Sumeria lookin good. Always nice to have some fresh colors, and a civ that can do both culture AND science well is nice. Definitely want to play them. |

Probably the most epic civ in the game. Well, next to Scythia and until Mongolia gets added.

Arabia honestly feels up there with Egypt in strength. Strong UU, strong UD, borderline OP abilities, the only thing holding it back is that it can only have one of each district in a city, which means Scythia is probably going to be better at faith and Sumeria at science. |

So Russia is the new Shoshone, sort-of. Nice abilities, but their UD kinda stinks. |

I actually really like Russia. Honestly feel the abilities should have been flipped, though. Both really could work with just Russia at just about any point in history prior to the USSR, but I think that Peter was a bit more unique in his expanionism rather than his attempts to modernize Russia, which basically every Czar after Catherine tried to do. |

So I mean we all knew this feature was going to happen, but I'm kind of surprised no one has said anything about it yet. Not too much to say about Gorgo herself, culture for kills isn't a bad ability though when it isn't just limited to barbarians like V's Aztecs. |

V's Aztec Sacrificial Captives isn't limited to barbs though. I just killed a Babylonian Spearman and got 11 culture out of it. Though seeing an ability like that brought back again sure is nice, I'm particularly excited that using Gorgo changes the civ's color scheme and capital. As well, if I'm not mistaken, Firaxis has confirmed that Alt leaders can be in the same game together. |

So I got Civ VI and it desperately needs a mod to loosen up the horrendous amount of micromanagement in the game. Everything is either micromanaged or progresses horribly slowly. Districts take ages to build (even in cities where I can produce settlers in 4 turns It takes almost 20 for a district- and the price goes up with each era for seemingly no reason) the AI is terrible. It makes Beyond Earth's AI look good which is saying something because BE's AI was absolutely a mess, even moreso with its expansion release. Gandhi and Teddy always have the same hidden agenda because reasons. Take a guess what Gandhi's is. Strategic resources are now incredibly scarce. I was lucky enough to accidentally settle near one of the only two iron sources on my continent. Amenities are terrible and you need stupid amounts to keep a large empire happy. On the bright side, we already have a TSL map. |

Huh, that didn't take long for TSL. But yeah, I figured there wasn't much chance it wouldn't have issues. That's why I'm biding my time until it's hopefully fixed up a bit, and also until it's on sale because $80 for it is rather silly. |

