Named after the authors of a 1999 paper by Cornell University professor of psychology David Dunning and his then graduate student Justin Kruger, the effect describes how those who really aren't very good at something overestimate their skill while those who are experts tend to sell themselves short.

The reason is that the more skilled you are in some complicated task (the effect is more prominent for difficult, complex tasks), the more you understand that there's stuff you don't understand. Or that you haven't mastered.
basically if you think you're good at something you're probably really bad

blade you can post screenshots of you beating people like louie in 1v1s as much as you want (seriosly with your sound, set up, and stopwatch you shouldnt lose a 1v1) but it doesnt change the fact that he is 20x the player you are.

You can't accurately reflect about your own opinion of yourself because you're not good enough.

This doesn't really apply to a competitive video game w/ a good skill ranking system around it. The goods rank high and the bads rank low, so one's self-opinion doesn't matter much. Sadly HPT doesn't accurately reflect game skill, so we're left with 50 page long 'who is the best' threads, etc.

There comes a point when one has exceeded potential and everyone's skill becomes baseline.

I still feel like I suck at Halo for the simple fact that I haven't played in so long. That, and even though it's the fastest way to get better, playing with people with a higher skill level than you, it's real discouraging when you go 0/∞. :(
