I'm...HUNGRY!

At the sight of Dalton's forces fleeing, the citizens of Sydelle poured out of their houses and onto the streets, cheering and celebrating loudly that their town had been spared. Out on the battlefield, Alexander and Recens began directing their men about. "Alice, go heal that man enough to keep him alive," Recens instructed her. "Brannan and I need to speak with the duke for a moment." "Valerie, if you would, please tie up the enemy's commander," Alexander said. "He may have important information." "Now you're thinking like a leader," Cobalt remarked. "He'll make a fine hostage as well, once we've gotten what we need from him." Alexander offered up a smile of appreciation, but his thoughts were elsewhere. He had been stunned initially when he killed the first soldier, but the feeling wore off almost immediately and he hadn't been stricken by it since. He worried about what this might mean. Could it be that he was suited to murder? Brushing it aside, Alexander looked around at everyone who had participated in the fight. There were several faces that he didn't recognize, and he knew they must have joined in during the attack. He walked to a position that put him fairly close to everyone and made sure that he could face all of them at once, then addressed the entire group. "On the behalf of all of Sydelle, I'd like to thank you all for what you've done today," he said earnestly. "For your efforts, you will all be rewarded handsomely." Alexander knew that Ruve would send more men after him, and the only safe option at this point was to lead a counterattack. Unfortunately, without the help of these people, he doubted he and his men would get very far, so he needed something to keep them around. Alexander disliked the political nature of his decision, but he had yet to meet anyone that money couldn't sway. |

FAIRAH Just like that, the battle was over. Fairah was uncertain how it just worked out like that, but it did. She'd need to thank the stupidity of the enemy waltzing up to Ruby like that not even try to attack her and instead just let her rip him apart. But it was that very fact that it just happened that worried her. The enemy couldn't possibly be so stupid as to just walk up to an enemy, let alone an enemy wyvern, and not even try to attack. Something was obviously amiss. Fairah and Frost both ran up to her after the battle had been won, while Ruby watched over their new prisoner. Ruby noticed her comrades but wasn't her usual cheerful self after having just won a battle so decisively. This worried Fairah even more, so she might as well get to the bottom of things, "So, Ruby, what did the enemy say to you? What made him just walk up to you so casually like that?" Ruby saw the expression Fairah and Frost gave, they knew something was up, so Ruby decided it was best to just get to the point, "Ruve isn't alone, they have some allies from Bern backing them up, and he mistook me as one of them." This was quite a predicament. Bern was now involved in Etruian affairs, worse yet, allied itself with the enemy. Fairah had hoped it wasn't that serious, but it was the only explanation that made even remote sense. Frost and Ruby just stared on as Fairah seemed to contemplate this new development, "So Bern huh?" Fairah eventually just shook herself back to reality, knowing full well that they couldn't do anything by themselves now. They needed to speak with the duke now. "Okay then, Ruby, you keep watching him, Frost, come with me. We need to speak with the duke immediately." |

OOC: Okay, this is all going to be stuff that isn't important yet (read; it's important when myke's plot kicks in), but I'd like to get it out of the way now Also, I should probably try and get the Bladier Remnants in now. >_> --- Hrathli sighed. Despite Relus' assurances that there would be a plan of action when the time came, he couldn't see it. How could a world run so barren by the Graael Order hope to fight Golgoth? Even with Mikalas... even with Sonorious... it wasn't possible. Defeating Golgoth previously had required such massive loss of life... there was no way around it. He- the army had done what they could, keeping the royalty and what was left of the citizens safe, but there were too few people... and they would all die as Golgoth was reborn... --- Lily was still shaken from what Lucialde had shown and told her yesterday; how could he plan that- all of that- with no remorse? She thought back to the boy she'd faced at that keep- Gast- was it?- and how out of place he looked here... was he like her, from Earth? Was he just trying to make light of his situation for his sanity's sake, or was he just that arrogant? she didn't really know, and she didn't really care. All she knew was that if he was really the target of Lucialde's schemes... well, she felt sorry for him. The least she could do was spare him whatever fate Lucialde had in mind... --- Vassarin was still confined. It was for thge best, really; Alkaan had done something to him after that last battle... something horrible that he didn't want the rest of the Order to know the whole story behind... that power... that look... was that really Golgoth, the great demon of Lagrasian myth? What did Alkaan have to do with him? And what was this power coursing through him? It didn't matter; he wasn't getting to use it. He finally had strengh enough to destroy the Ienthi brat and all who would rally behind him, and he couldn't use it. As long as he was trapped like this, he was more helpless than ever before. --- Four figures walked towards Sydelle; two men and two girls. They'd raised eyebrows at the sight of troops from another Etrurian province fleeing, though they didn't bother to ask themselves why, surely they'd find out soon enough. They just continued walking towards the city and the gathering of soldiers just outside it, considering the possible implications of these most recent events for their purses. --- OOC: okay this wasnt as long as i thought it would be but oh well >_> |

Using Ocelot's momentum against him, Clark ducked low and swept his legs out from under him, knocking his blade away as well in the process. He wasted no time in leaping over his foe, not bothering to kill him. Clark knew there were bigger fish to fry, and he wanted to settle this. Ognus, on the other hand, was willing to be patient. "Hah, fancy meeting you again!" he remarked as Myke charged. "Might want to be careful where you step, y'see, because there's--" He paused as Myke fell into one of the traps he had set. "Well, no sense in warning you now that you already know. Hurry up and get out of there so we can settle this." A nearby sage readied a spell to rain down on Myke, but Ognus stopped him. "This is a duel between gentlemen, so if you please--" He was interrupted by a javelin whistling through the air and grazing his side. "Gah!" Ognus looked about furiously for the perpetrator, who he found was a man that looked oddly like Kallen. This only fazed him for a moment, and he quickly retaliated with a salvo of knives. By this time, Clark had made it to Byron. "I didn't know you scared so easily, Byron," Clark jeered. "Had to call in all your buddies to help you out, did you? A fat lot of good that did." "What would you know about it, Kallen?" Byron spat. "At least I have enough diplomacy to make allies. All you seem to be able to generate are corpses. That's why you had to leave, remember?" "Enough talk!" Clark snarled, sword in hand. "Let's finish this!" Clark feinted to the left, then ducked and brought his sword around from the right, cutting deep into Byron's leather armor. From the pained expression on Byron's face, he knew he had struck flesh. Clark continued his brutal assault by twisting the blade and bringing it back out, then slashing in a downward arc across Byron's chest. The large axeman attempted to block his strike, but Clark was too fast, and Byron found himself fighting to survive with his back against the wall. Ognus glanced over his shoulder and saw the state that Byron was in. Myke had just managed to crawl out of the hole, but Ognus ditched him to save his commander. "Sorry!" Ognus called back to Myke. "Perhaps next time we'll have our duel!" Without another word, Ognus slipped another knife down his sleeve and into his hand. Taking careful aim, he stepped and threw with all of his might as Clark attempted one final swing to end Byron's life. The knife rammed into his arm, causing him to drop his sword and howl in agony. He wrenched it out and flung it to the side and picked up his sword, ready once more to kill Byron...but he stopped cold as the most terrifying sound in the world reached his ears. It was a sound he hadn't heard in months, and he had hoped he would never hear it again. Wyverns. A legion of leathery wings beating against the sky in unison. Clark pointed his eyes to the sky fearfully, and his terror was confirmed: there was a squad of wyvern knights flying over to them, and despite the great distance between them he already knew Kajan would be leading them. "RUN!" Clark shouted as loudly as he could. "BACK TO KARAISALI RIGHT NOW!" Up in the sky, Kajan and his men began their descent, converging on the ever-shrinking group of people dotting the plains below. To Kajan's surprise, most of the ones to the south began running away when they caught sight of the wyverns. Kajan found this odd, and he directed the squad down toward them. As they drew closer, he spotted the two men they had conversed with earlier among them. However, the more interesting character was the one leading the retreat. In spite of the scraggly mess of hair that covered his head, his physique and bearing seemed very familiar. Almost like-- Kajan's eyes widened as the realization dawned on him. His face became contorted with rage, and he urged Arganek into a wild dive. "VERGANT!" Kajan roared as he fell from the sky like a thunderbolt. |

