This is the greatest RTS game of all time, and probably one of the greatest games of all time. Collect treasures and battle bugs with tiny adorable plant creatures called pikmin. This game was my life 7 years ago.

It's more worth getting the second game, since there's no day limit and it has more colors of pikmin. Incidentally, the Wii port for the second game was released just a few days ago.

But the 3rd game, for Wii U, was revealed at E3 last week. (TRAILER, DEMO) Here's a rundown of what we know so far:

  • Two new types of pikmin, Rock Pikmin and Pink Pikmin. Rock Pikmin are like purples in that they can be thrown to stun enemies, but the downside is that they can't latch onto them. They're also good for breaking strong gates and destroying armor on enemies. Pink Pikmin are mostly unknown and are only seen briefly in the trailer, but they seem to be capable of flight.
  • FOUR controllable captains. One captain can throw another captain as he would a pikmin.
  • Pikmin now build bridges by piecing them together out of nearby objects.
  • More specific targeting - now you can throw pikmin at specific areas on a monster's body, like eyes or armor.
  • You can play either with the Wii U controller (using more gamecube-like controls), or with the Wiimote & nunchuk. The Wii U controller will have a minimap on its touchscreen.
  • New challenge/2P mode, involving collecting fruit.

Also, new enemies

  • A white bulborb that eats pikmin at long range with an anteater-like tongue.
  • Armored Mawdad: one of the bosses, a giant centipede that runs along the walls of an arena at high speed; you must break its armor with rock pikmin.
  • Medusal Slurker, a jellyfloat-like creature that sucks pikmin up and turns them into rock pikmin.
  • A sort of flying centipede-like creature.
  • A slug-like creature that sets pikmin on fire and leaves a trail of magma.
  • Skitter Leaves with colors depending on the season, that now attack pikmin.
  • A bipedal insect that picks up pebbles and is seemingly harmless.
  • Spider-like creatures that walk on water.
  • A sort of squid that lives in the water and poisons blue pikmin with ink.

Seems great so far, but I'm a little worried that there might not be caves, or purple or white pikmin. They probably just weren't shown at E3.
If you ask me, the fact that there are four captains is as good an indication as any that this is going to be a much, much bigger game than the previous two. LOTS more to do, more treasures and enemies and such. And bigger maps, I hope.

If anyone knows any more info, feel free to post it.

Heh heh, I was going to post about P3 but I'm too lazy. :P

Personally, I don't like the mawdad, it just doesn't fit in with Pikmin's style.

That's what I thought, it looks like it was made in Spore. But I'm glad they're adding more strategy to beating enemies than just hammering the A button and whistling.

As far as enemies from previous games go, I think we could all do without, say, the Waterwraith. But there are some that this game simply MUSTN'T go without...like that stroke of pure Nintendo brilliance that was the Man-at-Legs.

I haven't played any of the games, but if I had the system for it I'd certainly give Pikmin a try.

Oh YES. I'm a giant pikmin fan, but of course I missed Nintendo's E3 conference. If nothing else, getting the WiiU will be worth it for just this game.

The Wii U is coming out in November... and Pikmin 3 has been confirmed as a launch title. <3

@KCS: IMO Man At Legs will be seriously easier with rock pikmin, I thought about it a while ago. The biggest reason its so tough is that it has a metal shell (thus an insane amount of health), but rock pikmin are ment to destroy armor.

Well in case anyone cares its already out in Japan and is coming out in Europe on Saturday. I forget the American release date. :P

Apparently, there are six bosses, but several minibosses.

The first boss is the Armored mawdad, The second is the Vehemoth Phosbat, the third is the Sandbelching Meerslug, the fourth is the Scornet Maestro (translated name), the fifth is the Swamp Storm (translated name) and the final boss's translation makes no sense and I don't want to spoil it anymore. :P

Also, Purples and Whites are only in Mission Mode (the equivalent of Challenge Mode). I can't say I'm very happy about this...

From the looks of it, Almost all of the enemies from the old games are gone. The Wollywog, for instance, is completely absent, though the yellow wollywog is there. For some reason they opted to keep Skitter leaves, yet bulbmin are absent.

The only boss from the past games is the Snagret, and even then its just a mini-boss.

Also, the Numaarashi is called the Quaggled mireclops apparently.

IMO, most of the bosses don't really fit into the Pikmin Universe. The Quaggled Mireclops, for instance, is more like some Legend of Zelda monster, and the Vehemoth Phosbat is clearly a vertebrate, but has 8 limbs. Same with the Mawdad, except obviously it has many more legs.

Several enemies don't even have to be fought to beat the game, for instance, you never have to fight the Bulbear unless you want %100.

Ultra Bitter Spray is gone, though it was probably too powerful anyways. However, there is absolutely nothing preventing collection of Ultra Spicy Spray, because both the mold and whiskerpillars are gone. honeywhisps, IMO one of the iconic species, are gone, along with nectar grass and nectar rocks. The main sources of nectar now are eggs and a giant dragonfly creature that is the replacement for the honeywhisp.

Don't take me wrong, I'm sure it will be a great game, but its just too different from the other two titles. I honestly think they may have rushed it.

I guess they wanted to make the game fresh by replacing the old wildlife with new ones, but some of the preliminary reviews are saying that the story is too short. It's getting more or less the same scores as the previous game, so I guess it'll be a hit, but I'm just hoping for something I can spend a lot of time on.

EDIT: And I'm hearing from some people on tumblr that they've eliminated swarming. That's...going to take getting used to.

It's beginning to sound to me like Miyamoto and crew were aiming more for the newcomers to the franchise than us longtime fans. It makes sense, but...
