I'm...HUNGRY!

Byron and Ognus trudged along in silence as the sun rose high in the sky. They were in no hurry to reach Sydelle, but they were quite glad to be away from Karaisali. Neither of them was entirely certain they'd be able to return to the town after what had happened; worse yet, they couldn't be certain of the safety of everyone else in the group, considering that they didn't know exactly what the job they had stolen entailed.

Regardless, they'd find out when they arrived, for better or for worse.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After he caught his breath, Clark adjusted himself on the back of the pegasus and craned his neck to see who his surprise rescuer was. His face twitched when he recognized the girl who had been bent on XEQ's destruction the day before, but he said nothing. For whatever reason, she didn't seem to know who he was, so he would remain passive until she became threatening once more.

"Where are we heading?" Clark asked politely.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OOC: Yeah, not a lot to see here, folks. I'll have more from the Fury's side of things once Soul posts the RP he said he wanted to post, but for now that's about it. Please note that the tunnel underneath the bandit hideout leads to an area on the outer edge of the village that is surrounded by foliage, so feel free to have your characters come out from underground. In fact, I encourage it.

OOC: I'm gonna go ahead and post this in here...it's not the next full part (I'll do that later tonight), but I want to RP Graham's death, at the very least.

Graham fought doggedly on to the bitter end. Even when the wyvern rider disarmed him, he refused to give up, driven ever onward by the adrenaline in his veins.

Suddenly, white-hot pain seared through his side. He looked back to see that one of the enemy's soldiers had slipped past him during their skirmish, and now her spear had ended his last stand. Standing became too much for the old soldier, and Graham fell to his knees, growing lightheaded from the loss of blood.

Mustering up all the remaining strength he had, Graham looked over his shoulder at his killer and uttered one last cry of defiance before succumbing to his wounds.

"Long...live...Ruve!"

Jael looks back at the explosion (she's not a cool guy), too surprised to steer the pegasus or listen to Clark's question. The animal is frightened by the blast and pushes as hard as it can to get away, until its wings are screaming out with pain. At this point, it folds them up around its passengers and dives to the ground, landing hard.
Jael, not prepared, falls off of the horse, narrowly avoiding the axe she found. She quickly stands up again and looks at the man who jumped out of the window.
He doesn't look like one of the soldiers, and he's clearly not a local villager, so he must be one of the mercenaries. He looks a bit familiar. Must have seen him in that big battle while Karaisali was burning.
Jael curtsies. Ow, I must have pulled a muscle in my leg, she thinks, wincing slightly, before smiling at Clark and saying, "Sir, while you were inside that building, did you happen to see a large brown man-shaped being with a bow?"

Alexander arrived at the gates of the outpost just in time to see the final soldier fall. Within a few minutes, the remainder of Sydelle's forces and Gast's reinforcements gathered there as well. Harmon waded through his soldiers toward Alexander's side, applauding as he did.

"Well done, young duke!" he praised Alexander.

"Thank you, Sir Liucharde," Alexander said gratefully, "but we're far from done here. We need to use our momentum to hit Ruve hard before they have time to prepare."

"We're ready to march again at your command, milord," Cobalt said, a grin pulling at the corners of his mouth. Valerie, who stood beside him, nodded in agreement.

Alexander looked around the inside of the outpost. There appeared to be enough supplies to support a small group for three days without aid, as well as spare weapons.

"We'll stock up here first, then continue on our way!" Alexander proclaimed to the group. "Take fifteen minutes to grab anything you wish to take with you, then meet me on the other side of the outpost!"

Recens wasted no time in meeting up with Alice before entering the building. He stepped over a pile of discarded spears and glanced at a rack of hanging knives before giving up.

"What have we gotten ourselves into?" he muttered under his breath. When Alice didn't respond, he looked around and realized she was looking at a box in the corner. He dropped to one knee beside her and examined the foreign object himself. It was an incredibly dark shade of blue, to the point of being almost black, and there were runes etched all over its sides.

"What's this?" Recens asked Alice.

"No idea," she responded, tracing the symbols with her fingers. "Looks important, though."

Jael nods. "Yes, I don't imagine you could have missed it. It's a monster, sir, and that explosion back there won't do anything besides possibly trap it for a few hours. I'm going back to find it. If you could only tell me where you last saw it, that would be of great help, sir," she explains politely.

Pretend I put something witty here.