OOC: ... Ognus, I flippin' love you. AND SO IT BEGINS. :D :D :D --- "... OH SH*T." Was all Tookie said, forgetting he really shouldn't have known what was coming. While it was true he'd never seen a wyvern personally... this was Elibe. He'd played enough Fire Emblem to know this was going to hurt if they stuck around. "Vergant?" Van asked himself. "You mean, I've fallen in with..." Realisation dawned. Griez would've killed to see the look of anguish on Van's face. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-- I'll never get that reward at this rate! Knives he could handle. Loss of money, however, was a lot worse. Regardless, he joined the group he'd fought with in running like hell. Griez and Lachelle knew well enough that this spelled trouble, though the Langrasians only had Clark's order to tell them they were in trouble. Relus muttered an incantation under his breath as he clutched at a healing staff, making sure the worst of his wounds were healed before he joined the retreat. |

XEQ looks up at the sky as the wyverns fly over the battlefield and raises its bow towards them, as if preparing to shoot. But instead of being ordered to attack, Clark calls for the mercenaries to run away. Unable to ignore an order, the archer lowers its weapon and turns back toward Karaisali, marching as fast as it can, which means that it soon falls far behind the others. |

Maria Valine Dammit...! She clawed her way out of the ditch and knelt on the ground. The battlefield had grown still--war's chorus was in its death throes. That filled her with regret; although she never once lost her composure, her anger made her blind to the subtle hints of caution and discontent. They never pressed their advantage, for they had neither the morale or the ability. Their sole purpose was to complete the trap, and surround the leader of this band of mercenaries. It would be foolish to claim they were innocent, but little had been gained by killing them. So what did she accomplish? She slew two hapless knights and frightened a shaman, all of whom were not a real threat. It was a fine way to begin her assignment. Well, at least I didn't kill myself. That's always worse. She was often lauded for her skill in tactics and field assessment, so any sort of mistake hit her hard. She would try to shrug it off or justify her actions with logic, but in the end, she'd never forget. It was this self-destructive quality that allowed her to improve and succeed in her endeavors...she completed all her tasks perfectly, no matter how boring or asinine (and to her, the vast majority of them were just that). "Up we go..." As her strength returned she finished the self-reflection and stood upright. Scattered weapons and corpses, as her superior would say, a cesspool of sin and death. Funny. The Ankh never condemned war; templars were expected to kill for a living in years past. There were some simply not worthy of the divine gift of life, and it was a templar's duty to purify these dark souls. Haha...after all, to be slain by a templar was to have your soul purified and sent to the gods, so it was really an act of love and mercy...it was the only way they could sleep at night I guess. Thinking death can save someone. It was then she heard the coarse beat of wyvern wings. A flight of riders overhead was always an intimidating yet strangely beautiful sight. But something was wrong. Their arrival could have been a mere coincidence, but that would be luck this company obviously did not have. Clark's frantic cry only confirmed her worst fears. This day was far from over...but... Do I have a reason to follow them? If she simply left right now, the company of wyverns would pay her no mind and enact whatever vengeance they pleased. It was their presence that indirectly resulted in the burning of Karaisali, and she doubted how truly good or "innocent" the group was. Leaving and waiting for the result would be cold--cruel but wise. But, if only for a short time, she fought with them, and they had no doubt seen her, and if that wasn't enough... ...it's the easiest way. And maybe, just maybe, it'll be...fun. The mission came first. She dashed after them back to the village, preparing herself for battle once more. OOC: Making up for my lack of RPing here. Edited by Jmyster, Jan 31 2010, 09:27 PM.

Wyverns. What a turn of events... Weyler didn't have time to make sense of it, he simply turned and ran with the others. Virtually none of the events today made any sense - fire raining from the skies, small armies gathered on all sides of town, and a wyvern force that could very well be the Bern army itself. Hopefully Clark would be able to explain it all later...he sure hadn't hesitated to order everyone back. (OOC: unsure where to resume RPing with Gaddiel. Is he with the group at this point, or was he ordered to check somewhere else? I forgot :x ) |

Evelyn There was fire, fire everywhere. It just seemed to be falling from the sky endlessly, and yet it had finally stopped. Well that's some nice weather we're having here...not really. I get teleported to this town for a job and that would've been fine and all, there's just the problem of WHERE THE HELL IS THE TOWN AND WHAT HAPPENED HERE? What kind of power could have caused this, and why has it suddenly stopped? If it were say something impossible like dragons I doubt it would have stopped, but even as far as magic goes, this is a little...much. Better yet I can't see why the hell anyone who could master such a power would use it to destroy a town like this. Evelyn trekked towards what used to be the village entrance in dismay. There was hardly anything left, and there was not telling if any of the people even had time to evacuate. Looking out towards the surrounding area, she spotted what looked like the scene of a rather large battle, and a group running away from some odd creatures in the sky...wait it couldn't be...wyverns. Yet who was it that was leading the retreat from them? Well I'll be damned, that crazy mercenary has something to do with this. It sure has been awhile. Don't really like the look of those skies though. Still, if I want answers he'll probably have them. |

OOC: A little bit retro ROWAN Rowan wasn't much more than annoyed when those little fire blasts hit him. He then saw from the corner of his eye a young man running towards the woman he just attacked, and carried her off to safety. It didn't matter to him though, but before he could act, someone else gotten to his target and was nearly successful in taking him out. A few loud screeches later, Rowan wasn't even sure what was going on anymore. His vision started to become really blurry, and he was starting to loss his grasp on what exactly was going on around him. Before long all he could hear was the sounds of his own breath, and even that was quickly fading. Right now he felt like doing nothing more than going to sleep, and noticed someone approaching him just before his vision failed him completely and he passed out. JARRO "You big idiot, what were you thinking going off on your own little crusade like that." Jarro arrived at Rowan's location just as he passed out and quickly checked to see vital signs. He was still alive at least, but who knows for how long. With the fact that they needed to escape in a hurry did little in making the situation any better. However, he had no choice but to take Rowan back with him. He shifted Rowan around and got on his horse after moving Rowan, and kept him laying on his back, then ordered his horse to begin galloping back to town as fast as it could. Fortunately, Jarro had much experience handling horses and it he knew Rowan's horse in particular was a very well mannered beast, much unlike his rider, and while it wasn't particularly fussy about strangers, it didn't make it much easier. Fortunately, Jarro figured it wouldn't take him long to get back and hopefully get some help for Rowan, but unfortunately, he probably wouldn't be able to defend himself well like he was. Fortunately, the wyvern riders seemed particularly attracted to Clark, that fact compounded by how one began diving for him at an alarming rate. Jarro was probably going to get back more quickly than the others, given his speed, and he'll at least get some time to access the situation before making his next move. |

