In general, my team doesn't take care of bulky Steel-types not weak to Ground-type moves that well. I gotta find a way to fix that. I'm thinking of swapping Azumarill for Conkeldurr, still with Assault Vest. Any two cents about my team, DG and others? |

Well, even with Conkeldurr, your team was rather fragile, with nothing that can really switch in on anything other then a resisted hit. You kinda need a fully fledged wall. You could replace Mamoswine with Skarmory, who's got better bulk, can still set up hazards, also has sturdy, and also has the ability to phase people out. That reminds me, your team is also pretty weak to setup sweepers. Something like DD Gyarados can basically sweep your entire team after a single DD. Also, so THAT'S what your Azumarill was holding! I thought it might've been a BellyJet set, hence why I taunted it. |

... Ohmygosh I completely forgot about Skarmory. I was contemplating replacing my Stealth Rock user, though. Seems like it's down to either Leftovers/Rocky Helmet Skarmory or Air Balloon Excadrill. As for setup sweepers, having bulkier Pokemon will help, but I think better prediction play will help as well. At least, if I want to utilize Crobat as another answer to setup sweepers. |

Sounds like that was an interesting (if one-sided) battle! Very glad to hear Mega Beedrill has lived up to expectations as a sweeper. On the matter of Skarmory vs Excadrill, first I'll make the friendly reminder that Excadrill can get Iron Head again thanks to the tutors. I've got one sitting trained but unused due to lack of Iron Head on X that I would just love to transfer over. With Excadrill you can have a hazard setter and spinner (if that is your wish) all in one that can dish out some strong hits too. Skarmory on the other hand doesn't hit as hard and can't spin, but instead has better defensive/staying power and Whirlwind. I might suggest Donphan too as being able to fill a defensive setter/spinner role. Compared to the similar Excadrill, not being part Steel is a bit of a trade off in weaknesses and resistances. However, not needing an Air Balloon let's you give it Leftovers and I think ultimately makes it more defensive, and sort-of a halfway point between Skarmory's defense and Excadrills' use and power. It's speed isn't great, but Ice Shard is a priority option that, while not powerful in itself, does hit a lot of things for SE. Throw on Earthquake and there's your moveset. I used one (thought not with SR since tutors) and it was always an awesome wall/beast. I will admit though, even if you ditched SR or RS for a third attack, Donphan doesn't have the best type coverage. That said, neither do the other two with their usual competitive movesets. In fact, a Skarmory versus an Excadrill in a fight would not be too fun for either side. I guess my last pitch for Donphan is that at least has a good STAB in Earthquake, and anything flying (save Skarmory) or Flygon is going to have to take Ice Shard into consideration. Really, I think anything Donphan can't hit is for the most part something it wouldn't want to stay in against anyway. Quick-ish update of my progress; Sunday was spent finishing my Lanturn's training and looting the eastern sea routes. Yesterday I finished off the sea route and went and did the whole fight Team Aqua and Kyogre thing. One-shoted every member of Archie's team; only attack he got off was a completely useless (but kind-of hilarious) Mean Look from his Crobat. Then on about either the fifth or sixth reset I finally got Kyogre on the second Premier Ball (ever since I caught Reshiram in one back in W2, I've made it a tradition to catch legendaries in Premier Balls). Why one earth did they give that thing AQUA RING though? Dangit! At least with Groudon and Rest it goes to sleep and you can hit it hard and it's asleep. With Kyogre and Aqua Ring, I had to wait until it was back up to having enough HP that I didn't just KO it, making any attempts to catch it in the meantime less and less likely. Plus, the only thing on my team it couldn't just one-shot if it wanted was my Lanturn, who to be fair tanked those Origin Pulses really darn well. Makes me very glad I didn't opt to use a Wailmer/lord like I was almost tempted to try, Kind of irks me though, all the hyping the NPCs do about how powerful it is. Is it powerful? Yes; as I said it had a ability to one-shot any member of my teams except the one that double resists it STAB, and my team were all higher-leveled than it! But we've all fought enough legendaries to know that against a full team of pokemon who aren't underleveled, a single, lone legendary is completely screwed in a full-out battle. The ACTUAL hard part -as again we all know- is trying NOT to KO it, not TO BE KOed yourself, and ultimately cram the bugger into a tiny little ball. But do the NPCs ever say "It'll be hard to catch"? No. They say "it'll be hard to beat/defeat/kill/whatever", which, quite frankly, isn't at all hard to do in the slightest! It's not a big thing, it just irks me. So, uh, after that I one-shoted all of Wallace's team, caught a Drifloon that looked a lot like a bird in flight, and now I'm trying to catch a Mespirit with a good nature. Seeing as it, unlike certain legendaries, isn't a rear end that keeps healing itself in the slowest way possible. I've actually determined/discovered that my Seviper can survive an Extrasensory if needed and get off Glare, and then two Sludge Waves (which I'm usually able to get off before getting KOed) put it's HP right in the range I want it. Case in point of how easy it is, I've caught it three times this morning already. I'm starting to worry though if I really should have stuck with the Na?ve one I got the first time, since the two I got after it were Lonely and Adamant... Ah, and as for where my team is at level-wise, my Seviper's Lv.51, and the rest are Lv.52. Still got Ever Grande/Victory Road to go before E4. |

