Long story short? By the time I stopped last night I'd wiped out the Ottomans, wiped out Morocco with nukes, Mongolia was still holding on but as badly nuked if not worse, and my navy was making progress on Japan.

And with that accomplishment and the sealing of my domination over that world, it's time for my 4-Civ game to begin...

So, for some reason, a few nights ago I was playing my game as Evita, and the game worked fine. Then, suddenly, next morning the game would not load; it would say that "a program has stopped CiV to stop working. The game will close now". It has been doing this thing for the last two weeks or so, so I've been unable to play it. I've verified the cache, uninstalled anti-virus, re-installed the game, and even set the PC to an earlier date, but nothing does shite it seems.

Congratulations. :3 I get bored with really long dom vics sometimes. :P

Ty5: Safavids? From a quick wikipedia search they seem somewhat interesting.

Historically, the Safavids were real badasses. I actually haven't played them in-game yet (I meant to, but then something made me write that paragraph up at the top of the post) but they seem to be fun.

If you like offense, I'd definitely try out (ufufu~) the Timurids. Besides being lead by one of history's most prominent kickass-ers, they have some pretty fun mechanics.

I'm not too worried about Europe.

In any games I've played, Europe is always Jehennam-on-Earth. There game's just too Euro-and-Middle East-centric. Both of those areas end up getting filled up with aggressive civs that just spend forever beating eachother up. It's worse in Europe, though, since it's just all forests and mountains, while the Middle East at least has some nice open ground.

Asia, North America, and Australia are always essentially uninhabited. Africa can actually get a bit crowded, but that's only because all the civs that spawn there seem to be incredibly expansionist (especially the Zulus and Boers). In the end, though, Africa seems to always end up being completely conquered by Nzinga, history's greatest waifu.

You know, I don't think I've ever seen the Moroccans declare war. This'll be intriguing.

Moroccans? Declaring war? Blasphemy.

Mine tends to not recognize a few, including Canada, Australia, and Philippines. I'm not sure why though as it seems to work decently for most people.

Yeah, mine originally wouldn't do Prussia or Iceland. Although, interestingly, it seems to work now; not sure what I did. Maybe try re-downloading or something?

Quote:

Haha yeah, there's plenty of new civs. However I've noticed a trend on a lot of the new civs being re-makes of civs that are already in game (Ex. Lincoln's America, Hitler's Germany, Victoria's England, etc.) or former Mongol states. There's dozens more though, representing lots of the world that was left out of the base game. You should look into some of them someday

I don't like civs that have been copied for no reason, and have too little change to be considered their own civ; for, example, Lincoln's America (which I didn't even know was a thing tbh), or Nicholas' Russia (besides the fact that there's no reason you'd ever want Nicky here to lead anything, being that he's pretty much considered the worst ruler in Russian history).

I do, however, have a few which I feel deserve their own civ, like the Empire of the Sun. I mean, Japan went through a ton of changes in the Meiji Restoration and the Boshin War; it basically changed their whole society.

Frankly, I think all the separate samurai clans should be their own civs, but that's probably only because I'm a massive weeb. :P Also still waiting for someone to make Yamatai and the Ainu.

Hrmm... I know when I'd had issues with it not loading, I ended up re-installing Civ and it's worked fine since. It sounds like you've already tried that though, so I don't know what else to suggest. :(

4-Civ Game, Turn 50

-Ethiopia:
The small nation of Etiopia has only a single city, with a second soon to be founded. Build alongside rivers, they call the Ethiopian Desert their home and sacred lands. They have remained secluded from other civilization, but in their seclusion they have founded the world's first religion; K'varism.

-Shoshone:
The Shoshone are an expansive and industrious people originating from the grasslands of the Shoshone River. Their lands reach from their capital of Moson Kahni and its mighty Pyramids at the River's middle, to Te-Moak where it meets the sea in the north, and then further north still to coastal Agaidika on the plains surrounding the great rock Uluru. East of Agaidika they have discovered the city of Istanbul, capital of The Ottomans. Little is known of this foreign nation, except that they are a coastal people whose lands contain gold and their seas bearing pearls. They are a faithful people, but have yet to found a religion proper.