Clark reached into his pouch and pulled out a few of his vials, then tossed them into the air as Kajan and his men descended on them. They exploded in the space between the two groups, halting the soldiers and granting the mercenaries enough of a distraction to make their way into the burning town. The situation was far from ideal due to the thick smoke that blanketed Karaisali, but this same smoke would keep the soldiers from finding them as they fled through the twisting streets. Once everyone had made it into the town and Clark was certain that they were safe--if only momentarily--he addressed the group as a whole. "Everyone, meet at the Grand Sunset in five minutes! Grab what you need, but only if it won't weigh you down. There's no guarantee that we'll be able to come back here." Without another word, Clark left the group and ran straight to the armory, which he found in shambles. Luckily the main room was still standing, and it was there that he found Lamar, the man he was looking for. The short druid was sitting against Ralheim's counter panting heavily. His face was so white that his skin was almost transparent, and in his hand he clutched what looked like the hilt of a sword, but there was no blade coming out of it. "Ah, Clark," he said, looking up as Clark entered the ruined building, "just who I wanted to see. We finished it ahead of schedule." He held up the broken sword, which Clark noticed had a strange circular rune on in the middle. "What is this?" Clark asked, confused. "Your sword, of course," Lamar answered. "You gave me a magical poison, so in turn I gave you a magical sword. This might just be my finest work." He smiled and gazed at the hilt proudly. Reaching into his pocket, he produced a crumpled scrap of paper with a few short phrases scrawled hastily upon it. He handed it to Clark, who frowned when he read the words. "This isn't modern Elibian," Clark muttered. "It's the language of magic," Lamar replied. "Touch the rune on the hilt and utter the first phrase, and your blade will appear. Touch the rune and say the second, and it will vanish. Touch the rune and say the third..." Lamar trailed off ominously. "Yes?" Clark asked impatiently, his curiosity piqued. "You'll release the seal on the magic," Lamar said, "but I would advise against doing that. For starters, the energy that was put into the seal will flood into you, and it's more than enough to kill you. That's the only reason it took this long." Clark took a closer look at Lamar and saw signs of aging creeping along his face. His hair was flecked with gray patches, and the crow's feet around his eyes seemed to have cracked overnight. "The other problem is that you gave me the poison in a state that was mostly solidified," Lamar continued. "The blade itself uses a condensed vapor form of the magic. If you break the seal, it will expand over an enormous distance, and I think you've used that poison often enough to know what that means." Clark nodded silently. If the seal was broken, he and anyone near him would die very quickly and very painfully. What made matters worse was that he had no idea what kind of range the blade possessed; breaking the seal could be useful in special situations, but only if he could trick someone else into doing it. If he had to be extremely far away, though, even that scenario would be ruled out. Noticing that there was a small chain dangling from the pommel, Clark affixed it to his belt and headed back to the door. "Thanks, Lamar," he said over his shoulder. "Someday, I'll pay you back ten times over." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alexander looked back and forth between the people who were approaching him. Of the four, the two women appeared to be together while the two men were on the same side as well. Remembering his manners, Alexander approached the women first. "Thank you for your help," Alexander said warmly, bowing to both of them. "I am Alexander, the duke of Sydelle. To what do I owe the fortuitous aid you have granted me?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kajan swore profusely. Their armor was certainly coming in handy, but even with its enchantments it wouldn't protect them from the magic fields generated by whatever the hell Vergant had thrown at them. He pulled back on Arganek's reins and directed his men skyward once more. "Spread out and circle the town! If they try to leave, we'll have the upper hand!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OOC: Tookie, I'd like to RP something between Alonso and Barimos sometime soon, if possible. Gaddiel directed his wyvern toward Kajan, avoiding the dispersing soldiers who'd taken off to surround the ruin of a town. Something had Kajan furious, and Gaddiel knew what that could do to man's judgment. He'd been in similar situations himself. "Kajan, look. You had the right idea before with having someone keep an eye on him. We're not exactly hard to spot, the whole lot of us decked out in war gear riding these screeching beasts, bless their hearts. So it's important that we got the jump on him like this. I know he's close and you don't want to lose him, but we can't be spread too far out. I doubt this force is the size it is merely to cover more ground, Kajan. " |

NROOC: Me: Hey Seth, where did Osprey and his mercenaries go? It would make RPing Jael a bit easier if I knew. Also, I'm going to mess stuff up. XEQ is still crossing the battlefield when the wyverns pass overhead. It watches as a series of explosions stop them from catching Clark. The wyverns split up, forming a living wall around Karaisali that keeps the commander in and the archer out. But this also gives XEQ the opportunity it has been waiting for. The golem raises its bow, aiming for the wing of an olive colored wyvern whose rider seems to be conversing with the man next to him. Then it fires. (Yes, that's Gaddiel's wyvern.) |

OOC: Osprey and his men are in Karaisali helping citizens evacuate. The part that we've entered (and that we're usually in) is the commercial sector, but everyone is already out of there, so the enemies we just fought are in the residential sector, which is the northeast block of town. The Grand Sunset is in the southeast, and we'll be heading due east after that. |

Grand Sunset in five. Got it. I'll make it Grand Sunset right now if I can avoid those things. Even if he'd never seen the things through games and stories, Tookie would only have had to take one look at a bunch of guys on dragons in heavy armour to know that tangling with them was not high on his priority list. Actually, he remembered seeing the Grand Sunset the day before he got caught up in all of this, so it didn't take him too long to find it. Naturally, the Langrasians (also having nothing to gather) followed him, but Myke could've sworn he'd heard Emysia tell Relus that 'we will discuss this later'. Whatever it was, he didn't really want to know. --- While disappointed that he would likely never see this magical reward from the Bern Army now, Van figured that neither Griez or Lachelle would let him leave this group that easily... and from what he'd seen of them in action (despite him swearing that a few of them were half his age), he really didn't feel like taking them all on over money. Profits would mean nothing if he didn't live to enjoy them, after all, and even that odd looking kid in the white shirt looked like he could handle a few rounds. May just have been the bloodstains though. He followed this group to the Grand Sunset, with Griez and Lachelle arriving there shortly after. Edited by Tookie, Feb 4 2010, 03:29 PM.

Emerging from the shadows nearby, Streak caught sight of a few people he'd recognized as part of Clark's group, and joined up with them. His face was blackened by the smoke and the soot, almost to the point of matching his hair and his clothes. Addressing the one in front, the kid in the unusual clothes, he spoke up. "Hey, you have any idea what caused all this? I was just killing some time in town when all of a sudden the whole damn place goes up in flames! Been helping people evacuate ever since - and now there's a force of Wyevrn Riders surrounding the town, what the hell's going on around here?!" ((OOC: Short, sloppy re-intro of Streak. Tookie turned around; it was that... Streak, was it? Guy he'd welcomed with an axe in hand. "Psycho group of mercenaries torched town to get Clark- by extension, us- out in the open over I-don't-know-what, and I can't be too sure, but I think the Wyverns might be after him as well. He was pretty determined to have us all haul ass out of there, but that could've just been the general idea of trying to take on those things." It's certainly possible, Myke thought to himself, he looked like he'd been dreading seeing those things again before he told us all to get out of there... He kept quiet, though. They had enough to worry about already. --- OOC: Okay, I'm just being particulary dumb today. >_> EDIT: I realise that this would be an excellent point for Griez to also put two and two together and spoil it for my other characters, but there's a couple of bits I want to deal with first. Gaddiel's mount let out a shrill cry, a jet of blood spurting from one of its wings. The flow of blood slowed to a trickle soon after, but the wing was damaged regardless. Gaddiel scarcely had time to register the cry before the wyvern nearly bucked him off. He held tight to the reigns, heart pounding as he looked Baruch over to assess the damage. One wing was clearly compensating for the deficiency of the other. He ground his teeth, scolding himself for leaving himself out in the open. He'd been out of service too long. "What - ! Damn it all, Kajan, I'm going to have to land. I've got to see what I can do about this damned arrow in Baruch's wing. Keep what I've said in mind! Spreading ourselves to thin is just asking for casualties-" He directed the wyvern down to the ruins of the square, looking for a suitable landing point. He spotted a large building with its roof missing, what might've been a tavern just a short time ago, and brought the beast down to the earth. The stone walls reached high enough to hide the two of them from sight, and the surroundings offered relatively close quarters. Keeping his lance under one arm, Gaddiel dismounted and began treating the wyvern. |

(OOC: I DID NOT INTEND TO DROP OFF THE FACE OF THE WORLD. As such, this post will have eeeeeverything she's done in a short and concise manner. Maybe.) Serena 'D-Dammit, he's so far away!' Serena thought to herself as she tried to catch up with Clark, stopping only briefly to catch her breath. The Delphinus was clutched loosely in her hand, the sharp blade clean of blood or anything that would really mark it in a battle. She was getting frustrated at what looked like a lack of progress. She'd continue running and everyone else would keep fighting around her and there was not a damn thing she could do about it. But at least it looked like Clark was winning. It was still too far away, but Clark had that axeman pressed against the wall and- "What the hell?!" "Bastard!" She shouted at the man who had thrown the knife, her anger providing her with a second wind. It didn't last long, however, as Clark shouted a warning. She skidded to a halt, blinking as heard the flapping of wyvern wings over the din. She wasn't going to complain, she was getting out of here. She had fought one of the beasts before...well, more like fought one of its riders. It hadn't been fun. She had broken several ribs and one of her legs after that... She shivered a little as she sped back full sprint back to Karaisali. Bad memories. She heard an explosion behind her as she ran and turned back to see clouds of black smoke beginning to envelop the approaching riders. She arrived in town, bent on her knees and panting as she waited for Clark to arrive. And then came the announcement that they were going to meet up somewhere...the Grand Sunset? It was kind of hard to hear over the fire, the wyvern's shrieks, and the villagers. 'Five minutes?' Before she could ask to make sure where the Grand Sunset was, Clark was off again on his own. "H-Hey, you should fix that wound!" Serena yelled after him before running to the guild hall to grab her things. It wasn't a lot. Nothing that couldn't be shoved in a small traveler's sack. Her gold, a couple of mementos she had of her journeys, the blanket she had when she was a child, and some extra sets of clothes. "There, all done!" She said proudly to herself as she left the hall, the sack slung over her shoulder. She looked up at the wyverns that were beginning to circle the village...none of them actually seemed to be attacking any of the villagers. More like just...waiting for someone? Watching? It was none of her business. She just wanted them gone. She ran off towards Grand Sunset, her sword drawn...just in case. |