Donphan is more of a tank, though. Hippowdon outclasses it as a fully defensive groud type, due to having Slack Off as well as Roar. And as an offensive Rapid Spinner, Excadrill surpasses it, partially because of how hard it can be to spin block. Many of the popular Ghost types are wither weak to EQ, or take neutral damage from it. Or to put it another way, if you bring in your Gengar, trying to block a Rapid Spin, you end up getting one shot. Also, Skarmory gets Defog through Pokebank, as well as having Brave Bird on the offensive department. And how did you catch Mesprit? When I go to to the appropriate portal it doesn't let me enter, even when I fulfill the requirements. Same thing goes for the portal that leads to Unova's bovines... |

1: Last I checked, tank in game terms did mean fully defensive. 2: Excuse you, those are the muskedeers, not cows. I bet all ungulates look the same to you, don't they? Racist. As for my 2 cents about having a defensive mon, I've never actually used |

1: In pokemon, a fully defensive thing is usually referred to as a wall, whist a tank is more of a beefy attacker. 2: Well, first of all, not all bovines are cows. Second, Terrakion is clearly a bovid. So, I really had not idea what to call them.

1: In more RPG terms, tank is the party member who absorbs damage. That's usually called a wall in Pokemon, but they are identical functionally and I've never heard anyone refer to anything with a different purpose as such. 2: Overall though they're more deers, even Terrakion has deer features. The only one that isn't a deer is Keldeo, a unicorn... kelpie... kirin... horse thing. |

1: I know that, but in the Pokemon community, I've yet to see someone refer to a wall as a tank. 2: Well whatever. To be fair, I also forgot that deer weren't bovines. Anyway, watching some of DKD's videos, I just thought that we should totally have a free for all battle someday. |

Wall: Chansey Tank: Rhyperior They serve SIMILAR purposes, but they differ in how they help the team. Rhyperior helps by tanking hits and firing back with earth shattering Earthquakes and Stone Edges. Chansey helps out by statusing enemies, keeping the rest of the team healthy, and just sticking around for a long time and being a nuisance. Right now, I'm working my way through the Delta Episode, currently soft resetting for a good IV'd Rayquaza. After learning about how god damned broken he is, I decided that I must have him. My current ingame team is: Swampert Manectric Aggron Camerupt Salamence and Breloom. I searched for that breloom with the dexnav for about 2 days. You'd be surprised how rare the combination of 1 particular egg move and a hidden ability can be. But, needless to say, my Bullet Seed Technician Breloom has been a huge powerhouse on my team for the majority of my game, along with my Rock Head/Head Smash aggron. I really enjoy the dexnav if any of you couldn't tell. I'd be happy to join in on this influx of battles among members as soon as I finish up this fantastic game and breed a new team. |

