Yup, It all comes down to the markerlights. |

I like the sound of that! And no you don't need Pathfinders, the Skyray has two markerlights built right in. |

This may be true, but the addition of pathfinders gives you easier LoS to a target and you can move the pathfinders to a different spot than the sky ray, opening up even more targets! |

The Skyray makes a wonderful little tool. The first thing most people assume the Skyray is good for is in the Artillery Skyray role (The ArtRay). Idealy equipped with Gundrones so it never has to get even remotely close to the enemy, the Artray excelles at supporting forward-situated Pathfinder teams despite dense terrain, while keeping itself stationary (and landed) to provide anti-aircraft support and to make the most of terrain masking. Most people, however, end up using their Skyrays in the Intermediate Fire Support (IFSRay) role, simply due to the average tablesize. Armed with Smart Missiles and opperating in support of the gunline, the IFSRay provides anti-MEQ and tank punch for Fire Warrior squads. Rarer is the Direct Close Support (DCSRay) configuration. Opperating as the spearhead of a MechTau assault, the DCSRay makes use of its tank-equivilent armour to provide leading-edge mobile markerlight support to Mechanized formations. DCSRays, being on the forefront of the fight, are typically armed with Burst Cannons for the greater volume of fire and multiple-target engagement ability. The often-made comment that you need Pathfinders to utilize a Skyray is incorrect; however frequently it is said. Without a Targeting Array a Skyray will only hit 50% of the time with its markerlights, meaning with average rolls, assuming targets present themselves every turn, a Ray will only hit 6 times with its Markerlights per game. Including a Targeting Array increases those odds; however the enemy won't always be polite enough to let you shoot him every turn. In my personal experiance, the only time that Rays run out of ammunition is during extended anti-vehicle engagements (Rolling Thunder event here in Canada during the summer) |
