*Extremely late progress report* So, first of all, I am insane. I am currently the only person on the server that has a Giganotosaurus (Besides Sigma, but I gave him one), and yet I've already tamed SIX of them. And now I'm raising 2 baby ones so other people can actually get Gigas. I also raised 2 T.rex twins to adult. So, Cyprectus is a father now. And the mother is... a skeleton? Not sure how that works, ARK... This was also the week of the lost & found. First, I tamed a level 48 Giga that Sigma had spotted the day prior, and then lost it almost immediately after it walked into a forest while following my flyers. I came back with Cyprectus and demolished the entire forest, but did not find it. However, does anyone remember the Sarco I lost a whopping 27 days ago now? Well, earlier this week, while searching for an Anglerfish, I seriously found him at the bottom of the bloody ocean, somehow alive. I could not believe my eyes that I had actually found him. I'm certainly glad I did, as he ended up being very useful for taming and collecting ocean resources now that all my marine mounts were stolen... I also managed to tame the one true waifu, Sonata the Mosasaurus! I just wish there were more shades of blue dye... I also tamed a bunch of Kairuku to get an egg farm so that taming an Angler would be slightly less of a pain in the butt. I, err... might have gone a little overboard. Now, onto today. So, first thing's first. I finally managed to actually tame an Anglerfish. In between accidentally killing them for no reason other then their stupid torpor/HP ratio and not being prepared to actually tame the dang things, it took a couple days before I struck gold. But now I finally have an Angler. And also, I decided to take Eris out to the mountains to go kill some alphas. However, I quickly turned back as I saw a level 28 Giga, looking ripe for a tame. But when I went back, guess what I found. There he was, the Giga that had gone missing several days before, just standing out in the open, with his face inside of a rock. how the hell did I not see that before?! So yes, I brought him home, at long last. The Giga on the mountain is out of luck, however, as it was a male, and I don't have any use for those unless they are superior to a male I already have. Given that the last male I tamed for myself was 20 level higher then it in the wild, I can safely say I'm probably not missing out on much. Now, time for creature opinions! First up we have the Kairuku: Upon release, it was a nice addition. You could get tons of polymer just by running around and harvesting them with a good carnivore. However, when they nerfed that, it became a whole lot less potent, Now it's barely even worth killing them. But what about domesticating them? Well, let me just tell you, their only use is eggs. Their heating effect is not particularly potent, and even if it was, they are slow, unrideable and weak. You can't really go exploring with one as a companion to keep you warm. So basically, their usefulness is entirely reliant upon the usefulness of the Anglerfish. Let's see how it holds up. Anglerfish: I'm gonna be blunt here. The Anglerfish is simply bad. It lives deep in the ocean, so the only way you're gonna be able to tame one is either with SCUBA gear or a ton of oxygen investment. It also takes a lot of resources to tame. The level 116 one I managed to tame could just barely be tamed with 100 narcotics, and I was using kibble. Even a Rex takes less narco to tame. All this would suggest that it's a high level tame. But no. It's about the same speed as the Megalodon, deals the same amount of damage as the Ichthy and its HP is in between the 2. But its inability to have a saddle makes that irrelevant, as a saddled up Ichthy is more durable then it. It can carry more weight then the Megalodon, somehow. But that's not really enough to make it stand out, seeing as it's still not exactly the optimal beast of burden. So what about it lighting things up? Well, let me just say that on any server that allows for the use of the gamma command, that ability is already pointless, other then looking pretty. So, I tested how well it worked at the bottom of the ocean at the middle of the night. I guess it sort of helps. But not really. The illumination effect is not all that bright, and covers only a relatively small area. Not to mention, it requires you to stay near solid structures, otherwise you might as well not have a light. So, the only thing that could make the penguin useful is useless as well. Good job, Wildcard. |

I only have a pair of kairukus right now, but I think the idea is that you're supposed to breed them and farm them for polymer. That's what I intend to do. I'm just lazy and don't want to have to make a breeding pen. The Anglerfish is useless. The ocean isn't particularly dark anyways, but they do light up probably a small base in area on land. Luckily they are easy kills and one angler is giving me a good 40 angler gel when harvested with the pick. Granted I have harvest rate at 1.5x, but still. That's a lot. They are basically just good for fuel. I guess when aquatic breeding is a thing you can use them as water kairukus. Haven't tested compies, but they tame really easily, and from what I've heard larger swarms are really potent. I guess they are supposed to be counter to tranqing everything in someone's base? They just wake up so fast. Finally, were Giga spawns increased? I went to Far's Peak and tamed a level 60 (I'm on .5 for my difficulty so this is crazy high) rex, and I was very paranoid because there were five or six Gigas wandering around. Likewise, Plesiosaurs are everywhere now. I hadn't seen one until the Angler/Kairuku update and now I am finding more of them than Megalodons. |

