http://g4tv.com/videos/50733/hacking--jailbreaking-with-george-hotz/ Thought some of you would find this cool. I'm OK with people hacking for the sake of discovery or in order to enable more options but the ddosing and in game cheating hackers are lamers!! On a side note, this guy is actually a distant buddy of mine (shared a bs elective with him in hs, he was kind of really quirky so I wasn't like best friends with the kid). I haven't spoken to him ever since he was a first year at Carnegie Mellon but apparently he's being sued by Sony for causing up trouble with the PS3. p.s. he used to make fun of teachers all the time with that cocky attitude pps: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/ibms-watson-supercomputer-destroys-all-humans-in-jeopardy-pract/ |

How telling that he is continuting to buck authority now Developers seem to freak about this sort of stuff but i don't know how much it really even affects sales. The kind of people who would hack a ps3 or wii are far from your average joe gamer. You also find this corporate concern with the whole DRM in games thing, maybe in the movie/audio industry, itunes maybe, maybe with the wii homebrew stuff i guess. some people want it to be so 'if i buy it then its mine and i can do what i want with it'. people like sony don't like that, cuz often console makers sell their console for a loss and make up profits on things like peripherials/games/system content/stuff that goes onto the ps3, i think. i came across this and apparantly the same sort of issue was had over automobiles too, http://blog.fosketts.net/2010/07/29/walled-gardens-gilded-cages-repair/ , 'walled gardens' are not exactly a new concept, and consumers never like or benefit from them as far as i can see. Long term i don't think the 'open access' or w/e trends will stop, people want that stuff, and therefore developers/producers just have to adapt, and you can see some have with some examples like economic models in minecraft, that humble indie bundle or smoething, various music artists have done 'name your own price' stuff. i think the trend will only accelerate as a place like china, with billions of people, becomes more affluent to the extent they can afford more common computers and ipads/digital hardware and such, but not affluent enough to buy all the valuable software accesseries. |

As far as that "IBM" challenge. It's obvious to see Jeopardy was just sponsoring IBM. Of course it has to make them look good. The dude knew all the answers too but of course the computer got buzzed in first (along with the cheesy jokes) PC's have really good sense of humors you know. It was set up, pure and simple sponsoring and advertising, nothing more. Once again, Hacker (human) > IBM.

I think the story there is that the computers are starting to "figure" out human language which they couldn't do before. For example: a bat is either a baseball bat or a flying mammal but a computer wouldn't be able to differentiate between the two, now Watson is able to put words into context (even detecting sarcasm to an extent) and they wanted to test it on Jeopardy. Sponsoring? maybe. Advertising? Def. still cool tho It is addressing the problem of the complexity of human language in general. Remember the program Smarter Child? You would talk to the "robot" and it wouldn't be able to hold a conversation. Slowly, that is changing but sheer processing power is still the limiting reagent. |

Conversations are only what, i'm guessing less then 20% words. Human language is any written or spoken form of communication and mostly body language. Computers will never even be able to come remotely close to the human language even with a 100% accurate grasp on all known written/spoken languages. Even then i made a new language. 8=====> haha computer you don't know what i'm saying unless i tell you. Edited by i-deR, Jan 16 2011, 06:25 PM.

That is why we need to develop artificial intelligence my friend and not rely on the sheer processing power of our modern day "supercomputers" to conduct 500000 algorithms in order to figure out what "hey you want ice cream" means but maybe that means one day we will end up in Zion :O |

Artificial intelligence (to be on a human level) which is impossible, would destroy us. Intelligence only comes from survival and everything is based on that. If it lives then it's not artificial and it will be fighting for it's survival which would make it highly competitive against us. Edited by i-deR, Jan 16 2011, 06:23 PM.

If the machines have higher intelligence like humans tho.. one could argue that they would be ethical and we could work something out with them. Furthermore, I am assuming scientists will somehow install control measures accounting for the need of survival, even in machines p.s. It would be very interesting how they program the machines if artificial intelligence does come to exist. We, as biological entities, have physical needs like sex, food, etc. The machines would need some physical needs like electricity and maintenance but would they have the urge or primal instinct to propagate themselves (like in the matrix with the little indian girl).? Also, I don't think any of this stuff would be used for commercial stuff (like a slave robot to clean up and cook for you)... we, as the general public, would probably never see things of this kind since it would just take one smart guy like my hs buddy to break into it and re-program the machine to do w/e it's funnny.. we're against gay marriages right now but maybe in like 2000 years we would be against machine-human relationships and I'd laugh if white-painted machines look down upon black colored ones.. how original I also think with the advent of bionics and cybernetics that, one day, we might lose what it means to be human. We might be able to have our brain placed into a machine body and be able to live for a longggg time and we will be able to "download" massive amounts of information into our brains which would made our entire education system mute but make research more important |