-Zulu:
The Zulu are a people two cities strong, native to the thin stretch of plans between the tundra in the south and coast to the north. They are still a somewhat unremarkable civilization, their biggest feature so far being their mining operations, particularly in regards to salt. To their north they have encountered two other civilizations; Japan to the east and England to the west. So far little is known about either of these civilizations.

-England:
The English are a small nation from their capital of London, situated at the north part of some manner of sea. Little is know of their sea, save for the presence of whales and pearl near their city. Though there is little remarkable about this small nation yet, they have met three other civilizations. On the western side of the English Sea, they have been met by scouts of a people called the Zulu, whose exact origins are unknown. Englands' own scouting effort have been directed down the east side of their sea. Heading south, the first to met encountered are the lands of the Huns, and then south of them, the lands of Russia. The most that is known of these civilizations is that the Huns appear to have at least three cities, while Russia, like England, still only has their capital.

--------

I feel very sad for England, and also a bit ticked. I'm pretty sure that the English Sea is an inland sea, which is annoying because go figure that the first coastal capital I get is inland, and it's with the very sea-oriented English. Second, how lucky for England that its three closest neighbors are the Huns, Zulu, and Japan?

4-Civ Game, Turn 130

-Ethiopia:
In its solitude Ethiopia flourishes. While in truth smaller and not even as productive or profitable as other civilizations, they are one of the very few who have not expended beyond their worth. Through this, they are producing a surplus where others sit in debt or unrest. Scouting of their surrounding lands they have discovered that they are alone on a small continent. A blessing and a curse all at once, they have only barbarians to fear, but gain none of the benefits of interacting with others either. The religion of K'varism flourishes, but with few places to spread. Soon, however, Ethiopia will expand with a new city, and the surrounding seas will open up before them.

-Shoshone:
The Shoshone gave birth to the religion of Spirituality, and it has spread like wildfire among their cities and to the nearby city-states. They have built more great wonders along the banks of their sacred river, cementing the proof of their existence no matter what may happen in the future. They have not expanded further, but they have explored out to the seas. To their north, they have discovered they are on the south side of a massive bay, right at its mouth. Up at the north of this bay -which they have named the Bay of Ragusa, after the island city-state inhabiting it- they have discovered the civilization of India and it's capital, Delhi. But soon, the expansion shall continue...

-Zulu:
Praise to the mighty Zulu! Praise to Shaka the Great! The cities of Japan are razed, and now Kyoto stands surrounded and falling before the Zulu forces! Through special training they have made an army without compare, and now with technological advancement they give birth to the first members of a new breed; The Impi. The Zulu empire stands on the verge of glory, among the best of all civilizations in existence. Its power shall spread across the land to bring all under the banner of Zulu and into the glory of the empire! Looking ever forward, the generals set their sights on nearby London of England. It is the perfect candidate on which to bloody the spears of the new Impi.

-England:
Though small and its growth stunted by barbarian attacks, England has placed itself among the most advanced civilizations. And now, the barbarians pushed back, expansion can finally begin. Their second city, York, was founded to the north-west of London, over the ruins of a recently founded and then razed Japanese city. Situated on the coast of a sea to the north, it is hoped to become a base for naval exploration. London has put up walls, and other defenses are prepared under the fear of threats even greater than mere barbarians. To the west, the Zulu have been at war with Japan. To the south, Moscow has fallen to the Huns, and it would appear that Russians might soon be wiped out entirely. The people pray to the gods of their Marinia religion, in hopes of protection a guidance in the dark times that loom ahead.

--------

So in summary:
Ethiopia is stuck on an Australia-like (albeit northern) island continent and things are going good if perhaps a bit boring.
The Shoshone are starting to explore further around them by sea, and are preparing to expand into these new lands.
England is smack in the middle between the Huns and Zulu. I don't know what is going to happen, but s*** IS going to happen. I foresee, one way or another, a massive war between the Huns and Zulu. What will become of England in this brewing storm, or if it will survive long enough to bear witness to the main event, I do not know...

