Ryan Gordon has stated he can no longer port AA for us Mac and Linux users for free (Ryan, I can't believe you did it as long as you did... a big thanks goes out to you). We all know where that leaves us. No native version. But does this mean the end unless we switch to Windows? I hope not. I intend to test the quality of Cedega for running AA. I've seen it run some pretty impressive games. If it can run AA, then that's how linux users can cope with the change. I'm betting some of you are like me: just because I can run Windows on my systems does not mean I ever would. So what does this have to do with the Mac? Hopefully you Mac users out there are aware that Mac OS X is a Mach 3.0 based kernel which included modified parts of FreeBSD UNIX. With the new shift to Intel processors, this might open a door for you as well. See, FreeBSD has "linux compatability" code. What this does is allow FreeBSD users to run linux programs out-of-the-box. I'm betting some geek out there is already working on getting linux x86 programs to run on Max OS X. Will it work? Is there enough FreeBSD left to work with to do that? Honestly, I don't know. But I betting I'm not the first to think "Hmmm.... Game -> Cedega -> Linux -> FreeBSD -> MacOS". Why? Because I have many friends with whom I've tried similarly bizarre sounding computer experiments just to see if we could. All I'm trying to say is, don't give up hope. Don't get your hopes too high, either, but the move Apple made to a UNIX core and the Intel platform will likely bring a lot of smart people with an itch to do just these kinds of things. |

Can't we also install Linux on macs? I am not sure but I think a friend of mine did this way back when the 800mhz G3 tower was the icon of the apple world. |

The problem with G4 and G5 processors is binary compatability. Future versions of AA will only be compiled to run on Intel x86, which would mean you'd have to run a CPU emulation layer (is it called VirtualPC on Mac?). That brings a _huge_ performance penalty. The other layers like Cedega for Windows to Linux conversion really just remap library calls, i.e. a DirectX call to map a texture on a surface (such as bricks on a wall) just get translated to the equivalent OpenGL call, then passed on as normal. This is a much lower performance hit. Running new AA versions on the PowerPC processor would probably not work well, if at all. I was focusing more on the new Intel based Macs. My bad, I should have been more specific. Do they still make the "Intel on a card" add ons to allow running native Windows/Intel programs on Macs? |

with the new intel macs, there is also the possibility to run bootcamp, so u can install windows xp. seen it runing on a mac mini, and it was smart (away from the part that it was windows, but ok). so there will be a chance to run aao on macs in the futur. thought i wont install win on my mac (or would u leave the devil in for nothing). if there wont be a mac versioin anymore adn tehre is no chance to run linux on the mac properly iŽll quit to play. no way to go for a pc. i get pickles by even touching one so we will see regards mac |

I think I generated some confusion here. Sorry for that. Here' what I think (hope) the future of AA will look like (assuming the Devs don't change thier mind and start porting again): AA will work on Intel x86 Windows (of course) AA will work on Intel based Macs running Windows AA will likely work on Intel x86 Linux (via Cedega/WineX) AA will likely work on Intel based Macs running Linux (via Cedega/WineX) AA might work on Intel based Macs running MacOS X (via Cedega/WineX) AA will not work on G3, G4, or G5 based Macs. For operating systems, The Intel based Macs will probably run Windows, linux, and MacOS (and programs for those OSs) perfectly fine. Does that make sense? |

Everybody needs to stop sounding like this is the end of the world for Macs. It's not like 2.5 is just gonna stop working or =Fas= is gonna end. We have not been with 2.6 users for the past several months and I'm perfectly fine with it. There are still plenty of players on 2.5 that are very dedicated and wont quit just because AA stops making new mac versions. 2.5 works great overall so there isn't much of a reason for new versions other than a few more maps but we dont even play on every map anyway so what's the difference? I agree that AA will probably work on Intel Macs and within a few months, there will be a lot more intel mac's out there in different versions and so people can get those if necessary. I'm not saying that you should go out and buy a new intel mac just for the sake of AA, but given time, you will need new computers anyway so we can get intel macs and catch up with the pc's. Maybe even after enough complants and support for more Mac versions, AA will realize the mistake they've made and start making more versions again or maybe even our own Mac version. Keep your hopes up and just remember that =Fas= will always be here. Everybody is family here so dont worry about those noobs on 2.6 |
