What about getting undershirts that have support in them. Its less bra like. Thats what I did when I was a teen. I totally wouldn't wear a bra, its so uncomfortable.

I know we don't rememeber the days before we wore bras.

I was one of those who refused! heck- cause my mom pushed me so hard I refused till I myself got embarressed at 16! Yep, you read it correctly... 16! In the girl's locker room at school someone made a comment about getting a new bra and asked what brand I wore. I said I didn't. She told everyone and they made fun of me for weeks! I got one that night!! I went straight into a C cup. LOL. OY! What was I thinking.

Will she wear a sports bra? They're not so bra-like. They sell them at Old Navy. That's what dd is wearing now.
My problem now is that I really want to take her to be fitted properly and she's uncomfortable with the idea.

I second the sports bra or the undershirts with the support built in. I'm surprised she doesn't want to wear one! Are her friends wearing them yet? I remember BEGGING my mom to buy me a "training bra" because I wanted to be like all the other girls (who incidentally had nothing to wear them for anyway) it was so ridiculous. Of course, little did I know I would grow to HATE those things. I can't wait until bedtime to take mine off - such a relief! I don't care if I have socks with rocks in them because I don't support them all night - I just can't take the constraint!

I despise them! But I'm very well endowed, so there's no choice.

Sports bras are a good plan, and take her alone and have her pick them out herself... OR send her with her older sister. When my sis was about that age, she wouldn't let anyone but me go bra shopping with her. Going with my mom was too embarassing for her. In fact, we still do it (she's 16 now). Depends on their relationship, but since she just went through the same thing, she may be the right person to get for the job.

I also hated it. My mother gave me the undershirt or bra option. I chose the undershirt. When I did "go for it", the sports bra was less intimidating. I think you got some pretty good advice so far.

Please keep us updated. Although, being that my children are both boys and the oldest is 2, I'm not in the parsha.

Peer pressure did it for us! I had a few sports bras for her, but she was still going the undershirt route for the most part. Then she went to sleep-away camp for a month. She came back using the sports bras - in the little sizes they are really very much like a cut off undershirt with some elastic at the bottom!

My daughter objected too. She was in 6th grade. I waited until school was out (so her friends wouldn't know <_< ). They fitted her and gave her a sports bra that was so comfortable, she was wondering why she pushed it off. When school resumed, she wore an undershirt or T-shirt on top of her bra, under her uniform shirt. (Go figure)

omg. I had the opposite problem. It was much worse. I remember wanting ( and needing) a bra, but our european mother got it into her head that if you wear it too early, it will mess up your milk ducts or something. And so she had this whole complicated set of measurements that she had to do and formulas to figure out whether we could wear a bra or not. IT WAS TRAUMATIC. Be happy that you are a normal parent.

i know this thread was really old but i thought i'd add my 2cnts worth...i remember being in grade 6 and NOT wanting to wear a bra so my mom got a hand-me-down from my cousin and FORCED me to wear it as i was quite mature for my age (already had my period by that time) The other girls used to even make fun of me for wearing a bra so early...they were so mean :tantrum
i think if they had those tank bras back then i would have been way happier!!!
