The one and only

While I've been familiar with the game for some time now (having seen screenshots and video, sifted through stats and character/item data, etc.) I had never actually sat down and played it. A few days ago I finally downloaded a translated ROM and have been working through it chapter by chapter ever since.

It's incredible. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I'm enjoying it at least (if not more than) as much as I did the first time I picked up FE7, and you can all see how far my fandom for that game has taken me. I'm here. The game plays familiar thanks to experience with Rekka no Ken and yet the subtle differences make for a fresh change. I much prefer the item stat difference in real-game use. Bosses actually take strategy to defeat. Ranged weapons (apart from bows) aren't easy hits.

The thing about FE7 is that after a certain point (and I'm speaking of gameplay with well-designed teams on normal modes) nearly all enemies can be double-attacked. This reduces the difficulty of the maps and ends most skirmishes in a single round. The strategy becomes which unit you use to kill which enemy. Well, if there's a point in FE6 at which the same thing will happen, I have not found it yet. Sure, I get my doubles and single round KOs in, but not every time. The strategy instead becomes in which order you need to move your units and design your attacks so that you take the least amount of damage in return, and a flaw in that design becomes all the more costly. It's the same type of strategy you would use in the first few chapters of FE7 while all your units are at low levels, but in FE6 the effect lasts much longer.

I admit, I've always enjoyed the initial chapters of E/HM and all of LM the most, even if the last several do make for some epic battles. The initial chapters of FE6 have large and detailed maps with more pliable routes allowing for different tactics and approaches. It's the little things that make all the difference.

And ITT: We're not going to talk about Sacred Stones. Please.

FE6 has some pretty bad imbalances, TBH. I can't recall ALL of them right now, but I know magic is very difficult to use because of stupid high tome weights.

FE5 is probably the most balanced game in the series, though it has a not-entirely unfair reputation of being overly difficult.

iirc, FE6 had very LOW tome weights.

But yes, general balance issues means I like FE7 more than FE6, but 6 is still my second favorite in the series.

I'm...HUNGRY!

I stopped playing very close to the end of the game for some reason, but I'll probably finish it and then play through on Hard Mode. My experience was very similar to Knarf's; I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way.

Ok, hop aboard then. Adventure awaits.

I finished it, but wasn't huge on it. I think the biggest problem was that I couldn't play it on GBA, though. Having to do it on my laptop and not a portable system took something away from it.

I imported the FE6 cart, but that was years before I got a laptop, so I'd just use patched ROM now.

For example:

Just beat the boss, Scott, the berserker with his 64% chance for a critical hit, with a very slow and careful process of switching between Rutgar (using Fir's Wo Dao) and Bors, rescuing, healing, positioning, attacking, etc. Not once in the umpteen times I've beaten FE7 has any boss come close to putting up such a fight. Not once. And that was Chapter 9. I actually let out a cry of victory once the brute finally went down. Suck on it, Scott.

As said before, tome weights in FE6 are ridiculously low. Nosferatu is godly.

FE4 has tome problems, particularly the fire series.

FE just doesn't hold my interest any more.

4:25 PM - John Ѯzzingford: For example, you could take the cast of the Mario games, and set them up in some kind of detective-versus-cannibal-mastermind drama.

Apejack does that with anything that's remotely popular, because somehow he thinks we give a crap about his opinion.

On topic: I...actually haven't played FE6 in forever. Never finished it...somehow, off the GBA, it lost its magic. I should totally download it again though.

Is also great
And would suffice."

This really has been the year for me to get back into older games that used to completely fuel my world; first semester there was a Starcraft phase that swept through my school and naturally I was able to dominate all those posers, second semester was Pokemon Red (my Rhydon is SO KICKASS), and this has been the summer of the GBA. I've already blasted through Castlevania, Metriod: Zero Mission, the two FE GBA games that matter, LoZ: Oracles (ok, GBC but same idea). Next stop is Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball '97 and then I can die happy.