4-Civ Game, Turn 150

-Ethiopia:
Preparations are nearly finished for the founding of a new city on the coast. Ethiopia's bounty only continues to grow.

-Shoshone:
Sailing north-west along the coast from the mouth of the Bay of Ragusa, the Shoshone have met the city states of Hong-Kong and La Venta off the tip of the La Venta Peninsula. Not far north of there they have discovered arctic waters, and now turn around to explore the south.

-Zulu:
Kyoto has fallen to the Zulu, and London has followed it. After the capture of London, York has been left in peace, not worth the effort of an attack right now. The Impi have headed west, and have encountered a people called the Huns. Though little is known, what is known is that there is much wealth in their lands, ripe for the Zulu to claim. Contact has been made with the ships of people originating from the north-east across the sea, calling themselves the Ottomans.

-England:
The Zulu came as feared, and London has fallen. Only York remains now, and it will be struggle to survive. However, the people are now unite to a cause; to one day reclaim their homeland, to reclaim London, and to strike down the evil of the Zulu.

--------

So yeah, England is unlikely to win, but is now going to have an awesome "return from the ashes"/"chosen one to fight the darkness" plot. Also just to be clear, with the Zulu and Ottomans meeting and exchanging embassies we now know that the Shoshone are east of the Zulu and English.

4-Civ Game, Turn 201

-Ethiopia:
The Ethiopians have set sail, and circled the coasts of their island. Many city-states they have met, but no new lands have yet been found. Ethiopia nonetheless continues to be small but strong.

-Shoshone:
The Shoshone have expanded with a new city -Goshute- on the north side of the mouth of the Bay of Ragusa. Their exploration efforts also continue to expand their horizons. They have met Egypt, an inland civilization north of the La Venta Peninsula. To the west, across the sea, they have met England. Following the coast of that continent, they have also encountered the Zulu and Huns, just as the former wiped out the later. The second scouting ship, sent south and then east, has met the strange civilization of the Inca. But a more pressing mater has arose on the home front; the green-eyed Ottomans have declared war.

-Zulu:
The Huns have fallen before the mighty Zulu. Now the Zulu control four capitals, plus their own. Successful in the defeat of the Huns, the Impi have returned to the east and embarked across the sea. Even now, the first Impi has landed off-shore.

-England:
York grows, and the people hope that soon they can begin expanding. Ships have been sent as far east as a place the locals call the Bay of Ragusa. The civilizations of Egypt and India have been met on the journeys. The Zulu seem to have forgotten England, distracted by other conquests as. They spread their evil.

--------

So two things.
1. From what I can tell from the Shoshone's exploration, Ethiopia has to be somewher north of the Inca or Zulu.
2: The Shoshone and Ottomans don't know it yet, but they're both utterly f***ed. DX

Hmmm, so is Ethiopia completely ocean-locked? Or do you think there's any continental shelves connecting it to elsewhere?

Huh, the Ottoman are making their move quite early. At least it's now and not when they have their Sipahis and Jannisaries. I myself am quite upset by how well the Shoshone are doing in my current game T_T.

1: It would seem that way. The last place I have to look is to see if there's a strip of coast near the ice past a couple city-states to the north-west. I should know within a few turns. Either way I'm making a b-line for Astronomy. I just need Education and Compass to unlock it. Luckily, Ethiopia is producing a lot of tourism for when it does meet other civs. K'varism has Cathedrals (which as you know have an art slot) and Mosques, AND Sacred Sites (All faith-purchased buildings produce 2 tourism). So right now with my three cities I've got 18 tourism, which is more than anyone else to my knowledge. And because of how much faith I produce it's no issue to buy religious buildings, so each time I found a new city I can count on having another 4 tourism.

2: Hah, yeah. If it was just the Ottomans attacking me right now I'm sure I'd hold them off, even with my fairly limited forces. It's the Zulu and their Impi's that are going to be the problem. I can't say I ever realized before just how terrifying Impi with the unique promotions can be.