Fifteen minutes was more time than they needed, honestly. Between the four mercenaries, they wouldn't need much. Some healing salves- while they'd seen healers on the battlefield, Reynald had insisted that they not rely on them- would be the most prominent thing. Food, while an issue, would presumably be handled by the higher ups. This did not stop Valtair seeing if there was anything he could gather quickly that would keep over a long march and not need to cook, however.

He was disappointed, which just left them to regroup at the meeting point.

---

Daylight came as a welcome sight for Tookie, after that tunnel. On it's own, he wouldn't have minded. Running for his life in a crowd while he could hear explosions, however, was a completely different story. Sure, he'd been whacked in the face by a few branches, but that was nothing and at least they'd all gotten out of there alive.

Then the voices kicked in, from what he could only assume was that thing that had been fixed to his chest.

Useless...

Huh?

Running... why bother? It is an exercise in futility...

Because I enjoy not being stabbed to death or blown to bits?

Coward... all things die eventually...

Yeah, but if I can put that off for a while, that's lovely.

Fool... you will soon regret that... you shall wish you had died here...

Well.

That wasn't ominous at all. Looking around to make sure the whole thing was just in his head, he noticed Emysia seemed rather worried...

Dammit, she just heard all of that, didn't she?

Fortunately, none of the others had noticed anything. Presumably that meant it was nothing worth making them worry about, so it was probably best that he kept this "weird voices from the emblem that want me to die" thing to himself for a while.

---

OOC: I needed that to happen at some point soon. Might as well be now. >_>

Clark invented his lie quickly, doing his best to sell his story. "I'm a mercenary the locals hired to take care of a disturbance. They said something strange was lurking around the edge of town, and it was like nothing I've ever seen. Taller than any man, and it moved so...rigidly. I chased it into that building and set a trap for it, but I doubt it's still alive." He knew better than that, but any outsider would doubt Jael's story, and Clark needed to play the part. I'm going to collect my reward, but if you think it's still alive, feel free to look through the rubble."

Does he think I'm stupid or blind? I can still see the wyverns from here. But if he won't tell the truth about why he was here, he won't tell me anything.
Not letting her thoughts show, Jael smiles and nods. "I hope you're right, sir. I need to be sure, though."
She clambers back onto the pegasus, then yanks on the reins. "Let's go!" she commands.
The mount swats at a fly with its tail, but otherwise doesn't move.

Clark sighed with relief and headed back toward the village. Before much longer, the wyverns would begin to wonder why their riders hadn't returned, and when that happened...he had a feeling the girl on the pegasus wouldn't be an issue.

By the time he reached the area where the exit to the tunnel was supposed to be, everyone had already come out and was waiting for him in the bushes. He motioned for them to follow him, and they returned to the forest they had taken to get there, this time heading northwest.

"It's safe to say Bern's soldiers have arrived in Etruria in force," Clark told them. "We're going to meet with an old friend of mine in Reglay, but we'll need to travel undetected."

Frustrated by the unyielding pegasus, Jael gets off and begins walking back toward the ruined fort. As she walks, she tries to figure out exactly what is going on.
So that man back there was with XEQ. He must have been, or he wouldn't have bothered to lie. He was in the group being chased by the Bernese soldiers, who left their wyverns there.
She looks at the flying reptiles. Noticing that they seem agitated, perhaps by the explosion, she gives them a wide berth.
And then he blew up the building. I believe that part, since he's the only one who jumped out. But why would he leave his allies in there to die? Was he a traitor? He clearly wasn't from Bern. They say there's honor among thieves, but maybe not among mercenaries. He could have just gotten rid of them because he wanted all the gold for himself.
By this time, Jael is at the edge of the rubble. She looks at the mess, then spots something moving. Thinking it is XEQ, she begins to make her way through in that direction, only then realizing that she left the found axe with the pegasus.
Fortunately, there is a lance tip poking out from underneath a large chunk of the wall. Jael pulls on it, and even more fortunately, the weapon slides right out.
First the axe, then the pegasus, now this. Is St. Elimine is finally on my side? I pray that she lets me get the information I need from XEQ. If I can just find Herbert's body, I'll never sin again. I promise.
With that, she takes the unfamiliar weapon and sets off toward the movement she saw in the midst of the destroyed hideout.

