So I found this yesterday, and I'm pretty sure it's brand-new. Of course, it's not finished, but hopefully we'll be able to see some gameplay on Youtube.
There's plenty of concept art as to the dinosaurs and such, but first, a trailer!
ARK: Survival Evolved
Okay, so it's a little shiny. But I think it has the potential to be a great game. The fact that you can tame dinosaurs and... other things, is really cool. Seems similar to the savage lands, only more versatile. In any case, it seems similar to a concept I had a while ago, as to a Godzilla-esque open world where you play as a kaiju and attack random cities. But yeah, looks really cool. I'm gunna try and find some concept/gameplay pics.

The game actually looks very nice so far, might even go as far as to say gorgeous, although I am a little skeptical of the dragons/mythical creatures and guns as it seems like it may be trying to wear too many 'hats' so to speak. But I mean I can't for sure say until I see actual gameplay/play it myself.

That said, I'll probably still get it. I'm hurting for a dinosaur survival game since the heartbreak that was the Stomping Land, and the devs on this seem to be a bit more communicative. *knocks on wood*

Oh and I'll drop this here, it's the current list of confirmed creatures:

I still need to take a look at it in a moment, but based on Sigma's post my initial thought is that it sounds vaguely Monster Hunter-ish. Whether that's a good or bad thing I'll determine upon further research.

(Speaking of Monster Hunter, the MH Genome Rp is waiting on you, SD. ;) )

So, basically, this is The Stomping Land in first person, and with more stuff?

Count me in.

Though I will agree with Sigma that the whole "Dragonz and gunz" thing is a bit of a downer. At least, as far as I can tell right now. I mean, I'm still gonna look into it, especially because TSL is a no-go, but you know, criticism.

I've done some (admittedly quick) research, and yeah, in my opinion it's some sort of mix between MH and TSL. I'm honestly not sure if I'm more concerned about the mythic creatures and guns, or the fact that I saw use of the name "Brontosaurus". I mean, you can have people and dinosaurs together, even with dragons and guns around, but Brontosaurus? That's going waaaaay too far.

Of course, I'm also placing my bet that the island is some sort of "Genome gone wrong" type of thing, so how accurate the dinosaurs really are to what they are called could be very much up to debate.

Yeah, the creatures are not the most accurate. The Triceratops, Pteranodon/Pterosaur, Ankylosaurs, Raptor, Titanoboa, and Mammoth are definitely the most glaring creatures that have had some artistic liberties taken for them, but it looks to be more for cool factor than anything else.

Did some quick googling and found them, bask in their awesomeness or despair in their inaccuracies as you will:

Triceratops

Pterosaur

Ankylosaurus

Mammoth

EDIT: Of course after some more googling, they have things called 'Dino Dossiers' which the picture of the Mammoth is in. The species appears to be made up, which means their new species. That could very well imply a "Genome Gone Wrong" type deal...

@CS: Huh. "Who's scientifically redundant now?" indeed.

@Sigma: Well, seeing as we've got guns, dinos, mammoths, and more, personally I'm just going to file it under Rule of Cool. It still would be nice though if at least someone made an accurate and fun game with dinosaurs.

Well, I mean, there's Saurian which is basically Hell Creek simulator, and Crynosaurs which is basically person getting stuck in the Morrison Formation simulator. :P There's also Prehistoric Kingdom which is JPOG 2 for all intents and purposes.

As for this game, I don't find it particularly interesting. If it turns out to be good I might buy it later, but from what I've seen so far it doesn't seem too interesting.

Hmm, based on the opening with the dude messing with the metal in his wrist, and the middleish bit where he's flying to what appears to be a giant flying structure of some sort, I'm thinking this island/world is created by very bored aliens/future humans who have decided to play god with a heavy focus on a rule of cool.

a bit on the dragon I think:

By bringing sufficient rare sacrificial items to special Summon locations, you can capture the attention of the one of the ARK’s god-like mythical creatures, who will arrive for battle. These gargantuan monstrosities provide an end-game goal for the most experienced groups of players and their armies of pets, and will yield extremely valuable progression items if they are defeated.

Fighting a large god-like dragon as an end-game goal/challenge? I'm telling you guys, this seems VERY familiar somehow. :P

Oh and apparently this games goes on Early Access June 2nd, so I guess we'll know pretty quick how it is. And at the very least, the game is supposed to offer mod support so I'm sure somebody will create a mod to make the dinosaurs a little more realistic...

So I'm like super hyped for this game. More than I have been for a game in a while. Although I remain cautious, I'm digging the philosophy they have in making it. I found this on the Reddit:

Why the inclusion of mythical creatures and sci-fi weapons?

We've kind of said it before, but this game is not a byproduct of the thought "what can attract the most number of people so that we can have tons of sales!" or "if we exclude/include this thing, will it costs us sales or make x number of people not want to play?"

We're making something that we thought would be fun, exciting, and took a number of things we love about a number of genres of games and tried our best to find a way to mix them together that is both novel, interesting, and enjoyable.

We have a narrative, a story, a setting, a plot, these things are all reflected in the decisions we've made in designing every element of the game, and in general, we're not so much concerned about how our choices impact sales or things like that.

It's sad if people choose not to play because they're turned off by specific elements of the game that we've designed, but that's bound to happen no matter what game we make-- and we can't keep chasing down the people who say they won't play because of "X" because we'll never finish a game or even get one started, you know?

But this is also part of why we want to make mods widely available, to provide our whole editor to anyone who wants it, allow anyone to run their own server, etc. We know people who want a specific gameplay experience will eventually make that experience happen; they'll find that niche, and they'll enjoy our game the way they wanted, yeah? And that's what gaming is all about-- it's about finding a way to make the game you're playing yours somehow. There isn't a wrong way to enjoy a game, everyone's own unique experience is correct to them, and that's a great place to engage the fans, and promote/highlight the cool stuff they do, etc.

Hope that helps to kind of explain the overall philosophy over here. We love games, and we love playing games, and for people to play games. But we're making OUR game, and if you love our game and our setting and our creatures, please, make YOUR game, and share it with the world.

They also talked about why the creatures are somewhat inaccurate. One they pointed out that most of them are not the actual species that existed in the past. Two they wanted both people who only know about these animals from fiction to have just as good an idea about how they're going to act as people who know there stuff. They did say at least that they have done their research, at least based on fairly recent studies, and are aware of the differences.
