Very random poll, but I am curious to see how many people are drinking over or under the legal dranking age. In 1984 a bill was passed by Congress making the legal age limit to buy and sell alcoholic beverages 21. As we all well know, this age limit is numerously broken by underage drinkers. But is what we doing really all that bad? Yes, alcohol can be harmful to the body, but it can also help the body. Studies have shown that light drinkers have a lower risk over heart disease! 30%- 50% less than nondrinkers. (more information here)) If you wish, you can remain anonymous in answering this poll, but it may also be a good nonheated debate on whether or not the drinking age is fair or if she should be raised or lower. |

From what I've read and heard I think people should be drink alcohol. I mean there's nothing wrong with it as long as you don't over do it and abuse the liquid. Yes it can be harmful to the body, but that's for people who abuse alcohol. If you're a light drinker then there's nothing wrong with it and I would even encourage it seeing as it does to the body some good. As for the drinking age, I personally think it should be lowered. People don't pay attention to it anyway. There are so many teenagers and pre-teens that go to parties and get drunk, so it's really quite pointless to have a drinking age in the first place. Yes, people can go to jail/get fined if they get caught, but most people just shrug it off and don't listen. People think it's cool to rebel against the law, and I think that's part of the reason why so many underaged people drink in the first place. If the age was lowered, I wouldn't be suprised if less teenagers drink alcohol. The age is there for a reason that doesn't sink into the minds of young people - safety. I think the age should be 16, like it is in a lot of parts of Europe. Meh, that's just my opinion. Don't worry Lauren/April the drinking age in Canada is the same. lol! |

well, im 18, but i live in england, so i can legally drink, and i do, but not too much, cos then you just get stupid and regret it in the morning, (not saying i've never done that, i just don't like it! hey, we all do silly things! word of warning, do not drink 6 different cocktails and then a depth charge (half pint beer, half pint cider, with a shot glass of vodka in the bottom, down it in one so you get the shot of vodka at the end! then later that night be sick.) not sure about other places in europe, but i know in germany you can drink beer when you are 16, but you have to wait until 18 for other drinks, even alcho pops. |

There aren't many people over 21 on this board (if anyone anymore... I know Squall was), however, the legal drinking age in Romania is 18. I haven't got to that, but I do ocasionally drink. What's wrong with that? |

Well, I'm twelve, and I've had s ip of beer, eww! It tastes like crap! the only alchoholic beverage i have ever sipped and liked is Peach Snops, yummy! In Canada the legal drinking age differs from province to province, though the highest is 19, Faith. <_< Here are the dinking ages: Province | Age| Former Age | Date of Change Alberta |18 |21 |1 April 1971 British Columbia |19 |21 |15 April 1970 Manitoba |18 |21 |1 August 1970 New Brunswick |19 |21 |1 August 1972 Newfoundland and Labrador |19 |21 |25 July 1972 Northwest Territories |19 |21 |15 July 1970 Nova Scotia |19 |21 |13 April 1971 Ontario |19 |18 |1 January 1979 Prince Edward Island |19 |18 |1 July 1987 Québec |18 |20 |July 1972 Saskatchewan |19 |18 |1 September 1976 Yukon |19 |21 |February 1970 And for all of you who may not know the outlay of Canda's provinces, here is a map of Canada to check out: Map of Canada |

I'm from the USA, and the legal drinking age here is 21. I'm 17, and I don't drink, just because I don't find it attractive to be drunk and acting stupid. (Yes, I know Aidan's been drunk before. He's very different than me.) But anyway, yes, 14 and 15 year olds get drunk and drink at parties and such, but if the drinking age was lowered, this would be increased. 14 and 15 year olds drink to be cool, and to have a good time, and act stupid and crazy. What do you think would happen if this group of kids was certainly allowed by law to do this? What do you think would happen in the long run? Another thing, the drinking age doesn't just create rebellion to drink. Some people don't drink because the legal age they've always known is 21, and that is simply the age you start to drink. It's just how it is. No questions asked. Disclaimer: I see nothing wrong with drinking as long as you don't get drunk. However, I do think something's wrong when you do it stupidly and underage, which is breaking the law. I honestly don't know if I could handle myself around a lot of alcohol. |

I voted a while ago. I'm from the US too, and being only 17 almost 18. I have drunk alcohol once or twice. I don't do it all the time just when I'm with my friends that do. But I can control myself and know when to stop. |

I disagree with this. I am 14, almost to be 15, and yes I do drink, not every weekend, and when I drink I don't go overboard where I'm throwing up everywhere a hour later. For some reason, people don't believe me when I drink, I think mainly because I am a girl and the people I hang out with don't drink (most of them anyway) and think that I am saying that I do only to be "cool". This bugs me slightly because I am not trying to be cool, I drink, the people who ask me usually drink too, and more than me. As for acting stupid and crazy, I do that whether or not I'm drunk, I have a good time pretty much everywhere I go, I probably am more talkative though after a drink or two, but not by much. |