so it's been over a year now since Civ VI and has it improved? Definitely and it is a much better game but it has some serious issues that I think just plain shouldn't be in the game that make it less enjoyable than it should. 1. The UI. God the UI in this game is a step down from Beyond Earth let alone Civ V, and Beyond Earth has a garbage UI. they tried to go with a sort of whimsical steampunk theme I guess? but the problem is that they try to fit so much crap onto such a tiny UI that it becomes very difficult to use. Furthermore, while you can hide the grid and resource output on tiles, it resets to default whenever you load a game or start one. This was a base-game feature and not something hard to implement in Civ V, why did it not carry over? a gnitpick maybe, but there are many problems like this in Civ VI that occur. There are some miscellaneous glitches that exist in the UI as well that are definitely not intentional, the most glaring being that whenever a civ completes a wonder instead of saying which one was completed it just says the first wonder another civ made was completed, which is incredibly confusing and useless. Then there is the map. God I hate the map in this game. It's tiny and very difficult to read to the point I question why it's even there to begin with other than because Civ V had it. The map has like 18 different colors for every type of terrain, if you can see the terrain or if it's in the FOW, and then every civilization has four colors that their land and cities show up as on the map- two for if they're visible ingame and two for if they're currently in the FOW. it's so difficult to read and it's not difficult to mistake one civ for another because their washed out colors end up being similar. Sumeria and Norway already have very similar colors, but the way the red and orange wash out makes them hard to tell apart on the map. 2. The civs are too samey. Sure there are a lot of different bonuses and uniques each civ gets, but for the most part they're not really effecting HOW you play so much as just giving you bonuses in certain aspects of said gameplay. They're things like, you get more food from trade routes, you get more culture from national parks, you have a production boost to wonders during a certain era, etc. all things you should be doing anyway that you just do better, rather than encouraging you to play a certain way. Now, that's not necessarily bad for some civs, but it's in the fact it's nearly EVERY civ that works like this that is the problem. I have not played any of the newer DLC (Nubia onwards) and I know they are a little better about this, but it's still pretty awful that base-game you're going to be playing the same way with most every civ. I can't think of any vanilla civ that is actually all that different from any other vanilla civ in playstyle. Once you get into DLC territory, you get Persia who is encouraged to make everyone hate them, Australia who is encouraged to spam cities in normally bad city locations, and Indonesia who is also encouraged to do the same but in this case islands rather than deserts and coasts. The new civs coming in Rise and Fall seem like they may be fairly unique, but we won't know for sure until we get the actual expansion because it does change up some other things. 3. The AI is awful still. It is better than it was but as of right now, the AI is extremely whiny but does almost nothing about it, and if they do attack their ability to attack is pretty bare-bones. Combine Civ V's already terrible assault AI with an AI that doesn't properly understand tile movement with the new terrain movement requirements and you get the Civ VI AI. they are next to useless unless they are far ahead in tech or have a ton of units. Furthermore, the AI seems to basically be incapable of liking a civ without you trying to make them like you, and it seems at times the only thing preventing them from attacking is that they'd rather denounce you for 200 turns straight and forward settle you. 4. The policy cards. This is honestly probably the biggest gripe, aside from some stupid bugs and weird ways things work (why does clicking on a unit make a ranged unit walk towards it instead of attack? why was this changed? Why do city states insta-raze cities? how is this in any way fair, especially with a UI that is far harder to register you have notifications on because of all the other clutter it throws in there like the tons of rumors you get and the wonders that got built 100 turns ago) I have with the game right now and why I don't play it as much as V. the game is all micromanagement to a huge degree. I am totally fine with micromanagement that MEANS something, like the districts and religion, but it feels like many things, especially the godawful policy cards, are absolutely meaningless and have such little effect on the game or have to be constantly tweaked yet do almost nothing or so little that I'd rather not really bother with them. Some of the policy cards are actually quite powerful, but it's the fact I have to sift through the hundreds of garbage ones and being constantly nagged by the game to change them out. To be honest I just hate the changes to the cultural aspects of the game in general because I feel like at most they're just... different, and at worst they're obnoxious like the policy cards. I guess the change to make wide really the only realistic gameplay method also added a lot of micromanagement, but I can't say that's necessarily an unnecessary one like the policy cards. That said, the extremely limiting gameplay options are kind of all stemming from the new micromanagement cards. It feels like they wanted you to be able to tailor your civ to your needs with them rather than have anything specifically helping turtle empires, but the bonuses are useless at worst and only moderately helpful at best, nothing game changing, just obnoxious that I have to keep changing these stupid little cards and that I have to plow through them for several useful things such as a few wonders and the casus bellis which are all mid to late game things for the most part. Honestly, If they had stuck more with the cultural tree being more of a secondary tech tree like it was originally implied to be and less of a "let's just plow through the next five useless civics to get the one good one". So there, those are my gripes wtih Civ 6 still. Do I think it is a good game? Yes, it is fun. That said, I think it's still very unpollished for being over a year old and getting an expansion, and I can't really say that it brings anything to the table that I find more fun than V. Really, I think my biggest gripes are the terrible awful garbage UI and the much lower flexibility in what you can do. |

I pretty much agree with all of that. Not saying there certainly aren't things about VI that I prefer over V, but they're unfortunately dampered by a lot of things that aren't so great. I do really like what the're doing with Rise and Fall and how it's looking to turn out, but it also isn't going to solve many of those underlying issues. Really all I hope for is that with time and expansions VI will improve and "mature" much like V did over its run. |
