So, Sigma and I have been talking today about the idea of maybe trying to set up a private PvP server. Sort of the thought would be that we'd all go it solo and under a set of rules we could have some fun PvP shenanigans against and with each other, without all the undesirables of the internet. As I'm typing this Sigma and I are looking into the options and costs involved, which I'll leave for last since that's still ongoing.

Now I just want to say first of all everything is open to discussion and change, this is just what Sigma and I have discussed today as a possible base set of rules and guidelines and other ideas.

  • Spawn Points:
As I said we'd all be on our own, no tribes, but we could make alliances for team-ups. Just to keep us all off of each others throats at the start, what we're thinking is to have each of us pick a different spawn point, or if we want to spice it up have Random.org pick them for us. Depending how many of us are interested to start, we can either go by north/south/east/west if there's four of us, or we've also cut the individual spawn points into six options; W2, W1/S1, S2, S3/E1, N1, and N2. To clarify what we've done with that selection, we've removed swamp/snow spawns from the list and combined spawns that are nearly on top of each other. This'd just be for starting off of course; once things get going everyone is welcome to move elsewhere.

  • The Church/Neutral Zone
This is just an idea we discussed, not really anything important, but basically we'd have a little meeting place built on the rim of the Volcano just in case we ever needed or wanted it. Besides that, the crater of the Volcano would also be a neutral/no fighting/building zone.

Okay, on to the actual rules now...

  • One Main Base, Three Outposts
This is just a limit to prevent land-grabbing and balance out the protections granted to building by the rules. Aside from keeping to the spirit of one of your bases being your main base, there's really no definitions or restrictions on the outposts as far as size ect. goes. Three is just the number we decided was a good number to start with, and if we find we need or want more than that we can always change it later. It's also not a rule per-say, but is strongly advised that you mark your bases with signs and flag to denote their status and thus their protection under the rules.

  • -Base Protection
Leveling/completely destroying bases is strictly NOT allowed. Destroy what you need to get in ad out and any defenses, but no razing needlessly to the ground. This applies to main bases and outposts only. Any "war-structures" such as forward bases for a big raid (which for the record you are allowed and encourage to make) are fair game. This is why it's a really good idea to to make it clear which bases are your main base and outpost.

  • -No Killing Passive/Non-Combative Creatures
To break it down, if a creature is on passive -or otherwise isn't in the way or attacking you- it is against the rules to kill it. You are also not allowed to abuse this rule; if you line your walls with passives, then they ARE fair game. Making a separate/contained pen for passive creatures that is clearly marked is strongly recommended to keep them out of harms way if you don't want to risk them. If a passive gets caught in with a group of non-passives then I hate to say it, but it's your own fault. So really, just keep your passives separate and they'll be safe.

  • -Gatherer Protection
So Sigma and I are kind-of unsure how exactly to go about this, so this is very much up and open to input. Basically the goal of it is to give your dino protection when you're just out gathering with it. My idea basically is that you and your dinos are safe outside of a raid situation so long as you aren't near enemy territory, or if it's just you and a single mount just passing by enemy territory. If you're clearly bringing in an attack force or blatantly loitering around/spying, then you're fair game. Sigma was thinking of maybe using paint, possibly a specific color, to designate a "gathering"/non-combat mount. Or maybe a mix of the two, but neither of us is 100% sure on it. So yeah, please definitely give some input and opinion on this one.

  • -Taming
I actually just realized Sigma and I never touched on the topic of taming. XD I think we can all safely agree though to no interfering with each others' tames.

  • -Offline Raiding
Is allowed! HOWEVER, if you do, you've gotta do it as a break-and-enter stealth mission with minimum destruction and casualties. No bringing in an army of dinos, and no killing unless absolutely necessary. I.E. you broke in my roof and, oh look, I filled my halls with aggressive Dillos. In that case, then yeah, you can kill them. Basically in general, if you offline raid just don't be a dictator about it.

