Who's Making the Cheats? So far we have covered what constitutes a cheat as well as who makes up most of the cheaters and now you want to know who makes all the files, hacks and cheats? Most of the people responsible for making the cheats are pretty intelligent in the ways of code. At first it may start out as a challenge; something they just want to see if they can do. When it is a game that employs an anti-cheat it becomes an even bigger challenge to see if they can beat the system. Most of the successful cheat makers have been at it for quite awhile and know the ins and outs of the game and game engine. In some cases they are almost better than the developers themselves. Here is a brief explanation of how cheats work: * Client Hook: This allows the player to use a client-up loader or injector when the game is started. This then injects lines of code directly into the prgoram stored in the system's RAM which allows the game data that goes to the server to be manipulated directly in the memory. This bypasses the game altogether and does not permanently alter the files. * Hard-Coded Hack: The most straight forward of cheats; this replaces the game's files with modified ones that enable cheating. Usually the files replaced are .dll and config files. * Driver-Hacks: Open GL and Direct 3D files are altered so that game structures appear differently in-game. This allows for things such as wallhacks, transparent textures, wire frame models, etc. This also does not change any game files but rather the graphics driver only. As you can see a certain level of knowledge is required to achieve what would be considered a successful cheat. In visiting various cheat sites I found that most of the file makers have been doing this for quite a longtime. Most of them are much older than their cheating counter-parts. Surprisingly, some are even well past their mid-twenties or early thirties. Call me practical, but I think their talents would be better served working for the anti-cheat communities or game developers. Obviously they know the games and game engines and have a skill for code. These are the persons who could not only help stop cheaters by lending their knowledge, they could pre-test new games before being released. This could help find mistakes before release dates. Another function would be to work for the AC community by testing the AC in new games and engines to find possible holes that other coders and hackers might find. For those who think that they play in a game that is untouched by cheaters, here is an abbreviated list of some of the games that are listed with cheat file downloads at various cheat sites (these are all multiplayer cheats): AVP, FEAR, Halo, Swat4, AOE, AOM, Jedi Knight, AA, Blizzard Games, MU, Ragnarok, BF series, Maple Story, COD Series, RTCW, ET, MOHAA series, HL Series, JO, CS Series, SOF2, EVE Online, WOW, and more. On one of the cheat sites their member list had just reached a new high which they posted in their news on the front page: over 75,000 members. As a means of comparison I looked at the PunksBusted site: over 36,000 members. Not an encouraging comparison. |
