Lesson 10
Poseidon

You opened the door to the History of Magic classroom and can’t believe your eyes for the Professor has changed the room to look like the inside of an Aquarium. Each topical fish tank is unique with many beautiful creatures and fish from different depths of the ocean and coral reefs. Sea horses, clown fish, small sharks, dolphins, and many others swim in and out of the walls as if they were invisible. In the background you hear the sound of the waves as they crash upon the shore.

Welcome everyone to lesson 10 the study of Poseidon. Once again I thought I give this room a touch of realism as we venture future into Greek Mythology.

Poseidon was known as the God of the Sea, protector of all waters. After the fall of the Titans, Poseidon was given the gift of the sea. He is worshipped especially in connection with navigation.

In Thessaly and other areas he was known as Hippios, (God of the Horses), and was the father of Pegasus.

Poseidon was extremely powerful and was violent and vengeful. He carried the Trident, which he used to split boulders and cause earthquakes. When Laomendon (King of Troy) failed to pay him for building the wall of Troy, Poseidon sent a sea monster to ravage the city and years later vengefully assisted the Greeks in the Trojan War. He was the husband of Amphitrite who gave him a son named Triton. Having many affairs he fathered many more sons, who usually turned out to be strong brutal men (like Orion), or monsters like (Polyphemus). The Romans identified him as Neptune.

His kingdom is the vast sea, which he populates with creatures of his own design. He rides the waves in a chariot drawn by dolphins.

The Role of Poseidon in “The Odyssey”.

This is the story of why Poseidon hated Odysseus so much.
Odysseus blinded Poseidon’s son Polyphemos and he and his family paid dearly for his mistake. Polyphemos was a Cyclops, one of the large eyed giants. He was the son of Poseidon and Thoosa the sea nymph. Odysseus came to Polyphemos’s cave and discovered he was a man-eater. Thinking he had Odysseus and his men trapped he let his guard down. Odysseus gave him strong wine and kept him busy with clever talk. Once drunk Odysseus sprang upon him and blinded him with a burning spear. Odysseus made his escape but not before he taunted Polyphemos with cruel insults. Poseidon would not forgive Odysseus for the indignity placed upon his son. Poseidon caused Odysseus and his family constant misery, while he forced him farther and farther away from his home.