  • -Raiding Etiquette
So aside from not launching full-out attacks on someone while they're offline, this is just a general guideline again to not be a complete heel about things. You don't need to take everything that isn't nailed down just because you can, and at the least you should leave behind some basic supplies so your victim can get back on their feet. That said, if you know someone has a good stock of supplies at their other bases, then don't worry so much about cleaning them out at another base.

  • -Kidnapping
Quick and simple: Yes you can do it, but not while the victim is offline. At some point, the captive must eventually be freed, nicely or by self-inflicted death. The victim then has a one week grace period before they can be kidnapped again.

  • -"Thou shalt not storm thy friends bases with an army fifty-strong of Giganotosauruses."
    *Ahem* DG...
Giganotosaurus are banned from raiding activity. Period. You can have them at your base as guards, egg farming, or what-have-you, but you can not use them offensively in any way. Also, if someone such as DG does tame fifty Gigas and someone sets the all into a rage in their owners base, then that is a risk the owner is aware of and willingly taking by having Gigas. :P

  • -Quetzals
This is completely up for debate as Sigma and I don't know enough about Quetzals to say for certain. Sigma's thinking maybe just a limit of one Quetzal with a platform per person, while I'm wondering if we don't need a restriction on shooting (namely rockets) from Quetzals. Or maybe we don't need to do anything about Quetzals at all. Discuss and decide.

As far as settings go, we're both thinking to do the same as Skilled Soldier (tame speed boost, resource gathering boost). Now down to the nitty-gritty of it, from what we've looked at for server providers so far, it'd probably be between $26 to $36 a month. We're still looking at some of the exact details (well, mostly Sigma is looking since I'm not the most technically inclined xD) but it also kind-of depends on what everyone else is thinking too. Personally I might be up to covering some of the cost, but I'm not sure I'd really be able to justify covering all of it right now with stuff irl and since I'll probably working through the week regularly again within the next couple months and not have as much time for it. Maybe next fall/winter depending how things are going irl, but not really right now. So that's something we'll need to talk about if we want to do this.

So aside from the funding for it, the major points are who all would be interested in participating in the carnage, and what everyone thinks of the rules Sigma and I put together so far. (And hopefully I remembered everything. xD )

I just realized we might also want to have a rule for boats thrown in too.

-No excessive numbers of rafts per person. Don't try and out-boat the British Navy or anything; that just never ends well.

-Boats can be raided, but no leveling the entire structure or destroying the raft itself if you can help it. Unless the raft is being actively used in a raid against you -I.E. it's loaded with auto turrets and shooting you- then completely destroying it shouldn't even be considered as an option at all.

So Sigma and I are both antsy to know our spawn zones to start plotting our evil plots, so if at least DG (and hopefully you too DM, if you see this before we lose patience :P ) is on board for assigning spawn zones this far ahead, we're gonna go ahead and do that. We're also going to go with directions since there's just the four of us.

EDIT: We're also thinking that when we're doing it by directions that we aren't going to block off any spawns. So you can pick any of your directions' three spawns.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't plan on joining, at least not for now. My interest in ARK has diminished by quite a lot, so I'm not really willing to put so much work into building up and maintaining a new character and base when I could just play other games that require little to no grinding.

This is partly directed at DM, but also for the benefit of anyone else it interests. Since DG's not interested for the time being, I think we're going to have to shelve the server idea at least for the immediate future. Three people just really isn't enough to go with for PvP.

So what Sigma and I are thinking of doing, and we welcome anyone interested in joining us, is to take a shot at the Skilled Soldier PvP server (which, apparently, is a thing now). We shall be Neos Khan and Tehuti Khan (and hopefully also a Tromund Khan?), leaders of The Solar Horde!

EDIT: In-game flag pic! :D

Well it is going to be PvP that we're talking about, so kind-of the first rule is not to get too attached to anything, and in fact to expect that you will end up losing stuff. :P But yeah, if you want to join us we'd definitely take the help and try to look after your stuff as best we can. Also, Sigma and I haven't checked it, but the odds are likely it's a boosted taming/gathering server. So even if you lose a critter it shouldn't be that hard to replace.

