Welcome to the "Uber Guild Wars Thread!" This thread is going to be a cross between a blog and a guide. Basically every now and then (probably ever day to once every two days) I will post a new in-depth look at part of the game. In the end, it will be sort of like a guide that explains each major part of the game. You all know (or should know) that I love Guild Wars, and I have been playing it for two years, so this is coming from a Guild Wars veteran! There are two main points in this that I want to accomplish:

1. Educate you further about Guild Wars and why I love it so much ;)

2. Perhaps persuade you to buy it! :D

So without any more of an intro....

Sunday, May 4th- Professions

In Guild Wars there are 10 professions. This breaks down into 6 core professions, available in all the games, and 2 professions each unique for Factions and Nightfall. Guild Wars: Eye of the North did not introduce any new professions as it is an expansion, unlike Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall.

Core Professions

Warrior- The warrior is the "tank" profession. They are the ones who will go right into the heart of the battle and stay there until it is won. They are focused more on surviving than dealing a lot of damage, though they certainly do their fair amount of damage.

Ranger- The Ranger uses bows, traps, and even pets to deal damage. They are also able to summon nature spirits to change the environment to their liking. Rangers are also used as the group "pullers." That is, pull a group of enemies to a safe place to attack where no other enemies will be aggrovated.

Elementalist- The elementalist is the classic RPG mage. They use the powers of fire, water, earth, and air to do their fighting. An elementalist will usually focus on one type rather than spred their attribute points over all of them. Fire is used to deal the most damage available in the game, water is used to slow down enemies, earth is used to increase the party's defenses, and air is used to blind enemies, thus making it nearly impossible for enemies to attack.

Mesmer- The mesmer uses their skills to hinder the opponets in other ways than strait-out damage. They can remove enemies' energy, cause massive amounts of health degeneration, and cause enemies to damage themselves.

Monk- In Guild Wars, there are no healing items. Instead, there is the monk. The monk's primary use is to heal the party, thus keeping them alive. They are also used to cast protection prayers. These will then help prevent damage being dealt in the first place, or remove conditions. Monks also use smiting prayers to attack enemies.

Necromancer- The necromancer is another profession which constists of many different play styles. The blood magic Necromancer steals health from their enemies to cause damage and heal themselves. The death magic Necromancers animates corpses and makes an army of undead to fight for them. The curses Necromancer is similar to the Mesmer profession.

Factions Professions

Assassin- The assassin uses daggers and chain attacks to charge into battle, spike the enemy with a lot of damage, and then retreat. The assassin also has a high critical hit rate to maximize the damage they do. They are also excellent blockers to minimalize how often they get hit. However, if they are hit they are very easy to kill.

Ritualists- The main focus of the Ritualist is to summon spirits to help fight for them, or help heal the party. Spirits can do a large variety of effects such as damage, causing knock-down, or minimalizing the amount of damage the party takes. Ritualists also use channeling to attack with lightning.

Nightfall Professions

Dervish- The dervish is a holy warrior who uses a scythe. They are able to deal a lot of damage, attack multiple enemies at once, and can also be very hard to kill. Dervishes are also able to take on the avatar form of one of the gods to give benefits in battle.

Paragon- The paragon is the motivational profession who aids the party in battle. They grant party bonuses, and can give attack bonuses. Paragons are also masters of the spear which they throw to harm enemies.

Monday, May 5th- Campaigns

Guild Wars is what I call a "super-game." That is, Guild Wars is actually made of three games which can full interact with each other, and do not require the purchase of one to play the others. Guild Wars also has an expansion which does require one of the campaigns to play.

Campaigns

Prophecies- The original game which went under the title of just "Guild Wars." Prophecies introduced the six core professions, and everything else which all the games can relate to. There are 24 missions in it which each have a primary and bonus objective. In it, players play as the hero of a ruined country called Ascalon. You must lead your people to safety after the Charr raze your kingdom with powerful magic. Once to safety, you help fight the undead menace ravaging Tyria.

Factions- The second game in the series, Factions brought an Asian look to the game. Factions also introduced the Assassin and Ritualist professions. Factions brought alliances and large scale alliance battles too, which have up to 10 guilds become allies and choose either the Kurzick or the Luxon faction. In the story, you fight through 13 missions to combat the ancient betrayer Shiro Tagachi from returning to Cantha and unleashing a plague.

Nightfall- Nightfall introduced heroes, and the professions of Dervish and Paragon. Heroes are much like the henchmen which are in the other games, except they level up with you and you are able to choose their skills, weapons, and armor. In the story, you fight through 20 missions and stop Varesh Ossa from unleashing the banished god Abaddon into Elona. As you play through the game, more and more areas fall into an effect of Abaddon call Nightfall, in which the land is corrupted.

Expansion

Eye of the North- Eye of the North is the first and only expansion to Guild Wars. EotN brought 18 multilevel dungeons, and a new story. In it, you must fight a race called the Destroyers from taking over all the land. This leads up to a final battle between you and the Great Destroyer, a servant of Primordius, one of the ancient dragons. Eye of the North bridges the gap between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. In the Eye of the North is an area called the Hall of Monuments, where you can keep records of your greatest accomplishments which will unlock items and titles in Guild Wars 2.
