So something kinda cool/funny just happened in the game of Civ I had started partway through last week. I did random leader on Emperor difficulty and got Siam, and got an okay starting spot. Except that I had Greece as a neighbor, and good ol' Alexander founded a city in the desert right next to me and has been pretty much hostile ever since. Basically everything I've been working towards so far had just been towards the sole goal of surviving the inevitable conflict. Finally I start seeing a number of his units moving in and around his city/near my borders, and he randomly turns friendly and asks me if I want to attack China with him. Discounting the fact that I had just set up a luxury trade with China, the whole thing pretty much just set off all the warning bells in my mind. Sure enough, his armies move into sight along my borders and he declares war a few turns after. At this point, he's got the strongest army in the world and is one of the top-three Civs at the time, meanwhile I've got the worst or second-worst army and am basically at the bottom of every other demographic too. Literally the only units I had at the time he declared war were a Scout, Pikeman, and Composite Bowman. He move on my capital and I've already started kicking my unit production into high gear and dipping into my treasury. I lose a few units but have new ones ready in perfect timing to replace them. I made a few more Pikemen but mainly focused on Bowmen, knowing ranged attacks were going to be my best shot (heh heh). Alexanders' force was mostly Pikemen, with a handful of Catapults as his only ranged units, and only a pair of Swordsmen besides that. I had a couple units from my northern city that hit his forces in the flank and focused on taking down his catapults before they could be of any use, meanwhile I killed off his Pikemen gradually as they tried to besiege my capital. Eventually I had gotten his forces cut in probably half and was gaining momentum as my own forces were now growing. He broke off the attack on my capital and moved all his guys south to attack my undefended newest city. My forces hit his in the rear as they went south, but as he still had the numbers I had to continue to play a defensive strategy which allowed him to capture my southern city. However, by this time he was down to less than half a dozen Pikemen, and my army was eclipsing his in size plus soon had the addition of a Great General (appropriately, it was Spartacus). Long story short, it didn't take too much longer for me to turn all his Pikemen into pincushions and re-capture my city. Now I have the 9th strongest army in the world and growing, made up of about 5 or 6 composite bowmen and two Pikemen, with two catapults about to come into service. Alexander meanwhile has now fallen all the way to the bottom of the military rankings, and there's nothing but flat open desert between me and that city of his that has been my rival for all of the game. (Also, sorry again, AR. I honestly don't know what is up with me and Greece that this keeps happening so often.) |

