-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History of Hogwarts "Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago - the precise date is uncertain - by the four greatest wizards of the age. The four school houses are named after them: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. They built this castle together, far from prying Muggle eyes, for it was an age when magic was feared by common people and witches and wizards suffered much persecution. For a few years, the founders worked in harmony together, seeking out youngsters who showed signs of magic and bringing them up to the castle to be educated. But then disagreements sprang up between them. A rift began to grow between Slytherin and the others. Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed that magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. He disliked taking students of Muggle parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy. After a while, there was a serious argument on the subject between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and Slytherin left the school. Reliable historical sources tell us this much, but these honest facts have been obscured by the fanciful legend of the Chamber of Secrets. The story goes that Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in the castle, of which the others knew nothing. Slytherin, according to the legend, sealed the Chamber of Secrets so that none would be able to open it until his own true heir arrived at the school. The heir alone would be able to unleash the horror within and purge the school of all who were unworthy to study magic." - Professor Binns |

It's a golden gryffin. Think french. Gryffin d'Or. Medieval wizards only had one name (Godric, Salazar, Rowena, Helga). Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were only nicknames. |

uhh, I think Gryfinndor does have a lion, and ravenclaw is an Eagle. I found my stuff here: http://www.mugglenet.com/Hogwarts/houses.shtml is was the only fansite listed on JK Rowlings site that had anything about the Houses (well that I could find on the website) Hmm, the link does not seem to be working. But you can go to MuggleNet.com and under the heading Info, go to Hogwarts, then go and find Houses and it will give you Lots of info. |

no, Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs are rivals with slytherin. But Ravenclaws get along with Gryffindor and Hufflepuff and don't bother with Slytherin. Just because Gryffindor and Slytherin are rivals doesnt mean ravenclaw and hufflepuff are. |

God lord, i don't mean to sound condesending, rude, obnoxious etc, but i think i'm about to...have many of the people on this topic actually read the books? Hannah, if you have you should def know that slytherin's animal is a snake, and whoever asked about hufflepuff, there is the picture of the hufflepuff crest (and all the others) with the animal on it all over this site!!!!!!! OMG, i just...i can't...in CoS it explains all of this, so if you haven't read the books post here, that in my opinion is the only excuse to ask these qu's unless you're just really supid!!!! (the only sensible qu i can think of on this topic is whether ravenclaw has an eagle or a raven, but i think it's an eagle.) i'm sorry if i've offended anyone, hannah, i didn't mean to have a go at you especially, it's just when i look at the last ten posts when i'm writing, yours are the only really stupid comments i can see, and i can't remember what other folk have said cos i'm so annoyed. arg!!!! any MOD, feel free to delete this if you think it's bad, i just needed to write it!!! |

I don't exactly know if it's an eagle or a raven on the Ravenclaw crest (not much difference), but each house's name has a relation with its animal, so: Ravenclaw - raven Slytherin - snake (the snake slithers) Gryffindor - as I said before, it looks like a lion, but I think it's a golden gryffin Hufflepuff - yet to find out. come to think of it, Slytherin does sound a lot like slithering. |

Ravenclaw's animal is deffinately a Raven. First, Ravenclaw... Second, look at the picture very closely... I've seen raven and eagles up close and the beak, wings, ect. are deffinately that of a raven. |
