I don't class anything under six minutes as average.... Seriously, I don't think I have ant CDs other than some early Radiohead stuff that averages under that! |

While usually I'd act all snobbish, I would like to point out that Dark Side of the Moon is in the top ten best-selling albums EVER, Atom Heart Mother, containing a 20 minute, 6 part orchestral suite, was UK No. 1 for about 2 weeks on first release and also, although god only knows how, Yes' Tales From Topographic Oceans was 1973's best selling album, containing the following songs: "The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn)" – 20:25 "The Remembering (High the Memory)" – (Lyrics by Yes) 20:38 "'The Ancient' (Giants Under the Sun)" – (Lyrics by Anderson/Howe/Squire) 18:35 "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)" – 21:37 Fair does, it isn't mainstream now, but it sort of used to be. |

20 minutes? That's bloody long for a song. I consider 6 minutes punishing it. |

Emerson Lake and Palmer: Karn Evil 9 Total Running Time = 29:37 (about half an hour) First Impression, part 1 (0:00 to 8:41) First Impression, part 2 (8:42 to 13:22) Second Impression (13:23 to 20:30) Third Impression (20:31 to 29:37) Alternatively, a live version clocking in at justover 35 mins exists. You may well know the second half of First Impression as "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends".... Here's the wonderful piano/steel drum section on Youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEPX075awIw That's about half the speed Emerson plays at.... |

Empire of the Sun are a good band (duo?). Not quite my stuff but I still got a compilation thing they did recently (it cost me a quid...). Never heard of VNV... What kind of music? Today I Got; Miles Davis: Columbia Jazz (65-68) Essential Progressive Rock (which is actually about sixty percent prog, but still good fun, esp. the stuff from Man and Utopia) Hawkwind: 1999 Party (Except it was recorded in 1974....) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_1999_Party) Best of Kevin Ayers (singer from Soft Machine; man, did he like getting stoned...) Radiohead: Com Lag (Japanese rarities and remixes compilation) Atomic Rooster: Giants of Rock (piss cheap compilation of progressive hard rock band who made Zepplin riffs sound weak) I normally dislike compilations but they were all so cheap and (in a bizzarre twist given their genre) relatively easy to listen to in chunks... |

I got Van Der Graff Generator's DVD Live Album: Godbluff Live. The album songs themselves aren't quite as good as the studio equivalents, but they still kick ass. It's the extra 20 minute epic Plague of Lighthouse Keepers that really blows minds; free jazz freakouts, ambient synthesizer and a bizzare narrative involving the titular, suicidal character makes for excellent listening, especially as sung by Peter Hamill, easily the best and loudest singer in prog-rock. It's like a 3-guitar strong metal band playing Bartok style classical music, except none of them play guitar.... If you dare face this monster, this is the full song as I watched it earlier. http://www.trilulilu.ro/mihaireal/bab3ec65f6c725?video_google_com= Also got a cheapo DVD Anthology Of Classic Rock. Hit and miss, really, but mostly hits. Here's the tracks and the sad, biased ratings I've snobbily given them... (out of five).... Tracklisting: Wishbone Ash - "Blowin' Free" ** (OK if you like Rolling Stones kind of stuff, I guess..) Argent - "Hold Your Head Up"*** (Hammond led anthem thing...) The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - "Delilah"***** (This is the Tom Jones song done by a Scottish nutter and an insane dancing clown....) Uriah Heep - "Return to Fantasy"*** (Synths are nice here, but not their best...) Asia - "Heat of the Moment"*** (I want to give it **, but it's King Crimson's John Wetton, ELP's Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes of Yes, so they get ***...) Focus - "Sylvia"***** (It's dutch flute-metal stuff, and I met them once, so of course I'm biased...) Emerson, Lake and Palmer - "The Barbarian"***** (Best piece. Keith Emerson attacks Bela Bartok's piece in a frezied, synthesized sonic assault...) Family - "Strange Band"*** (Well, it's just odd, really. Violin sounds cool, though...) Curved Air - "Melinda More or Less"**** (I like Curved Air, and this lovely acoustic song from Sonja Christina is pleasent enough to get ****...) Slade - "Get Down Get With it"* (GOOD GOD, NO MORE OF THESE FUCKERS!!!!) Deep Purple - "Child in Time"***** (Worth it just for Richie Blackmoore's guitar solo, although the organist easily matches him...) Free - "I'll be Moving"** (It's progressive funk music, people! And yes, it does sound silly, occasionally...) Thin Lizzy - "The Sun Goes Down"*** (Phil Lynott and Snowy White are good but not the best here. Still good fun, though...) Barclay James Harvest - "Mockingbird" **** (Although original studio would easily get 5, this is still a nice, relaxed ending...) EDIT: VdGG DVD would easily score a ***** with any song on the disc.... Edited by King Crimson, Aug 12 2009, 09:38 PM.