![]() Current map of the world in my latest game of Civ V. I am playing as the Kawekasar, native people of southern Chile. Their ability, Sea Nomads, allows them to airlift units from one Coastal City to another from turn 1. Their UU is a trade vessel that generates additional science, and their UB generates faith as well as special tile yields based on the latest trends among the Kawekasar (determined by the expenditure of Great People). The Setting is currently Deity, and this is the best game I've ever had... I doubt it'll last much longer. My nation follows Freedom, and is one of only two in the world to do so. The majority of my empire is in South America, including some cities I've nabbed from my neighbors. I also have a colony in North America and am the owner of the Kawekasar Canal. My only allies are Sonhai, India, Media, Ethiopia, and the Moors. I'm currently in a war against the Inca, Iroquois, and Indonesia. Everyone else hates me. The Kuikuro (Brazilian natives from the interior amazon) were once very expansive in South America owning all of IRL Brazil and the IRL Chilean Core. The Inca and I reduced them to a City-State in the past, and now they only have their capital and one city I gifted them after taking it from the Inca. The Inca were at one point strong, but now their only notable faction is the Air Force, which is putting on a lot of resistance. A lot of their problems come from their many failed amphibious attacks against my navy. They have lost Cusco to me, and are at war with their former ally, Chavin de Huantar. The Olmec are very reclusive and don't really talk to anyone. They used to like me before I settled in North America and slayed the Kuikuro. The Iroquois are the strongest civ in the Americas with a massive army. Their religion, Orenda, is followed in all of the Americas and in the Moorish Emirate of Huelva (Greenland). Seeing as its pantheon is "Goddess of Protection" and it's ability "Swords into Plowshares" (which generates food), it probably stemmed from the need to be protected from Wendigos. They're allied with Quebec. The Moors (Islamic-Era Spain) are the dominant European power, and are the only other follower of Freedom. The Moors, unlike in real life, don't have any one preferred religion, with religious dominance varying in the many emirates, and the whole union being very tolerant. The Kingdom of Two Scicilies is a strange nation, which is still ruled by a heavily inbred monarchy keeping the union between Naples and Palermo (Finland). They're Zoroastrians. Naples and Croatia are another small pair of Zoroastrian kingdoms focusing on maritime trade and trade of Gold and Aluminum. Belgium is an independent Zoroastrian Kingdom in Europe, and are famed for their Sugar Economy. Songhai, once a caliphate but now one of the dozens of communist nations of the world, is a strong African country. They're also the founders of Islam, a strange death-cult revolving around Ceremonial Burial and Reliquaries, having graveyards as Religious Centers and sites of Divine Inspiration. The religion is practiced in Songhai, southern Egypt, Nri, The Emirate of Seville (Morocco), the Emirate of Zaragoza (England-Scotland), and the Emirate of Malaga (Ireland) but has many Underground Sects as far away as Istanbul and Madagascar. Egypt is very big, but not very powerful. They are also one of the few Autocracies in the modern world (Gadaffi?) . Ethiopia likewise is very large, but not very strong, failing to conquer Southern Africa. They are also the founders of Oriental Orthodoxy, a religion that has Jesuit Education and is much like Christianity, but with Mosques instead of Churches. However, it is only present within Ethiopia. Abu Dhabi was once a wide union of emirates stretching all across Arabia and the Southern Mediterranean, even as far north as Greece and as far west as Algeria. They were also a great race of explorers, being the first to discover all other civilizations and map the world. All this ended when the Huns invaded from the sea. Now Abu Dhabi is a small and backwards country in the desert who practices the heathen faith of Arianism. Arianism believes in making a pilgrimage to Abu Dhabi (shouldn't be hard, as it's only followers live there), the holiness of Emirati settlements (there's really only one), but is charitable, often giving charity and striving to end world hunger. Come to think of it, Abu Dhabi must be a nice little place to live in. The Medes are a middling Autocratic power who are losing a war to the Huns after many years of successful defense. A former power, during the renaissance, the Medes had a large colonial empire in the South Pacific. They founded Zoroastrianism, a very very very very very very very very religious religion of pious people (Monasteries, Pagodas, Religious Fervor, Missionary Zeal). We have no idea what they worship other than "Desert folklore" but it's the biggest religion and followed in much of Europe and Asia and even as far as the South Pacific and Australia. India is very big, but not especially powerful. They've colonized the far reaches of Asia's frozen north, and are the hosts of the World Congress. Just wait till they get nukes.... Indonesia is a small and insignificant country with an absurdly massive navy that's been slamming against my back door for the better half of a century now. They're also the founders of Shavist Hinduism, who's cult originated from the legends of Shiva causing the eruption of Krakatoa with his holy dancing. They're a well balanced religion who believe in the power of each individual to be as much like Shiva as possible. This cult is common in East Asia, including China. Japan is a colonial empire, but otherwise keep to themselves. They mostly follow Hinduism, except in Kyoto, where they believe in Shintoism. Shintoism tells us of a God of War, and thay he came to Japan and died for our sins, and now they await the second coming of their Messiah. Perhaps Shinto and Shaivaism are related? China is the biggest most powerful country in the whole entire universe and are really only rivaled by the Huns. They are very communist and like bullying all the non-communists (aka ME). They also have recently discovered how to make Atom Bombs.... The Ottomans were evicted from the middle east and now live in tiny tundra towns in northern russia. They are very sad and very Zoroastrian. Hong Kong, Philippines, and Australia are small but mighty, and have very powerful navies. Hanoi doesn't do much. The Huns are the second, possibly first, most powerful nation. Very early on they slayed the Ottomans and Emiratis, having Colonies as far away as Somaliland and Sri lanka. They're at war with China, The Medes, Egypt, Songhai, The Moors, and India AMD despite having lost the Mediterranean and the overseas colonies, they have made gains in European, Siberian, and Mesopotamian lands. They're also at war with me and refuse to make peace without me giving up all of my cities. |

My games always end up being super boring tbh. I either spawn in a situation I have no way of doing well in, or I spawn with no one around me so it's not fun. One of the only cases that didn't happen was in that Vietnam game that was lost to the bowels of weird CiV glitches. I'd pick my own civs so that didn't happen but then I know who is all in game and that's no fun, either.

Thanks, Ty! It looks like a pretty interesting game, although I doubt my computer would be able to run it that well. My father says we might be getting a new computer since this one is a bit wonky, so I could maybe check it out once we've done that. I'm not sure if the offer would still be open, though. |