The problem is, how do you farm the Organic Polymer by breeding Kairuku when the polymer spoils, in just 10 minutes to boot. |

Sounds like a pretty ridiculous strategy, but eh. I guess ridiculous isn't the same as ineffective. ![]() As for the spoil time, it seems I remembered that wrong. I thought the 30 minute spoil time was only there when you stored it on dinos. I guess they don't prolong the spoil time of that polymer after all. Doesn't exactly make it easier to stockpile, though. |

So I'm been playing a bit of ARK recently in single player doing a sort of a roleplaying play style that, I think, makes the game a bit more challenging. First off, I have changed the exp gain/gathering rates/tame speed to be more suitable for a single player experience. I have also installed the Mod map Valhalla. My god guys, this map is beautiful. I'll post some screenshots at the end of a few of the awesome views on this map. I say only a few because I have not ventured far from my initial spawn point haha Most of the rules I have implemented on myself have to do with what I can and cannot tame. I've allowed myself to tame most herbivores with the exception of the Bronto and Paracer. I figure, the herd mentality of most herbivores would allow for taming, akin to livestock and work animals. Plus, any animal above average in intelligence will be up for taming. This goes for Icthy's, Mesopithicus, and Gigantopithicus. I was much more strict on myself when it came to carnivores. The main stipulation is that they must be pack hunters comparable to or lower than Humans in terms of "power" in game. By that I mean being able to feasibly knock it out with your fists, symbolizing overpowering and asserting yourself as an Alpha over them. You can knock of a dilo, you can even knock out a raptor if you're able to dodge well enough. You are NOT punching out a carnotaurus or larger. And no, I am not going to punch out all of my tames, that's just the criteria I set for my playthrough. Medium to alpha predators are off limits. These include the Rex, Spino, Carno, Mosasaur, Plesiosaur, and Giga. TO hinder myself even more, I may not utilize the Raptor saddle, further limiting myself to spear/bow combat with dino AI backup. Any creature that could also not feasibly be tamed will not be. These include Beezlebufo, Pulminoscorpius, Megalodon, spiders, and anglerfish. These animals, in my opinion, are to primal to be tamed in the conventional way. I'm still on the fence about flyers. As soon as you take to the Air in ARK the game changes. No more romping through forests hoping a Rex isn't around the next group of trees. No more wearily wading through the swamp dodging titanoboas left and right. Flyers are basically god mode. Taming Dimorphodons is no issue, and I may allow myself to tame them and just not use the saddles for them. Currently, in my game, I've found a small hidden canyon of sorts. Not many creatures can scale the natural walls to get in and it's right on the beach. I set up a lean-to there and began crafting away. My first tame was a Dodo I found roaming my new home. A nice bright pink Male, level 85 (ended up at 95 post-tame because of the bad taming rate of berries and the fact that fists aren't the best at making friends.) As I began to progress, I found a pair of Parasaurs that were being forced into a rocky outcropping by a pack of dilos. I slaughtered the dilos but not before one of the parasaurs went down. I utilized it for hide and meat. I was about to do the same for the other, but I felt bad for it. It was being chased, had it's mate killed, and was still utilizing it's horrible ARK AI to continually run into the rocks. Poor creature. I walked up to it, looked it right in the eye, and wopped it on the head with my club until it passed out. I now had my first mount. Throughout the day, I happened upon a couple of lone compies which I tamed and made a part of my new crew (I did cheat a bit here. I think it's the oddest thing that you can only feed them prime meat, so i just through the meat I had into the ocean as an "sacrifice" to console prime meat in. I didn't have any left over prime meat, and wouldn't use this for any other reason in a normal play through). The beginning stage of an ARK play through it always the most fun to me. The excitement, the danger. That just gets lost as soon as you mount anything higher than a raptor. You can kill anything with a Rex, or even a carno. The only threatening thing at that point is a wondering Giga, which is meant to be a force of nature anyways. All in all, I'm enjoying this play through immensely. If anyone else is interested, in the near future, I may purchase a server and run this for us here if anyone would like to join me on my exploration/survival of Valhalla. If not, Tormund is content with traveling this unknown location all on his lonesome! Anyways, pics, as promised: Parasaur+Scenery 1 Parasaur+Scenery 2 Parasaur+Scenery 3 Looking forward to exploring The Parasaur's Pen Compy pack Saw this walking to my house as I was about ot log off. Haha, funnily enough, I have been toying with starting a new SP game myself. I might be interested in joining in if you did set up a server. It'd be fun to get into some multi-player hijinks again. Especially if we have rules set up like that to keep things dangerous and interesting. I just kind-of lost interest last time after we crossed the threshold where our only limitation to accomplishing anything was the amount of time it took. |