Evelyn "Everyone, meet at the Grand Sunset in five minutes! Grab what you need, but only if it won't weigh you down. There's no guarantee that we'll be able to come back here." Evelyn was now more curious than ever as to what could have happened to the old band of mercenaries and this town, and simply decided that the best way to get answers was to sneak in with the group and figure it out from there. Yes, it would probably be a good thing if he explains anything seeing as I don't think anyone will believe me for awhile if I say the town is practically gone and I don feel like winding up in a cell until they can verify it. At least I came prepared for that last job...hope everything holds out though as this is clearly more complicated... |

Jael leans against a mostly-standing home and watches the golems dragging dead bodies out of the ruined buildings with her hand over her mouth. For now, they're helping, and nobody has had time to think about what they are. But any moment now, somebody will catch on. At least they haven't done anything wrong. Maybe- The sky is full of wyverns. She stands up straight, looking up at the wheeling beasts. Suddenly one of them passes low overhead, flying clumsily. A drop of a dark substance falls and hits the wall next to her, dripping down. Jael looks closer. Blood. I don't know if it's from the wyvern, or the rider, but it's blood. I need to get out of Karaisali. Nothing good happens here. Meanwhile, XEQ passes into the town, not having been seen by the wyvern riders. Perhaps this is because it is made of dirt and standing on dirt. Or maybe they just aren't looking for a walking mudpie with a bow. Whatever the case may be, the archer is allowed to continue southward. Oddly, the people of Karaisali just look at it without any reaction. If XEQ understood emotions, it would know that those blank expressions mean that the people of Karaisali are still in shock. |

JARRO Jarro got to the village ahead of everyone else, just as expected. He took Rowan and laid his across the ground, then removed his armor to check on him. His wounds were certainly serious, but not quite life threatening, thankfully. Most of the damage had been done by the fire blast, and Rowan suffered some burns. Jarro guessed that his armor actually took most of the damage, but Rowan was probably going to need to find a new suit with the damage it was in. When Jarro was done checking up on him, he found the rest of the mercenaries have arrived. After Clark addressed them, Jarro nodded in agreement. Jarro figured Rowan would be safest back in the village, until he regained consciousness, so he led the horse to a secluded area that had not been hit, which was easier said then done. He then rushed over to the Grand Sunset where everyone else had been waiting. FAIRAH Fairah listened to the Duke as he spoke and when he got back up, Fairah bowed herself, "It is an honour, Duke Alexander of Sydelle. My name is Fairah Vyers of Augustria and this is Frost. We were simply in the area investigating the recent uprisings when we caught word of the attack and thought it would be best to offer assistance." She glanced over the two men that had joined them. OOC: Bah, really crappy but to hell with it. |

They're after someone in this group, alright... Griez thought to himself, especially since the one shouting for Vergant sounded like the one that Van and I saw... well, Clark and Van have been described as similar enough, so it's pretty likely... Emysia paled when she heard that. First, Relus' mentions of Golgoth, and now they'd ended up in this mess? "Whatever horrific thought you just heard," Tookie said instinctively, "I swear it was not me." "Unless you have something you should really share now," Emysia replied... "You don't, do you?" "Well, I'm convinced this damn emblemy thing is bad news," Tookie said, pointing at the emblem Lucialde had pinned on him- which still displayed no signs of coming off- "but I'd say it's a bit less important than those things." At this, he pointed up at the wyverns. "I mean, it's not like it's done me any harm so far." "Those wyverns haven't done you any harm so far," Griez countered. "... True," Tookie conceded, "so far. That's probably about to change, though." --- OOC: whee padding |

"There was another one in Auncet recently," Recens added, seeing his opportunity to join the conversation, "but I hadn't heard of any others occurring." "That's very troubling news," Alexander remarked, furrowing his brow. He turned to face Fairah. "Miss Vyers, do you know of any other areas suffering political strife?" OOC: Soul, feel free to make up stuff if you'd like. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before returning to the Grand Sunset, Clark rushed into the apothecary one last time. His sudden arrival spooked Sam, who had been hiding behind the counter. "Got anything flammable?" Clark said. "The more reactive, the better." "Wh-where's Hodge?" Sam asked nervously. "He's resting at the armory. Now do you have anything?" Sam rummaged around behind the counter and produced a jar of black powder. "This is all we've got right now." "I'll take it," Clark said, swiping it and dropping a heavy bag of gold in its place. "Keep the change." Clark tucked the jar away in his pouch and took off for the Grand Sunset, wanting to leave Karaisali as soon as possible. He hoped the other mercenaries had made it there safely. As he ran, he ran through his plan in his mind once more, sorting through the details carefully. As long as we've got XEQ, we'll survive. OOC: Goatfish, I'll RP with Kajan sometime later. =/ |

FAIRAH Fairah shook her head when Alexander asked the question, "Not to my knowledge no, and as far as we're aware, the one at Auncet and here are unrelated, though the timing for both is a little strange. We're uncertain who triggered the rebellion at Auncet, we don't even have a solid lead. We do believe that Ruve was partly responsible for the one set up here, though we're uncertain to what extent and we don't have any solid proof. But the fact that Ruve seemed to have an eye for Sydelle, coupled with the attack here justifies our suspicion." Fairah paused a little, unsure if now was the time for the next information, but she figured it had to be done sooner or later. "And... it gets worse. We also just learned during the battle, due to a blunder in part of the enemy commander, that... Ruve has made allies in the Bern army." |

Alexander and Recens both froze, though for very different reasons. Alexander ran through the list of options in his mind, but he knew that it boiled down to only a small handful. They could sit still and wait for Ruve to come to them, at which point they could surrender...though the events that had transpired that day would easily damn them to execution. They could attempt to defend themselves, but Ruve alone would be a challenge, and it would seem that he has the backing of a military superpower. There was a third option up for consideration, but Alexander needed to test the waters before taking a plunge. He walked over to Dalton, who was currently tied up and barely conscious. "You--Dalton, was it?--why has Bern formed an alliance with Ruve?" The swift loss of blood followed by very quick healing had left Dalton in something similar to a drunken stupor, and he had no problem answering Alexander. "Because the duke's got himself some big plans, he does!" The formal and dignified tone he had used previously was gone as well. "What kind of plans?" Alexander inquired. "Hell if I know," Dalton said, snickering, "but once they get here, he's gonna roll through this town like a wildfire in a prairie! Hahahahnnngh--" Dalton struggled against his bonds, trying to reach his chest. Alice smacked him in the back of the head and quickly applied her heal staff to his chest once more. "Must've missed something on the first go-around," Alice muttered as his spasms ceased. Alexander knelt down to Dalton's level and looked him directly in the eyes. "All I need to know is whether or not they're there yet. Have they arrived?" Dalton sneered at Alexander. "Not yet, the slow bastards. I thought that b*tch over there might be one of 'em," he said, tilting his head in Ruby's direction, "but I guess you can't always be right, y'know? It's like life's a game, and--" Dalton's eyelids drooped and he went limp as Cobalt applied pressure to the base of his neck. Cobalt looked up at Alexander and grinned. "I think I know what you have in mind, milord," he said slyly, "but would you care to announce it to all of us?" Alexander nodded. The third option was their only hope now, and if it didn't pan out...well, it was no worse than sitting around waiting to be killed, right? "Everyone," Alexander said more loudly, a tinge of anxiety and excitement creeping into his voice, "what we've done today warrants death if we are taken over by Ruve. If we resist, he will lay siege to this town, and we won't last long against a horde of wyverns. That leaves one course of action: we march on Ruve." |

