Lesson 1

Please post name and house before each lesson! Let's get started.

Good afternoon class, I hope your all ready to take a fascinating journey through the history of magic. Our first course of study will be the magical world of Ancient Egypt. Those who have studied and practiced magic, magical techniques, protection charms, healing spells, curses, and of course one of my favorites the mummies. Let’s get started!

In Egyptian myths, magic or (heka) was one of the forces used to create the world. Egyptian priests were the main practitioners of magic during the time of the Pharoses.
They were seen as the guardians of the secrets of the Gods. The most respected users of magic were the Lector Priests, who were capable of reading the ancient books held within the temples and libraries. The Lector Priests performed rituals to protect their kings, and assist them with death and rebirth. As times changed healing magic became the specialty of priests who served the goddess Sekhmet- the fearsome goddess of plaque. There were other practitioners of magic including the Scorpion-Charmers whose magic rid an area of poisonous snakes and insects. Midwives and nurses used magic along with their other skills. Wise women where consulted about ghosts or deities that were causing problems. Amulets were also another source of powerful magic. The kings or priest disapproved none of these methods of magic. Only outsiders were regularly accused of performing harmful magic. Not much evidence is found until the Roman times that suggest that harmful magic was ever being used.

Due to the enormous amount of information found on this subject we will be learning Egyptian magic over a number of different lesson. Each lesson will have a new topic of discussion.
