First of all the gear in order to use kendo. Posted Image The shinai. The shinai is perhaps the most important single piece of Kendo equipment. It is made up of four bamboo staves held together with several pieces of leather and held tight by a string (tsuru). It is very important that a shinai be properly maintained as neglect and lack of maintenance can make it prone to breaking (and hurting someone in the process). Posted Image The bokken The bokken, or bokuto (literally, "wooden sword"), is a hardwood sword used mainly for kata practice. Posted Image The Bogu The bogu is the special protective armor that is used for Kendo practice and sparring. Its main components are: Men: A helmet, made also to protect the shoulders and throat. Do: The main peice of armor, that protects the chest and stomach. Kote: Long, protective gloves. Tare: Waist armor Posted Image Posted Image hakama and kendogi A Kendo uniform is composed of the Kendogi (shirt) and Hakama (pants). All these equipment are used for practice or tournaments. the armor is optional since you'd look ridiculous walking around in a bogu and and hakama and kendogi. However if you go in a park just to show off, bring your equipment so you go all out. The Shinai is breakable. Take care of the tsuru and the leather straps. The tip is most likely gonna break so use the part below the tip. The Bokken is breakable. Dont swing too hard at an inanamate object or you may break the object or bokken. These weapons cannot cut ONLY BRUISE AND MAY CAUSE KNOCK OUTS AND DEATH. |
