Lesson 16
Circe
Famous Witches and Wizards

Welcome class! Once again we will be studying famous Witches and Wizards found on the chocolate frog packages. Today’s famous witch is known as
Circe or as it is pronounced (Kirke) the “Dread Goddess”. She was the daughter of Helios (the sun) and Perseis. She is the grand daughter of Okeanos
(The ocean).

On her private island of Aeaea is where you will find her magnificent palace. She waits for lost sailors to arrive on her shores and find the steps to her palace. She invites them in, gives them a potion which drugs them and proceeded to eat them.

One such story involves Odysseus who we have studied in other prior lessons. Odysseus and his crew arrived on shore of the island Aeaea. He sent 23 men to explore the island and bring back previsions. While his men were exploring the beach they heard singing, following the song the came to the door of Circe’s palace. She invited them in giving them the each the potion, once the potion took effect the men turned into pigs and were put in a pen.

Euryllochos was the only survivor who went running back to Odysseus and pleaded with him to sail away for Circe and the island were evil. Odysseus was not afraid and would not sail away without trying to retrieve his men; he set off for her palace. On the way he met Hermes who was disguised as a young man. Hermes told him the he could save his men and trap Circe if he listened to what the Gods told him. Hermes pulled up a plant call Moly from the ground. Odysseus took the good medicine plant and went to Circe’s palace. She welcomed him in, gave him the potion, but because of the plant he was protected. When she thought the potion had taken effect, she tapped him with her wand. The wand was supposed to complete the transformation, but Odysseus drew his sword and sprang upon her, which she immediately surrendered. She gave his men another potion transforming them into much taller and more handsome men then before.

To show her good faith she opened her home once again to the sailors. After everyone was rested Circe told Odysseus that his journey would take him to the House of Hades (ruler of the underworld). He must consult the Soul of the Seer “Theiresias The Thaban” to find out how he could appease Poseidon and be able to finally return home. Circe said goodbye to him and told him how to sail safely past the island of the Sirens, (the six headed Skylla and the monster Charybdis)

Circe and Odysseus had two children Agrios and Latimos.
