the mage responsible. It sees no mage, but the fire continues to fall. Then it gets hit. Itself unharmed, XEQ still attempts to put out the flames, waving around its arms. This only makes things worse. After a few brief seconds, the golem's layers of dark clothing have become nothing but ash. (Ignore the fact that such a fire would have destroyed its bow and arrows too, please.) Luckily for XEQ, the people of Karaisali are too busy panicking to notice the earthen being in their midst. To prevent this situation from ending, it marches after Clark as fast as it can. Meanwhile, Swanson has just been shoved into a filthy jail cell. "This is unjust! I am the victim here! My beautiful clothes were stolen from me at axe-point!" he pleads to the guard, who ignores him. Then the building collapses in a flaming explosion. Swanson screams a high-pitched, girly sort of scream. Only when he needs to breath does he open his eyes to survey the destruction. Somehow the ceiling of his cell held up. As did the walls and bars. But all that is left of the guard is an arm poking out from under a pile of smoldering rubble. Conveniently, it's the one with the keys. Swanson sees this and tries to carefully squat without touching the floor and reach through the bars without touching them either. He succeeds in grabbing the keys, but the hand twitches, sending the nude ex-nobleman reeling back onto the disgusting floor. "Why me?" he sobs. Why won't this headache go away? wonders Jael, trying to keep her attention on the mirror despite no sign of XEQ or the other mercenaries. Then she hears loud noises and screaming from the direction of Karaisali. Looking up from her mirror, her eyes widen as fire rains down upon the unsuspecting town. Her mouth opens and closes a few times before words come out. "FOLLOW ME!" she commands, running towards the town. As she gets closer, she sees that buildings have collapsed and flames are spreading all over. "Get in there and get the people out!" she shouts, pointing at the town in general. The golems obediently march into the town. They will be too late to do much good, but I have to try. |
