Name: Marshsnapper (Hoplichthys polycanthus) Height: 5 Inches Length: 3 feet Weight: 30 kilograms Base DNA: Northern pike, Patagonian toothfish, spiny lobster, pogge, white sturgeon Abilities: Swimming, biting Weaknesses: Armour can be cracked quite easily, fairly small, slow swimmer, fins and lower jaw are not armoured Defences: Armour, teeth Special Attributes: Can breathe underwater Description: A Patagonian toothfish with the pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins of a pike. It lacks anal and adipose fins. Every part of its body, except its fins and lower jaw, is covered in pogge armour. It has spiny lobster spines along its back and sturgeon scutes along its sides. It is dark brown in colour, with dark green markings. LOGI Info: Marshsnappers are small predators that live in swamps, marshes and lakes, using their cryptic colouration to hide among rocks and water plants. They live in small shoals of about 10 to 20. Their diet consists of small fish, amphibians, invertebrates and the occasional small bird of mammal. They will sometimes attack large prey in a group, but since their teeth are not designed for tearing flesh, they rarely do too much damage. Many piscivores of Genome Island feed on them. It is fairly easy for a large creature to bite through their armour, but it protects them from predators their size or smaller. Marshsnappers travel to special breeding pools in the spring, where the females will release their eggs. They can lay up to 20,000 eggs at a time. These will then be fertilised by the males. The adults leave after breeding, leaving their eggs lying at the bottom of the pool. The eggs are nutritious and have a savoury flavour that is attractive to many creatures. A lot of the eggs are eaten before hatching. After a week, the fry will hatch, and immediately take shelter among reeds and mud. At this stage of their lives, they are about 2 inches long and feed on tiny invertebrates, such as water fleas, moving onto larger prey as they grow. Other: -------------------- |
