Before reading that article, I was going to say something to the effect of either "brb crying self to sleep" or "Alas, poor killer canary, I hardly knew ye". Now that I have, though, I'm not too sure. There was 2 pieces of evidence that this is based on. First and foremost, the short legs and lack of large claws, which would've likely prevented it being able to keep up with its prey, and hold it. Well, that's assuming it was the type of animal to run down food. It could've ambushed its prey, taking it out in short order with a blow to the head. Which brings me to the other bit of evidence, the lack of a hooked beak. Need I remind you that this same body shape has evolved in birds three times in history? Other than Gastornis, there was also the Phorusrhacids, and the oft-forgotten Dromornithids, the latter of which also lack hooked beaks. Admittedly, yes, it's not known for sure if Dromornithids were carnivorous, but it's a generally accepted idea, and if the Australian ducks can eat meat, why can't the European ones? At the very least, I suspect they were like hippos. If you looked at a hippo's tusks, you'd imagine the were predators. Yet we've known for centuries that they were herbivores- except, wait, they've been known to eat meat as well. |

I very much agree with CW. Just because it likely wasn't a chaser doesn't mean it couldn't ambush. And I'm pretty sure you don't need a hooked beak to beat up some little rat-horse stuff that was around back then. IMO, more evidence is required, like maybe gasthroliths. |

Because they are uncultured ****s. Alternatively they don't give half a crap & went with the name that sounded cooler. |

Now let's take a look at the evidence that suggests it was a carnivore. Head: Ostriches don't have giant heads. Prey: If there is one thing we know, it's that it's prey rather small. Raptors need hooked claws and beaks because they hunt things their size. Gastornis was one of the largest creatures on Earth at it's time. It's prey was far from. Size: Just as I said above, Gastornis was huge. This woulc mean it would be a perfect scavenger, because no sane predator is gonna put it's dinner before it's life. And if there is a fight, Gastornis most likely wins. Being a walker is no evidence to suggest something ate plants. I'm not even sure whether I should continue. |

Belive you me, Flish, I wouldn't have been able to do it if it wasn't a bird. Between woodpeckers & great tits & the alternative name for roosters & the various species of booby, they really are the most perverse group of animals. |

I'm on the fence at the mome, but I do know a hook on the bill can easily just be a part of the keratinous sheath rather than the bony core. The validity of the discovery depends on whether or not the tracks belong to Gastornis. That's it. (I would prefer it be not, not only because it would save the notion of the badass killer bird we know and love, but because it would indicate the presence of an entirely new, undiscovered herbivorous giant bird.) |
