Lesson 12 part 2

Medusa and Perseus

Welcome once again class; today we will be finishing the story of Medusa and Perseus. I will continue the tale wear we left off in part 1 of this lesson.

Perseus finds the three Gorgon’s asleep in their home among the rocks at the end of the world. Perseus eyes Medusa in the reflection from his shield, with the guiding hand of Athena, he used his diamond edged sword to cut off her head. Taking her head, he stuffed it in the sack. From the pool of blood left sprang forth a beautiful winged horse named Pegasus. Pegasus spread his magnificent wings and set off for Mt. Olympus to take his rightful place among the Muses. Having accomplished his task, Perseus took flight once again. Medusa’s sister’s awake to find her headless body, and took off after Perseus. They were not able to catch him.

In his travels Perseus came upon a beautiful women chained to a rock cliff over the sea. Her name was Andromeda, and that her mother Queen Cassiopeia, had bragged too much about her beauty and wrongfully compared her to the Goddess Nereid’s daughters. Because of this Poseidon flooded the cities and sent a sea monster to devour the people. The only way to appease the angry God was to offer Andromeda as a sacrifice to the sea monster. Her father King Cepheus, ordered her chained to the rock cliff. Perseus went to the King and told him that he would save her and kill the sea monster if he could make Andromeda his bride. The King and Queen agreed. After a fierce battle Perseus was victorious, he cut the chains and Andromeda was freed.

At the wedding feast the gates opened and Phineus who was engaged to Andromeda, but was to cowardly to save her appeared with a group of men. Her father had arranged this intrusion and persisted on Andromeda not marrying Perseus. A bloody battle raged on, Perseus shouted to his supporters, raised Medusa’s head and turned all those against him into stone.

Perseus returned to the Island of Seriphos, with his new bride. Perseus found Dictys’s cottage destroyed and found that Dictys and his wife were imprisoned. Danae was hiding in the temple, were she hide from Polydectes for he was still insisting that she marry him.
Perseus went to the Kings court and told King Polydectes that he had returned from his quest victorious. The King did not believe him, so Perseus took out Medusa’s head and turned everyone in the court into stone. He then freed Dictys, his wife and mother. Perseus and Andromeda were made King and Queen of Seriphos.

Many years later, Perseus, Danae, and Andromeda traveled to Argos, where Acrisius was still King. On the way to Argos, they stopped for Perseus to compete in the games at Larissa. Perseus would take the prize he won to his grandfather in a gesture of forgiveness. Acrisius panicked when he found out that his daughter and grandson were on their way to visit him and hide in the crowd at the games. Acrisius went to the games at Larissa hoping that if Perseus would not find him at the court of Argos he would just leave. Perseus was competing in the discus throw, when the wind caught the disk, and carried it into the crowd, thus striking an old man in the foot. Perseus ran to the old man and picked him up in his arms, but he was already dying from the shock of the blow. With his last dying breath Acrisius said one word “Danae”. Perseus realized that the man he held was Acrisius and that he died grieving over the daughter he treated so cruelly.

Perseus assumed the role of King of Argos, where he and Andromeda ruled for many years.
