Name: Resothanator

Height: 30 feet

Length: 40 feet

Weight: 35 tons (This feels like the carnival game where you guess someone's weight, and DG is the carnie)

Base DNA: Blue whale, howler monkey, New Guinea singing dog, dusky dolphin, grizzly bear, Townsend's big-eared bat, Lambeosaurus, coconut, swallowtail butterfly, walrus, Chasmosaurus

Abilities: Able to use sound and resonance as a weapon, decently intelligent, claws, incredible hearing

Weaknesses: Can't breathe in low-oxygen environments, slow, takes some time to find natural frequencies of target, blind, tunnel vision when its focusing on a spot to shoot at, turns slowly.

Defenses: Beneath the skin of a Resothanator is a layer of blubber that is typically around two feet thick. This acts as a defense against attack and also as a means of damping the sounds that the Resothanator produces so that it itself doesn't get shaken to pieces. Its skin is also covered in a viscous layer of coconut oil to further aid in damping. The tubes and resonating chambers are very hard and can act similar to a ceratopsian's frill, protecting the brain and neck.

Most of the Resothanator's sound attack doesn't can't be heard by it's own ears, but it does receive some reflections that can get loud. To deal with this there is a second, tougher membrane protecting the eardrums that damps some of the very loud sounds the Resothanator puts out to make them less loud. This membrane comes down automatically through the sympathetic nervous system when the sound attack is being used and goes back up when it's not to allow quieter sounds to get in easier. Akin to how some animals have a nictitating membrane over their eyes, but this is for ears.

Special Attributes: The entirety of the sound weapon is mounted on top of the head. First the Resothanator opens up the three large pipes mounted behind its head. These are normally kept closed as a sealed system with no air inside (except in the case of echolocation which is explained below). Once these are opened air rushes in to fill the void, travelling first through the tube and then into the resonating chamber and finally out through the dish at the front of its face. This dish is able to focus the sound to a very specific area. The mechanisms inside the system work similarly to how baleen whales produce sound that can hit up to 188 decibels and these are also the mechanisms used to modulate the frequency of the sound. The resonating chambers and head-tubes are used to further increase the noise up to some 240 decibels when operating at max power.

It breaths through the use of spiracles, small holes (about a foot in width) placed all across the skin of the Resothanator that take in air and put it into tracheae, which eventually put the oxygen into the blood stream and then dispose of the CO2 through the spiracles again. The spiracles can open and close.

To remove all the air from the system when it's not in use the chambers will compress using thin muscles that surround the inside of the chambers and push air out through the dish. This removes most of the air, but the rest is removed much slower through active uptake by cells. However the Resothanator is essentially always using some of the system to see through echolocation. The tube on the top of the Resothanator has a line of specialized spiracles that run down its top and grow smaller as they get further from the tip.. These can be opened and closed to allow more or less air to enter the tube and also to further control frequency. In echolocation usually the first few holes are kept open and directed directly towards the dish (the rest of the system is closed off and a second pathway opens that leads the air directly out) so that they can be shot towards what the Resothanator wants to get a look at. These sound waves go out and then bounce back and are easily picked up by the beast's massive and incredibly sensitive ears. This information can be processed in the brain to find the natural frequency of a part of another monster or a part of the terrain.

Once the natural frequency of an object has been found the Resothanator will target it at the frequency. All objects have a natural frequency or set of frequencies they vibrate at and by shooting an object with sound waves at this frequency the Resothnator can cause the object to vibrate more and more. Different parts of a body have different natural frequencies so something can't be ripped apart just by shooting at it in general (Unless it is a small creature, like a swarm). Furthermore bodies are wet and mushy and act as natural dampers, so it requires a very loud blast of sound to rip them apart. Operating at max loudness or 240 decibels a human could be literally shaken to jelly, but most monsters would not be. Instead the Resothanator will either target specific body parts or the terrain. Eyeballs and limbs are very common targets. The first is very small and essential and the brain will usually be damaged and the eardrums will burst in the process of exploding them. The second is usually not very well damped and it severely immobilizes the prey. Even if the Resothanator isn't able to shake the limb to pieces, the damage to joints would essentially make the limb unusable.

