I See Cheaters Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In the case of cheating it has one most unfortunate side effect. In the online MP arena some people get a little paranoid; people who are otherwise rational people begin to think everyone who is better or scoring more points than them, is cheating. It can be hard at times to determine who is, and isn't cheating but it is important to give the benefit of the doubt sometimes. At one time or another those players who are good at gaming have been accused of cheating and in some cases even kicked from servers based solely on suspicion. So how can you know who is and isn't cheating? Well, there is no one way to know for sure but the best defense is the use of an anti-cheat. In addition to AC's there are some methods built into games that can help you examine the player more closely before making a decision. The majority of games now have the ability to record demos in-game. These demos show what is going on from the player's perspective and can show a pattern that can prove or disapprove a cheat is being used. If recording a demo is not an option then you can always use screenshots. While these are not as effective they do work. Once reviewed by you, if you do suspect the player is cheating, forward the information to the server admin. This information is always in the listing of the server or even in scrolling messages on the server in-game. Speaking as someone who has been a server admin, when you have a player who you suspect is too good to be true make sure you check them out before immediately kick or ban them. Sometimes it is better to err on the side of caution and presume the player is skilled, than to assume they are cheating. If they really are cheating it will be proven sooner or later anyway. The Mind of a Cheater Whenever you discuss cheating it is inevitable that one question in particular will come up. Why does the cheater cheat? There are several reasons that have come to light, that would account for why most of them do it. While not all cheaters fit these, most do fall in somewhere for these three. * Peer Pressure: Their friends do it and so it is easier to justify doing it themselves. * Self-Esteem: Getting good scores and winning in a video game can be a boost to an otherwise low self-esteem; even if the win was not honestly attined. To some that is a minor detail. For some people being the best at something even if you have to cheat, is better than never being the best. * The Better than Average Jerk: This is the guy who likes to come into the game and ruin it for everyone else. He often does not even try to hide the fact that he is cheating. Causing everyone else to have a bad experience is something that gives him a thrill of control. There is one other group that bears mentioning. These are the cheaters who only use the cheats in servers specifically designed for this purpose. They only play with other players who are also using the same cheats. This adds a new dimension to a game that may have gone stale and/or adds more of a challenge. What these players do in this arena really is there own concern and most people would not care if this was how all cheaters played. But there are plenty who decide to invade non-cheating servers with cheats in use. One last bit of information on the average cheater; most are in their teens and it is estimated that they are between 13 - 18 years of age. |

 Also here are some other known characteristics of cheaters as done in a study by Harvard University: Cheaters seldom bath Cheaters will not take the time to to play a game fairly because they lack the attention span to do so Cheaters drool, laugh and grunt uncontrollably while playing on-line games ![]() Cheaters normally suffer from a form of retarded mental development, but seem to do fairly well with computers Cheaters have small hands, small feet and subsequently a small.....well you know.... Cheaters blame the world for their skewed outlook on competition, having never succeeded at any aspect of their life. There is a 12 step program for cheaters to aid in their recovery from this sickness and become a productive member of society: 1. First admit you have a problem 2. Sell your mouse 3. Sell your keyboard 4. Sell your monitor 5. Sell your computer 6. Sell your modem 7. Take a bath (or shower will work) 8. Learn to walk around with you mouth closed so you don't drool 9. Make a point of going outside in the daylight at least 10 minutes a day 10. Try real hard to make a friend, any friend...or buy a cat maybe. 11. Get a job 12. Get a life If you want to help these bottom feeders return to society you can help. Send a donation of $10 or $100 (US) to the Fort Apache Squad. Address can be found on the home page. PSO |
