Aztec DLC Looks like the Aztecs have been confirmed and it seems that if you don't pre-order the game, you'll have to wait ~90 days (3 months) post-release to get them. Leader: Same as always Leader Ability: Gifts For The Tlatoani (Luxuries yield additional amenities and boost the strength of your army) UB: Tlachtli (Entertainment District - Yield Faith and points towards Great Generals) UU: Eagle Warrior (Can turn defeated enemy units into Builders) (Can't enslave Barbarians, only units from other Civs) Civ Ability - Workers can be used to rush the building of districts New Wonder included in the DLC: Huey Teocalli (Great House of the Gods) better known as el Templo Mayor, the massive temple dedicated to the War God and the Rain God. It'll probably yield lots of faith (and will probably get snatched up by Qin Shi). and might yield some bonus to combat or something as it was a very important location for human sacrifices. Here's a blog with Concept and In-Game Art |

First Look: France France under Catherine di Medci, with a knack for espionage France's Grand Tour allows the French to gain tourism from wonders, as well as granting a boost to production of mid-game Wonders. Catherine's Ladies in Waiting allow for an advanced espionage system, gathering more information from other civs and their plots. Garde Imperiale, Napoleon's special army, had a bonus to wars being fought on their home continent and generate great general points with each kill. The Chateaux must be build on the banks of a river, and yield culture as well as additional bonuses if located near wonders. |

France and Aztecia both seem kind of weak compared to some of the other civs we've seen, particularly Egypt and Britain. Yah you get cultural and wonder boosts from France, but... So does Egypt, who not only gets a better version of both of those things (AFAIK their wonder/district bonus applies all game, and sphinxes give faith as well as culture), but also a better unique unit. Sounds to me like France is just a worse Egypt with a couple little things to make it different. I guess the espionage bonuses are nice, but if you're playing well you probably don't need extra information. Really the only thing about France that seems particularly useful is the tourism bonus. Aztecia's bonuses all kind of lean into building a powerful civ with good infrastructure and a good army, but as I'm sure many know all too well, it doesn't take long before you run out of tile improvements and districts to improve, and the lack of any cultural bonuses will make that come sooner rather than later. That said, they could also be very powerful as long as their ability's max bonus from luxuries is pretty high, otherwise it won't really be helpful. |

Japan seemed weak to me too. I'm okay with the Aztec design, but they don't really look great. The fact you need Casus Belli now probably makes them even more crippled, unless if they can get like, a Flower War casus belli or something. I guess in theory the way to play Mexico is an early game zerg rush with Eagles on whoever your neighbor is, use all the slaves obtained to build as many districts as possible, and then focus on science to get production, research and gold pumping. From there, I guess wait it out, settle a few Luxury colonies, and then swoop in again when you have the tech advantage, and continue to repeat this with an emphasis on snatching luxuries. All in all they seem sub-par and bland. Sadly, probably my least favorite Civ right now. I like France's design, but I agree that they're not super great. I guess they're good at mid-game conquest and at fending off Teddy, but otherwise I agree that China and Egypt outrank them. |

Brazil First Look Brazil under Pedro2 makes a return. Brazil gets bonuses to preserving the rainforest and building their districts around them. Pedro is good at hiring Great People and gets part of his investment back. The Carnival District replaces the regular Entertainment District and allows the building of City Project: Caranavl which gives amenities. UU is the Minas Geraes Class Dreadnought which gives raw boosts to ranged attack. It appears that Brazil uses Native American architecture, again. Overall a pretty sub-par Civ IMO. IRL Brazil cuts down rainforests instead of preserving them, the Minas Geraes never actually saw any notable combat except when they got hijacked by the slaves during the Revolt of the Lash, and having Carnival as a district feels weird, not the mention the architecture should probably be Mediterranean/European as opposed to native. An interesting thing is the Great Persons as now they're all Unique. In Civ V, the names just gave flavor to your headcanons, but now we can see that different Great People give different boosts, such as Joan of Arc creating a Relic, and Ching Shih giving bonuses to plundering trade routes as well as gold. |

Honestly seeing as GP's give different bonuses and everyone fights over the same great people now, bonus production to GP's is actually really useful for them. Not only can they prevent other civs from getting GP's, they can get a ton of small bonuses that help them out. The rest of their civ is sub-par, though. I think it's a case similar to the Greeks where part of their uniques is stupidly powerful so everything else is kind of meh in return. |

Yeah, I agree that with the new Unique Great People, this is a whole lot more interesting The fact you get part of your investment back so that you can use it on more great people makes it more rewarding. But the rest seems pretty lame, especially if jungles are still horrible terrain, and the dreadnought seems to be more for defense than anything else. Your comparison to the Greeks seems pretty accurate. Also Kabul, Afghanistan confirmed as City State. |

Das Civilization They seem... okay. Really the thing I like the most about them is that they got the ability of Vs' Mongolia, meaning a VI Mongolia has a fair shot at getting something actually useful and BA (like Scythia!). We'll see how useful their other bonuses and abilities turn out. |