XEQ, meanwhile, is marching after the rest of the mercenaries, in the forest again. It listens to the commander as he tells them that Bern is here in force and that they must go to Reglay undetected. The golem isn't so good at being undetected. Not without its clothing. And it hasn't had a chance to obtain any more, as they've been moving almost non-stop since the fire that burnt the archer's disguise.
But it can simply shoot anybody who sees it. That counts as undetected, doesn't it?

The mercenaries had been walking through the unending trees for quite some time before Clark stopped them. He paced in front of them momentarily before speaking.

"We're making a brief stop in a town up ahead. XEQ, you'll wait here until I return with something big enough to cover you. I don't think people will react too kindly to...whatever you are. For the rest of you, stock up on anything you need, because there's no telling whether or not we'll make it to our next destination safely.

"Before we leave the cover of the forest, though...there's something that's been bugging me." In a flash, Clark had drawn his sword and was dangerously close to Van, his eyes focused completely on the spearman. "Who the hell are you, and why are you following us? I find it somewhat suspicious that you arrived right alongside those soldiers. You're not spying for them, are you?" Clark moved even closer to Van, leaving mere inches between them. "Answer carefully. I have a nasty twitch in my arm that acts up when someone lies."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The surface of the rubble was disturbed slightly; once, then again, and then one final time before giving way to Kajan's head. He gasped for air and frantically scrambled to move the debris that was currently resting on his torso. As he twisted and wriggled around, he caught sight of another person in the distance.

"Hey!" Kajan shouted, waving his free arm frantically, "You there! Help us!"

XEQ walks at the back of the group until they stop. At Clark's command, it nods, then stands perfectly still as no human could do. It watches as the commander challenges the newest mercenary, but gives no sign of life.

Hearing a voice cry for help, Jael moves faster in that direction, then finds a man poking out of the rubble. "Are you alright, sir?" She grabs a piece of broken masonry and pulls it away from him.
That armor he has means he must be one of the soldiers. Maybe they know where XEQ is. But first I have to dig them out.

NROOC:
Me: Jael helped rescue people in Karaisali, then saved Clark, and now Kajan. And each time it brought her one step further away from her goal. She ought to get a medal for this.

... Well, damn.

"Van Urustwhil," Van said, trying to stay calm, "sword-for-hire. I'm following you because I got caught up in that hellfire that was once Karaisali, and I jumped in on your side because two old friends happened to be here as well."

Griez, now would be a good time for you to talk. Save your old employer, please. This isn't how I want to die.

---

"Two old friends..." Myke mused to himself. "... Hang on, Griez, didn't you mention a Van earlier?"

"If we were talking about swords for Tookie," the armoured man said, trying to run possibilities through his mind, "I probably would have. Van's swords are a better fit for Tookie than anything we'd use."

"Wait," Tookie interjected, trying stay calm and forget about the weird voice in his head, "shouldn't you step in right about now if he's the right guy? This is either going to end badly or very badly for him."

"I could..." Griez almost smiled; having actual power over Van was a first for him, but he was too aware of the gravity of the situation to let that get the best of him. "But he seems perfectly calm right now."

"He's waiting for you to step in, Griez," Emysia warned him. "I wouldn't recommend sitting around for too long." At least give me a chance to see more of what's going through his head...

---

OOC: Yeah, I barely even know what I'm doing here. Probably not the best of mindsets to be in here. =\

OOC: Forgot to post in here, lol.

"Your 'old friends' have about ten seconds to step forward before my sword becomes good friends with your neck," Clark growled. In their current situation, his enemies had a huge advantage; he didn't want to risk giving them another one in the form of a spy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to the girl's help, Kajan was able to escape from the rubble with only minor injuries.

"Are you alright, sir?" she asked him as he climbed out of the wreckage.

"I'm fine, thank you," he said, his eyes flitting frantically over the ruined building for signs that the others were still alive. Seeing another arm sticking out of the pile of stones, Kajan hurried over and quickly began lifting the rocks off of the arm until he could see the face of the man to whom it belonged.

Sadly, his efforts were in vain. After a few seconds, Kajan had uncovered the man's face only to find it covered in blood. The man's eyes stared unblinkingly off into space. Kajan gritted his teeth for as long as he could before his anger and despair overwhelmed him, and then roared with anguish at the sky.

After a few minutes of excavation, Kajan had confirmed the deaths of eight out of his ten men. One looked like he had died during Kajan's reckless charge, which filled him with even more guilt. Jason had been one of the survivors, which did nothing to placate his mood; fortunately, the pompous noble seemed too shaken up by the whole affair to open his mouth.

