Man of steel may have poorly executed several things. But it was a very sophisticated movie from a thematic/archetypal development perspective. Way better than the garbage like Avengers and Iron Man.

was pretty dark for a superman movie tbh.
It was kinda dumb how much the chick, the scientist, and the military dude kept popping up throughout the movie. Pretty sure irl you dont go from digging things in the north pole to driving a heli into things.

Criticisms:
-Some cheesy and poor dialogue at times (anyone cringe at "he's kinda hot" line?)
-Movie doesn't lay the ground rules for superman and the kryptonians. I mean they sustain so much damage then Zod dies from a neck snap. That's ok, but I prefer it be explicit about their powers and how they can be killed.
-Way too much action. Intense and fun nevertheless.

Pros:

General Zod as the classic tragic hero recalls Shakespeare's Brutus. Pwerful speech at the end. Very good characterization.
Very good origin story and alien invasion story.
Bases Superman's story on the Passion and the Messianic archetype.
Russel Crowe, nuff said.

And the Zod dude. Wow. The line at the beginning where he goes, "I WILL FIND HIM" was epic, believable, and sent chills down my spine - really felt it maaaaan

I really didn't appreciate the "he's kinda hot" line idk why they put it in but it's just 1 line.

was actually expecting there to be a lot of action/explosions considering zack snyders previous movies anyone who went into this movie expecting differently, have you even seen the watchmen, or 300?

I can't comment on the second con because I've never really read the comics so idk.

kevin costner and russel crowe had t1 acting in this though

Man of Steel 7.5/10 - I've seen the previous Superman movies and this was a hell of a lot better. The fight scenes were pretty badass although they sometimes went a bit overboard with the effects. Superman or Kal Al didn't really have much to say yet made it even more badass to be honest. Every time Lawrence Fishburne had a scene I instantly thought of his whore of a pornstar daughter. I personally thought they could of picked a better person to play Lois Lane in my opinion. Overall a good watch, just a bit long. The movie dragged on a bit at parts but it was good nonetheless.

Since Ive watched practically every movie recently released under the sun. Ill give em some reviews guys. IDC for spoilers so they maybe all over here, tread lightly.

Now you see me.

I came into the movie, totally expecting to hate it. From the trailers, I had the impression that this was some actual sci-fi with magic. I was taken aback and very surprised to see that the movie was actually totally grounded. Really liked that. The performances were solid, none were weak, always a good thing. I was actually enjoying the movie, until it starting getting slightly too repetitive and predictable (in its assumed unpredictability - they hammer the point that its unpredictable making it as predictable as ever). However, what would have otherwise been an awesome movie was COMPLETELY ruined by the reveal at the end. Others I watched it with disagreed and thought it was intelligent. IMO, the reveal was completely internally inconsistent with the presented narrative. Poorly executed reveal, I give this a 6/10. If you walk out before the last 5 min you'll actually really like the movie.

Fast and Furious 6

The Rock, Vin Diesel, Ludacris, other black guy, etc. reunited in perhaps the best iteration in the series yet. Awesome action, often straining on the unbelievable side of things. Good, though typical, narrative bogged down with the typical feel-good simple morality the movie tries to drive through way too bluntly. Poor CGI at times, the jump on the highway scene by Diesels character was just dumb, as was the endless runway for the final set piece. But man, the end credits scene.... daaamn. Great entertainment, often poor characterization/moralizing, etc. 7.5/10

After Earth
Hot garbage, walked out at the intro monologue to see another movie. Do not see.

Redemption
Atypical Statham action flick, with the exception of the same kickass fighting were all accustomed to. Quality performance for this action star for hire. Story is way too predictable for my taste, but it's got this nice, tranquil feel to it. I recommend a rent at the very least. 6.5/10.

A Good Day to Die
Worse in the series, please do not watch. 3/10.

Man of Steel
Truly great movie. Every actor delivers convincing performances. Biggest problem with the movie are the quasi-endless action scenes and the interminable appearances of typical Hollywood stereotyped characters in places they should not be (aka the scientist, the military man, the love interest - they are everywhere, in fights, on spaceships, fighting the bad guys from the arctic to new york or wtvr - it gets comical at that point). Russel Crowe is awesome, the special effects are great too. The characterization of General Zod and Superman was incredibly well crafted. They aren't antitheses so much as mirror characters with slightly different "defects". General Zod is the typical tragic hero ala Brutus, while Superman is set up according to the Messianic archetype with a lot of the narrative being akin to the Passion account (The movie subtly drives the Superman = Jesus connection with at least two shots of Superman in crucifix position, the confession scene which mirrors the garden praying thing by Jesus, and of course him giving himself up sacrificing himself for humanity being an evident mirror of Jesus giving himself up to the roman authority, etc.). Smart movie, raises important and great moral questions, but the script can be weak at times - humanity is represented by the American, stereotypical characters abound, pseudo-scientific babble is rife (ugh).

8.5/10

Oblivion
Awesome visuals, really awesome best watched in cinema. Tom Cruise with a solid performance as usual. Good visuals once again. Solid story, lots of good twists. Goes from post-apocalyptic story to alien invasion story to... Good movie. Slow plodding and thoughtful which I also liked. Awesome visuals.

You didn't see the similarities between Jesus and Superman? There's so many and there's several biblical connections with the characters in the story. All of course not detailed in this movie, I quickly just found a website where a blogger posted some that he caught. There's a lot more, there was an article in CNN that explained how this movie was released early to churches, I don't see how this is news to you. The story of Superman was ripped from the story of Christ as the story of Christ was ripped from many ancient Greco-Roman and Egyptian stories.