Clark stopped by several other ruined shops along the way, picking his way through the wreckage until he found a length of twine long enough for his purposes. Satisfied, he wasted no more time in getting to the Grand Sunset. He had taken seven minutes, much to his chagrin, but luckily everyone else had already arrived. "Alright, here's the plan," Clark said in a low, urgent tone. "We're going to cut through the residential sector of town and do our best to blend in with the villagers running around over there. When we reach the edge of town, I want every last one of you to run like hell until you reach the forest to the east. It isn't that far, and you'll be safe once you get there. XEQ, you'll march at the back of the group and provide covering fire." Clark reached into his pouch and pulled out a pair of vials. "I'll toss a few of these if any of 'em get too close," he said, twiddling the vials idly. He stood up and began to lead the mercenaries to the east side of town. "These guys are tough, but they're only after me. If things turn ugly, get as far away from me as you can," Clark instructed, his voice deadly serious. "There's a little village on the other side of the woods. Some of you might remember it; it's where we had our first job." Clark smiled grimly as he thought back to that mission. It had been only a short while ago, but already it seemed like ages had passed since then. "If we get separated, we'll rendezvous where the forest meets the village." The group made their way to the point where the town was divided into a commercial sector and a residential sector. As they crossed over, however, they could clearly see that Jane had made no such distinction; the streets on this side of town were just as badly ravaged as on the other side, and the air was thick with rising smoke and the cries of the wounded. Clark drew his sword silently as they passed through the decimated town. Every so often he would cast a glance skyward, as if expecting Kajan and his men to descend upon them at any moment. He grimaced at the thought of fleeing wyvern riders over open terrain. XEQ's the only reason this has any hope of working, he thought to himself. Let's hope this doesn't all go to hell. "If we survive this," Clark said, his eyes staring straight ahead, "I'll explain what's going on. That's still a pretty big 'if,' though, so don't get your hopes up." |

XEQ meets up with the rest of the group as Clark arrives to give his orders. The archer nods at his words. It always takes the rear regardless. The only challenge here might be blending in with the villagers. Few of them are seven feet tall and made of dirt. Except, as it looks around, it sees the golems accompanying the young woman who didn't die. So XEQ isn't the only non-human entity walking around in the ruins of Karaisali. That might be enough. The golem itself does not contemplate failure. Instead, it watches the wyverns overhead, eager to knock some more down. |

Serena The swordswoman had been the first to arrive at the Grand Sunset, tapping her foot impatiently and hopping from side to side as she waited for the other mercenaries to arrive. She greeted them all with a silent wave and a nod, the normally cheerful girl not really in the mood for pleasantries. She did smile when Clark finally joined them, but before she could say anything he had already started outlining a plan. It...was an okay plan, she supposed. Rushed and reckless, definitely, but then judging the circumstances... 'I mean...blend in with the villagers? Us?' She looked at the other and shrugged. The wyvern riders were pretty high up in the sky. Maybe all the smoke would blind them or at least hamper their vision enough for them to seem like normal people. Either way, she didn't voice an objection and followed Clark, clutching the hilt of her sword tightly. "If we survive this," Clark said, his eyes staring straight ahead, "I'll explain what's going on. That's still a pretty big 'if,' though, so don't get your hopes up." Serena couldn't help but snicker, her stride breaking just for a moment as she tripped over a jutting piece of stone. She smirked, shaking her head at Clark. "If we survive? Chief, I think we've outlasted things a lot worse that this lizard pack that's chasing us. If you think something like this is going to stop us, you think less of us that you really should~" |

Streak listened as Clark explained the plan. Despite a few qualms he had with Clark (namely keeping that damned golem around), he had to admit, he was really placing priority on keeping his people safe, even at his own expense, and that was definitely worthy of respect. He hadn't been around for their first mission, obviously, but he knew the local regions well enough that he knew the village, so he knew where Clark meant. Taking another look up toward the Wyvern forces, he considered the situation. Alright, I'll give you this much, Clark - that golem does make our chances here a lot better. I'd be able to put up a half-decent fight, but those things aren't the sort of enemies I'd like to be staring down... Blending in with the villagers wouldn't be TOO much of a problem, Streak made a habit of it all the time. That and he probably wasn't too heavily associated with Clark yet - he'd fought in precisely one battle with him that hadn't been a training exercise, and he hadn't been out on the field for this most recent one, when they had arrived, but rather helping villagers escape the flames. So until they made a break for it, Streak was likely to relatively safe. Still, Clark seemed absolutely panicked about the whole situation, or about as panicked as he ever seemed to get. Considering what he'd been told of what they'd just dealt with, this seemed to pale in comparison, leading Streak to believe that there was definitely more to this than he was saying at the moment. Why were they only after him? Well, questions like that would have to wait until the ordeal was over. He'd said he would explain anyway, so Streak was left to simply go with the flow until then. He'd confront him about XEQ's overly murderous ways once things had calmed down a bit. Edited by Blaze the Sage, Feb 24 2010, 04:29 PM.

"We march on Ruve." That was all the four travellers heard. The two men realised then that it was Ruve's troops that had been fleeing, which really just gave more questions; mainly questioning the point of starting a civil war. But then, the ruling classes were the ruling classes; all mercenaries such as themselves had to do was shut up and get on with what they were being paid to do. Still, best to just sit and see how this went over with the people the noble was addressing before anyone did anything stupid. --- Blending in was not something that would be easy for Tookie. Or any of them, from what he could see. Oh well. Hopefully the wyverns couldn't see what a colourful little bunch they were. And hopefully I'm capable of not dying if I end up having to fight any of them. Which I will, because that's just how my life works. --- OOC: SHORT AND CRAP AND I AM NOT DEAD >_> |

FAIRAH Fairah was busy contemplating the next move. Surely attacking Ruve couldn't be the only possible solution, but if they sat and waited, they'd surely be overrun. Fairah did intend to get word back to Augustria, but there likely wouldn't be enough time for them to respond, if they even did that. Still, Ruve making allies with Bern made things extremely complicated. After a moment, Fairah realized that there was no turning back now. She turned to Frost, "I suppose we'll fight with Sydelle. If there's a chance we can end this at Ruve, then I suppose there's no other choice here." Frost nodded in silent agreement, thinking the exact same thing. JARRO Jarro nodded as he listened to the plan. It was sensible, get away from the wyvern horde with as few casualties as possible. He couldn't leave the group now, he had his orders, but this development could complicate matters. Either way, he'd have to work through it. OOC: Bleh |

Maria Valine Once she was clear of the battlefield, Maria distanced herself from the rest of the brigade and searched the ruins of the town. This time there was a lack of death and suffering. A sickening sight, and a pleasing scent. Nothing had been spared from the flames--all that remained was that intoxicating stench. It was disgusting before, but without all the flaming carcasses it's...invigorating. I can think clearly. There's no time for pity...something...maybe there's something here I can use. She had no qualms with procuring items scattered throughout the residential and market area; the mission had grown extremely dangerous, and if the town still had something to offer, she would take it. Few things were salvageable however, most being mere trinkets. Money was the last thing on her mind. Wait, that merchant was around here... Maria ripped off the rubble and brushed the ground with her gloved hand. Her hand grazed metal, and she pulled out what was once an expensive dagger. The blade was fairly long; the sheath was cracked, but still usable. It was probably meant to be more of an ornamental piece, but it could maim well enough. Nearby, there was a bag of personal belongings that had been spared by the flames. Most of it was useless, but one vial was still intact--an elixir. The substance was almost depleted, but what was left remained unspoiled. After she put it away, Maria casually slipped into the Sunset Inn. Clark unveiled his plan immediately, and swore to divulge the personal details should he and the rest of the mercenaries survive. The situation grew more and more unsettling. More problems...and I haven't even gotten a word in with him. I'll need to keep him alive though, if only to get my answers and report this to my superiors. If we had a moment to breathe, I'd be able to keep records but... When the group moved out, Maria kept her distance from the main group, and melded with the crowd with little effort. To a passerby she looked perfectly tranquil, but a maelstrom of adrenaline was building up inside her. Wyverns didn't intimidate her, and THIS time, she'd have a part to play in the battle's outcome. OOC: For future battle purposes, Maria acquired a 15 use slim sword and 1/3 elixir. Edited by Jmyster, Mar 1 2010, 12:00 AM.

