Lesson 8 The Titans Welcome class to lesson 8 of Greek Mythology, today we will be studying some of the myths behind the Titans. The Titan’s also known as the “Elder Gods”, ruled the earth before the Olympians overthrew them. Cronus was the leader of the Titans. Cronus- the ruling Titan, whose wife was Rhea, parents of the first Olympians. Cronus had heard of a prophecy regarding one of his children rising up to overthrow him taking his place as ruler. To insure his safety, Cronus swallowed each one of his children. Rhea becoming very unhappy about the loss of her children tricked Cronus into swallowing a rock instead of Zeus. Zeus would eventually revolt against his father and the other Titans, defeat them, and banish them to Tartarus. Cronus managed to escape to Italy, where he ruled as Saturn. The period of his rule was said to be a golden age on earth, honored by many feasts in his name. Gaea-Goddess of Earth married her son Uranus to produce the remaining Titans. Uranus- the sky god and first ruler fathered 12 of the Titans with Gaea. Oceanus- was the unending stream of water encircling the world. Together he and his wife Tethys produced the rivers and 3000 ocean nymphs. Hyperion- the Titan of light was an early Sun God. He was the son of Gaea and Uranus. From his union with Theia, children Helius (the sun) and Selene (the moon were born). Mnemosyne-was known as the Titan of Memory and Mother of the Muses. Themis- the Titan of Justice and Order. She is the mother of Fates and Seasons. Iapetus- was the father of Prometheus, Epimetheus, Menoetius, and Atlas. Coeus- Titan of Intelligence. Father of Leto. Crius- Not able to obtain any information. Phoebe- Titan of the Moon. Mother of Leto. Thea- No information found as of yet. Metis- Titan of the 4th day and planet Mercury. Known for wisdom and knowledge. Gave birth to Athena. She was concerned over a prophecy that her second child would overthrow Zeus. Because of the prophecy Zeus ate her. It is said that she is the source of Zeus’s wisdom and advises him from his belly. Dione- Mother of Aphrodite. Prometheus- wisest of the Titans. His name means “Forethought”, he could foretell the future. Son of Iapetus. When Zeus revolted against Cronus he fought on the side of Zeus. He also is known as the Protector and Benefactor of man. He gave mankind many gifts including fire. He tricked Zeus into allowing man to have the best parts of the animal and give the Gods the left overs for sacrifices. Zeus punished him by chaining him to a rock, allowing an eagle to tear at his liver. He was left there for eternity until he disclosed which child of Zeus would try to replace him as ruler. Hercules eventually released him without giving the information to Zeus. Epimethius- the stupid one, his name means ‘After thought”. Also a son to Iapetus, he made the mistake of accepting the gift of Pandora from Zeus, which led to the introduction of evil into the world. Atlas- the son of Iapetus, fought against Zeus. Due to Cronus age, Atlas led the Titans in the battle against Zeus. Being singled out for punishment, he was made to hold up the world on his back. This wraps up today’s lesson and were will be moving on to the Olympians in Lesson 9. You may now proceed to your assignment. Cottonmouth Slytherin Excellent work Cottonmouth you have earned slytherin house 36pts plus an extra 5, because I like it when a student debates information found in a lesson. Yes you are correct on quesiton 5. My sources tell me that Ahprodite was either born by the myth which you have described, but she could have been also the offspring of Zeus and Dione. The website I have listed carries both versions of how she was created. Thanks I like a good debate. Yes as far as Zeus being like his father, according to what I have read, he indeed ate aleast the one child who was said to be able to overthrow him. But this would not make much sense since he ate her while she was pregnant so how was the child to be born? You will find these myths also on the websites I have listed. |
