![]() Name (of creature): Nightsprite (Lunavolaris passer) Height: Standing, the nightsprite is 6 - 8 inches tall at the hip. Length: average 18 inches Wingspan: average 26 inches Weight: 9 ounces Base DNA: Barn owl, freshwater stingray, nurse shark, luna moth, Eastern newt, gulper eel, lampeye, various jellyfishes, little brown bat Abilities: They glow in the dark, and are also able to echolocate. Flight, obviously, this is a volant animal and a very agile one at that, aided by large gas bladders that make up much of its abdomen, as well as its hollow, lightweight skeleton of cartilage. Defenses: The animal is covered wholly in a mildly toxic and incredibly bitter mucous which causes numbness in the mouth of the animal that attempts to eat it, largely discouraging predation (though certain creatures seem immune or indifferent to its effects). In the event it is attacked, it also carries sharp talons and a bite filled with tiny, needle-like teeth. Special Attributes: This small creature's most notable feature is its bioluminescence, which is almost constant and used to communicate, both to others of its species and to predators, by flashing in various shades. Description: A kestrel-sized, glowing blue salamander with the hind limbs of a bird of prey, large seemingly pupil-less eyes, and unusual wings not unlike the "wings" of a sting ray. On the animal's tail are two sensitive tentacles, used to detect pheromones, wind directions, and other environmental data; these are similar to a moth's antennae. LOGI Info: These are very rare and elusive animals of tropical forests and woodlots, at night venturing often quite far into the open but always returning to woodland to sleep during the day. They are carnivores, though not big ones, and eat mainly flying insects as well as small birds and bats snatched on the wing with a surprisingly large, extendable jaw. Nightsprites are largely solitary, though on warm, humid evenings in early summer males and females alike congregate in enormous breeding swarms over still pools of water and mate, dropping their small, gelatinous eggs by the thousands into the water. Animals spend the first few years of their lives as axolotl-like larvae before finally moulting into their adult forms in their third or fourth year. These animals are generally very passive and timid towards humans and larger animals and pose little threat to anything larger than a finch or a mouse. Other: During the spring, male nightsprites emit low, haunting calls that an echo over the land for miles, sounding much like agonized wailing. If thoroughly cleaned and washed of its mucous, the flesh of a nightsprite is delicious, reminiscent of catfish, and is excellent fried. The nightsprite is difficult to catch, however, being extremely timid of humans as well as very agile in the air. |