I didn't mean that you don't have a good time wherever you go. There's a difference in that and being flat out stupid. Flat out stupid is where you're standing on the edge of a grease covered building singing Queen's "Bicycle" while trying to do the electric slide. I have a good time everywhere too. When I said 14 year olds drink to be cool, I was talking about most of them. I've never met you, but evidently you're in that small 1% that does it for some other unknown reason. I've just never met anyone that young who drinks and does it for another reason. I'm just going to be blunt, when you're 14, you want to be cool, no matter who you are. Even Jimi Hendrix wanted strived for popularity (like he needed too). I would just like to know what other reason there is for a 14 or 15 (or 16 and 17, for that matter) to drink other than rebellious reasons, popularity, or stupidity. Oh, and I don't mean to attack. I just like to know these things. Mostly to satisfy my own curiosity. |

No, it's fine- that was the point of this thread to get rid of curiosity And the reasons for drinking so young- yes some reasons are for popularity- like underage smoking (which I do not do), mine I'm not excatly sure- my whole life I have live behind a resturant/bar and my mom has always talk to me about her views on drinking (considering my dad does not like me drinking the little bit I do, we never really talk about it) I just think that if I do want to try a drink, I am allowed that much. Most people do find it shocking that my mom does allow me to drink every now and then and the fact that I do not have to go around sneaking it (which would fall under rebellion I believe) but it is because she was so wild as a teenager and she did feel like she had to go around sneaking it. Personally I do feel like this is better then strict parents telling their kids they have to wait until the age to legally get a drink or get drunk cause I do believe that curiousity will eventually get them and when they get to that age they'll over do it. I have no idea whether or not that makes ANY sense once so ever since I was trying to think of the words that I wanted to use. Basically my reasons for drinking are because I like the taste of it, sometimes I like the drinks better virgin then with the alcohol, sometimes it's the opposite around. I do feel that people overdo drinking a lot- espcially underage drinkers. |

I'm fourteen and I don't drink and don't see any reason to actually start. I really agree with some of Aidan's opinions. My friends will drink until they literally puke. It's disgusting, and then the next day when they all have hangovers, they think they're so cool, defying the drinking age. |

Personally, I have already mentioned about me only being twelve and all, but I see no reason to drink at all. I have already made a 'secret vow' to myself to never drink or smoke, so there ya go. I don't expect anyone to believe that this vow is rational, because I'm sure many people would see it and be like, 'well your stupid'. But in the long run, drinking won't make you popular at all. AND we studied drinking and stuff in Health, and at the ages of 13-18 drinking will permenantly effect your entire life. The alchohal that goes ot the brain can affect it because our brains are still forming and growing, and the alchohol will stunt or defect this growth. So ya, that was my little bit. |

I 100% disagree with the fact that all 14 year olds want to be cool. A lot of 14 & 15 year olds like to think they're cool and will pretty much do anything for that 'cool' status, but not every teenager that age is like that. I'm not like that at all. I don't do things to make me cool and I really couldn't give a #### if I was cool or not. In Elementary school I was the biggest dork ever. Practically no friends, ect. but I didn't give a ####. It was who I was and I continue being that way because it defined me. In Highschool I'm not at the level anymore. My school is divided into three large groups and even the teachers would agree: Jamie-Leanne's friends, Alicia A.'s friends and everyone else. In those groups there are subgroups (stereotype labels). But I didn't do anything for that 'cool' status. I was just myself and I even right now I couldn't care less how popular I am. It's called confidence - and not many people have it believe it or not. As for this other reason - it tastes good. lol! A lot of alcohol tastes pretty good and I'll eat/drink something if it tastes good without any other reason. Yeah so that's my second bit. |

Jamie, if you read that whole thing, it clarified what I said about 14 and 15 year olds wanting to be cool. I said that MOST of them are like that, not all, by any chance. I know tons of kids that age who don't do that. But I do know that everyone wants acceptance, especially when you're younger. It's nothing to be ashamed of, everyone wants it. It's how you get that acceptance and to what extremities you take it that can be shameful. |

Well Im 18 and live in the US. I do drink, not every weekend. I do drink and get drunk.. But I dont throw up everywhere. I usually dont do things that are dumb, although i did ride a piece of wood down a flight of stairs and hurt my ankle pretty bad. But hey, Im in a fraternity(not a frat) and we drink and have fun. I think the age should be 18, since by 18 a lot of kids have already tried drinking. i mean i got drunk for the first time before i started high school.. |
