Posted Image Lesson 13 Introduction to the Battle for Troy Hello everyone! Today’s lesson will cover a brief introduction to the Battle of Troy. This lesson will be the beginning of a new section of lesson’s where we will study the myths behind the legendary battle. Shall we begin! First was there really a Battle for Troy or is it just a myth? Until the 19th Century it was believed that Troy and the Trojan War were imaginary. In 1871, a German American citizen Henrich Schiemann started excavation of the ancient city of Troy in Turkey. To the amazement of many he had discovered the lost city of Troy (also called Ilion, or Ilium in Latin). Nine cities were found, one on top of the other. The seventh city was destroyed around 1180 B.C., and appears to be the legendary city. Today people can still see the ruins of its towers and walls, which are 16 feet thick. Schliemann identified Troy’s location through clues he found in the Iliad, which is the epic attributed to the Greek Poet Homer. It was believed in ancient times that Homer lived during the Trojan War. Not a lot is known about Homer. He was blind, and his poems were not written down. Modern Scholars seem to believe he lived during the 8th or 9th Century B.C. What started the Trojan War? It has been suggested that the Greeks may have been fighting to gain control of the Dardanelle (a water passage between the Mediterranean and Black sea, near Troy), or perhaps like the myth fought over a women named Helen. Essay Worth 20 Pts. Give me two paragraphs describing who was Helen of Troy? (Either a biography or her role in the Trojan War) This may be hard to put in two paragraphs so you can extend past the requirements if you need to. |