Thinking of that, it'll be a see-as-we-go thing, but Sigma and I were both thinking to keep our eyes and minds open for the possibility of recruiting a few other player to the tribe if we can find decent people. The truth of it is, none of us are online as much as we'd need to be with this few of us in order to be competitive.

And I was going to just message this stuff to Sigma, but since I'm posting anyway I'll just say it all here for everyone.

For location at least to start, since Sigma was interested in trying the east spawns in the swamp I'm thinking maybe we could try there. Or at least take a look to see if anyone's there. Now the downside is that yes, the swamps are dangerous, but everywhere is. But on the upside, the swamps are basically designed to hide in and are a pain for any large attack force to move through. We'd also have easy access to Plant Species X so we'd be able to get some of them set up as soon as Sigma gets Large Crop Plots at lvl 30. Not to mention frogs for paste farming, and there's a mountain just to the north that we could eventually try going to for metal. Again we'll have to see what it looks like there on the server, but I have to think it's our best option.

Now, I'd talked with Sigma last night about some long-term building techniques and tactics, but I think I have an idea for our initial base layout. It'll be a 2x3 foundation, the back four having walls two high, and the front two only one high. One of the front foundations will be set up as our "air-lock" style entrance, but in addition to the usual pair of doors it will also have a door in the side into the other front room. This other little room in the front will be a spot for Sigma to set up a few crop plots growing narcs under cover, and also to try and throw off raiders breaking in, or at least make their work harder. However, the room is actually going to be two foundations, as I'm going to stretch it back one spot into the main room to so it actually has enough space for Sigma to at least get more than one plot in. While it might seem like that'd waste room in the main room, it won't be, as I'll put our bed on top of the crop-room ceiling to maximize the space. As we get further along the main room is going to become the core "vault room" of the base, and the crop room might need to be moved. Expansion will start with putting another layer of foundations around the existing base, thus putting more protection between raiders and the vault room. As I mentioned to Sigma previously, I'd also be inclined to put on a small indoor stable/pen attached to the base. I really don't want to start putting up traditional pen walls and making us that visible until we're ready for it, but at least that will give us a bit of secure parking for a couple critters.

Another thing we need to try and do differently than our previous PvP attempts is that we actually need to try and get in some early-game raiding if we can. Just focusing on building a big base like we did before is nice, but it's just as or more likely to get raided than a small one. Even though we can't take on big bases there's no reason we can't try and raid a few little huts as soon as we have the ability to. Every little bit helps as long as we aren't putting out more than we get, and especially when the fact of the matter is that we WILL get raided too. Kind-of cold, I know, but raid-and-be-raided is the nature of PvP. That said, I do also want to set a couple ground rules for our tribe, in addition to the general Skilled Soldiers rules of being respectful, no exploits, and no griefing.

-No killing other peoples' creatures just for the heck of it. If it's on passive and isn't attacking you, then leave it be. Killing it is a waste of resources for one thing, and there's frankly no need for it. I don't know if this falls under the "no griefing rule" anyways, but either way, I'd do it simply to encourage others to do the same. (On which note; while we do need some guards, if we have enough other guards or have critters in a stable, then putting them on passive is probably a good idea. Yes, they still might get killed if a raider decides to be a wipe, but at least the raider has the option to ignore them rather than automatically having to act at least in self-defense.)

-No flattening bases. Just break in, raid, and carry on. It's a nasty thing to do, isn't needed, and lastly is a waste of time if not resources too.

