2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (U)
Stanley Kubrick Season

Released in 1968 it is a finely crafted masterpiece of the cinema, a landmark of the science fiction genre packed full of existential mystery, spectacular imagery and special effects used deliberately slowly to echo the vastness of space. Kubrick memorably uses classical music and innovative soundscapes to dramatic effect, elevating the gravity of each scene to inspire awe.

I'm reading 2010, Odyssey 2 and I must say, it is kick ass. Actually, no, that implies something is happening in the novel except scientifically realistic space travel, but to be fair, they are about to reconnect HAL, so it should be good. Beside, its a nice, dare I say easy read, with Chapters about 4 pages long. That said, not many Mills and Boon novels have alien monoliths and psychedlic pompousity in amounts to make Syd Barrett curl into a ball, let alone lengthy discussions on the transient nature of time....

Film is good (have DVD :D ) but kind of hard going in bits (I swear the version I have is nearer 3 hours than this...). Think of the film equivalent of prog rock or something and your somewhere there; pompous, drawn out, effect driven but intellectually abstract....

Talking of which, if, like Robin, you enjoy tripping out, try doing so to this link up of 2001 and Pink Floyd. Synchs pretty well, and considering Roger Waters used soundbytes of HAL on his solo stuff it wouldn't suprise me should it be intentional....

FREAKOUT TIME....
