John Martyn R.I.P.
Posted by briandade (Moderator) at Jan 29 2009, 10:25 PM. One comment
The singer-songwriter John Martyn has died aged 60.
Known for musical marriage of folk and jazz, Martyn was one of the most distinctive and prolific artists of his generation. His most successful album was 1973's Solid Air, the title song of which was said to be in tribute to singer-songwriter Nick Drake, with whom Martyn was often compared.
His career spanned four decades and he worked with numerous high-profile musicians, including Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Phil Collins. He also worked extensively with his former wife Beverley Martyn.
For much of his career, Martyn enjoyed a lifestyle of typical rock'n'roll excess and later struggled with alcoholism. He once told Q Magazine: "If I could control myself more, I think the music would be much less interesting. I'd probably be a great deal richer but I'd have had far less fun and I'd be making really dull music." In 2003 his right leg was partially amputated after a large cyst under his knee burst, leading him to spend his latter years in a wheelchair.
Martyn was awarded an OBE in the 2009 New Year honours list.
A statement posted on his website today reads: "With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning." The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Keith Richards to release easy listening album
Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones guitarist and wild man of rock 'n' roll, is set to release an easy-listening album.
By Ben Leach
The album is rumoured to include a jazz version of the Judy Garland classic Somewhere Over The Rainbow from The Wizard Of Oz and Perry Como's I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now.
The revelation emerged after more than 20 never-released covers by the Rolling Stones guitarist were leaked onto the internet.
Other songs on the list include an homage to country star Tammy Wynette in the song Apartment No 9 and Andy Williams's Let It Be Me.
Richards, 64, has also recorded Big Band composer Hoagy Carmichael's The Nearness Of You, Fats Domino's Blue Monday and Jerry Lee Lewis's She Still Comes Around.
The songs came to light on www.captainsdead. com, a website run by Stones fan Greg Van Dyke in New Orleans.
In an online chat with fans Richards was asked whether he would consider releasing the tracks.
He replied: "I've never planned it before but maybe now I should; I'll think about it."
Such sentimental tracks are a far cry from Richards's usual image. He famously declared "rehab is for quitters" and was once given six months to live.
In 2007 he claimed to have snorted the ashes of his father like a line of cocaine, and in 2006 he needed brain surgery after he fell out of a palm tree in Fiji.
Some of the recordings are unfinished and would need reworking. But Richards will have time to polish them as the Stones will not be recording a new studio album until next autumn, with a world tour pencilled in for 2010.

Mitch Nitchell Obituary

Mitch Mitchell, best known as Jimi Hendrix's drummer in The Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead in Portland, Oregon last night (November 12).
According to early reports, the drummer, who was still touring with the Experience Hendrix Tour, passed away in his hotel room. He was 61.
Born on July 9, 1947 in Ealing, west London, Mitchell began his showbiz career early, appearing on a children's TV show while still a teenager, before graduating to drums with a series of bands in the '60s.
Mitchell joined The Tornados in 1963, though it was rumoured that his individualistic approach to the drums caused him to clash with the band's pioneering producer Joe Meek, who wanted someone who would follow orders without adding an artistic interpretation.
He then played with groups including The Coronets, The Lively Set, The Riot Squad - and he even auditioned for The Who in 1964, but lost out to Keith Moon.
Having drummed for Georgie Fame in the mid-'60s, Mitchell was eventually recruited to drum for Hendrix in around 1966 after the US guitarist had been brought over to the UK by his manager, and former member of The Animals, Chas Chandler.
Joined by Noel Redding on bass, the trio recorded the albums 'Are You Experienced', 'Axis: Bold As Love' and 'Electric Ladyland' together, with critics noting Mitchell's ability to blend in jazz-inspired rhythms into rock 'n' roll.
During that period, while Redding and Hendrix were said to have had their differences – the bassist was actually a guitarist first and was frustrated at not playing his original instrument – Mitchell remained a constant presence, with the pair recording the acclaimed cover of Bob Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower' together in 1968, with Hendrix supplying the bass part.
In 1968 Mitchell also played drums in the Dirty Mac band which featured John Lennon, and famously played as part of The Rolling Stones' TV special 'Rock And Roll Circus'.
Although The Jimi Hendrix Experience split in 1969 and Mitchell was not involved in the guitarist's subsequent band Gypsy Sun And Rainbows, he returned to drum for Hendrix's headlining appearance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.
The pair then recruited bassist Billy Cox for a new incarnation of the Hendrix Experience in 1970, often known as the Cry Of Love band, who toured the US and Europe.
Following Hendrix's death on September 18, 1970, Mitchell worked on several posthumous recordings, before getting involved in a series of session work over the decades.
At the time of his death Mitchell was involved in the Experience Hendrix Tour, which saw the drummer and a series of guests performing the Experience's songs live.
Following US dates, he was due to return home to the UK on November 12, but was found dead in his hotel room having died of natural causes according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner.

Led Zeppelin to replace Robert Plant?
According to reports Jimmy Page and co. have been rehearsing with a new singer
Led Zeppelin have replaced their frontman Robert Plant with American singer Myles Kennedy, according to reports.
MuchMoreMusic claims that Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham have been rehearsing with Kennedy recently, after Plant issued a statement quashing rumours of a reunion tour and album.
On September 29 Robert Plant issued a statement saying Led Zeppelin would not record or tour with him in the line-up.
The claim came after Twisted Sister's Dee Snider supposedly leaked details of the rehearsal sessions.
Snider described Page, Jones and Bonham as saying to Robert Plant: "We're all rehearsed, we're ready to go. Here's a gazillion dollars on the table.
"If you don't do it, we're going out with this kid [Kennedy]. And he can sing the out of Zeppelin And they're gonna hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, 'OK', and step in."
Myles Kennedy is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Washington who currently fronts rock band Alter Bridge.

RICK WRIGHT---R.I.P
Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright has died aged 65 from cancer.
Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason.
Dave Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.
Gilmour said: "He was such a lovely, gentle, genuine man and will be missed terribly by so many who loved him."
Writing on his website, he added: "And that's a lot of people. Did he not get the loudest, longest round of applause at the end of every show in 2006?"
Wright's spokesman said in a statement: "The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer.
"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."
He did not say what form of cancer the self-taught keyboard player and pianist had.

Pink Floyd achieved legendary status with albums including 1973's The Dark Side Of The Moon, which stayed in the US album chart for more than a decade.
Wright, known as Rick earlier in his career, wrote The Great Gig In The Sky and Us And Them from the album.
Waters left the band in 1981, performing his last concert at London's Earls Court.
Wright, together with Gilmour and Mason, continued to record and tour as Pink Floyd during the remainder of the 1980s and into the 1990s, releasing their last studio album - The Division Bell - in 1994.
In 2005, the full band reunited - for the first time in 24 years - for the Live 8 concert in London's Hyde Park.