Remember, gentlemen; we are The Solar Horde! We are raiders, true, but we are not some mangey Huns who rape, pillage, and burns the lands in their wake. WE. ARE. CONQUERORS! And it is through both war and diplomacy that we will carve our empire out of the ARK! Should someone not wish to join the tribe itself, or we do not want them, then that is fine! For we can still forge an alliance, and an alliance, my friends, is a very powerful thing! Even the victims of our conquests might turn to join our cause, should we treat the with respect. Remember this, my people, every day and every time we go into battle! This is the code we live, fight, and die repeatedly by! For the glory of the Horde, and for the prosperity of the Empire!
[/inspiring speech]

Apparently there actually isn't a SS PvP server, so I did a bit of looking around and found one that looks like it should be good; SPQR Take a look to familiarize yourself with the settings, and more importantly THE RULES! Also look here for a few more of the servers rules which, for whatever reason, aren't on the other page. Also bear in mind that the server has a decay timer.

Sigma and I are going to spawn in and get the ball rolling tomorrow, so here's one last briefing before we all jump into the world of PvP.

-Sigma and I are going to spawn in at East 3, in the swamp biome. We'll need to scout the area to get an idea of what's in that area on the server, but our plan is to set up our first base in the swamp. It is a dangerous place, so be prepared and be on your game. If you have Stimberries, keep them on your toolbar to combat torpor.

-First priority out of the gate is going to be leveling up and unlocking engrams. With an increased level cap we should be able to each unlock all engrams in time, but we'll still need to divide roles between us to get stuff quicker. I'm going to put a focus on mostly construction, Sigma's going to focus on farming and guns, and between the two of us we should be able to cover everything. For everyone else; learn the basics and key engrams such as Narcotics, Ammo, Grenades, Parachutes, ect. Don't put much if anything into buildings at this stage as they aren't cheap, we won't be building that much, and I'll be covering that pat of the tech tree. For the most part, I'd recommend you guys save your points where you can for when you need them.

-I'd recommend putting your early levels into HP and weight, get both up to at least 200. Both are important to get started and you really can't go wrong with them. Beyond that, do as you see fit. Basically every stat is good to have at least some level into. Melee could easily be passed up if you wanted a dump stat, as eventually guns and dinos will be your main weapons. Just don't forget to put some points into fortitude as it comes in very handy and useful later on, though not as much earlier.

-Our plan is to stay small and hidden from the bigger tribes until we're far enough along to put up a fight. The nature of the swamp biome will hopefully help with this, but we still need to keep our buildings small and low-key as possible. As we advance in building technology, our first priority will be to set up a small safe room hidden within the center of the base. That way we'll have protection, but hopefully still remain under the radar until we're ready to make our move. On a related note, be very careful about torches and fires at night time.

-Despite what I said above, if there are other tribes/people of a similar level to us and we're in position to do so, I am inclined for us to try some early raiding to boost our progress. Just nothing to get us in any serious trouble with stronger powers.

-Keep an eye on the skies and ALWAYS have a parachute or two on hand if you can. The skies are where a lot of fighting goes on, and people will try and pick you up even off of mounts. Have chutes ready for when you're let go. Or, if you happen to have gotten a grappling hook, shoot it at the flier carrying you. It'll break you free of their grip and leave you dangling behind, safe from your assailant and free to open fire on them. Of course, you'll still need that chute for when you take 'em down.

Otherwise, we've all played ARK and should at least have half a clue what we're doing.
Go team!

I'm going to be working again tomorrow so I won't be on tonight, but hopefully tomorrow night unless I get asked to work Wednesday and/or depending how tired I am after work.

If either of you guys happen to be on before then for some reason, just work on leveling up, hunt, maybe throw up a few wood walls for now around the stable if you feel like it.

Also for all our non-Horde friends; Behold the masterful riding skills of Khans! #PassengerSaddlesRForChuuuuummmmps.

Steam just derped up on me so I can't link to the picture, but who else here thinks the new unnamed creature is a Giant Pangolin? Because I really want it to be a Giant Pangolin now that I've seen it and though of having a JGP in ARK. XD

EDIT: There we go.

It's very clearly a reptile, probably an Armadillo Lizard by the looks of it. Though I am intrigued as to why they are being so mysterious about it.
