I have two questions ab0out my creatures then.
Would Mecharipper still be acceptable? He can fire lasers from his eyes, but then again his eyes are just cameras with a laser mounted on them.

What about the Raptorlisk? It's based heavily off Starcraft's Hydralisk.

No, Hydrolisk DNA would not be legal. but if you put together the right DNA, you could prolly come up with something like that. ;)

Because Movies/Books/Video games can come up with some animals that are absolutely impossible, even if there could be a scientific explanation. The Balroc for instance from LOTR. I guess we could change that to Documentary, like something from The Future is Wild or Dragons: a Legend made Real, which are fiction but come up with some pretty good explanations for their animals.

Ah, such ignorance. Dragons: a fantasy made real, is pretty dang unscientific.

It may be unrealistic, but it comes up with good explanations for , if a dragon was real, How it would work.

Well, if the good explanations are analysed, as my friend taniwha has done,, we come up witth some serious hiccups. And in England, damn isn't a swear word.

Quote:

Many of you might know about the documentary Dragons: a Fantasy Made Real, which is about how dragons would had evolved if they existed. The makers said that they accurately made the dragons, to look as realistic as possible, having the aid of a famous paleoartist and expert animators. Oh really? Well, I've seen a lot of people posting in YouTube (where there are all parts of the documentary), claiming that the show is very inaccurate, for a huge number of reasons. I noted myself that many things don't make sense.

1. Dragon flight: in the show they give an interesting explanation about how an appearently heavy animal like a dragon can fly; they have flight bladders filled with hydrogen, produced by bacteria that live in their guts (all animals have bacteria to help digest food, so the makers of the documentary, which like to look smart, obviously had to make the bacteria in dragon stomach to produce an unusual gas and put it in the flight bladders, instead of coming out in farts like in most animals). In fact, in their site they even go as far as suggesting that the hydrogen in the bladders fills the bones as well, just like the air from bird's air sacks goes to their bones as well. This weird explanation is quite likely, but there's a little mistake; they claim, at a certain point, that dragon wings are smaller in comparation to the body size than bird, bat or pterosaur wings. Indeed, when looking at the Prehistoric Dragon you can tell its wings are quite skinny:

They claim that the flight bladders are so efficient reducing the body weight that they don't need large wings in order to fly. However, this doesn't actually make any sense; even with flight bladders and hollow bones filled with hydrogen, dragons are still heavy, specially because of their huge size (the prehistoric dragon is as big as a T-rex and the mountain dragon is very big as well), and due to the fact that, unlike birds and pterosaurs, which lost the heavy tails and teeth, dragons still have them. So dragons would have to have wider wings, in order to provide enough lift to keep them in the air; at least the mountain dragon seems to have right sized wings:

2. Breathing fire: it seems that the flight bladders are also used by dragons to breath fire; dragons appearently consume platinum, which reacts with hydrogen. However, there's some little problems with the way they breath fire in the documentary: like in all mythological dragons, they breath red/yellow/orange fire:

However, flames produced by hydrogen are blue; indeed, they show hydrogen produced flames, which are blue. In addition, dragons need platinum in order to breath fire; however, do you know how rare platinum is? Much more rare than gold! Therefore, most dragons wouldn't be able to breath fire, due to the rarity of this mineral, or there would be very few dragons in the world (which would make them too vulnerable to extinction). Also, in the documentary they claim that dragons have a false palate like crocodiles, which would prevent them from having their lungs burned; however, their guts and tongue would still be burned by fire. More likely dragons wouldn't breath fire at all; crocodiles and rhinos were also depicted as fire-breathing monsters in heraldy, and do they breath fire? Besides, dragons have talons and teeth, which are quite good weapons.

3. Six limbs: dragons are usually depicted with four legs and two wings, so such as remarkable trait couldn't be left out. This trait appearently started in marine dragons:

Later, this weird mutation would allow terrestrial dragons to develop wings and flight. However, while six limb vertebrates do exist (example: some chicks born with four legs), these are actually not mutations, but rather "siamese twins"; that is, these extra limbs resulted in an error that occured when the embryo was splitting so, instead of two twins, we have a baby with extra limbs. Not only they can't move these limbs (they simply hang imobile), but they also won't pass this amazing feature to the next generation. Therefore, dragons would either have four legs, two legs and two wings, or four flippers. Indeed, many dragons are depicted as four limbed, such as the wyverns and the chinese dragons. Sadly, only the prehistoric dragon has four limbs in the documentary, and that line disappeared alongside dinosaurs. One more inaccuracy, since dragons, if they existed, would be four limbed.

4. Warm or cold blooded?: in Dragons: a Fantasy Made Real it is never mentioned if dragons are warm-blooded or cold-blooded. However, there are two clues:

1. Both marine dragons and mountain dragons have a protein in the blood similar to that of antartic fish, which prevents them from freezing; only cold blooded animals have that, since warm blooded ones can keep their body temperature high enough to avoid die of cold

2. Dragons are egg layers; like in crocodiles and turtles, dragons babies don't have yet sex chromossomes while inside the eggs, so they only become male or female depending on the temperature the egg was incubated in. This feature is absent in modern warm blooded vertebrates.

Being cold blooded, an animal couldn't possibly fly, because only a warm blooded metabolism could provide enough energy for powered flight (even if dragons were simply soarers they would still need to take off in their own power).

Saidi, you're not stupid. You know that each of those is easily corrected. Bigger wings, FIXED. Using a much easier to find metal and possibly changing the gas, FIXED. Add thick skin or remove the nerves from the tounge and throught so they would'nt feel the pain, FIXED. Make it warm blooded, FIXED. While the show might not be 100% correct, we could change the facts with ease if we were using this as a base.

Saidi, are you complaining about the use of Dragon DNA? well then, we don't have to have it then, do we? The only reason I suggested we use Dragon DNA is because a lot of people would want to have Fire/Ice breathing animals.

But that's some very interesting Information, Saidi.

A number of animal combo's would get the result of a dragon, but this seems easier then listing ten animals in its place.

not all dragons can fly.look at the friggin` lindworm!all it is is a giant snake with a dragon head and front legs.so it won`t have a flight bladder.dragons are`nt proven real yet, wich means we do not know enough information about them, and we have never or barley see them.or no one has seen them and survived.but,as i said before, dragons are not proven fake, either.scientists do not know enough information to prove either.so were is the profe dragons are fake?were is the proof that they are`nt?

all i can say besides that is,

i believe in dragons.

oh,and i almost forgot.

Dr.cool has a dragon monster,so it can`t be that bad,can it?

Well, as far as I can see, the only proper way of fire breathing, without removing taste is Reign Of Fire style.

And I don't mind you swearing. In fact I don't givwe a flying t*ss if you go effing and blinding your way in an explicit raampge across the forum. :D

No, he was a bit annoyed with something I think.

Odd that buggeer is not a swear word. It's quite rude in the UK.
Also, in good old blighty, Arse isn't a swear word. In fact, it's quite a commonplace word.
