Being stared down by law enforcement drones in military gear is what I’m used to at my local suburban mall. Only because this crazy world we’re living in demands it, with psycho twenty something mass shooters and Al Qaeda. Of course many of the countless drones in the movie are robots, just like the one DARPA is working on, real life terminators, able to run and jump and ostensibly, anything else. That is one thing among many this action / sci fi movie got right. The story was fairly interesting and relentless, but by the end the lead actors eyes would have be swollen shut from fist fighting, not looking perfect. There is two major fallacies concealed in the plot and structure of, at the very least, this movie. I’m talking about superficial, even pornographic entertainment and a plot device suggestive of a real life exploitive military industrial complex, the ladder of course very reminiscent of the Iraq War or the war on terror. Saying such is a lie told by the weak, that the strong do not, in reality, protect them and their freedom. So at best, storytelling produces meaningful commentary on our lives, and at worst, perpetuates damning lies. Certainly there is a definition of beauty and success in our culture that is humanly impossible to deny. I think it is very fashionable to seek health and fitness. In this there is reality versus entertainment, art imitating life by the temporary and superficial versus the transcendent and helpful. I liked this movie because it made statements about the brevity of life and our choices, be they relevant, or not. I think the first two of the Christopher Nolan Batman films did that too. But again, this movie is a product of a Hollywood and society that increasingly fails to see the contradiction between sex and lust, disposable relationships, worth and waste, good and evil, life and death. The Chick-Fil-a thing in the news this week is a good example of so-called human rights and choices far exceeding their design. The futuristic pace of change in technology and human behavior depicted in this movie is a good reason to be morally challenged because those advances will certainly be outpaced by reality, like much of the science fiction in the last 150 years. It was very entertaining. I liked the romantic aspect, I liked the combative ex- spouse element. I liked the eastern decor. Of course they would jump on top of the moving elevator boxes, video games taught us that. I loved the flying cars, like the small quad rotors of today, and the militarized UAVs, like the ones in Terminator 2. Surely we might see those things in our lifetimes. Hopefully the implanted communication technology and 3 breasted entertainers will be more useful than in this movie. |
