NFL players and professional athletes in general are held to a higher standard because they serve as role models for their communities. |

that's some bullshit just saying But on Chalupa's point, it doesn't matter that they heard it through 'the grapevine'. The video shouldn't have been leaked to the public but shit happened and it was recorded. Same thing would apply for any crime probably. Rice could make a comeback. Other professional players have done it. I just find it to be kind of shitty that the NFL interfered in their lives to such an extent. How long has Rice been with that girl? 10 years? I'll assume that you're right and as a consequence of this role-model position, they're expected to behave a certain way and if they don't, they may face consequences more harsh than appropriate. Let's assume that these NFL players are in fact influential on the public and this disciplinary action was in response to the values the public holds on these members. I don't know if it's worth noting- but it's likely influential to youth primarily. When an NFL professional (not exclusively of course- it applies to other sports leagues) breaks the rules, punishments may be more severe than typical based on that status. What does that mean? It's a shift of responsibility not for the general public, but for athletes. It begs the notion that all of these people are susceptible to following the leader, and by the way society handles these things, youth could interpret it that way and behave correspondingly. Shouldn't responsibility be on the professional AND the general public? The unfair treatment of sports professionals like that perpetuates that stupid shift of responsibility. The professional should be treated fairly, not irrationally due to potential public backlash. Maybe I'd be a bad PR agent, but I say fuck people. They should understand the nature of man, consider the various circumstances, and develop their own intelligence(s) enough to not follow people in their wrong choices. Should a committee not stand up for itself against stupidity, if capable of seeing it as such? If the NFL holds these standards, it might be a bit different. It is a private organization and it seems there is usually some gray area in the way groups like that conduct their business (e.g. boyscouts of America.) |

that was a very thorough analysis opeth, and i tend to agree with you. i think its unfair to the athletes to suddenly be squeaky clean models for society when they are flawed individuals just like the rest of us. the microscope is unfair but now more than ever athletes are susceptible to all kinds of scrutiny thanks to social media |