That's really awesome!!! I love Mosques, the extra faith is always a plus, and Sacred Sites is most excellent for the Cultural victory. Really you could make a nice expansive empire, though that'd be rather un-Ethiopian. If you decide to take the Tradition tree though, at least four of your cities will likely be very culture-oriented powerhouses. I think maybe a mixture of Piety, Tradition, and Aestheticism would work best.

The Impi are absolutely terrifying. Shaka is indeed a very worthy opponent until you get your hands on gunpowder and even then a particularly competent instance of the Shaka AI is still quite the force. His ability to maintain a bigger army and make them more experienced more quickly really helps out too.
------------------

So far I've been playing a 22 player TSL game with myself, and it's been... intriguing.

The Iroquois Cheifdom currently consists of 3 Cities build around the Great lakes, mostly on the Canadian side. They're a very pious people but otherwise not much can be said about them.

The Shoshone Republic is the current world power of the Classical Era, stretching as far east as the Mississippi River, as far west as the Pacific Coast, as far south as the Rio Grande, and as far north as Alaska, and wields a massive army capable of wiping their neighbors off the globe, were they to ever get in a war. Mostly however, the Shoshone are a cultured people and have shown no interest in conquest... yet.

The Aztec Despotate is likely the poorest of the formalized nations in the Western Hemisphere, full of starving people and a strict militaristic caste. The Aztec lands stretch as far south as central Mexico and go as far north as Baja California and the Colorado River Delta. Most of their land is rather barren however, but their massive Jaguar Warrior Army has it's sights set on some of the southern Shoshone Provinces....

The Mayan Cheifdom is located to the south-east of the Aztec lands and is also a very pious country, excelling in science and faith above it's other neighbors. They are a divided and small people, however, owning only the land sought of the great peninsula, Yucatan, and the lands of the Isthmus connecting the lands of the north and south.

The Incan Republic is another mighty nation, and is by far the best fed and most productive in the western hemisphere, as well as quickly nearing the rank of most wealthy. In fact, they'd likely be more powerful than their northern rivals, the Shoshone, if they focused more on developing their empire and less on settling each and every hill in the southern hemisphere. Their empire stretches the whole length of the Andes, from the equator to Tierra Del Fuego, and with a few cities tentatively stretching into the Amazon and the Pampas. Their army is currently sub-par and outclassed by the Shoshone and Aztecs, but they intend on building it up with the goal to crush the upstarts of Montevideo and Panama City.

To the west, far away from the Amerindian world, the isolated Polynesia is quickly on the rise. They are still a small nation, owning only the Hawaiian Islands, but their years of exploring the high seas have led them to discover quite the bounty. A massive and completely uninhabited land to the south-west, home of a massive reef unlike any seen before, and a massive rock marking the center of the massive island. Already, many Polynesian settlers are making their way there, eager to settle the new lands they've discovered. Already the Polynesians have discovered the Japanese Kingdom and the Tribe of Indonesia, but above all their greatest achievement has been the building of a Great Lighthouse unlike any seen before.

Indonesia is a race of god-fearing savages living in the shadows of a volcano and they suck. Next.

North of the Indonesians is the Holy Kingdom of Siam, a moderately sized Kingdom built on the grasslands of the South-Asian coast. The Siamese are also a very pious people and have slowly but steadily begun exploring the lands around them, though they seem to be mostly isolationist. Thankfully for them, their secluded kingdom is surrounded by thick jungle and harsh mountains to the north and a sea to the south.

North of the Siamese is the Chinese Republic, the grandest civilization in the East. The Chinese have quickly expanded as far south as the jungles that separate Siam from the world and as far west as the Gobi desert. So far they are in good standings with all of their neighbors and are regional leaders in wealth, science, and productivity, easily making them the powerhouse of the Asian landmass. Their capital Beijing was likely the greatest city of the Ancient World and houses an Arch of Triumph representing China's accomplishments in comparison to its then barbaric neighbors as well as housing a Great Library, far greater than any on the face of the earth.