So I started my new SP game this morning (actually, I had started it a couple weeks back but basically hadn't done anything yet) and in the few hours I've played I've done good. Got myself a little water-side wood shack with expansions for a crafting building and pier in progress, as well as five dodos. My only predator problem so far had been an Argent (to confirm, I'm on the north beach, North Spawn 3 IIRC) but I just managed to spear it down before it killed me. Keep in mind I put the word "had" in there, because just as I was finishing placing some walls for my new building, about to stop for lunch, I spy a big ol' grey Tyrannosaurus roaming around part-way between me and the tree line. So next time I pick back up, I'm going to have to deal with that somehow. Man, I haven't even made a bow yet... although I probably have the mats for it, and I do have the engram. Arrows might be a little iffy, but if I ever leveled up making stuff I could learn how to make narc arrows, not that I probably have enough narcs to knock the thing out anyway. Mind you, if I did knock it out, I've got a lot of cooked meat on me, and with the taming speed increased I could probably tame it if I wanted to. Tl;dr, Rex at my doorstep. Not sure what I'm going to do. I fear for my dodos. |

So if that second creature was Arthopleura instead of Dimetrodon, I think Sigma would have just died of joy. We dodged a real bullet here, guys. (Also, you know this means that if we're ever all playing together on a server again, our base has got to have a bar, right? Because it isn't up for debate.) |

I'm getting on a good roll in my SP game now. The other day I built another expansion onto my current main base as a food/beverage area, only to discover how expensive beer barrels are to make. My first and foremost problem, which has been ongoing as I've been getting set up, is the lack of metal sources around my house. So I set out across the bay to the edge of the ARKtic to scout out a location and some tames. I ended up bagging me a Saber (though of a disappointingly low level, but still it's the first carnivore I've tamed this run) and a decent leveled Doei. While I was taming the Doei, I picked out a nice spot by the water on a little hill and only a sprint within the cold-zone and placed some foundations for the start of an outpost. Today, I started by taming a Trike to act as my transport for the project, and I'm quite happy with the results. Quite happy with my Trike, too, for that matter; a Rex spawned right next to us while I was chopping wood and we managed to beat it. I managed to finish my fort aside from the stone walls I plan to put around it, and have started furnishing the inside. I also tamed a pretty nice Anky, so soon I'll have my hands on lots of metal. I also remember to take a picture of my new fort, though I once again forgot to take a picture of my main house. TBH though, at this point the fort is probably the cooler looking of the two. Storage/crafting on the main floor, living area on the second, and that nice rooftop lookout to top it off. Its not that big, but I don't plan to ever give it full amenities such as power. All it's meant to be is a staging point for further expansion into the ARKtic, and then as an in-between/rest stop after that. |

anyone got reviews for dung beetle and dimetrodon? I haven't played this update yet but I heard both are pretty disappointing. |

It was a female. So naturally, you should know exactly what I named it. (Though TBH, if I get a better one -and I plan to- I'm going to transfer the name to it.) @Flish: I haven't even seen either yet in-game, so I'm not sure. It doesn't sound like the beetle is more than just okay, and I don't see the Dimetrodons being all that practical. Also I was just looking as I was typing this, and it turns out we've got another sauropod in the line-up; Titanosaurus. Looks like it's Bronto-sized, armored, tameable but immune to narcotics, aggressive, and very rare. Still not sure what I think of it as far as balance goes, but otherwise I think I kind of like it. |
