Lesson 13 Part 2
Myths associated with the Battle for Troy

Welcome class. Today we will begin our studies of the Myth associated with the battle for Troy.

And so it begins:

According to legend, there was a chain of events that led to the Trojan War. The one will discuss started at a royal wedding.

Peleus, King of the Myronidon, was to marry a sea nymph named Thetis. Many Gods and Goddesses attended, but Eris (daughter of Zeus) was not invited for she is the Goddess of discord and bound to cause trouble. Angry at be excluded from the festivities, Eris decided to disrupted the wedding feast by throwing a “Golden Apple” marked for the fairest among the guest. The Goddess Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite were all in attendance and felt that they were the fairest of all. They argued for a while and decided to have Zeus choose.

Zeus not wanting to have any part of this, chose a prince named Paris (son of king Priam of Troy) to make the decision. Paris was of royal heritage but was raised as a Shepard after his mother learned in a vision that he would cause the destruction of Troy.

There could be many reasons way Zeus choose Paris to judge this beauty contest. Paris was said to be the most honest person on earth, or he was just to stupid, to know not to get involved with arguing Goddesses. Zeus was probably just being sarcastic because he knew that Paris was an expert at judging cattle. It also could have been fate, because Paris was intended to be the one to cause the destruction of Troy.

The Goddesses tried to bribe Paris. Athena promised to lead him to victory in battle against the Greeks.
Hera promised to make him King of all Europe and Asia. Aphrodite promised Paris a marriage to the most beautiful women in the world. Paris awarded Aphrodite the “Golden Apple”. She sent Paris to Sparta to collect his future wife. Unfortunately for him she was already married.

That’s enough for today. In our next lesson we will complete our study of Greek Mythology and the Trojan War.