@Gengar: ...Er, levitate, remember? Not that a Donphan is going to be doing any better in that situation either, mind you. @Skarmory: If you've got Defog on Skarmory, though, you won't be using it as a setter/phazer. Brave Bird gives Skarmory a good attack option, yes, but that doesn't make it particularly offensive. @Tank/Wall: I would generally agree with DM's example, but they are very close terms and there are some pokemon that could potentially be called either. Some tanks can be very wall-ish, and some walls rather tank-y. Anyway... And... I just beat the league. Took down the E4 last night, beat Steven this morning. With my team all at Lv.55 I started my challenge. Sidney got of a few moves by virtue of speed or priority, but his entire team got one-shoted. The other three still got one-shoted in some case, but generally they had at least a couple things that needed two shots. Still went down all the same and reasonably easy either way, but at least they put up some fight. Now, the battle with Steven... Round 1; Seviper vs. Skarmory I knocked it into the red with a Flamethrower and ate a Steel Wing. Steven used a Full Restore, but two more Flamethrowers did it in. Round 2; Armaldo vs. Aggron Long story short, I Earthquaked it twice, and it got in a pretty nice Stone Edge. Next. Round 3: I started off with my Wigglytuff and Shadow Ball, but Claydol put up I Light Screen. I sent in my Swellow and tried Brave Bird, but didn't have quite enough power for a KO. Steven Full Restore'd, and it started to turn into a stall-out. He threw up a Reflect, but hey, I've got Boomburst. I used Double Team a couple times, a Hyper Potion, and wore his Claydoll down with Boombursts until finishing it with a Brave Bird. Round 4; Lanturn vs. Armaldo I left my Swellow in since it's evasion was up, but it ended up landing a Rock Blast on the first try. My Lanturn took it out with Surf, ultimately. Round 5; Armaldo vs. Cradilly I...forget exactly what I did but I KOed it! I know I sent out my Armaldo first, landed an X-Scissor, but then got KOed by Ancient Power. I think I then took it out with Seviper's Sludge Wave. Round 6; ... The big event, Mega Sceptile vs. Mega Metagross. Not really a good type match-up, but fitting! I survived a Giga Impact with 6 HP, healed and survived a Bullet Punch, then got taken down by another Giga Impact. During that time I'd got its HP down to half. And, with MegaGross recharging from Giga Impact, my Seviper had a clear shot to finish it off with Flamethrower. Overall, everyone on my team got a piece of the action through the League. Seviper was probably the MVP, seeing as between Flamethrower and Dark Pulse he was SE against three of the Elites as well as Steven. My Swellow tried to get in against Phoebe, but I pulled it back out after the first Ice Punch from her Dusknoir. Still ended up playing a pretty big role against Steven, though! Wigglytuff did much of the work against Drake, and also got a few KOs in elsewhere, such as Phoebe's Sableye. Armaldo pulled his weight against Glacia and did the bulk of sweeping out Sidney. Lanturn turned up here and there to take stuff out. I kinda screwed up against Drake with him when, after taking out Drake's first Flygon and getting hit with a screech, I kind-of maybe forgot his weakness to Earthquake. Heh. Sceptile didn't come into play much, but when he did it was usually against a big-ish threat and he delivered the KO. So now it's Delta Episode time for me. I don't care what the plot actually is, I will still maintain the personal belief that the reason the asteroid changed course is because of Misty's F-bomb. (No, not the gym leader Misty, you silly.) |

@Gengar: Excadrill's Mold Breaker nullifies Levitate, you know. @Skarmory: Well, if you run Defog, you can still run either Stealth Rocks or Whirlwind. Also, I never thought I'd hear anyone say Seviper being an MVP. Then again, I never thought Beedrill would be sweeping an OU team either. |