Across the sea from the Chinese Republic is the small Korean Kingdom, a diminutive nation encompassing only their peninsula of land and nothing more. However, they do have a settler moving north, with intent of settling the rugged coast to the east, away from the Chinese. So far, the Korean Kingdom hasn't achieved much though, and is the ancient equivalent of a "fly-over" country.

Across the sea from the Koreans is the island Kingdom of Japan. The Japanese own all of their elongated island, save for the southernmost tip of it, which is mostly jungle. They are a very cultured people, perhaps the most cultured in all of Asia, and live in a state of perpetual peace. They have very fertile lands and a nice array of natural defenses from their neighbors. However, they are rather unremarkable as well, with their only notable characteristics being their culture and the great grassy volcano that they call Fuji.

Going west, beyond the lands of the Koreans and Chinese is the desert nation of the Mongolian Despotate. The Mongols are another very militaristic race, inhabiting the harsh desert and tundra. They are incredibly expansive for an old-world civilization and have stretched as far west as the Aral Sea, as far east as China, as far north as the northern most edge of lake Baikal, and as far south as the Himalayas. Other than being amongst the biggest of nations in Asia, they have no notable characteristics.

South of the Mongolians and across the Himalays reside the people of India. India is a very cultured nation, full of many resources and very fertile lands. They also hold a key spot between Asia and the Western world, making them a seat of commerce. They too have no notable achievements.

To the south west of India, across the inhospitable Arabian Peninsula lies the Ethiopian Holy Kingdom. The Ethiopians are a poor people, but also a very faithful people, living in the harsh environment of the Horn of Africa. They have various terrains in their empire, from large mountains and deserts to thick forests and jungles. Recently they've begun to expand, but for the most part have only kept to themselves, shunning their more barbaric neighbors to the south and west. Their outlook may improve soon however, as small Ethiopian settlements have begun to spring up on the shores of Lake Victoria and at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Zulu City-States are a cluster of cities united under the collective banner of the Zulu nation. A proud and warlike people, the Zulu are the scourge of the south, having already conquered the city-state once known as Cape Town, now under the name of iKapa. Soon the Zulu will begin moving north however, with Kinshasa, Kabongo, and Ethiopia in their sights.

On the Westernmost end of Africa resides the Republic of Songhai. Songhai is another expansive empire, stretching across all of the unforested sections of West Africa. They, like the rest of the African Nations, are mostly self-reliant and isolationist, ignoring their neighbors. However, as their borders continue to expand, it is likely that they will come into conflict with the people of Ife. They have explored the vast majority of Africa, but are apprehensive of the great desert of the north.

Far off to the distant north, beyond the desert and across two seas is a cluster of islands populated by the Celtic Holy Kingdom. The Celts are an incredibly pious people and were recently blessed with the birth of a Great Prophet in the city of Edinburgh. Now, the majority of the Celtic kingdom strongly adheres to their religion, the Cradle of Sheep. They have outgrown their islands however, and have their sights set on the mainland to the south.

To the south and east of the Celts is Rome, who sucks.

To the north-east of Rome is the Danish City-States. They suck more than Rome.

To the far east of the Danes is the great Hunnic Republic, a very cultured civilization surviving in the grasslands and forests of far-eastern Europe. They are incredibly expansive as well, for a European nation, and take up most of the lands north of Anatolia, east of the Balkans, south of the Tundra, and west of Mongolia. They are a very peaceful people and have no notable achievements save for their incredible size.

South of the Huns is the Ottoman City-States, a collection of widely spaced cites. They hate their Byzantine neighbors and are wanting to be very expansionist. No notable achievements either.

