Control an ant colony in a RTS-style game. In general, players have three types of units- workers, soldiers, and queens. Most ants can only have one queen, but an unlimited amount of workers and soldiers. Workers do low damage, but can dig out dirt tiles to make the nest larger, and also will carry food back to the nest automatically, unless a food item is marked to not be carried back. They also can create food storage and waste disposal tiles to store food and prevent idle malus from corpses and feces. Workers will automatically clean the nest and tend to food, but if you do not have enough workers, food tiles will be destroyed from lack of care, and waste will slowly injure ants in your colony. Soldier ants attack and that's it. They cannot eat on their own, but workers will automatically feed them. Soldier ants are on average, ten times stronger than workers. Queens do three things- they act as a "Research lab", where you can research new abilities for your ants. They can create worker and soldier egg tiles, and they act as a goal to defend your nest with. They also can dig, albeit slowly, until they lay their first worker egg. They have high health but are unable to attack, and are not particularly fast. Most ants can only have one queen. Base cost for workers is 1 food, and soldiers are 2 food. Food storage and waste disposal tiles are both 15 food. Workers take 10 seconds to hatch, soldiers take 30 seconds, and queens take one minute. Players have several different species of ants to choose from, each with their own ability and stats. * Dinosaur ant (Dinoponera quadriceps) above average health and above average attack. A unique playstyle that can give an advantage in the late-game, but can cripple if not handled properly in the early game. The inability to research can also cripple the Dinosaur ants if they do not act fast. Worker Health/Damage: 100/35 Soldier Health/Damage: 250/65 Queen Health: N/A Does not have a queen unit. Instead, start out with five worker units. All units can place egg tiles, but build them at half speed a queen does. Colony is destroyed when all worker units are destroyed. * Honeypot ant (Myrmecocystus mexicanus) small but somewhat bulky and tough ants that can use their ability to grow the colony quickly and lower waste, allowing for easier colony maintenance. Worker Health/Damage: 150/25 Soldier Health/Damage: 200/55 Queen Health: 1000 May not build food storage tiles. Instead, workers will automatically store food in their bellies. The more food stored, the slower the ant is. workers storing food do not cost maintenance like food storage tiles, and do not produce extra waste like storage tiles. *Army Ant (Eciton burchellii) ants with heavy caste dimorphism, the workers are much smaller than the soldiers. Their ability can help the colony grow quickly, and their powerful soldiers are exceptionally strong. However, their workers are weak and need guarded. Worker Health/Damage: 50/40 Soldier Health/Damage: 300/80 Queen Health: 1000 Workers complete whatever task they did first 50% faster than normal. *Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta) strong ants, but rather glass cannon-ish, their ability allows them to greatly expand in colony size mid-game. Worker Health/Damage: 55/30 Soldier Health/Damage: 150/65 Queen Health: 300 May create new queens for 60 food. *Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex badius) similar to fire ants in that they have high attack but mediocre health, they do not get the growth bonuses of them, instead being able to create vast and complex nests for defense. Worker Health/Damage: 75/25 Soldier Health/Damage: 175/60 Queen Health: 1300 Workers dig at double the rate. *Trapjaw Ant (Odontomachus bauri) A tricky ant to use and eliminate, they do not grow as quickly as other ants but are also fairly tough. Worker Health/Damage: 100/35 Soldier Health/Damage: 220/80 Queen Health: 750 Start with five queens in random locations on the map. Worker and Soldier prices doubled. *Leaf Cutter Ant (Atta colombica) Similar to the honeypot ant and with the potential to be more powerful in the late game, they take longer to get going. Their stats also are more average than the honeypot ants. Worker Health/Damage: 100/30 Soldier Health/Damage: 200/55 Queen Health: 1000 Instead of food and waste tiles, workers can build "farm tiles" that cost 30 food. They create food from both resources taken to the nest, and waste, but grow at only 75% the speed of food tiles. However, they can hold double the food of a food tile. *Dracula Ant (Amblypone silvestrii)) A frail species and a slow grower, these unique ants get bonus food for free from their larva, as well as the potential to survive without their original queen at the cost of the colony growing slower. Worker Health/Damage: 100/25 Soldier Health/Damage: 200/30 Queen Health: 1400 worker and soldier eggs produce 1 food per second, but grow at half normal speed. After the death of their queen, Dracula ant workers may place a queen ant egg for 10 food, though they build it very slowly. *Slave-Making Ant (Rossomyrmex proformicarum) This species is not the strongest in health or attack, but it makes up for this with its strong ability which can quickly snowball in the late game. Worker Health/Damage: 100/25 Soldier Health/Damage: 200/65 Queen Health: 900 Upon destroying a colony, all workers of that colony become slave-making ant workers. *Driver Ant (Dorylus molestus) A very powerful species, the driver ant's ability however, if anything, is a handicap to them, making them larger targets. However, their high health and attack makes them tough opponents. Worker Health/Damage: 200/33 Soldier Health/Damage: 400/75 Queen Health: 1000 Upon the death of the queen, all units join the nearest colony. Workers and soldiers move at halved speed outside of the nest, and research costs and times are increased by 25%. *Bull Ant (Myrmecia gulosa) This unique species has several traits that allow them effective defense in the early game, that still carries on into the mid and late game to a lesser extent, meaning they still can have the upper hand against early-game species without being completely wiped out in the late game. Worker Health/Damage: 150/30 Soldier Health/Damage: 230/70 Queen Health/Damage: 700/150 Queens may attack. All units deal double damage and take halved damage when on their own, and will automatically target opponents from double the distance of other ants. Mechanics There are three main nest mechanics that are vital to progressing through the game. The most vital nest mechanic to understand is Waste. 10 waste is produced per minute by ants in the nest, and an additional 1 waste is produced per minute for each food resource stored in a food storage tile. Not removing waste will initially slow down all ants in your colony, eventually killing them over time if the nest becomes too dirty. Waste "Resistance" scales with the colony size, with larger colonies being more resistant to the effects of waste, though in extremely large colonies it can become impossible to sustain. The second most vital mechanic is Food. All units require food to function, and all units and tile improvements (food storage, waste disposal, etc.) require food to build. Without food, units will die. Queens must be fed every 10 minutes or will begin to slowly die, workers must be fed every 5 minutes, and soldiers must be fed every 15 minutes. At the start of the game, the first ten units are free, not including the queen, allowing you to build ten of either workers or soldiers to hunt for food to feed the colony. Workers will carry food to feed hungry ants automatically, as well as to storage tiles. The third mechanic is Research. Researching is something that one queen at a time is capable of doing. Researching causes that queen's food intake to be doubled for a period of time, after which buffs will be applied to the colony based on what was researched. Research also has an original base food cost, though this is usually very minimal. Researchable abilities (base cost, research time): *Frisk (10 Food, 30 seconds)- Will reveal the number of each unit type of an ant's colony on the first kill of an ant from that colony. *Exoskeleton (15 food, 1 minute)- All units have health increased by 50%. *Strong Jaws (10 food, 1 minute)- All units have attack increased by 50%. *Speed-Growth (20 food, 1.5 minutes)- All eggs grow at double rate. *Clean-eaters (50 food, 3 minutes)- Waste production from all sources halved. *Lean-Eaters (50 food, 3 minutes)- Food upkeep cost for all units halved. Building costs remain the same. *Roulette (25 food, 1 second)- Must have researched every other ability first. Has a % chance based on the amount of players in the game to either give a 50% increase to attack and to halve damage taken for 2 minutes, or to kill 50% of your workers and 25% of your soldiers instantly. |
