when I try to turn on my desktop everything lights up normally, the fans spin etc... but my monitor reads
" no input detected, go to power save" and goes pitch black.

my monitor-tower cables do run through the graphics card [ 9800gtx+] so I am completely uncertain as to which of the 3 is problem ( cable, monitor, graphics card)

anyone got some experience with this>

you have to narrow down the problem first. I doubt it's the monitor, but its possible. Try any of these 3 to see if its the video card: use another video card, use onboard if u have it, or put the video card in another computer. To see if its the monitor try hooking it up to another computer or laptop. It could also be the power supply or motherboard. Buy a video card or power supply from an electronics dealer put them in and if they dont work you can return it (at least at Best Buy you have 30 days).

I tried a different monitor / set of cables and that didn't work so yea it's something in the tower. I honestly don't think I'll be bothering with narrowing it down and just returning it since it's still under warranty.

depending on where u bought it i know best buy's policy. Unless its within 2 weeks, then you have to wait a MINIMUM of 2 weeks to ship out to server. Or you can ship it to the manufacturer.

Depends on the item, I'm not positive on all the computer items.

Try unplugging the power cord to your tower for 20 mins, plug it in again, boot up and see what happens.

Reset your computer's cmos.
this always works for me.

pull the little watch-battery out of your motherboard and put it back in 10-20 min later for great success.

I've gotten this problem before, unfortunately it was only when the power supply couldn't fully juice the GFX card.

check and see if that is the problem?

The restocking fees are for larger items mostly like laptops. I know for sure that you can return power supplies, not sure about video cards