Another option is to send sound waves through the ground which can cause unsteady monsters to topple easily and for whole creatures to vibrate due to the waves being passed into the body through the skeleton. In a smaller creature this will literally shake them apart, while in a large one this can cause bone and joint damage as well as severe nausea and vision loss. Effects also depend on how well-damped a creature is. If it's thinner and smaller than effects will be more damaging. This can affect the Resothanator as well, though not as much since it is sturdy, well damped, and the waves are being shot away from it. Using this is a frequent desperation move, since it doesn't require finding the natural frequency of a creature, but of the ground.

The main weakness behind the sound attack is that very fast moving creatures are harder to focus on and harder to find frequencies for. The usual solution for this is to shoot the sound waves into the ground, which will slow them and potentially trip them, but this isn't as effective if it's not directed right at a creature.

Resothanators have about the intelligence of dolphins and are able to coordinate attacks and change strategies in a situation. Occasionally they will even cause avalanches, rock slides, or trees to fall to stun or even kill prey in an ambush.

The dish is able to become more or less concave through the contraction of muscles. When it is focusing its weapon the muscles are uncontracted and allow it to focus on a particular spot, but when the Resothanator is just moving around and hunting, the muscles are contracted and allow it a much wider picture of the world.

Description: It's body and limbs are shaped like a grizzly bear's however it is covered in thick layer of blubber and walrus skin. Spiracles dot it's body, but are covered by a thin membrane that prevents matter from clogging up the breathing. Where the head of the bear would be is a massive contraption that consists of three massive tubes derived from Lambeosaurus crests, three matching resonance chambers (like big, hardened gas sacs), a pair of huge bat ears, and a sort of radio dish that acts like a parabolic loudspeaker, derived from a Chasmosaurus frill. A trunk-like butterfly mouth is just below this.

LOGI Info: Resothanators are solitary and highly aggressive animals that can be found across many habitats, but are most common in tundras and taigas. They are voracious predators that can feed only on liquids or small chunks of meat sucked in through their butterfly proboscis. After prey is immobilized or killed the Resothanator will continue to shake its body to help liquefy it and make it easier to digest. The only time Resothanators will come together is in the mating season where males compose incredibly loud and complex songs to attract females. These songs can sometimes be heard up to a hundred miles away. Gestation is very long and females usually only have a few babies in their lifetime.

I think that I've thought of a monster that can make other monsters explode. Physics is fun.

Well they can't quite explode, unless it's small or Gummy. Eyeballs can probably explode. I really tried not to make this too overpowered, I mean this thing could potentially have taken out anything by literally bursting lungs, so I tried to tone it down. Against little swarms, yeah maybe still a little OP. You may need to know a few science-y terms to get some of this stuff, i.e. damping and natural frequency. Also it smells like coconuts.

Now make a monster with a giant tooth-grill. :P

Also this thing is going to be waaaay more than 5,000 lbs. Without looking anything up, I'd say it'd be AT LEAST 10 tons.

I knew I would like this monster when I saw the weight section.
I have not been disappointed.

@Flish - I think I got 5000 by scaling up what a grizzly bear would weigh, but I'll take your word for it. Also I'm very happily surprised that you don't have any scientific inaccuracies to point out this time.

Well, a Tyrannosaurus of the same length is a good two times as heavy, as this thing is definitely bulkier. :P

10 tons would be underweight for this thing. The biggest elephants weigh more then that, and they are more slender as well as dimensionally smaller. Make that 5000 pounds 50 tons, and that'd be more realistic.

Ooh didn't actually think of that, but it shouldn't be too hard to deal with.

With the purpose of the dish-face being to focus the sound so much I don't think the ears would get hardly any of the initial blast, but they might get some reflected waves I suppose. I'm not sure if those would be enough to cause problems, but maybe. So just have a second, tougher membrane that damps some of the very loud sounds to make them less loud. This membrane would come down automatically through the sympathetic nervous system when the sound attack is being used and then it would go back up when it's not to allow quieter sounds to get in easier. Sort of like how some animals have a nictitating membrane over the eye, but this is for ears.
