Lesson 11 Hermes Posted Image Hello class, today we will once again venture further into Greek Mythology by learning a few of the stories of Hermes. Hermes was the son of Zeus and Maia (daughter of Atlas). He had many functions, but was primarily the messenger of the Gods (especially Zeus), and brought the souls of the deceased to Hades. He was known as the God of travelers and roads, luck, music and eloquence, merchants and commerce, of young men, cheats and thieves. He was accredited for the creation of the lyre and the Shepard’s flute. He made the lyre from a tortoise shell, and putting nine holes on each side. He then strung linen from side to side. The lyre had nine holes, which represented the nine Muses. Hermes gave Apollo the lyre, and Apollo then gave him the Caduceus (the winged topped staff with two snakes winding around it). The Roman’s identify Hermes with Mercury. The statue “Flying Mercury” by Giovanni Bologna represents Hermes as a graceful youth, wearing a wide brimmed winged hat, winged sandals, and carrying the Caduceus. We will now discuss some of the myths of Hermes. The Slayer of Argos Hermes was often called Argeiphontes “The Slayer of Argos”. Hermes killed the herdsman Argos but it was not an easy task. Argos was called “Argos Panoptes”, meaning “All Seeing”. Argos had eyes all over his body so that he could guard his flock better. As we know Zeus had many affairs and one of them was with a maiden named IO. In order for Zeus to hide his affair from Hera, he turned IO into a black and white heifer. Hera saw through this disguise and assigned Argos to guard IO. Zeus become enraged that he could not see IO and sent Hermes to kill Argos. This did not release IO from the curse brought upon her by Hera. Hera sent flies to bite and pester IO, forcing her to travel to distant lands out of Zeus’s reach. She would not find peace until she reached Egypt. Troy Another tale of Hermes comes around the end of the Trojan War. Priam went to retrieve the fallen body of his son Hector. Hermes disguised as a young, scruffy young man approached Priam on the road. Priam being a king and strong leader to his people eventually recognized Hermes. Hermes guided Priam through the battle lines and past the Achaian guards without being seen. As Dawn approached Hermes led Priam with Hectors body safely back to Troy, where he would receive a proper burial.
