Not that there's anything wrong with Duk's Place, but for as much as we talk about it, having it's own topic just makes sense. I'm down to the last few months of work for the season and nearing getting a new laptop, so I've been researching a bit about BNW in anticipation. I was wondering though if any of you guys might be able to explain it's changes and mechanics to me a bit better? |

BNW is pretty fun, though only for its mechanics and not the civs themselves, IMO. *Spies are mostly for Diplomatic victory, though are also helpful in getting techs, protecting yourself from having techs stolen, and in increasing tourism. They are powerful if you are not leading in tech, but if you are, its best just to have them in every city so you don't have your techs stolen then to increase relationship with city states. *Caravans and cargo ships basically are just a replacement for getting money from coast and river tiles. if anything they're better, because you can create a ton of money if used correctly. They improve cultural relationships, too, along with trading sci and gold. *Religion is the same as in GK as far as I know, but there are more religions to choose form because Christianity was split up for whatever reason. *The world congress and UN are basically just there as a way to screw other civs over and win Diplomatically. That's it. There's also the world games and some other thing which are basically just culture boosts for whoever puts the most production into them. *Tourism is an addon to the Cultural vic so it's not a clone of the science victory. Basically, culture is used as a defense AND as a means of gaining social policies which are just buffs now rather than anything necessary. Tourism is your offensive. There are also modifiers that increase tourism such as open borders and trade routes. Once you make enough tourism, you become "influential" over one of the civs, usually one that is particularly low on culture or you've known for a long time. It can also be used to screw people over via ideologies. *Ideologies are picked after you get enough factories or enter the modern era. They are just big social policies, really, except other civs like you more or less depending on the ideology you picked. If they picked a different ideology and your tourism output to them is "exotic" or higher, you will make their population produce extra unhappiness which can lead to barbs spawning in your territory or even cities leaving you for the closest civ of that ideology. Basically you're done if you ignore culture or tourism, unless you're like Gandhi and create a buttload of happiness. I think that's everything. |

Non-upgraded Gold, for example, worked by your cities will you provide you some money and hammers. With a mine on it, you will get more money and hammers, Gold as a luxury resource, and the ability to get jewelers or mints. Unless those are from mods. Get mods. The wonders are so unbelievably OP. |

Acquire Great Works/Wonders, get tourism. Essentially you just make you overwhelm other nations with your culture. Normally a late game win, unless you mod. Which you should. Why aren't you modding yet? |

Essentially what Saidi said. You need to create Great Works through the use of Great Musicians/Artists/Writers to gain Tourism, from there, once you have more Tourism than the enemies have Culture, you win. However, you need a variety of buildings and whatnot to house these Great Works, and some are hard to come by, especially in the early game. There are also wonders that'll help you get or defend against Tourism, apart from a high amount of culture. |

Hey, October is better than never and it'll be awesome when you can finally join us! Ah, Flish is Babylon, I'm the Maya, and Blix is Ethiopia. @Mongols: I suppose so. I only have been in two games with them. In one he was a close ally of mine since we met and we attacked Korea together, but then stuff got complicated and mangled and I was left no choice but to put him down by the medieval era. Anyways, he only had one city and a mediocre army. The second time, he was suffering terribly of unhappiness to the point that barbarians were spawning in his territory and he never successfully invaded anyone (his neighbors were England to the south, Maya and Spain to the north and Russia to the north west). The only notable thing he did was build the Hubble Telescope... @Japan/Nukes: I've never actually nuked Japan because in the few games I've met them one of us always dies before the industrial era. I am, however, very nuke happy on a level that would make Gandhi cry and always rush nuclear technology and obtaining nukes. |

@Mongols: Yeah, they always seem to be at the bottom of the rankings. I'd guess the AI just doesn't/can't comprehend the tactics needed for the Mongols. They're great when used right, but if you don't know how to utilize their ability for cavalry to its fullest you may as well be playing without any unique traits at all. See, for example here are a few of the times I've played as Mongolia. The once I went h***-bent for domination on a panagea map. By the time my Keshiks were starting to go out of date, I had conquered everyone except Germany. They had five or six cities, I had probably twenty or something. I encircled them with my army but then stopped at that point, partly because the battle was already won. I could have danced around their spear right then and there, I could have focused on tech to get tanks before attacking, or I could have just encircled them with cities of my own to deny expansion while I went for any victory I wanted. In another, I took out Germany and captured their capital to my south-west as soon as I had units. Then I sent horsemen east and took out Greece. From there, Persia was to the north, Arabia to the south, and beyond that China to the south-west and the Ottomans to the south-east. I'm not sure if I ever took out Persia but I did fight with them and win. I took out Arabia and then split my army into two to take on China and the Ottomans at the same time. I think I took out both of them except the Ottomans held on by an island city and the vanilla naval system protecting them. It was a continents map and I was into more modern tech by then so I just went for a tech victory at that point. @Nukes: Yeah, I like to use them now when I can after having used them a few times. The fallout is a turn-off, except at that point you've usually got a bunch of workers just sitting around anyway. @Saidi: Ah, but did you do so as America? I did.

@Mongols: Sounds epic! I only played as them once and failed miserably because it was on a tsl but I'd made it so that I was the only player in the old world and Mongolia is just so barren and useless.... So yeah, I might try them again at a later date. From there I guess it doesn't help that the Mongol UA is pretty worthless other than the extra mp, because either way, attacking city states is the equivalent of shooting a civilian in first person shooter games. Overall they have lots of potential but the AI just doesn't know how to put it to work. @Nukes: Yeah, usually I have way too many workers just sitting around doing nothing by that point in the game. I'd have to say my best use of nukes thus far is either when I nuked India back to the stone age because Gandhi was talking s***, or when I reduced the Aymara to ruins and then sold their cities to the highest bidders. I was quite surprised to see how much people were willing to pay for irradiated resource-less wastelands but hey, it worked haha. |