Clark found no comfort in Serena's words. He knew she was trying to lighten the mood, but the one thing had happened that Clark had been fearing the most, and he would not for even a fraction of a second allow his mind to lose its focus. The mercenaries shuffled along through the back-alleys of Karaisali as quickly as they could. Unfortunately, the narrow streets, which were cramped under normal conditions, were now flooded with the survivors from the catastrophe in the market sector, making their progress sluggish at best. Worse yet, the smoke cover over their heads was beginning to thin out, and Clark could make out the dark shapes that flitted back and forth behind the black veil. Finally, though, the group made it to the edge of town. Smoke was still rising in wispy trails over the ruined village, and a small cloud of it branched out beyond the edge of town, but past that there was nothing to hide them until they reached the forest's edge. It wasn't very far away, but the mercenaries were at a disadvantage. Even if they did make it to the woods, Clark knew it would only impede the soldiers slightly; they wouldn't be able to pursue them with their wyverns, but they could dismount and follow them through the forest, or keep constant surveillance from above the trees. We won't be able to survive if that happens, Clark though, a deep scowl crossing his features. That's why this has to work! "Everyone," Clark said, not looking back over his shoulder, "this is it. Take a few deep breaths, then run like you've never run before." Clark stepped to the side to allow the others out ahead of him. He would take the rear with XEQ; that was their best chance of survival, after all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Eh?! Fight Ruve?!" One of the peasants who had joined the fight on Sydelle's side had overheard Alexander's proclamation, and he was visibly panicked. "Yer kiddin', right? How yeh gonna pull that off?" Alexander turned to address the man. "We'll gather what's left of the castle guard and set out this afternoon. They won't be expecting a counterattack so soon. We've got to hope their reinforcements haven't arrived yet...as long as they haven't, there's hope." "There's a reason for that," Cobalt interjected. "While I do support your plan, milord, most of the guards--not to mention the able-bodied villagers--were severely injured in that little revolt yesterday." Cobalt began pacing in slow circles. "Furthermore, there were survivors from this fight. They'll reach Ruve before we do...I don't think there's much hope for having the element of surprise." "Then think again, good sir!" Both Cobalt and Alexander were caught by surprise at this new, cheerful tone. From the west came a moderately large contingent of soldiers led by a man in worn battle armor. From the looks of their weapons, they had just finished fighting someone. "Of course, that's assuming the survivors were that ragged bunch we just took out on the way over here," he said with a wicked grin. "And as for an army...you've got the soldiers of Gast behind you!" Alexander's jaw dropped. Recens was also taken by surprise, and he walked back over to Brannan, where he spoke in a hushed tone. "Isn't Gast the name of the noble that hired us?" he whispered. "Well," the mysterious soldier continued, not noticing Recens, "I suppose they aren't the finest we have to offer...just had 'em whipped into shape the other day, as a matter of fact. But fear not! After all, they will be led into battle by Gast's finest general, yours truly!" "Er...and who might you be?" Alexander asked, still taken aback. The soldier got on one knee and bowed his head to Alexander. His men immediately followed suit. "General Harmon Liucharde at your service, Your Grace." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Wh...what's the damage, Ognus?" Byron groaned as he staggered into the barracks. "It's quite severe," Ognus replied sullenly. "The town's a wreck, Jane's in terrible shape, and the other mercenaries are out for blood. It's a good thing they're badly injured, or we'd have a real problem on our hands." Like we don't already, Byron thought. "Where is Jane now, anyway?" he asked. "Hm? I'd assume upstairs," Ognus said. "Lou took her after the fight. I'm sure he's treating her wounds. Speaking of which..." Ognus ducked under the stairs and rummaged around for a few moments before returning with a pair of vulneraries. "Drink up," he told Byron, tossing him both. Byron sipped at the liquid slowly, making a face at the unpleasant taste. Once the contents of the first were drained, he uncorked the second, looked at it for a moment, and placed it on the floor for later. "Ognus," he muttered, his head in his hands, "where do we go from here?" "That's a good question, boss." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jane, please hold on! Hoofbeats thundered across the plains and Lou rode north like a madman. He had propped Jane up in the saddle behind him and bound her in such a way that she would not fall, but he still glanced over his shoulder at her every few moments. They were moving very fast, and if she were to fall...Lou pushed the thought away. If they didn't hurry to Alice, Jane would die anyway. Please...don't let it happen... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OOC: In case you're wondering, that's the same Harmon from just before the training exercise...and those are the same soldiers from the training exercise. Well, some of them. There are a bunch of others who came along as well. So yes! On the Kallen front...run! That's...well, pretty much it...as for the Fury front, feel free to pretty much do whatever. Things are about to get a lot crazier on both fronts. |

Okay, run like buggery... I think I can do that. I'd better be able to do that. Tookie didn't need to be told twice to run. One quick breath was all he gave himself, praying to whichever deity had landed him in this that he'd get to this alleged forest safely. He could hear some of the others behind him, but they weren't particularly important to him right now. He'd seen a couple of people that he didn't really recognise (and one extra person he did recognise, what the bloody hell was that Relus guy doing here? But that was a question for later.), but he figured that Clark would've said something if there was a huge problem. --- Standing around and watching the situation unfold, Reynald gathered his thoughts. On one hand, a civil war between Etrurian nobles would be bad. On the other hand, there was clearly little choice here- either Sydelle marched, or Ruve sent more soldiers. This was a hideous choice, and marching on Ruve was the best option for Sydelle. Now, how best to enlist in this little crusade... Four mercenaries aren't really something to be considered immediately, especially... well, us. Two men (one of whom seemed only to fight with their fists), and two young girls were not the most seemly group of fighters. If the others- even just Van or Griez- were here, maybe they could worm their way in. But the Bladier Remnants were after all only remnants of a much greater group, and it was doubtful that the name Reynald Belich held much weight, if any. --- Time was running out. Hrathli knew it, the king knew it, everyone knew it. It was no real secret to the remaining people of Langras that the Graael Order had some very horrific plans ahead, though only Hrathli and the king he guarded knew the truth of the matter. As much as both men hated to admit it, the only chance of salvation lay in this strange new world the Graael Order themselves had found. Relus was tracking down the people he trusted there, and Barimos... well, it was time to see if Relus had told Barimos anything. Clutching at his talisman, he rather hoped he wasn't interrupting anything too important. Barimos, he thought, telling the talisman who he wished to speak to, Barimos Esine! --- The man called Barimos Esine was equally worried, though not quite for the same reasons as Hrathli. Foreign aid was a possibility, but only the most naive fools would dare to hope that altruism would play a part in the decision; a steep price would be paid in some form. It was then that he felt the familiar chilling sensation of his talisman, the piece that signified him as a man very important to Langras. Hrathli?, he asked as he clasped at the symbol, what do you have to tell me? I have some grave news. Whether you share this now is at your discretion, but it is very important that you keep it in mind. Very well, what would you have me hear. It's about the Graael Order's plans. The man behind their recent movements plans to resurrect Golgoth. Golgoth? Barimos tensed at this- surely an even higher price would be expected for any aid now, if these people had the faintest idea of what exactly Golgoth was. This... are you sure? Not even the Graael Order would-- Make no mistake, Barimos, this is not the work of the Graael Order. Then, who could possibly consider raising that monstrosity? A man by the name of Lucialde, who appeared only recently and seems to have taken a large role in the Order's recent plans. However, it is he alone who wishes to see Golgoth returned- Relus assures me of that much. Relus? Can we be sure of Relus? He has long been in the service of the Order, after all. Relus may serve ther Order on the surface, but deep down he's as loyal to Langras- a free Langras- as you or I. However, he should be back in Elibe by now to assist those others of our world that were already there. You seem very sure of this. Who can we possibly consider a true ally here? Mikalas Ienthi, for one. Relus assures me that two others from Langras are currently in Elibe, along with another proven ally. Mikalas... as pleased as I am to note that Adumas' son still lives, I hardly believe that he is any substitute for his father. He will have to suffice, Barimos. You of all people should realise how little we have to work with here. Little!? We could not even reseal Golgoth in his first waking moments with what we have right now! You should realise that Elibe is our only hope! Then our only hope is a dim one. What comes after Golgoth may be even worse for us. For the King; he would not accept the position Langras would be in, with such debts to Elibe. For the people; they will be at the mercy of Elibe. For us; our lives would be forfeit. No, to believe that Langras cannot possibly resolve this itself is to condemn us all. ... What can I do but condemn us? We are broken already; the Order has seen to that over the years. Adumas Ienthi is lost to us, with Sonorious sealed away. Mikalas- even if he had the sacred blade of oaths in hand- is no substitute for Adumas. We cannot count on the gods for miracles. For Langras, there is very little hope. Barimos, you... ... Forgive me, Hrathli. I must return to my hosts now. That was a lie; Barimos didn't have to return quite yet, but he did need to gather his thoughts. Golgoth... anyone with the power to withstand or even repel Golgoth would demand a high price for their help, even with the idea that if Langras fell (and it would), Elibe would be next. The end of Langras was drawing near, one way or another, and there was little Barimos could do about it. No matter what they survived as, Langras' best hope for survival lay in Bern's hands. --- OOC: So much faith these people have. |

