Today you will be studying one of the most feared Magical Creatures around. This creature is not only feared by Witches and Wizard's, but also among other creatures... Now onto the lesson.

M.O.M: XXXXX

"Of the many fearsome beasts and monsters that roam our land, there is none more curious or more deadly than the Basilisk, known also as the King of Serpents. This snake, which may reach gigantic size and live many hundreds of years, is born from a chicken's egg, hatched beneath a toad. Its methods of killing are most wondrous, for aside from its deadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death. Spiders flee before the Basilisk, for it is their mortal enemy, and the Basilisk flees only from the crowing of the rooster, which is fatal to it."

A wizard-bred Dark creature of enormous power, this extremely poisonous giant serpent (up to 50 feet in length) is brilliant green in color with long thin saber-like fangs and bulbous yellow eyes. A basilisk can live for at least 900 years given an adequate food supply, and as it can eat most vertebrates (including humans), this is not difficult to achieve. The male can be distinguished from the female by the scarlet plume on its head, but basilisks are usually magically rather than normally bred. The basilisk has a very keen sense of smell.

Basilisk-breeding has been outlawed since medieval times and in the present day falls under the Ban on Experimental Breeding, but this law has rarely been broken even by Dark wizards, since only a Parselmouth can control a basilisk.

The phoenix seems immune to the basilisk's deadly gaze. Apart from its specific magical powers and long lifespan, many of the characteristics of the basilisk follow naturally from its being a serpent (see). Like more mundane serpents, the basilisk sheds its skin at intervals, and its varied diet is typical of the larger snakes, which tend to pursue larger and larger prey according to their own size and capabilities.

The name basilisk comes from the Greek word 'basileus', which means 'King'. This is partially why the basilisk is called the 'king of snakes', or 'the king of serpents'. The Basilisk is almost always an icon of fear.

The most characteristic feature of the basilisk is its ability to kill at a distance, either with venom or a glance. Its glance would kill instantly, except if you see only the reflection of the basilisks stare. If you only see the reflection, you will be petrified, but will not die. The crowing of a Rooster can kill a basilisk.

1) The Basilisk is a giant serpent which can reach up to 50 feet in length. It's color is a brilliant green. It has long sabre-like, venomous fangs, and large yellow bulbous eyes. The male of the species bears a large scarlet plume on the head.

2) The name Basilisk is derived from the Greek Basileus, meaning a King.

3) Although the Basilisk is extremely poisonous and a bite from it's fangs would certainly be fatal, the far greater danger lies within its eyes. Looking into the eyes of a Basilisk will bring certain death, its reflection alone is enough to cause petrification.

4) The crowing of a rooster is said to be fatal to the Basilisk, though I don't think I would like to face one armed only with a rooster.

5) The Basilisk is a hybrid creature bred by wizards, born from a chicken egg that is hatched under a toad.

6) The Basilisk can be controlled only by a Parcelmouth, a wizard who can speak Parceltongue, the language of the snakes.

A basilisk is a giant, green snake which can reach 50 feet in length. It hasyellow eyes and long, thin fangs which are venomous. It can live hundreds of years(at least 900) if properly fed, which isn’t difficult to achieve, because it eats mostly vertebrates (also humans). A basilisk is usually bread magically by wizards. A basilisk is a dark creature and its extremely dangerous.

2.) What word does it's name come from?
The basilisk comes from a Greek word basileus and this means 'King'. That's probably why people call basilisk a King of Snakes (King of Serpents).

3.) How can a Basilisk kill it's victims?
There are two ways that a Basilisk can kill it’s victims. First one is by using its venomous fangs, they are lethal. The second way, which is far more interesting, is that a Basilisk can kill by its stare. The death is instant.

4.) What animal's voice can kill a Basilisk?
A voice of a rooster can kill a Basilisk.

5.) How did the Basilisk come into existance?
A Basilisk was born from chicken’s egg that was hatched beneath a toad.
