Dr. Jimmy DeYoung and Bible scholar David James recently discussed theodicy. Does God tolerate or create evil? "Untold millions have suffered and died in history, up to today." The United States is not a Christian nation by law. Israel is unique, as God's chosen people in ancient history, not because they were special, but because they werent. God did not and does not create evil. Evil was not part of creation, which was "very good." Evil angels (Satan, et al) and human beings are created as free moral agents who choose to create evil. Could an "all good and all powerful God" allow evil? Should God stop people from their sexual lust, for example? Or any form of pride or covetousness? No, because that would deny our free will, which is allowed by God, that we can choose sin or evil, over God or truth. The Spirit of God and his special revelation, the Bible, alone can reveal the deep things of God. http://prophecytoday.com/ (Oct. 7, 2017) http://www.biblicalintegrity.org/about-abi/statement-of-faith/ 1 Cor 2:14-16 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” [Isaiah] But we have the mind of Christ. The natural man is deceiving and being deceived, 2Tim 3:13; "You say, 'I am rich. I have everything I want. I don't need a thing!' And you don't realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked," Revelation 3:17. We are self-deceived hypocrits apart from God. THE NATURAL MAN Romans 1:19-21 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. The Spirit provides saints ability to discern truth Pslam 119:18 Spiritually dead people unable to comprehend John 5:37-39; 1John2:20-27 Not that saints are all-knowing Dt 29:29; saints still must have teachers Eph 4:11-12; understanding still requires work 2Ti2:15 Spiritually dead, non-believers in Christ still percieve morality through the imago Dei, and general revelation. Further, I think Hebrews 6:4-6 reveals the Spirit as empowering, even to those apostates who will be damned. Certainly evil spiritual power in manifest in the world system. Spiritual in a positive, Biblical sense is being united with Christ, and indwelt by the Spirit, thereby belonging to God in eternal Heaven. The inifnity of God's Spirit is the same as inifinite knowledge and wisdom. See Isaiah 40:13; Romans 11:34 Nature, man, and evil angels seem to cause evil. FOR THE CREATION WAITS WITH EAGER LONGING Romans 8:19-29 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because[g] the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[h] for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. THE FALL Genesis 3:17 cursed is the ground because of you. THE FLOOD Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened Earth's geography and climate changed before and during the Noahic covenant and global flood. HUMAN EVIL Are people inherently good? No, we all have a sin nature. Jeremiah 17:9 The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Romans 3:10-12 As the Scriptures say, "No one is righteous— not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one. HOPE IN THE LORD James 4:6-10 As the Scriptures say, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. Spritual power against devils is reserved to Jesus and his apostles. Eph 6 Put on the full armor of God... David James: "Life is short, Hell is hot and eternity is a long time." "Our lives are but a vapor. " "Pray for those hurting from spiritual emotional and physical needs." "Donate to reputible charities." https://www.gotquestions.org/theodicy.html "The Christian can respond to Epicurus as follows: Statement: Is God willing to prevent evil, but unable to? Then he is not omnipotent. Response: God is willing to limit evil and has acted to do just that. So, He is still omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. God is able, but not willing, to abolish our free will. So, He is still omnibenevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? God has acted to defeat evil. Evil comes simply when we fall short of His will. Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? God is not willing to prevent our free will. Your disapproval does not make Him any less God. And, to the more pop-culture-friendly Lex Luthor, Christianity can respond as follows: “If God is all powerful, he cannot be all good. And if he’s all good, then he cannot be all powerful.” God can be all-powerful and choose not to act according to your preferences. When you say “all good,” what you really mean is “doing things my way”; and when you say, “all powerful,” what you really mean is “capable of making us simultaneously free and robotic,” which is gibberish. An all-powerful, all-good God can allow evil in order to obtain the greater, eternal good. Human beings will always struggle with the problem of evil. Theodicy is not an attempt to make God appear as palatable as possible. In fact, the opposite is true. A truly rational theodicy has to begin with the admission that our dislike of something does not make it false. The question is not whether God is compatible with our personal preferences. The problem of evil is simply the debate over whether or not God is logically possible. Theodicy, taking all logic and evidence together, clearly says He is—whether we like Him or not." |