Streak lowered himself to all fours as he prepared to break into a sprint. Running - now there was something he was good at. With the speed he could move through the forests, a straight dash through an open plain toward said forest would prove child's play. Still, the question was, could he outrun the wyverns' airspeed if and when they noticed him? Now was the time to find out... Streak's eyes darted between the plains ahead, those around him preparing to begin their dash, and the wyverns above. Wait for the right moment... Eyes still flicking to the air above and back to the others around him, he waited until it looked as though as many as he could hope for wouldn't notice them immediately. Seeing one or two of the others darting out from their hiding spots, Streak's instincts screamed for him to get moving, and he took off as if propelled by an explosion, aiming to vanish into the treetops as soon as he reached them. I get that far, and these overgrown iguanas'll never touch me... |

JARRO Jarro heard the order to begin the plan. He choose to wait until a few others began running before he started running himself. (OOC: *fleefleeflee*) FAIRAH Well this was a welcome surprise. Fairah had not expected anyone to act so quickly, but apparently Gast was ready to send the fight to Ruve as well. Sydelle had a chance now, even if Bern reinforcements had arrived at Ruve. However, there was something that didn't quite make sense. If Gast was ready to fight, why wasn't Clark or any of his cohorts here as well? It didn't make sense that Gast wouldn't have hired him again if she was ready to fight herself. She didn't have time to think about it too much though, as there was probably an extenuating circumstance behind it. She turned to Frost, "I'm going to send a message back to Augustria now. Hopefully, they'll be able to provide us with reinforcements." Frost nodded while Fairah began to head back for town. She reached the vacant building she was occupying and quickly scribbled a message. Then she cast the spell and the note was instantly off, now being carried by a magical dove. She then quickly made her way back. (OOC: Yay, magical message birds!) |

Everyone had begun running toward the forest as quickly as possible. Clark waited until the entire group had left and began running behind them, with XEQ taking the rear. Clark's grip on his vials tensed slightly as he moved out into the vulnerable openness of the plains between Karaisali and their destination. He knew that they would be spotted any moment now, and at that point...well, they had to hope for the best. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up in the skies above Karaisali, Jason was about to make another pass toward the center of town when something moving east caught his eye. Sure enough, Vergant and his men were making a break for it. He grinned maliciously; he could alert Kajan, but that would take precious seconds that could be spent snatching their prey for himself. He smirked as he imagined the look on Kajan's face when he, Jason DuGrine, received all of the credit and accolades for capturing the fugitive soldier. His mind made up, Jason urged his wyvern onward toward the mercenaries, gaining ground on them quickly. Kajan did not notice him until he was already a good distance away from Karaisali, at which point he yelled for all of his men to follow Jason. That bastard...I should've known he wouldn't cooperate, Kajan thought to himself. Gaddiel had been right; spreading their forces too thin had been their downfall, and with Jason's foolhardy actions, there was no guarantee that they would catch their target before he escaped. OOC: I'll conclude this tomorrow most likely, but I'd like to refrain from moving the Fury route forward until after Goatfish posts. |

Clark frantically looked over his shoulder at the rapidly approaching wyvern riders. Half of the group had already made it to the forest, but Clark could tell that the other half would be cutting it close. As he closed the gap between his position and the boundary of safety, he turned around and began running backwards, taking aim at the skies before hurling several vials at their pursuers. The small explosions deterred the riders, but only momentarily. It was long enough for the rest of the mercenaries to escape into the forest, except for XEQ. He had been through worse and survived without a scratch, though, so Clark took one final look back at the dirt golem and disappeared into the trees with his comrades. He found everyone waiting for him a short distance in. Most of them were catching their breath, but Clark noticed Streak didn't show any signs of fatigue. Impressive, he thought to himself. "Alright, everyone," Clark said loud enough for them all to hear, "we're safe momentarily, but we've got to keep moving. For now, we'll walk at a brisk pace so that no one tires out before we get to our destination. "As I promised, I'll explain what's going on." Clark moved toward the front of the group before continuing. "If you were to ask Melanie who I am, she'd tell you that I am Clark Kallen, the third son of a Lycian magistrate with no inheritance who took up mercenary work in Etruria to make ends meet. All of that is a lie." Clark glanced over his shoulder at them as he told his story. He doubted any of them were really surprised by this; anyone with half a brain could figure out something was amiss the moment those soldiers arrived in Karaisali. "My name is Isaac Vergant, former duke of the territory of Vergant in Bern. Until recently, I was a lieutenant in Bern's army. Unfortunately, I wasn't very well-liked by my superiors, and when I stumbled across some dirty business going on under the nose of the king, I was used as a scapegoat and sentenced to an unfair trial. I fled the country before they could take me, and I was branded a deserter of the army and a traitor to my country. Those soldiers were likely sent to silence me." Clark paused for a moment to let everything sink in. He knew what he was saying sounded a bit too far-fetched to be believed, but at this point he had nothing to lose if they didn't take his word for it. "Anyway, we can't stay in these woods forever, and they'll be waiting for us to come out. I have a plan to get them off our tail, but I need someone who can read the labels on these--" Clark held out one of his vials, "--and I need you all to trust me." OOC: There we go. Sorry for the delay on this one. Fury route will be up when I come up with something; I know what we'll be doing next, but I need to figure out the transition. |

Charge!

Serena Serena was already within the forest when she heard several explosions behind her and she suddenly spun, skidding on her heels as she tried to see what was going on. Clark was throwing more of those strange vials at the wyvern riders again or something, but she couldn't really see if it had any affect. The others looked like they were slowing down as well so she found a tree to lean against, closing her eyes and folding her arms as she tried to regain her breath. Clark arrived moments later and a curved smile appeared on Serena's lips. Nothing would be able to take him down. Even now he was still taking charge, starting with an explanation as to why...well everything was happening to them at the moment. She remained passive when he revealed that he wasn't actually Clark Kallen and his background was a total lie. A little surprising, but not that much. What Bern soldiers wanted with Lycian nobles was none of her business really, although there were times in the past... She snapped out of it and continued to listen, a whistle escaping her lips when she found out who he actually was. A Bern lieutenant? Now that was something. The militaristic country had a lot of pride in its commanders and to see one so easily disgraced was rather...distressing. Interesting, though. Definitely interesting. There were a lot more secrets revolving around this...Isaac than she first thought. She was sure he'd fill them in more if they ever decided to ask. "Well, you got my support, chief!" Serena spoke out. "I've followed you for...quite a long time, actually. Or at least long by my standards, and you haven't led us astray yet. Doesn't matter if you're a Bern lieutenant or anything, I'm sure we'll be able to get rid of anyone who wants to mess up your life. Still uh...Chief, you want us to call you Clark or Isaac from now on?" "Oh right and um...about those vials..." She smiles sheepishly. "I'm not a really good reader so...ask someone else." Bern officials not playing by the rules. Why am I not surprised? Streak had taken a perch lounging up in the branches while Clark, or rather, Isaac explained it all. "So, that's why you kept the golem around - you were waiting for Bern's Wyvern Riders to hunt you down." Streak grabbed the large knife out of the sheath in his boot and started flipping it around in his hand. "If nothing else, it's certainly never boring around you guys - more than I can say for what I was doing before, which is to say not much. My personal feelings about the archer golem aside, I'll stick with you. Those labels written in any kind of special language, or just plain Common?" Edited by Blaze the Sage, Mar 22 2010, 03:30 AM.