Byzantium is next to the Ottoman City-State of Istanbul. Their only notable achievement is having the biggest navy in the whole world, populated entirely by Greek-Fire Spitting Dromons. They're at war with Yerevan, and are generally unliked by the world.
-------------------------------------------

So yeah, that's my little speech about my current game. The Ottomen will probably snatch up Yerevan once the Byzantines weaken it, and then snatch up Yerevan. The Huns will likely keep expanding. Rome will probably expand more and kill some city-states. The Celts will expand more and get more prophets, probably. Denmark will probably stay lame. Songhai will probably expand into the desert. Ethiopia will probably do a lot of nothing. The Zulu will probably try and fail to eat Ethiopia. India will probably expand a lot and kill some city-states. Siam will probably expand a lot and kill Nan Madol. China will probably expand more. Japan will likely do a lot of nothing. Same with Korea. Mongolia will probably attack China and Korea. Indonesia sucks. Polynesia will probably encompass all of Australia some day. The Iroquois will hopefully get better now that I have the ability to make Lumber Mills. The Shoshone will probably keep expanding into the lands nobody else has taken. The Aztecs will probably starve to death while attacking the Shoshone. The Maya will hopefully get better when I start up a road system. The Inca will probably get better now that I have Terrace Farms and will probably attack the Maya. So yeah.

MLS is, and always will be, slightly more intelligent than Ayn Rand.

I like how you’ve crossed out the actually sensible thing, in favor of being Smaug.

The best thing that's happened to me in a long long time. Welcome back bro, I've missed you.

Yep, that's exactly the policy combination I've gone with for Ethiopia. I don't know if they'll ever move off their island, but I do expect they'll have it all filled up given time.

I like how you just say "X sucks".

I'm actually rather interested in how Polynesia is doing. I could see them making a really good power-base out of it and actually being a potential powerhouse later in the game.

4-Civ Game, Turn 232 (1610 AD)

-Ethiopia:
Surrounded by ocean, Ethiopia continues to expand over its island. However, their knowledge of the world has recently expanded nonetheless as a Shoshone Caravel has reached their coasts. Shortly after this, the Shoshone founded a World Congress, introducing Ethiopia to the rest of the world; The Zulu, England, Egypt, The Inca, The Aztecs, The Ottomans, and India. Ethiopia is honored to make one of the first proposals to Congress, and proposes to enact Arts Funding.

-Shoshone:
Just as the Ottomans had declared war, so did the Zulu from the west. However, both forces were fended off though the country-side around Moson Kahni was heavily pillaged. As technology advanced, in the midst of the war, the Shoshone started to build a fleet of Galleasses that helped push back The Ottomans, and in the future are planned to be used on the offensive. Continuing to explore the coasts, the civilization of the Aztecs was met, to the north of the Inca. All coasts were now known to the Shoshone, but with perfect timing the oceans have opened up. A Caravel was sent to explore the mysterious oceans north of Zuluia. In t hese unexplored waters the Shoshone ship came upon the coast of an island, home to the isolated civilization of Ethiopia. With this discovery and the dawn of the Printing Press, a new idea came to head; to bring together the nations of the world to work in unison -to create a World Congress. As proud host of this new council, the Shoshone have proposed to bring the world together even further with a World Fair. But even with these diplomatic advances, the Shoshone still train their armies towards their neighbor and oldest foe, the Ottomans.

-Zulu:
The attack on Moson Kahni failed, the Impi have retreated and the Zulu turn their attention inward. Now the Impi are tasked to clear the continent of barbarians, as work to build up the civilization's prior conquests begins. The World Congress has been founded, and with it the Zulu have met many new civilizations from across the waves. Some of these have been more than happy to trade gold for the Zulu excess luxuries.

-England:
York slowly continues to grow, but England remains rather weak.

--------

Lesson learned: Impi are not as good as Keshiks. If I was playing as Mongolia and using Keshiks, Moson Kahni would have fallen, 40 defense or not. 3-to-4 Keshiks and a Horseman, that's all it would have taken. Eight or so Impi? Didn't stand a snowballs' chance in hades. :\

Today, I'm going to be takin' these four fine folks into the biggest, meanest dungeon in the Forgotten Realms, and I don't know if they're gonna survive.
...But I'm cool with that.