Kajan sullenly walked back over to the girl who had helped him earlier. "Thank you," he said, being much more polite this time. "Is there any way I can repay you, Miss?"

Jael stays out of the man's way as he roars and searches for other survivors. She too is looking around, certain that XEQ would have survived that explosion. Where did it go? Could it possibly have escaped before the building went? No, I still would have seen it. Golems don't move quickly.
Then the soldier comes back, thanking her again and asking if he can do anything for her in return.
Jael shakes her head. "No, sir. I'm not so selfish as to demand aid from a man who has barely survived a tragic accident. I do have a question that you might be able to answer, however. There was something in there that was not human. A giant made of earth, wielding a bow. Did you, by any chance, see where it went?"

Jael looks at the ruined fort, which contains fewer bodies than it should. "Nor did I."
Then she looks back at Kajan. "Sir, the men you were after, did one of them jump out of a window? Because that man told me a story about how he and the inhuman being were in there alone, despite your wyverns being clearly visible outside. Then he went that way, claiming he was going to get his reward for killing the monster." She points in the direction Clark went after she rescued him.

Clark eyed Griez warily before grudgingly backing off and putting his sword away. He strode to the edge of the trees and spoke to the group without facing them.

"We're not far from Gast. Stopping there would be preferable, but I'll eat my boots if Marakken doesn't have every major city under watch." Clark turned around and looked at the group, his expression as serious as stone. "This town is small, but that doesn't mean you can let your guard down. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious. I'd like to leave in twenty minutes or less if possible, and that includes the time it takes to get clothing for XEQ."

OOC: Yeah, I realized I hadn't responded on their side yet...anyway, feel free to walk around the town. It's pretty small, with just a few aisles of merchants, but you can make it suit your needs RP-wise.

After watching the soldiers fly away (I assume they flew away; why walk if you have wyverns?), Jael turns in the direction she was just pointing.
If that man was on the same side as XEQ, then he does know where that monster went. He doesn't want to tell me anything, but maybe if I follow him, I'll find out more. Now, where did that stupid pegasus go?
She walks toward where she left the animal, but it is absent. Looking around, she sees it drinking from a small stream.
"Come here!" she commands, hitting the butt of the lance on the ground forcefully.
The animal looks up, then rolls its head and whinnies.
"Once I catch XEQ, you're free to go back to your owner. I promise," claims Jael. "But look at your situation. You're a pegasus. A noble creature. Your owner is a mercenary. That's far from a noble job. I doubt you save people often while you're with her. I won't claim to be a flawless person, but at least I'm not a killer for hire. You'd be better off with me."
The pegasus takes this opportunity to relieve itself.
"And I'm clearly insane, because I'm speaking to you as if you can understand Elibian." With a sigh, she turns away from the animal and starts walking toward the nearest town.

OOC: Because she apparently knows which way Clark actually went, mirite?

Anyway, this is long overdue.

JARRO

Once Jarro had arrived outside and regrouped with the others, it wasn't long before Clark rejoined them. The group started making their way to another village, presumably, without much explanation from Clark until he eventually stopped them and explained his plan. Afterwards, he approached the person Jarro noticed joined up with the group shortly after (or possibly during) the battle with Byron and began threatening him, presumably to ensure he wasn't a spy. Not convinced at his answer at first, he was about to kill him until Greiz stopped him. Jarro wasn't entirely satisfied himself, as who's to say all three of them weren't spies, though Jarro admitted that was fairly unlikely. Plus, using that logic, anyone could potentially be a spy, no matter how unlikely. So, Jarro simply put that thought out of his mind.

There was now the matter of contacting Augustria about recent events... then it hit Jarro. He completely forgot he left the spell he used to contact his contacts, which meant Jarro was without a way to reach them. He started cursing under his breathe repeatedly for this mistake, as it was now too late to go back to get it. He had to hope either someone he recognized passed by or he'd have to return to Augustria by foot, knowing full well that if he did, he may very well lose track of Clark... which would bode ill. There was time to make a decision though and it was possible he could convince Clark to go to Augustria instead, though that was unlikely, since Clark mentioned every major city could be on watch.

OOC: I would RP with Fairah and co, but there's really nothing significant they could add, and it would more or less be random conversation and crap like that, so meh >_>