XEQ watches as the other mercenaries escape into the forest and does its best to follow them. It does not fear the wyvern riders and they do not seem to be in any hurry to attack the archer either. Eventually XEQ reaches the clearing where the others have gathered. They all seem to be standing around doing nothing and breathing heavily. As golems do not breathe, it does not know why they must take such breaks. It marches up to Clark to await further instructions. Meanwhile, Jael has made a difficult decision. XEQ will not be returning here anytime soon if it's traveling with the ones responsible for this destruction. I have to follow, even if that means losing the golems. She runs down an alley towards the edge of town, but turning a corner finds her way blocked. The young woman backtracks and tries a different route, but it takes her in the wrong direction. The rubble of fallen buildings has made this part of town into a maze. Jael looks around for the fastest way out and her eyes rest upon a pegasus standing nearby. The rider is on the other side, but seems preoccupied. She was with Osprey, right? Oh well, I need to get out of here fast and those are known for speed. It can't be too different from a draft horse. Even if it is, that's my only chance of catching up before they get too far. Running toward the winged horse, she throws herself upon its back and says "Go!" in her most commanding voice, usually reserved for the golems. NROOC: Me: Grand theft pegasus. Your turn, Seth. |

Noelle was engaged in conversation with the other mercenary leaders in town as Jael stealthily approached her mount. "This is unforgivable," she said, her voice wavering with rage. "Calm down, Noelle," Ocelot said, putting a hand on her shoulder. "These people lost their lives and their homes over a stupid goddamn squabble between grown men!" Noelle roared, swatting away his hand. "What would you have me do?!" "We'll make them answer for this, that's what," Osprey said quietly. He watched impassively as the citizens of Karaisali fled the ruined market district, some attempting to salvage what they could, others still refusing to leave the sides of loved ones killed in the attack. Osprey unconsciously clenched his fist. "This will not go unpunished." Suddenly, the sound of a horse's whinnying reached their ears, followed by a flutter of wings. When they turned toward the noise, they were greeted with the sight of Noelle's pegasus flying away with a woman on its back. "Stop!" Noelle shouted, lunging after her, but she was far too late; Jael was airborne. "Don't worry, we'll have one of the archers bring her down," Ocelot said, motioning for one of his men who had survived to come over. "Are you crazy?! You could hit Felicity!" "Then you're just going to let her get away?" Noelle gritted her teeth. "She can't fly forever. I'll borrow one of your horses and follow her until she lands." Ocelot stared at her incredulously. "You're not even going to ask? You're just going to do it?" "Can I, dear Ocelot?" she asked with false sweetness. "What's that? I can? Oh, thank you so much, good sir." Noelle turned and ran to the stables where their horses were being kept, slowing down only momentarily to swing herself into the saddle. Soon she was back outside, keeping Jael in her line of sight at all times. OOC: Whee. |

Van was mentally cursing; there was nothing he could do about that reward now, not now he'd been seen with Vergant. He'd just have to fall in with this lot and be done with it. Griez and Lachelle seemed to be here too, though, so in a way it was almost business as usual. Almost. --- Relus, however, did not think it was business as usual. Normally, he did not have Myke, Emysia and that... Tookie all staring at him as if to say 'excuse me Relus Thersiss but what the hell are you doing here'. Emysia... dear gods, she had to know everything that was happening in Langras by now, just from reading his mind like it was another spellbook. Please, Emysia, he thought, trying to get the message to her discreetly, don't tell Myke and Tookie about Golgoth just yet. We need to make sure they're ready to hear it, especially Tookie. --- Why Tookie? Emysia asked herself. Myke, yes, she could see Myke's purpose in all of this, but Tookie... Though, in a way, it made sense; why would Tookie- someone so alien to Elibe and Langras- be here if there was no reason for him to be? He didn't seem like the sort of person to get involved in something like this for the fun of it. But what was the purpose? --- Tookie just plain didn't trust Relus after the last time. |

OOC: Originally, Clark's inability to read the labels of the vials was supposed to be a subtle hint that he was not who he claimed to be...they're written in a script that would be standard fare used by Etrurian merchants, and someone from the western part of Lycia would probably be able to read them as well. He needs to know which ones say "fire" on them, and there are a decent amount of them. |

Maria Valine Maria leaned against the bark in an effort to recompose herself; the forest was a phantasmal blur in her eyes. Her desperate dash got her into the forest before most of the others, but she had never pushed her limits like this. Many of her assignments had a degree of mortal danger, but there was order--control. She was the one with the strength, the power...but here there was only pandemonium. She was hardly the strongest one of the group, and they were all struggling for their lives. It was frightening, sickening, but oh so, so exhilarating. This is what she had been waiting for all these years, while she was reciting the liturgy and settling pathetic disputes. The mercenaries gathered; Maria still situated herself towards the outside of the group, her face unknown to practically all. No doubt she had been seen fighting to defend the town, but that was logical, an obligation, charity. It was suspicious of her to follow them...if not for the harrowing situation, she would have expected outright hostility. But there was no time for that--everyone had their own hide to worry about. Once everyone was present, Clark addressed the gathering, and unveiled his true past...why everyone was in danger. Hunted for the truth, sealed within a mouth no one will believe...but with Bern involved! Erturia herself has grown delicate of late, and events have occurred beyond my station. This may not be the man I'm looking for, but this is where I need to be. Everything is being drawn here, and Desdin... "Let me have a look at those." She emerged from the back of the crowd, and approached Clark. "I'll reintroduce myself. I'm Maria Valine, and I'm a Templar in the employ of the Elimine Church. I was sent here to investigate uncommon occurrences, and you stuck out magnificently. Normally, I solve problems by wielding the Church's political clout, but it doesn't appear that's gonna help here." Maria finished reading the vials. "If you're looking to make wyverns scream, I recommend these. And if you're wondering why I'm still here...hell if I know, it just seemed right. If you don't mind me sending vague notes back to a few priests, I'd like to stick around. Templars are good at following orders." Edited by Jmyster, Mar 28 2010, 02:04 AM.

Clark looked at her oddly for a moment before recognizing her as the woman he had seen at the tavern. He glanced at the ones she had pointed out, making a mental note of the symbol on them. "Thanks," he said to the templar, "and I think you'll find I'm not particularly in the sort of situation that allows me to be picky with the company I keep, so feel free to stay around as long as you like. Just know that you picked the worst possible time to come with us." By now, the group had reached an area of the forest where the foliage grew thinner. Clark could see the houses and shops of the village they were looking for through the gaps in the trees. Turning his gaze toward the sky, he saw that the wyvern riders had lost their exact position and were merely running passes through the air over the treetops. "Alright, everyone, this is the last time we're running," Clark said. "We're going to sneak through the village and make a break for the bandit hideout we cleared out before. We should have no trouble reaching it safely, but it's imperative that they see us run into there. Once we get there, I'll tell you exactly what we're going to do." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Harmon walked over to Recens and Brannan and looked them over suspiciously. "Who the hell are you?" he demanded. "We were hired to keep an eye on Sydelle...by your liege, no less," Recens said, adding in the last bit as an afterthought. This caused Harmon to frown. Clark was supposed to come, not these people. Well, this certainly changes things...still, it's too late to back out now. "Alright, you'll do," Harmon said cryptically. He then returned to Alexander's side. "If it's not too much to ask, Your Grace, I propose that we move out now." "Yes, of course," Alexander said, nodding. "Everyone, let's march!" |

Streak nodded. "Gonna lay a trap for them, then? I must admit, it'll be nice to be the ones doing the ambushing for a change." He'd been moving from tree to tree rather than following along on the ground, but as the foliage grew thinner, he decided to rejoin the group on solid ground, landing quietly. |

If the wyverns are over this forest, then the mercenaries must be in it, thinks Jael, as she flies over the first trees. The pegasus turns sharply again, still trying to get rid of her. "I don't know if you can understand me, but I assure you that I do intend to let you go back to your owner once I catch up. So just keep going this way," Jael says through gritted teeth, using her free hand to pull the rein back in the right direction. XEQ continues to march in back of the band. At Clark's promise that they will not run anymore after reaching the bandit's fortress, it nods. When they reach their destination, the commander has plans. XEQ takes an arrow from over its shoulder in anticipation of shooting down the flying lizards. Carrying an arrow will not slow it down. Edited by Lewa, Apr 3 2010, 03:28 PM.

The various other mercenaries- both Elibian and Langrasian- didn't say anything either, simply accepting that things would work out somehow. Except Van. but he'd probably come to terms with the whole thing soon enough. Probably. --- Reynald said nothing as the orders for the soldiers to march were given. and he discreetly signalled his compnaions to do the same. The next update for the RP will come in the form of the events starting, so I've been waiting until I have enough time to fully plan those out. Unfortunately, I've been bogged down with homework and RSO activities lately. Still, this week I might have enough free time to get something started again, though I can't guarantee that I'll be able to update it consistently until I'm back home, which will be a week from Wednesday. (By consistently, I mean I won't be able to update it right as the actions take place; it might take a day or so. I'll be studying for finals, y'know.) Since people are going to see this anyway...I recently updated the skill sheet slightly. Tookie's skill has been changed, and I'm going to add one for Ruby after I'm done posting this. |