Similarity #1: The Names
In the Superman mythology, his father’s name is Jor-El, and Superman’s Kryptonian name is Kal-El. The connection here is the extension of the name, “El” In Hebrew, “El” literally means “God” or “god.” This is no mistake. In fact, the creators of Superman (Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster) were Jewish. Although at first it was spelled “Kal-L” it was very soon changed to “El.” So it is obvious that they are making a religious connection here to reflect their power & might. Since both Superman & his father both share the “El” in their name, it helps you to remember that Superman is the direct son of the Father (Jor-El).
In fact both, The Bible and the original Action Comic Book had Jewish writers originally tell there story.

Similarity #2: The Birth & Youth
As most know, Superman was sent to Earth by his father. Their planet was facing destruction, so Jor-El sent his “only-begotten” son to Earth, not to destroy it mind you, but that it might be saved (and Kal-El will be saved from destruction). In fact, Jor El shows us that Earth has promise, and that the people can be a “good people.” Here is a direct quote that Jor-El says in the Superman movie (played by Marlon Brando): “Even though you’ve been raised as a human being you are not one of them…They can be a great people Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son.”
This is interesting because Jesus Christ says of himself, “I am the way, the truth, and the light…” We see the Father’s compassion for these “Earthly” creatures. At the same time, Jesus was with us, but wasn’t from us. He was from heaven, from the father. This resembles Christ so much. He is sent to Earth from “Heaven” to be a savior to mankind. His true “Father” isn’t of this world, and he is raised by adoptive parents, who are very religious people born under Jewish Law. Superman is the same way. His adoptive parents are portrayed as very loving & king people, and no doubt religious, God-fearing folks.

Similarity #3: They Both Had to Learn from the Father, or Do the Father’s Will
Jesus has a mission on Earth, to be the savior of Mankind. At a young age we see a story in the bible about Jesus staying behind during a trip with his parents. When his parents noticed he wasn’t there, they freaked out. When they found Jesus, he was with various religious people. He simply responded to his parents, “I must be about my father’s business.” Then, we see Jesus again right before his ministry. What does he do? He goes into the mountain and fasts for 40 days. He is tempted in every way, yet holds to God’s will. These parallels are seen in Superman. His father has a definite mission for him-to save Earth & protect it. Superman does his father’s will, and as a result Earth is saved from all sorts of evil. Not only that, but Just as Jesus went to be alone in the mountain, Superman is isolated in the “Fortress of Solitude” where he learns all about his father & his mission in life. In fact, in the movies, we see Clark Kent going to the fortess before ever becoming Superman, and he comes out as Superman after his “training”. One could argue that Jesus went up to the mountain, and came down to start his ministry as the Christ.

Similarity #4: Unnatural Power & Abilities
Jesus Christ had the ability to do above-human things on Earth. He could heal the sick, turn water to wine, walk on water, knew many future events (his death), performed various miracles, and more. Superman is the same way. He has super-human abilities (strength, vision, flying, etc.). He has these because he came from a “Father” with similar nature.

Similarity #5: The “Father” Talks to Them By a Voice
We see various times in the bible that Jesus is spoken to, or of, by the Father. When Jesus is baptized, God says, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” When Jesus is on the mountain & transfigures himself, we hear God again saying, This is my Son, listen to him.” We never actually see God, but his presence is definitely there. All we hear is this loud & commanding voice from above. In that same way, Superman is always talked to by his “Father.” When he is in the fortress, Jor-El always communicates with Superman by a loud & commanding voice coming from the Fortress itself. He always calls Superman “His Son.”

Similarity #6: Both Superman & Jesus Were “Righteous”
We are constantly reminded of Superman’s general goodness. He geniunely cares for people, and always seems to do the right thing. That is why some call him, “they blue boyscout.” He tries to see the good in people. He also saves everyone, including his own enemies. When people have done wrong, Superman still saves them. He is always there to help. Jesus is similar. We see Christ doing good to those who have done wrong (such as the prostitute). He saves that one criminal hanging with him on the cross. He saves all those who, even though they did wrong, are willing to repent. Even his own enemies, as they are beating him, Jesus replies, “Forgive them father, for they know not what they do.”

Similarity #7 Both are “Glorified” or “Given Power” in Heaven (Not in the movie but in the story)
After accomplishing his Earthly mission, Jesus is resurrected to Heaven and is given authority & power by God. He is seated at God’s right hand. So in heaven, Jesus is given “strength, power.” Superman is the same way. When he goes to heaven, he gets “Strength.” How? Not from the Father, but from the Sun. The sun heals Superman, and gives him his strength. Heaven is often referred to as “space.” In fact, there are 3 heavens in the bible. The sky over the Earth, outer space, and the dimension in which God dwells.

Death and Resurrection
The final comparison between Christ and Superman is how both of them died to save the world and came back from the dead. Christ died on the cross to abolish sin from humans, saving us in the afterlife while Superman 'died' lauching a collosal hunk of Kryptonite infused land into deep space to save the lives of millions of people, and the world from Lex's evil plans (also interesting to note that he falls back to earth with his arms outstreched as if he were on the cross). Christ is buried in a tomb and is discovered missing three days later as he had resurrected from the dead to speak with his disciples. Superman flat lines in a hospital and goes into a coma while the world waits eagerly to hear whether he lives or dies, until one day a nurse enters the room and he has dissapeared. Superman is last seen telling Lois that he will always be around, much like Jesus had told his disciples before.

In response to all of that there is only one comparison i need to make before retiring to the actual religion sub-forum and that is, superman and aliens don't exist in time or space and Jesus does.
