Bah! SD, you little chicken ninja you!
Anyways, here is my elaborated rant about SD's idea before I saw he ninja'd me:
I¡¦m not very good at this kind of thing, but perhaps what could work would be to make a saw that is attached to some very strong and tough muscles that have a very high healing property and are constantly renewing themselves, as well as having large surface are of articular cartilage to make for a smooth surface that doesn¡¦t damage easily. The muscles propel the saw forward very quickly and efficiently, with about as much effort as moving your knee. Now, these muscles are quite flexible, but even they begin to strain after a while. Once it internally feels the straining start to begin, it stops pushing forward. From there, the muscles naturally start to unwind, quickly picking up momentum from its slick surface, making the saw spin backwards at a very high speed in the opposite direction. From there, the process keeps repeating, with the creature increasing the power of the spin as it needs. I¡¦m not sure if that will work, but I hope I¡¦ve helped. ƒº

Maybe, but I'm not sure you could twist any muscle around as many times as you'd need to get a high, good velocity going.

Possibly something like a bike using some sort of internal arm to propel it, or moving it like a water wheel with blood are the only two ideas I can thing of that wouldn't involve muscles having to be twisted until they broke.

Maybe instead of being a a spinning saw, what about it being more like a hand saw, with muscle twitches rapidly moving the saw blade back and forth?

That idea sounds awesome. In the event it doesn't, perhaps the mechanics behind gears and tank treads can give an answer? Just theorizing.

This is a fine source of inspiration for biological innovation. I will always be reminded of this creature for my future creations.

You guys are over thinking this. The saw would detach from the body as the creature gets older, held in place by a sort of an organic bar. Like a wheel on an axle.

Then for rotation it's as simple as this:

Posted Image

You blow air over the saw, which (while still sharp) is similarly shaped to the windmill to that it catches air. Boom, rotation.

Not really. A human with a lungful of air can send those things spinning quite fast. Imagine what a large beast with specially designed lungs could do.

I think using something like that, it would be more efficient to use it like a water-wheel instead of a pinwheel. Maybe have a second heart in the head/neck that would pump out high-pressure blood. Then a muscle contracts, opens a valve, and the blood could push the thing nicely since its psi would be so high.

Also then it can shoot the excess blood out of its not-eyes.

The problem I see with that is that the system would have to be air tight to avoid the blood leaking out. With the serrations on the saw, I'm not quite sure how you could do that.

The next problem I see is that fact that it seems like with using actual blood that there would be a huge risk of contaminating said blood. In short; blade spins, cuts through stuff, spins back into the blood, and carries bits of the stuff it just cut into the blood.

I'm imagining something more like a high-powered hose opening up and shooting the blood (or really any fluid at all. Could just be water), at something like the paddles on a water wheel. The blood shot out would just leave the body.

However, I don't think a desert creature could have that much extra fluid, so the pinwheel idea might be better.
